For many of us, September is a month to sit back and reflect at what we’ve done throughout the year so far. For those of you who haven’t been travelling as much as you want to for leisure, perhaps now is a good time to start. Especially with the attractive airfare that Malindo Air offers to exciting destinations like Penang, Bali, Bandung, Bangkok, Delhi and many more. Our cover story this month will give you an idea of what to do in Trivandrum while those who are visiting Kota Kinabalu should definitely check out the North Borneo Railway. If you’re planning to visit Singapore for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, we have the ultimate guide to help you survive the race weekend. Other interesting reads include our stay at the Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, our posh dining experience at the prestigious Nobu Kuala Lumpur and a sleek new ride that you might want to consider enjoying on your next visit to the city. In preparation to welcome the third quarter of 2015, we look forward to fly to interesting new destinations with China and Australia being on the top of our list. The arrival of two new Boeing 737NG aircraft in August have upped our
number of aircrafts to 12 Boeing 737NG and 11 ATR turboprop, making up a total of 23 aircrafts up to date with four more aircraft to arrive by the end of the year. With the increasing number of aircraft, we are excited to increase our number of routes as well. And I am very proud to announce that Malindo Air is now flying from Kuala Lumpur to Trivandrum and from Penang to Trichy starting from 26 September. Two years in and we have seen the airline grow rapidly from just two aircraft to 23 aircraft, flying from two routes to 32 routes, with 558 departures weekly, and we hope to fly with that pace in years to come. Till next month, have a pleasant flight and happy reading!

Flying High for Kids Launched in December 2013, the Flying High for Kids World Balloon Project is a non-profit, four-and-a-half year project in support of UNICEF. The overland hot air ballooning journey through more than 100 countries takes the UNICEF balloon to schools and UNICEF projects, with an aim of raising awareness and funds for UNICEF’s work. The project has the full support of UNICEF and the project team will be working closely with them throughout. Education will be a big theme during the project, linking schools around the world by flying or tethering the balloon at schools and exchanging communications between them. This gives the children an opportunity to learn about a way of life different to their own. Throughout the project, the Flying High for Kids team will be witnessing UNICEF’s work first hand, and will keep track of progress being made on projects over time. www.flyinghighforkids.com

hile many cities of India are already marked as popular tourist destinations in the global map, Thiruvananthapuram, which is still commonly recognised by its colonial name, Trivandrum, may not be one of them. Located on the west coast, near the southern tip of mainland India, this enchanting land is the capital city of the compelling state of Kerala. Just as how a remote island is usually known more for its immense beauty, serenity and preserved nature in comparison to commercialised ones, this city has maintained the authenticity of its wealthy heritage and culture to justify an intriguing visit.

Apart from being the heart centre for the political scene of Kerala, the city serves as a popular medical tourism destination with their renowned Ayurveda recuperation treatment and therapies. It is also home to several prominent educational institutions, making it one of the most recognised academic hubs of India. Most travellers make a pit stop at Trivandrum, which is a convenient gateway for a retreat at the nearby beaches of Kovalam that carries the meaning of a grove of coconut trees. However, the city itself offers mesmerising attractions. Some of the main ones are the ma jestic Kowdiar Palace, which has great historical roots and is the official residence of the local royal family, the divine Padbanabhaswamy temple, which is a famous Hindu temple of Lord Vishnu, the Napier Museum, which holds a rare collection of archaeologists and historic artefacts and Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, which is reputed to be the oldest of its kind in Asia that also offers picturesque stretch of

An hour’s train ride away from Trivandrum lies the seaside resort of Varkala that plays home to Hindu pilgrims who come from near and afar to worship in the 2,000-year-old Sri Janardhana Swami Temple and ritualistically cleanse themselves in the mineral spring waters that flow from Varkala’s ruby-red laterite cliffs that overlook the fittingly named “Beach of Redemption”. The beauty of Varkala has been attracting the likes of backpackers searching for untouched beach paradise, and they could have found just that, years ago. But over the years, the natural wonder has seen an increase in the numbers of street hawkers and shack-dwellers setting up their shops along the top of the cliffs. Coconut palms have also been replaced with cheap guesthouses and open-air cafes, while local children roam around offering cheap jewelleries, yards of cloth, and back-to-nature hippie gear. Despite the change in its surroundings, the sand at the base of the cliffs stays relatively free of human pollution due to its reputation as a holy beach. Instead of being treated as a convenient public toilet facility or a waste-dumping ground, the beach is colonised by devotees of Vishnu who attend to solemn puja sessions, offering banana leaves piled with boiled rice and brightly coloured marigolds to be carried away by the ocean. At Varkala, you can find a quiet cove for sunbathing on sand that is usually soft and lovely, without the crowd that is inescapable in Kovalam. The best time for some peace and calm is in the morning, before the gawkers, hawkers and tourists start to flock into the beach. Besides the beach, you can also enjoy other activities, including Kathakali demonstrations, elephant rides, village tours, and backwater trips. You can also take a pleasant evening walk or auto-rickshaw ride to the cliffs to visit Sunset Point. If you don’t plan to walk back, keep the rickshaw for your return trip.

