A Shore Thing: Bali vs Phuket If you are planning a beach getaway in Indonesia or Thailand, Bali and Phuket are sure to have grabbed your attention. Gorgeous ocean views, luxurious resorts, exciting nightlife, and warm hospitality – it is no wonder these islands attract over 10 million visitors every year! With over sixty stunning beaches between them, you cannot go wrong with either escape. Nevertheless, the discerning traveller should consider the delicate differences between Bali and Phuket.

VOYAGE | BALI VS PHU K ET

BALI The Indonesian province of Bali includes its namesake island and several smaller ones that surround it. Bali’s laidback and spiritual vibes are what attract visitors to the quaint island paradise. Balinese cuisine utilises indigenous traditions and influences from other Indonesian and regional cuisines, such as Chinese and Indian flavours, showcasing a variety of local spices making it a hit among locals and visitors alike. Home to most of Indonesia’s Hindu minority, Bali is known as the ‘Island of the Gods’. Renowned for beautiful Balinese architecture, it is estimated 10,000 to 20,000 temples are scattered across the province. Uluwatu Temple in Pecatu is built on a cliff over looking the sea. Every night crowds gather at the temple to watch over one hundred men perform fire dance based on the epic poem of Ramayana. The dance is known as the ‘Kecak’, a name that imitates the sound of their chants. Volcanic hillsides and mountain ranges on the island are also well worth exploring. Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, is a cool central mountain escape well-known for its arts, markets, and peaceful rice paddy fields. Further north, Pura Besakih or The Mother Temple of Besakih, is a temple complex perched nearly 1000 meters up the side of Mount Agung. At just over 3,000 meters, this volcano is Bali’s highest point.

However, unlike Bali, if you are looking for a cultural show you will not find it at a temple. Luckily, you can feast your eyes on colourful performances at the ‘Siam Niramit Phuket’. The elaborate stage show covers Thailand’s history and culture and features over 100 actors and 500 costumes!

PHUKET Thailand’s second smallest province, Phuket consists of the country’s largest island, Phuket Island, and 32 smaller islands off its coast. Although the province is a tenth of the size of Bali, do not let size fool you –the island is filled with adventure. Its colourful nightlife attracts visitors looking for excitement, while its peaceful beaches and mountains are great for relaxing. Covered with charming SinoPortuguese heritage buildings, Phuket Town is a food haven waiting 2 0 | M ALIND OM AG | JUNE 2 018

to be explored. The town’s local menu and delicious fare has earned it a spot on UNESCO’s ‘World’s Leading Cities of Gastronomy’ list. Cultural influences from its trading port are reflected in its cuisine including a mix of Thai, Malay, Chinese and Portuguese which makes up Phuket’s Peranakan or Baba cuisine – a similar mix to that of Malacca’s in Malaysia. Beautiful Buddhist temples dot the province’s shores such as the Big Buddha Phuket, a magnificent 45-metre tall marble statue, which sits upon Nakkerd Hills with an unbeatable panorama of the south.

It is the first of its kind in Malaysia, Plane In The City will be a 90-minutes experience revolving around an actual Boeing 737 aircraft, during when its

Wing walk.

‘passengers’ will get a chance-of-alifetime to do things such as taking a ‘selfie’ while sticking their heads out of the Pilot’s cockpit, walking on the wings of the aircraft, enjoying a fine-dining meal serenaded by today’s hit music and many more. Sitting only 20 people per session to maintain exclusivity, food aboard the aircraft will be served according to the package by Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur, chosen based on their exciting menu and great-tasting cuisine. “We live in an era of experience. Consumers are now demanding newer and more interactive models of products and services. They want to experience different realities, and Plane in the City will allow them to do just that”, said

Arvin Randhawa, CEO of TwoSpicy Entertainment, the brainchild of this concept. Guests may also add on a selection of canapes, desserts and celebration cakes for birthdays and anniversaries. Not only that, the runway lights used around the aircraft will also be actual runway lights used on airport runways around the world. With all the above and many more to come, Plane in The City will definitely elevate your dining experience to a whole new level and satisfy the cravings of all your five senses. This is one experience that you do not want to miss out on. For more information, log in to www.planeinthecity.com.

