MALINDO AIR’s Inaugural Flight To Melbourne Malindo Air flight OD177 mark the first flight from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne via Bali. The inaugural flight received a warm welcome by Melbourne Airport with a water canon salute, followed by a cake cutting session in the terminal. CEO of Malindo Air, Chandran Rama Muthy said that he was thrilled to add Melbourne to the route map, as the third city to fly to in Australia. Bali is seen to be one of the regular destinations for travellers from Melbourne and will be an add on benefit for passengers from Kuala Lumpur. Malindo have extended the connection to Kuala Lumpur from Bali to provide more flight options from the hub in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Meanwhile, it also supports the continuous effort in making KLIA a transit hub in the region. Chandran also added that Melbourne is no stranger to most Malaysians as the city features Malaysian–born communities, as well as a destination for education, business and leisure. Therefore, the route will attract VFR (visiting family and relatives), the business community and the tourism industry. The flights to Melbourne have received positive feedback since the launch of ticket sales in April, and will continue to explore and strengthen the connection to Australia. Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation, Simon Gandy, said he was delighted to welcome Malindo Air and to see increased capacity on the ever popular Melbourne-Bali route. Simon also added that they are extremely excited by this prospect, considering passenger traffic between Victoria and Indonesia has been growing at 8.6 per cent, per annum, in the past five years. highlights are rapidly filling current capacity, the strong travel demand in the routes and reinforces Victoria’s fascination with the leisure hotspot. According to Malaysia Airports Managing Director, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, he said that connectivity is a major factor in establishing an airport’s position as a global aviation hub. Last year, nearly 3 million inbound and outbound passengers

travelled on Australia-Kuala Lumpur route. It was an 8.2% increase from 2016. This itself is a testament that Malaysia is fast becoming one of the world’s preferred hubs. AUSTRALIA Down Under has no shortage of awe-inspiring marine wildlife and remarkable ways to interact with them. Recently added to that list are several new swim-withcreatures experiences. These guided encounters spanning from Australia’s west coast to the serene waters of South Australia, allow you to swim with humpback whales and an array of sharks. The Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia is an existing hot spot for swimming with the whale sharks, and operators have now extended their seasons to accommodate for the humpback migration (July to October annually). The tours will be full day tours and kept very small (maximum of ten people) and your interactions with the whales will be on the whale’s terms, keeping the experience safe. If the humpbacks behaviour and the weather allows, you will be able to get in the water with them. You can dive - without the cage

The marine scientists who run Ocean Park have started offering shark dives and even PADI dive certificate training with tiger sharks, sandbar sharks (one of the biggest coastal sharks in the world) hammerheads, lemon sharks and more in their shark lagoon. If you want to see these sharks in the wild then Shark Bay Dive & Marine Safaris

run scuba diving, snorkeling and scenic tours to Steep Point and Dirk Hartog Island. Shark Bay is at the overlap point of the temperate and tropical marine zones, giving it an intensely diverse nature cape beneath the waterline. NEPAL K2, also known as Mount GodwinAusten or Chhogori, at 8,611 metres above sea level, is the second highest mountain in the world, but known to be the most dangerous and difficult mountain to conquer. The colossal Himalayan mountain range in Asia is home to some of the world’s highest peaks, including the highest, Mt. Everest at 8,848 metres. Himalaya means “home of snow” because the tallest peaks are always capped with snow. Wildlife is diverse here, ranging from tigers, leopards and the one-horned rhinoceros found in the lower ranges, to the snow leopard and red panda at higher altitudes. Your K2 Adventure Travel journey begins in the colorful city of Kathmandu, the historical and cultural heart of Nepal, with its wonderful mix of Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism and Western influences. From here, you fly to Lukla and trek to Monjo, experiencing unique mountain scenery, forests, glaciers, monasteries—even a few suspension bridges. To a mountaineer, K2 can be regarded as the ‘mountain of mountains’. Its allure arises from the combination of its isolation,

extremes of weather, great altitude and technical climbing demands; K2 is a very serious and compelling objective. The challenging route takes people onto the well documented Abruzzi Spur or the Cesen Route. Even though these routes have become the most common, they are by no means completely straightforward. There are steep snow slopes and

difficult rock steps over fairly open and exposed ground, including the infamous ‘Shoulder’ at around 8000m. The mountain is believed by many to be the world’s most difficult and dangerous climb, hence its nickname “the Savage Mountain.” S o u rce a n d Pi c t u re s by ht t p s : / / w w w. a d v e n t u re p e a k s . co m / s h o p / k 2 - s u mmi t /