botanicals, a captivating museum, breath-taking paintings, kids’ garden and 3D movies within its vicinity. Most of the main attractions are in the heart of the city, making it convenient for tourists to commute from one location to the other by foot, city buses, taxis or India’s iconic auto-rickshaws. Apart from the tourist locations mentioned, there are several other beaches, spiritual temples, Victorian influenced museums, glorious architecture and wildlife sanctuaries, which are definitely worth a visit. However, it is best to be remindful that most spiritual
shrines would require a cultural or decent dress code. Food for the soul is usually one of the main, if not the most important element when visiting any destination. The general cuisine of Kerala is complemented with abundance of spices and coconut in comparison to other states of India. These will include a variety of vegetarian and nonvegetarian food. Typically, one can enjoy the authentic South-Indian cuisines like dhosai, idli, curries and varieties of scrumptious Biryani rice. The Indian snacks in Trivandrum are uncountable, be it savouries or sweet desserts. They MALINDOMAG | 15

are all commonly rich with flavours in the truest sense and one cannot leave the city without trying several of them. The most talked about ones are banana chips fried in pure coconut oil and halwa, which is a type of rice flour sweet cake that can be easily obtained throughout the city. Trivandrum captures one of its main cultural roots through performing arts. Kathakali, is the most reputed and internationally recognised form of classical art that expresses a sophisticated dance drama claiming a tradition of past centuries. The colourful ornaments, outstanding music, and prominent props truly will create a fascinating experience for its viewers. The performances usually are widely held when the evening folds in. Due to a more conservative culture, late evenings are
normally spent with families and close knit friends indoors. Outdoor entertainments are less conventional whereby they are spent watching performing arts. However, there is another dimension of nightlife in Kovalam, which is more vibrant during the night. Foreign vacationers usually find this as a preferred location due to the cool sea breeze and bars, which are open till wee hours. Of course, there are also pubs and bars at hotel lounges for guests to unwind and enjoy some music. Trivandrum is certainly a destination that has much to offer holiday makers. It indeed will be a unique and unconventional family vacation, honeymoon or even just an escapade. Given the vast options of wonderful attractions, this city should definitely be your next choice of destination for a break with your loved ones.

transporting them along the lifeline of Sabah. Refurbished to recreate the nostalgic romance of people travelling by steam train in the days of the Chartered Company and the British Colonial Office, both the exterior and interior provide an environment that would have been typical of stepping onto a train in the 1900s. The exterior utilises the traditional deep green and cream
of the original North Borneo Railway, with carved brass logos showcasing the original design of a tiger holding a rail wheel, standing on the royal crown. The interior highlights the natural woods of Sabah where passengers can enjoy this unique experience on one of the five fully refurbished colonialstyle passenger train carriages that can accommodate a total of 180 passengers. On board, passengers are treated to a rare delight of a local breakfast, as well as a tiffin-style lunch, which features a blend of Asian and Continental cuisine. The North Borneo Railway is built and operated to the highest of international standards and is fully compliant with modern safety standards. This four-hour train ride runs only two weekly departures on Wednesday and Saturday. Therefore, prior booking of at least one day before departure is highly recommended to avoid any disappointment.