Guangzhou

G

uangzhou, once better known to Westerners as Canton, is China’s busiest transport and trade hub and the third-largest city in China. The giant metropolis is home to both gleaming towers and lush alleys, and its history as a strategic trade port to the South China Sea has afforded it a colonial background and culturally diverse population that combine to give Guangzhou a cosmopolitan flair. From its early days as an inland port, Guangzhou has developed into the future without losing sight of the past. This is where you will find skyscrapers sitting happily next to ancient temples; where you can eat in grand restaurants one night and the next graze on Cantonese dim sum in little hole-in-the-wall cafes; where 24 | M ALIND OM AG | JUNE 2 018

you can shop until you drop or watch the locals chilling in the city’s parks. Here are some of the must-visit attractions in the City of Five Rams.

Chimelong Tourist Resort

For a full day or even a week of fun, Chimelong Tourist Resort has it all: amusement park, international circus, water-park, safari park, and birds park. If that is not enough, the neighbourhood city Zhuhai has an Ocean Kingdom aquarium, too. During weekends and holidays, it can get quite busy.

Shamian Island

Separated from the mainland by a small canal, Shamian Island used to be an important port for foreign trade from the Song to Qing dynasties. Because of its history, it is like a small European town in the middle of

Canton Tower

The landmark of Guangzhou, the Canton Tower rises up to almost 600 meters and illuminates the scenery with colorful lights in the evening. It was briefly the tallest tower in the world and includes coffee shops, restaurants, observation decks, and rides for the adrenaline junkies.

Cantonese Cuisine

With a time-honored history, Guangzhou has a wide variety of local foods, among which the most famous dish is dim sum. If you are invited for a Cantonese “morning tea” or “yum cha,” do not be disappointed that your hosts are just offering tea, because they are actually offering you the best of Cantonese food along with Chinese tea. Dim sum means “a little bit of heart” and thus usually come in small portions, and have many different types. The main ones are dumplings with various fillings, noodles and rice noodles - fried and in soup, steamed meat, vegetables, porridge, buns, rice noodle rolls, pastries and sweet soups

Shopping Paradise

Being the centre of the Pearl River Delta, also dubbed as “the world’s factory”, Guangzhou is a place where you can find everything at a very

competitive price, for foreigners and local Chinese alike. There are quite a number of wholesale markets in the city, ranging from electronic products to clothes, shoes, accessories, bags and suitcases and many others. If you are not up for wholesale, it is also a retail centre. Shopping centres and streets provide loads of options at very attractive prices.

Baomo Garden

Located in Panyu, about an hour away from the Guangzhou city center, Baomo Garden is a fine example of Southern Chinese architecture and art of gardening. Baomo Garden was originally built at the end of Qing dynasty, but unfortunately destroyed in the 1950s. A few years later, its reconstruction began and the garden is now back to its former glory.

Baiyun Mountain

The Baiyun Scenic Area with 30 mountain peaks, the highest of which is 382 meters (1,253 ft.) above sea level, is a chance to escape the bustling city life and breathe in some fresh air. It becomes crowded on holidays, but on weekdays it is possible to enjoy the quiet climb up the stairs. For a beautiful view of the city, a cable car can be taken up to the Peak Park.