THAILAND Thailand has many spots for cliff diving or even cliff jump. By its simplest definition, cliff diving is exactly what it sounds like. It is an activity that involves people diving into the water from a very high and steep cliff. Cliff diving is an exciting sport that has been enjoyed for centuries by both professionals and amateurs. This is a sport that should be done by people who have plenty of experience that allows them to soar from extreme heights but still safely land in the water below. Cliff diving is probably the least complicated extreme sport. There is no equipment to buy, no special clothing to wear and no provider services to hire. It is just your body, sailing through the air from dizzying heights and plunging into a body of water below. The difference between cliff diving and cliff jump is the height. Cliff jump is not more than 10m and it is for first timers who wants to just jump from a cliff but cliff diving is more for professional athletes who train for this kind of adventure sports. Phi Phi Island boasts such natural beauty including bays, beaches, palm trees, and cliffs overlooking the ocean. These cliffs provide the setting for cliff jumping on Phi Phi

Island which can be done by both the natives and the tourists. The tour guide will take you to jumping venues ranging between 8-18 metres. They will also provide shoes and gloves to help climb the rocks and tell you the best way to jump and where to keep your hands and feet. Just wear some comfortable shorts or swimwear for the jump and take the plunge. INDONESIA Indonesia is a country known for many things such as its pristine beaches and delicious food. What many people do not realise is that Indonesia actually has more volcanoes than anywhere else in the world! Home to the “Ring of Fire”, an area in the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur, there are thought to be 150 volcanoes in Indonesia alone. Some volcanoes in Indonesia are active while others are not, the latter being perfect for hiking or trekking. You must have heard of Mount Agung, particularly due to its recent eruption that caused some travel delays and complications on the popular tourist island of Bali. Mount Agung is the tallest point on Bali and is considered the most sacred mountain on the island. It is also a very popular hiking trail in Bali for more experienced hikers and can be scaled in about six or seven hours with the help of a guide. A highlight of this volcano is the stunning Besakih Temple, or the Mother Temple, Bali’s largest temple on the volcano’s southern slopes. Another famous mountain to hike is Mount Batur which is probably one of Indonesia’s most popular volcanoes

due to its difficult but rewarding hike. Most people chose to do the twoto-three-hour hike of Mount Batur at dawn so they can see the incredible sunrise from the top. It is one of the most popular activities on the island of Bali for those looking for a bit of adventure. TAIWAN River Tracing, widely known as Canyoning in most countries, is an increasingly popular outdoor activity in Taiwan that involves walking, wading, climbing and trekking through rivers. The term River Tracing comes from the Japanese word “Kanazawa Teng,” meaning “to climb along the valley.” One of the most popular places in the world to go river tracing is Hualien, Taiwan. In the summer Taiwan is hot and sticky, but the rivers are beautiful, fresh and clean. On the outskirts of the famous Taroko Gorge, Hualien boasts some of the best river tracing in the world. On guided excursions, instructors will lead you upstream through beautiful natural environments to waterfalls and rocks where you can wade in the river, jump off rocks, and learn about the surrounding areas. River Tracing is a fun, safe, and exhilarating activity that can be done by all people of any age and skill. No level of physical ability or technical skill is required. The activity combines both leisure and sport as it allows people to explore unique areas of Hualien and soak in Taiwan’s most beautiful attraction, its natural environment. SINGAPOREAN RAPPER