Cultural Stop Telok Ayer Street is one of Singapore’s oldest street gems. It gained prominence in the 1820s because it served as a landing ground for early immigrants. Under the Raffles Town Plan in 1822, which saw the creation of designated development for different ethnic groups in Singapore by its founder Sir Stamford Raffles, Telok Ayer Street belonged in a district that was designated to be a Chinese District. The concentration of religious buildings and Chinese clan associations along the street, gives both citizens and travelers an insight into the life of the early Chinese immigrants. Telok Ayer Street used to face the sea and served as a docking bay for boats and sampans for the early immigrants. Grateful for a safe journey, many of them set up altars and worship houses to give thanks to the gods, which led to the building of the Thian Hock Keng Temple – one of Singapore’s oldest temple – in 1842.

My compliments to the Captain for making the passengers excited and we had fun with the information provided. My wish is for all the other flight captains to do the same. It makes another milestone for Malindo Air and its valued passengers. Well done and keep it up! – Hariss, Malaysia
This is my third time flying with Malindo Air and I was on board OD1217 from Subang to Johor Bahru on 17 July 2015. A staff by the name of Idzham from the check-in counter made my experience a pleasant one. He greeted all the passengers in a friendly manner and provided a good service. While I was onboard, crew members Nicholes and Erica greeted me with a clear voice and a nice smile. Captain Ezam and co-pilot Raymond, I would like to thank you for the safe landing, it was smooth and great. Overall, it was an amazing experience. Thank you, Malindo Air and I can’t wait to fly with you again soon! – Clement Lee, Malaysia
I flew on Thursday, 16 July from Kota Bharu to KLIA2 at 5.50pm with flight OD2303. I arrived late at the airport and the counter was already closed by then. As I had an international flight right before my local flight, Malindo’s staff gave me extraordinary assistance to make sure I get to board my flight and I really appreciate their effort. They were so cooperative and responsible, and I am truly grateful for such service. Definitely made a good impression on me and I wish to make Malindo Air my first choice to every destination available. – Dr. Majid, Malaysia
I highly applaud your collaborative efforts to assist Kelab Golf Negara Subang in the quest of an insurance policy claim. The assistance rendered would be aptly described as quick as lightning and with efficacy. Kudos and bravo to the employees of Malindo Air. Keep up the good work, Customer Service Department. – Siti Zulaika, Malaysia
Your service from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur was nothing less than perfect. Staff, check-in, aircraft, reception, offered services, all state-of-the-art. I was truly amazed by the service given to us. I wish you a very long and prosperous path. You certainly offer a much superior service than the rivals. Best wishes to Malindo Air. – Daniel, Singapore