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees

The Buddhist temple was originally built by the orders of Emperor Wu in 537. Later in Northern Song Dynasty when it was rebuilt, it was renamed according to a poem by Su Shi. The main structure inside the temple is the nine-story Flower Pagoda with a colorful exterior worthy of its name. JUNE 2 018 | M ALIND OM AG | 25

CO NNECT | FEAST : A K IR A BACK

With every restaurant starting from the roadside eateries to the swanky ones serving out some finger-licking grub, it is difficult to pinpoint the best place to find South East Asian food in Bangkok. But Akira Back’s newest offering at the Marriott Marquis does so with an effortless ease. The Korea-born American chef’s flagship outlet in Thailand opened late last year and is already enthralling guests with some of his famous creations. Located on the 37th floor of the hotel, it is steeped in luxury with a magnificent view of the bustling city below. Done up in colours of black and gold, neoclassical arches made out of Shinto ropes give the restaurant an uberluxurious feel. There’s also a Sushi and Omakase Bar for those who prefer the modern American style of Japanese dining. Born as Soong Ook Back in Seoul, Akira’s first love was actually baseball when he migrated to America. After a stint in snowboarding, his culinary dreams were ignited and he started as a Sushi Chef after attending culinary school in Colorado. He opened his first restaurant at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and was awarded a Michelin Star for his restaurant DOSA in Seoul. His latest venture features some of his signature dishes bringing together the Korean, Japanese and American cuisines in a true East meets West style. The menu is a collection of plates

both hot and cold. Although Chef Back’s flavours are characteristically Japanese, a few Western elements do put their hands up at the correct time. The popcorn tofu brings together the silken texture along with sriracha sauce and a ranch dressing, a throwback to his upbringing in Colorado. There is also the AB taco, a Taco filled with a Bulgogi made with the rare Wagyu beef combined with the citrusy hit of roasted tomatoes and some ponzu. The Korean roots of the Chef Akira comes through with quite a few of curry based dishes. The Grilled Alaskan king crab introduces the sweet meat of the crab with a dynamite sauce that gives it an explosive, spicy flavour. One of the dishes that you must try out is the AB tuna pizza. Although I would not call it a traditional pizza, it is a mouthful of flavours that you would not forget soon. Thin slices of freshly cut tuna are laden on top by an umami flavoured aioli. The best way to end a meal at Akira Back is delicate yet intricate beehive: a meringue which is broken open to reveal a tangy lime custard inside. Lovers of chocolate will appreciate the pillow: a cornucopia of a chocolate sorbet paired with an earl gray mousse which adds a hit of bitterness to it along with a splattering of some chocolate soil, morello cherries and some crunchy chocolate pears.

INDULGE | SPA

Pancha Kosha Himalayan Spa at Dwarika’s Resort, Dhulikhel Dwarika’s Resort Dhulikhel, promises to give you the premier spa experience in Nepal. A 45-minute drive out of Kathmandu, it is situated on 14 acres, facing the Himalayas and it has been designed with a traditional Nepali village in mind. A rustic setting, maybe, but luxury abounds here – there is an infinity pool, a dedicated spa restaurant, several sound chambers, a Himalayan salt room, organic dining and even a helipad! Activities are well thought out which includes pottery, farming, yoga, gardening and meditation. Best of all, this is a zero-waste, chemicalfree and ecologically sustained natural living space and is truly one of its kind in Nepal. Located an hour from The Dwarika’s Hotel, Pancha Kosha Himalayan Spa is a sanctuary for healing and purification. It offers an experience modelled upon the ancient traditions of care and respect that have

developed in the Himalayan region over several millennia. The name of the spa is derived from the wisdom of the Vedas that claims that your Atman or self is which made up of five layers of being – the physical, the intellectual, emotional and the essence of the absolute. Combined, they offer an authentic experience of life. Thus, any treatment at the Pancha Kosha Spa is a journey into the self! Decorated with Nepali antique pieces and motifs from the Terai region, the spa utilises a rich diversity of natural herbs, oils and essences from the entire Himalayan range. Particularly good here are the body scrubs (often with traditional rice

powder, ginseng and neem), the Ayurvedic massages and the herbal, wooden steam baths. With integration of the Vedic Scriptures, Buddhist Medicine and Himalayan Knowledge primarily into its wellness offerings since its inception, Pancha Kosha Himalayan Spa has much more to offer than a normal stay, where the spa treatments are part of a well-being journey. All spa treatment products use natural herbs extracted from Himalayan region and prepared individually at the spa for therapy, to counterbalance the dominant elements. Before treatment, a residence doctor examines the body type and provides personalised counseling with suggestions to match best treatment for you!