Singaporean breakthrough artiste Yung Raja has created waves of success for himself as a rapper, songwriter, and actor. Since his emergence as a rapper, Raja has been dubbed as hip hop’s next avant-garde bilingual artiste with his tasteful unification of English and Tamil lyrics. Raja found viral success trending in Malaysia and Singapore following the release of his English-Tamil remixes of “Gucci Gang” (Poori Gang), “New Freezer” (More Better), and “Bartier Cardi” (Pathuko Thambi). Known for his formidable command of English-Tamil rap, Raja continues to confront the industry with his seamless bilingual delivery and distinct cultural references. The multi-talented artiste recently signed with M03 Records, a division of Kartel Records, has been in the media industry for over a decade with success across the local media landscape spanning films, television, and advertisements. Within a year of his foray into hip hop, the 23-year-old was invited to host Yo! MTV Raps alongside South Korea’s Jessi, featured as MTV Asia’s Spotlight artiste in the month of June, and has been invited to take the Shine Festival and Baybeats stages later this year. Raja’s debut single Mustafa is slated to come out in mid of 2018. To date, his video has garnered over 70,000 views on YouTube, and his popularity is steadily rising. “Hip-hop has always been a lifestyle for me growing up, but I never felt confident to pursue it as a career. I always felt like I have to be better. Then I started hyping at a few hip-hop clubs here, that is when I got really deep into music and the whole thought process to becoming a full-time artiste,” said Raja. “There are always certain stamps put on you based on what people think. I want to change it all by my work,” added the rapper. He feels that social media is good platform to get your talent out there. If you put up something entertaining and remarkable, the equation works - you get some recognition and you can make a career. When used the right way, it is a major key for growth.

Head to Sabah in the Eastern part of Malaysia for a journey of a lifetime and discover nature’s beauty in its crisp, pristine view. Mount Kinabalu Standing at a majestic height of 4200 feet above sea level, a trek through the thickets of vegetation leading to the summit of Mount Kinabalu is a sense of rejuvenation to any city-strained soul. Although it took the whole of three days to climb up and down, it was three days of digital detox in a land full of greenery and majestic views. The smell of the wet soil and the chirping of birds among the dense forest is fascinating as you discover new species of flora and fauna every mile you walk. One of the highlights of the climb up the Mount Kinabalu is observing the green pitcher plant devour its prey.

Standing at a majestic height of 4200 feet above sea level, a trek through the thickets of vegetation leading to the summit of Mount Kinabalu is a sense of rejuvenation to any city-strained soul.”

Poring Hot Springs The three day trek can be quite tiring with few sore and aching muscles. To relieve these, head to the Poring Hot Springs to soak in the calming and relaxing waters. But first is another walk to finish up on the quota of pictures of the

Borneo rainforest. There is walkway suspended about 40 feet from the Forest floor and offers panoramic views of the greenery that abounds there. Then head over to the Hot spring bath where you can lie down and soak in. Soak in the tropical sun, the freshness of the air and the soothing shades of green as the warm water has a somnolence inducing effect on you. 24 | M ALIND OM AG | JULY 2 018

VOYAGE | KOTA K IN ABALU

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park It is time to explore the sea now. The five islands of Gaya, Sapi, Sulug, Manukan and Mamutik offers a marine experience that you are not going to forget soon. The pristine clear waters of the Malacca Strait are a prime location for a marine water park. Not only is there a lot of the tropical sun, but these islands also offer a plethora of diving experiences. The beauty and colours of the marine fauna is a kaleidoscope waiting to be explored. You can relax in one of the shanties by the beaches on the largest island, Gaya where you can be hooked to a crispy fried “Catch of the Day served with a side of sambal. Mari Mari Cultural Village

The Night Markets of Kota Kinabalu None of the trips are ever complete without shopping and for the fill of local food and shopping, you can head to one of the night markets (also known as Pasar Malam in Malay). These daily markets are a riot of colour, sights, smells and noises and you swoop down on a hawker selling Kelupis: Glutinous rice and coconut milk cooked together and served in a fragrant leaf. Some of the other delicious food to try is the Tuaran noodles, Ngiu Chap beef noodles, Roti Cobra, Hinava and Latok. You can also find a dazzling collection of crystal and pearl jewellery that can have any girl lusting for more. Bargaining is an essential part of the buying process and the vendors actually smile in anticipation of a hard bargain.

The village of the last head hunters of Borneo, the Murut tribe is one of the most culturally engaging parts of the trip. Along with four other tribes, the Mari Mari culture village offers you an experience that takes you back centuries. You can spend a couple of days exploring the daily lives of different tribes, be it the horse riding Bajau or the Kadazan farmers. A stay at the village ensures that you can be a part of the majestical cultural programmes that takes place every evening.