The room features a loft-like decor with soaring eleven-foot ceiling, ultra-comfortable Aloft signature platform beds, oversized shower heads and Bliss Spa products. Apart from the usual American breakfast menu, you can find local delights like roti jala with curry and prawn noodles, which I personally enjoyed having. But if you’re rushing to head out and have no time for a sit-down breakfast, you can grab and go at re:fuel. When the night approaches, it’s time to chill out over colourful cocktails and good music. Being a fan of live music, I decided to hang out at the W xyz Bar on the ground floor where they serve everything from pints to pinots to signature drinks, plus a snack-attack menu, to check out the young and upcoming indie bands during their regular Live-at-Aloft events. VIEW Nicolette Ng brings her appetite to the 56th floor of Petronas Tower 3 for a delightful lunch at the world-class Nobu Kuala Lumpur
A prestigious name in Japanese cuisine, Nobu has been the talk of town since it made its way to Kuala Lumpur in September last year with a high-profile opening graced by the presence of Chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa himself and Hollywood celebrity, Rebert de Niro who’s also the co-founder of Nobu. And long after procrastinating for a visit, I finally gave in to my desires to dine at the restaurant. While most people would opt for the authentic Nobu experience 30 | MALINDOMAG
during dinner, I decided to go for the more casual and affordable lunch option. Seated by the window, concentrating on the menu was quite a challenge as I feast my eyes on a breathtaking view of Kuala Lumpur’s city center and the Petronas Twin Towers. Designed by the brilliant architect, Severine Tatangelo from Studio PCH, Nobu KL is a conceptual marvel incorporating 360 degree views with an open kitchen, Sushi bar and a Dining Room leading to the Nobu Lounge & Bar that stimulate one’s senses upon entry. menu, I ordered myself the Buah-Naga, a mocktail mix of dragon fruit, elderflower and Yamamomo that makes an ideal thirst quencher on a sunny day. Other interesting mocktail choices are Shichimi Passion, a mix of passion fruit, house-made honey syrup, fresh lime juice and Shichimi, as well as Calamansi Shiso, which is a mix of calamansi limes, shiso and ginger ale. Lunch at Nobu offers an extensive variety of sets and bento boxes that will definitely be a treat for those who love choices. For starters, I ordered the Yellowtail Sashimi Jalapeno, which was highly recommended as a palate cleanser. The dish may seem simple, but the art of eating it enhances its flavours ultimately. Unlike the usual sashimi dishes, one is required to wrap a slice of Jalapeno and coriander leaf in the skillfully sliced Yellowtail, and have a good dip of the yuzu soy sauce before taking a bite into it. If done right, every mouthful will fill your mouth with a burst of flavours that I can only describe with one word – perfection! Picking a main isn’t easy when you’re spoilt for choice, but being an avid lover of the cod fish, I went with the Matsuhisa Bento which features Nobu’s signature Black
Cod alongside Sashimi Salad with Matsuhisa Dressing, Assorted Sushi, Baby Tiger Shrimp Tempura with Ponzu and Vegetables Spicy Garlic with Rice. The Black Cod is coated in Nobu’s special miso sauce that has a slightly grainy texture that smoothens and blends into the delicate flesh of the cod with every bite – definitely a treat for any cod lovers. Other recommendations for mains include the Squid Pasta Donburi and the Norwegian Salmon Crispy Leaves, which is a generous piece of grilled Norwegian salmon with skin that’s crisped to perfection, served on a bed of deep-fried spinach leaves and heavily drizzled with Yuzu butter sauce. Of course a meal at any restaurant will never be complete without a dessert or two, but in this case, three delectable desserts at Nobu. I had the Homemade
Mochi Ice Cream in Vanilla and Matcha flavours, the Chocolate Sata Andagi, a Japanese doughnut filled with dark chocolate ganache served with caramelised pistachio, raspberry sauce and pandan ice cream for a local twist, and my personal favourite, the Suntory Whisky Cappuccino, which is a spoonful of finesse with different layers of textures – smooth brulee, crispy chocolate bits and creamy foam. Serving up to its reputation, Nobu KL did not disappoint with its high-quality dishes that are injected with an interesting burst of flavours that is guaranteed to excite your tastebuds. With delicious palate pleasers combined with an impeccable bird’s eye view of the city, Nobu KL shall remain in my go-to list for power lunches or simply to indulge after a month of hard work. Playing the
Game Understanding the nature of the game leads to a new generation of professionals that would take the greens by storm. by: CM Chong, Hon. Secretary PGAM & Captain Team Malaysia. Causeway Trophy
G
olf in Malaysia has certainly taken a turn. We’ve seen it grow from persimmon woods to the now high-tech weightshifting titanium heads. Malaysian golf has grown from old school golf teaching professionals, to professionals now yielding the most sophisticated video software. Call it ‘the 21st century flow over’. Golfers are now educated in the search for a qualified golf coach. You now have an abundance of qualified golf professionals to choose from. Given the fact that Malaysian golf professionals started from roots that were taught by our western counterparts, we have definitely evolved and are more expressive in many ways. There are more and more qualified Malaysian professionals coming into the scene, thanks to the emergence of golf colleges and professional academies that have helped contribute to our higher education in professional golf. In the level of building stars, we have had top junior golfers being ranked in the world, including under 8-years world champions to US collegiate NCAA champions. We have gone from the government 32 | MALINDOMAG
initiated TDC Tour to the privately owned PGM Tour. Though the former was no match for the wellfunded latter, the appeal has grown and has allowed mere mortals to pinch a taste of professional golf. Well, after much campaigning it has turned out to be the best tour our shores have ever seen. Thus, the question arises of the lasting ability of such organisations and their ability to groom our young hopefuls. Juniors need proper channels that will help elevate their plight – perhaps a ma jor supporter that will back the cause through and through. They need a plan that will groom them into young professionals. Playing in as many tournaments as they can does not ensure them a proper and well-rounded growth. They must be made to understand the path to building a champion. Finishing their education is a big part of this grooming process. By going through golf college they will learn that when fighting, they should fight tirelessly and when competing, they should compete with a big heart and never give up. In line with such growth in prize money and tournament exposure, perhaps we will soon see
an emergence of a world beater, a Rory McIlroy or a Lydia Ko from the bigger tours around the region. We now have the biggest stage that will have the young salivating with passion (if they’re groomed to notice the opportunities). We have the CIMB Classic from the PGA Tour and the Sime Darby LPGA Championship from the LPGA Tour. Both tournaments post positive gateways for our young and aspiring. Times have definitely changed and currently, the combined World Tours are worth just over a billion USD. Surely a plan is being derived by the relevant authorities to propel talents to much bigger and higher plateaus, and hopefully rewarded with a spot at the Olympics 2016. As a former National Team Coach, I’ve worked with a diverse amount of talents. These talents need to be sculpted and groomed towards the right direction. It is important that they understand techniques, time frames, training, regimes, not leaving out selecting a suitable team and the list goes on. Yes, the team that supports the players should drive them to achieve their goals – both shortterm and long-term.