DID YO U K N OW

Did You Know? Those white lines in the sky are called vapor trails or contrails, and they are the result of aviation fuel being burned. When the fuel is burned, it produces carbon dioxide and water, which condenses into tiny droplets behind a plane in the air. If you pay close attention, you can see that there is always a gap between a plane and the vapor trails— that is because it takes time for the gas to form as droplets

1

Ear popping can be an unfortunate side effect of flying, but it is not one that can be remedied easily. Ears pop because when planes get higher in the sky, the surrounding atmosphere becomes thinner. While there is no way around this happening, experts recommend chewing gum or yawning to sort your ears out.

2

Who was the world’s first airplane passenger? The honour goes to Charles Furnas, a mechanic who was taken aloft by Wilbur Wright on May 14, 1908. The first scheduled commercial flight with a paying passenger happened six years later—and commercial aviation was born.

CERRUTI 1881 – Odissea Master

Cerruti 1881 embraces cutting edge of innovation with the Odissea Master. Nothing about this watch is ordinary. The square case is dramatically bolted down by silver screws on an ion plated gun case. Lines on the bezel and the indices are all angled inward toward a vanishing point at the center of the watch, giving it a three-dimensional infinity box effect. Square chronograph windows sit on a diamond pattern while white hands with a cutout boldly rotate around the surface. Small red aspects give a hint of colour, most noticeably on the triangular minute hand and etched around the crown. The depth and angular patterns throughout the watch are juxtaposed against a matte black rubber strap with the Cerruti 1881 logo in raised letters. The richness of layers, patterns and amazingly crafted details are balanced with a deep black rubber strap, resulting in a sleek timepiece that walks the line, but never goes over the top. Available at Cerruti 1881 Timepiece Outlets at RM1859

Gaming Enthusiast: S Y E D QA M A R A N Syed Qamaran from India is a Gemologist by profession but his passion lies in the latest gaming technology. More accurately in virtual reality (VR) games. Virtual reality gaming is where a person can experience being in a three dimensional environment and interact with that environment during a game. This is an essential and most interesting part of the game. Virtual reality games are becoming very popular with many teenagers who love the graphics, animations

worlds to choose from which include fantasy, sport, historical and science fiction. Some are loosely based upon the real world but others such as fantasy worlds are as the name says: they are completely disconnected from the real world which is also part of their attraction. Qamaran and his business partner Mohamed Sathak who has technology background and runs a software company with 500 employees brainstormed the idea and started VR games in Chennai.

“I have always had passion in gaming since small and now games has advanced to a whole new level whereby you can appear as an avatar in the virtual world”

and best of all, the feel of the game as if you are in it. After all, what could be better than the chance to interact with top end technology gaming. “I have always had passion in gaming since small and now games has advanced to a whole new level whereby you can appear as an avatar in the virtual world which can take on any shape or form you wish. It feels real with movements and sound that depicts the real scenario,” says Qamaran. “There are a range of virtual

The duo create their own games which they develop with a team of people in India. “I came across VR games in a mall in United States and played couple of games and became hooked to it. I immediately saw the potential of the game and how far it can go. That is when I had the idea to create a better VR game and bring it to Chennai as it does not have much exposure in VR and what better way then attract younger crowd into VR through games,”

added Qamaran. The future plan is to spread their wings into various other cities across Asia and have a keen interest in Malaysia as well. And at a later stage they want to use VR in various fields like education, medical, real estate and more. They also have plans to be a service provider for the companies in various fields. The VR game parlour is at The Grand Mall at Velachery, Chennai, India. For more information, visit http://www.thevr.world.