Back to Basics Restaurant in New Delhi’s Hauz Khas Village By Sudipto De

Hauz Khas Village is a modern-day chic village located in New Delhi, that has some of the city’s best restaurants and designer fashion stores. One of the newest hot spots here is Back to Basics whereby one has to try out their food and experience the urban hip culture of Hauz Khas. Back to Basics serves as a hangout for the corporates during the day while transforming into lively bar as the sun goes down. The restaurant is alive with loads of wall graffiti and is lined with booth seats, soft sink in sofas and garden benches. The place is good for a casual time with friends and the menu plays quite a part in it. Let’s get down to eating now. The menu features a slew of Indian street food. The Aloo Chanaa Chaat (Spicy Potato Salad), Bombay Bhel (Indian mixture) and the Tandoori Chicken Chaat (boneless tandoori chicken) make for some lipsmacking accompaniments. For the vegetarians, we recommend the

Vegetable Cocktail Samosa Basket, Paneer Angarey and Jalapeno Cigar Rolls. There are quite a few nonvegetarian Indian starters that you might fall in love with. Dishes like Chicken Afghani, Chicken Tikka, Mutton Seekh Kebab and Kashundi Fish Tikka is some of the favourites amongst a lot of Bengalis. The variety of Indian appetisers at this restaurant is also plentiful. As to the main courses, lovers of North Indian food, will love the Khumb Hara Pyaaz (Mushrooms cooked with spring onions) and Bhaderwarhi Rajma (Kashmiri-style cooked Kidney Beans) that makes interesting combinations with a Navrattan Pulao. There are quite a classic yet rarely found dishes on the menu including Chicken Desi Curry and Railway Mutton Curry that is a must try. For those wanting to have an authentic Paratha (Indian flat bread),

Back to Basics will impress you with its range. There is Anda Parantha (Egg), Keema Parantha (minced meat) and even a Butter Chicken Parantha. If you are planning to break away from the North Indian mold, there is a range of Pizzas and Pastas that you might want to savour on. Not only that, it also features quite a few South Indian dishes including the quintessential Avial along with a Malabari Fish and Andhra Chicken Curry. End your meal with either a traditional Indian Gulaab (Rose) ki Phirni or a piping hot Walnut brownie with some ice cream. Back to Basics is one of the rare restaurants in Hauz Khas Village that serves food which exemplifies the best of North and South India and one place that you must try out while visiting Delhi.

The invention of modern wind tunnels has given skydivers a consistent and practical way to develop and hone skills that usually require jumping from a plane. Additionally, the increase in availability of wind tunnels has created a whole new genre of sport called bodyflight. It is one of the most exciting and fastest growing sports in the world. In Malaysia, AirRider Indoor Skydiving is a new facility located at one of the shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur, 1 Utama Shopping Centre. The sheer thought of lifting your entire body off the floor and fly like a bird has always been a dream for many people. For the longest time, the only way was to hop onto a plane and skydive from the air. However, this is an expensive pursuit coupled with a certain amount of risk. This is where indoor skydiving comes in perfectly. Indoor Skydiving is one of the most exciting and exuberating sport activity that can be indulged in a secure and controlled environment – making it safe for all abilities and ages. Opened earlier this year, AirRider

AirRider Indoor Skydiving is a family-friendly indoor skydiving facility for kids as young as three and those as old as 93. Zero experience in skydiving? Not a problem as no experience is required for the 50-second ride. The all-glass paneled circular chamber is located on level 2, 1 Utama E is a first in a shopping mall in Asia Pacific with a free viewing gallery and seating area. AirRider Indoor Skydiving at 1 Utama is the first in a shopping mall in Asia Pacific. The facility has been made using the highest in wind tunnel technology with state of the art infrastructure. With an integrated virtual reality devise mounted onto a special full-

faced VR helmet and with constant addition of locations and destinations to its database, flyers can whisk away to the Grand Canyon, China’s Great Wall or hover over the Palm Islands of Dubai. DID YO U K N OW

Did You Know? The tires on an airplane are designed to withstand incredible weight loads (38 tons!) and can hit the ground at 170 miles per hour more than 500 times before ever needing to get a retread. Additionally, airplane tires are inflated to 200 psi, which is about six times the pressure used in a car tire.

1

The safety instructions on most flight include how to use the oxygen masks that are deployed when the plane experiences a sudden loss in cabin pressure. The oxygen masks have about 15-minutes worth of oxygen and that is more than sufficient for the pilot to bring the plane to an altitude below 10,000 feet.