a Design Icon
Updated The iconic Audi TT takes a serious facelift this year and we have the inside scoop
F
irst introduced in 1995 as a concept car during the Frankfurt Motor Show, the TT concept from Audi captured the imagination of attendees with its bold silhouette, geometric features and a formally coherent language. Because of the overwhelmingly positive feedback Audi received at that time, that concept car was made a reality in 1998 with the first-generation TT coupe. Over the past twenty years, the Audi TT has consistently been the epitome of an authentic design icon, simply because the team at Audi dared to push the boundaries of what truly defined a sports car. The third-generation TT

you see today is a result of their philosophy of putting no limits in engineering a performanceoriented, emotionally sculpted, technological tour-de-force that embodies everything that they stand for. With the new Audi TT, the curves, contours and proportions are reminiscent of the firstgeneration TT, revisiting many of those original ideas, but evolutionary stylistic updates ensuring a dynamic and modern design. Measuring 4,177mm in length, the third-generation TT coupe is shorter by 10mm than the previous model, but comes with a longer wheelbase, making for
shorter overhangs and an overall more aggressive stance. Horizontal lines dominate the front of the new TT and its Singleframe grille is much broader and flatter than that of previous models, with a powerful line dividing it into two zones. True to its roots, the latest TT retains a number of trademark design features including a retractable rear spoiler, which extends from the trunk lid to improve air resistance and downforce at speeds above 120km/h, a nostalgically stylish lidless aluminium fuel flap surrounded by socket screws, as well as signature round twin exhaust tailpipes. This sporty coupe’s lean and muscular personality is also suitably reinforced with its distinctive xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and allweather lights, which look good any time of day. The interior of the new Audi TT continues the theme of “less is more”, with taut surfaces, floating lines and clearly structured spaces underlining the car’s pure sporting intent. The round air-conditioner vents resembling the turbines of a jet engine, a classic TT feature, are also prominently visible the moment you get into the car. At the heart of the thirdgeneration TT’s design revolution are two ingenious design

controls for the air conditioning system directly into its vents. The new multifunction plus sports contour leather-covered steering wheel comes with a flattened rim and shift paddles, reinforcing its sporty intentions. As a 2+2 seater meant for daily use, the new Audi TT also features electrically adjustable Alcantara sports front seats that are exceptionally comfortable yet sporty with integrated head restraints, as well as highly contoured and pneumatically adjustable four-way lumbar support. The trunk has a capacity of 305L, which is actually 13L more than before and can be extended by folding the rear seat backrests forward for a total luggage space of 712L. Honed for an exhilarating and engaging drive, the new Audi TT will arrive in Malaysia with the latest 2.0 TFSI 4-cylinder in-line petrol engine, generating 230hp and 370Nm from 1,600rpm to 4,300rpm. Like all current Audi models, the new TT also comes equipped
Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), parking aid plus with selective display and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). One particular highlight is the progressive steering, which is an electromechanically driven system that adapts its assistance based on the speed of the car so that it can be steered precisely with minimal adjustment of the steering wheel whether in downtown traffic or winding country roads. The Audi drive select system also comes standard on the new Audi TT, allowing drivers to control the engine characteristics and the steering assistance to suit their specific styles, choosing between comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency and individual modes. In efficiency mode for instance, Audi drive select influences the air-conditioning and the start-stop system accordingly to consistently ensure the best fuel consumption rates. Function follows form with the new Audi TT and the definite centrepiece of this sports coupe’s technological renaissance is the
Encompassing a 12.3” high-resolution LCD display located just behind the new flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel, the Audi virtual cockpit is a full y customisable interface that sets new standards in driver engagement with its dynamic animations and precise graphics. Drivers can choose between two display modes; Classic and Progressive. In the classic view, the speedometer and rev counter are in the foreground; in progressive mode the virtual instruments are smaller, with the space that becomes free as a result providing ample room for other MMI radio functions, such as the infotainment and telephone features. The all-new Audi TT coupe is priced at RM284,900 and available in a total of ten colour choices: Ibis White, Brilliant Black, Glacier White, Scuba Blue, Tango Red, Floret Silver, Monsoon Grey, Nano Grey, Mythos Black and a special Daytona Grey with pearl effect. TRAVEL HOROSCOPE
S t ar r in g Septembe r Virgo (23 August - 22 September)
Aquarius (20 January - 18 February)
It wouldn’t feel like a vacation if you weren’t doing something to jumpstart your creativity, expand your business or further your career with Saturn stabilising your sector of finances. Just don’t head out with a companion who thinks you should be cuddling on the beach when you’d rather be typing your latest and greatest new idea. A little space can reap a big reward.
Satisfy the explorer in you – find the mysterious depths of the oceans, the cobblestoned side-streets of an ancient city, or simply explore your partner’s anatomy. Just make sure you’re set up to be comfortable. While that doesn’t mean a five-star splurge, you’ll want to head out with a good night’s sleep behind you. You’re all about discovery – as long as what you discover aren’t bedbugs.
Pisces (19 February - 20 March)
This is not the time to get to know yourself (or anyone else) at a yoga retreat or treat yourself to a lazy week at the spa. You want and will have the next hot thing, the grandest good time, and on your own terms, not someone else’s. That means no pre-organised packaged trips and no whiners allowed. Swap that best friend out for the hottie you met on the airplane who lives in another time zone. Stop analysing whether it will work. Just go!
Aries (21 March - 19 April)
A nice surprise Aries, what you want to do and what you should do are for once, one and the same. Use your rare vacation to soak up some history or see the great wonders of the world. Ditto with food – you actually crave healthy meals for a change. Take advantage of these happy coincidences and bring a travel companion that gives you room to breathe.
Taurus (20 April - 20 May)
Put away your sensible shoes and pack up your dancing ones. With Pluto and the Sun in your houses of passion and glamour you’re going to need a pair – or two. Don’t bother packing many PJs as you’ll be out most nights anyway. If that sounds like less soul-searching than you are used to on vacation, then now is one of those times to think less and do more. Hit the big city. Kiss your honey in front of the world.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Comfort food for the soul is what’s on the menu for you this month. Reconnect with family and friends during a staycation or visit them and stay in a quaint B&B nearby. Be careful though. Just because you’re with old friends doesn’t mean you get to act like you were when you met them. Keep the teen-age behaviour where it belongs – in the past.
Source: Tripbase ®
Cancer (21 June - 22 July)
Take a trip back in time, to the days before you were supposed to be anyone’s role model, life-partner or trusted employee, back to when you were responsible only to yourself. Bring along your best pals from back-in-the-day and head somewhere that defines cool on your terms. Museum hop, bar hop, shop ‘til you drop, just don’t stand still and don’t pay too much attention to your inner adult – unless its telling you to turn off the car lights.
Leo (23 July - 22 August)
Take a little advice from philosopher poet Henry David Thoreau, and “simplify, simplify, simplify.” In other words: Close your wallet, hide your credit card and don’t leave room in your suitcase for all the gee-gaws you plan to buy. Pack just enough to carry on your back when you hit the hiking trail. Stop occasionally to appreciate nature and try talking to your friends and family about something other than money and the household to-do list. You just might remember that you really like these people after all and the best things in life really are free – or close anyway.
Libra (23 September - 22 October)
That lingering headache you can’t seem to shake just might be your batteries going kaput. Pick a place to recharge, reinvigorate and get healthy – body and soul. Some people can do that in a tent in the middle of the woods. You aren’t one of them. There’s no law that says you can’t seek solace for your soul in high-thread count sheets with an organic mini-bar.
Scorpio (23 October - 21 November)
Your sparkling conversation and your sympathetic ear will be the reason everyone seems to circle around you these days. The more the merrier this month so grab a group of friends or a group of strangers – who are really just friends waiting to happen and go go go. Don’t be afraid of long road trips or plane rides. Send a little of your light out into the ether via Facebook and Twitter and such. This is one of those rare times everyone really does want to see your slides, so you might as well take advantage of it.
Sagittarius (22 November - 21 December)
Take charge this month and plan a vacation that meets your needs, not everyone else’s. That doesn’t mean dragging the kids to educational sites they could care less about or taking dad on a shopping tour. But it also most emphatically doesn’t mean giving up on what you want, even if you have to do it alone. Fortunately, there’s probably a middle ground – like an outdoor adventure that ends with a good long soak in a hot tub.
Capricorn (22 December - 19 January)
Start brushing up on whatever language you were supposed to learn in high school. Now’s the time to get way, way out of town, like across an ocean or two. Phrases you’ll want to learn will include “where’s the fun around here?” and “let’s get moving”. You also may want to practice saying goodbye to a significant other who wants to come along and rein you in. Promise to come back bearing fabulous and unusual gifts and it will make the parting go a little smoother.