2

On long-haul flights, cabin crew can work 16-hour days. To help combat fatigue, some planes, like the Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliners, are outfitted with tiny bedrooms where the flight crew can get a little rest. The bedrooms are typically accessed via a hidden staircase that leads up to a small, lowceilinged room with 6 to 10 beds, a bathroom, and sometimes in-flight entertainment.

3

Every commercial airplane can safely fly with just one engine. Operating with half the engine power can make a plane less fuel-efficient and may reduce its range, but planes are designed and tested for such situations.

The golf course measures 6,467 and 6,005 metres from the black and blue tees, respectively. Though considered short by some golfers but with the sand and water hazards that Fream had so cleverly integrated into the varied contours and undulations of the greens, golfers will need more than just skill. Strategic thinking will be the order of the day and smart manoeuvres will ensure a challenging yet interesting playground. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER SCANDAL Scandal is a new kind of fragrance for women. During the day, it is a delicious fresh honey with the wonderful scent of gardenia and blood orange. At night, it is a sensual and scandalous honey combined with patchouli: an addiction that is just so Jean Paul Gaultier (JPG). Everything about the presentation leads one to think of excess and fun, from the silver statuesque legs of the lid to the velvet coating on the JPG signature tin can that houses the bottle. Scandal is the scent for those who do not shy away from controversy, who do not believe that there is ever such a thing as ‘too much’ of anything and most importantly, those who know how to have a heck of a good time. Available At Malindo Air’s Duty Free Onboard at RM380

Dr Vincent Candrawinata Scientist Dr Vincent Candrawinata, who resides in Australia is passionate about health and wellness. He completed his PhD research on Science at Newcastle University in Australia. Fuelled by his passion and with the desire to fulfil his mission, Dr Vincent became the world’s youngest PhD holder in his field. The Australian Government also honoured him with an award for his invention and contribution to the scientific community. “I was taught by my parents from a very young age that it is important to make a difference. This was my biggest motivation for going into science and research. I feel that as a scientist, it is my duty to use what I know to make this world a better place – and since I am in the field of nutrition and health – a healthier place,” said Dr Vincent. It all started back in 2010 when he led a joint research team at University of Newcastle and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries. During the research, he came across a group of compounds

called phenolic antioxidants. International research has demonstrated that because phenolic antioxidants work at the cellular level, they have the potential to promote general human health, reduce inflammation in the body as well as prevent and assist the body’s recovery from degenerative diseases such as cancers, heart diseases and pulmonary disease. Due to their high level of potency, phenolic antioxidants are regarded as the “holy grail” of dietary antioxidants. Before this discovery, there was one big problem: no one has been able to extract and activate these compounds without the use of chemical solvents such as methanol, ethanol and acetone. “There were many doubtful people and critics when I was doing my research because attempts at inventing a technology or method without the use of chemical solvents have been made all over the world for eight decades – without success. But I persevered and I ended up solving this 80-year mystery with my

breakthrough technology. Dr Vincent invented the world’s first technology to extract and activate these compounds to make them bioavailable in the body by using only water. Fast forward to 2015, he decided to take this invention and innovation and used it to produce Activated Phenolics, which is essentially the world’s most potent dietary antioxidant. This is the first and only complete commercialisation initiative that was conducted in an Australian university in the field of life sciences. In a nutshell, we brought science from the lab to the shelves where it is accessible by everyone. Activated Phenolics is currently in three of the products: two supplements in powder form and tablets (convenient for people onthe-move or frequent travellers); and the hydrating APSKIN face cream with SMARTSENSE technology, which protects, transforms and restores the skin at a cellular level. We want to take our products worldwide as we want to help others live their best lives possible.

We believe that value-added service is what keeps our passengers coming back for more. Economy Class guests are entitled to between 20 to 30kg baggage allowance, depending on the destination. Our reclining leather seats onboard are made for an easy and fuss-free journey. They also provide extra legroom with a spacious 32” seat pitch. Keeping yourself occupied on a flight is now a thing of the past with the variety of TV shows, movies, documentaries and games on the in-flight entertainment system. There is something for everyone, young and old. The USB port affixed on each seat can be used to access files and gives enough charge for all gadgets. Just plug in, access and that is it! Enjoy a hot meal on flights more than three hours and a hot snack for flights less than three hours.