SAFETY
The Best
Safety Tool Over the years, technology advancements have led the aviation industry to develop a number of safety devices like the weather radar and the traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) to improve safety. Other devices like the information displays in the cockpit have been improved, while more advanced tools for air traffic control and some other devices have contributed to enhance safety in the aviation industry, especially in the commercial operation. Till this second, human beings remain the last line of defense in aviation security. No matter how high the level of technology used in commercial aviation, how sophisticated are the automation devices and equipment or how many state-of-the-art computers are installed onboard, the human beings are still the greatest safety device on board. Computers are able to process large amount of data to be presented for multiple purposes onboard an aircraft. But computers can’t feel or think. The decisions shall be made by humans using the data from the computer. Because of that, we train our crews on decision making process as part of the training programme for pilots and flight attendants. The human factor training equips our crews with resources to conduct proper checks, team work techniques, identification of problems and human behaviour, as well as decision making among others. We also perform regular medical checks on all of our crews to ensure that they meet the required level of health to perform their daily duties onboard. 42 | MALINDOMAG
We at Malindo Air are committed to provide our people with the best training possible. Human factor training is an important part of the training provided to our pilots, flight
attendants and technicians. We truly believe that human beings are the most important safety device in the aviation industry. Sit back, relax and have a safe and enjoyable flight!

IN-FLIGHT WIFI & MOBILE
GET CONNECTED! Malindo Air defines being connected whenever you need, wherever you are
In today’s digital world, there’s a growing demand for people to be connected at all times. In a recent survey commissioned by leading inflight connectivity provider, AeroMobile, almost one in five (17%) people admit to spending more than three hours on their phones each day and 16% admitted they are never without their phones. Mobile phones are a key part of everyday life – from sending text messages, checking emails and making calls to playing games, surfing the net and keeping updated with what’s going on. Phones are so crucial in our lives because people want to stay connected even when abroad. Holidaymakers have the need to text family members, send important emails, read the news or simply make their friends and family jealous by sending them some stunning beach pictures via WhatsApp. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this need to be connected at all times doesn’t stop when we go on a vacation. AeroMobile’s survey revealed that 78% of tourists use their phone abroad with SMS being the most popular service used on a daily basis. The survey also found that more than one in ten (11%) British workers send work emails every day on holiday and one in five (19%) check work emails at least once a week during their getaway. Today, the ability to stay connected has expanded 30,000 feet above. Many may not realise that they can use their phones 46 | MALINDOMAG
inflight, but passengers onboard an AeroMobile connected aircraft can use their phone to call, text, WhatsApp, email or even tweet just as they would on the ground. Taking Flight Since its launch in 2008, the popularity of inflight connectivity has soared. Over 28 million passengers have successfully connected to AeroMobile’s inflight connectivity service ever since. • Passengers have sent or received over 43 million SMS inflight • That’s the equivalent of one SMS every five seconds • Connectivity has rolled-out on an aircraft, on average, every eight days
Did you know? • On 3 April 1973, the ever first
mobile phone call was made by Martin Cooper. And 35 years later technology had taken huge leaps forward – March 2008 saw the first ever phone call made onboard a commercial flight.
• On average, flights to Las
Vegas have the highest number of users and the most usage of inflight connectivity. Passengers from UK Operators send the most SMS and use the most data and passengers from Middle Eastern Operators make the most calls.
IN-FLIGHT WIFI & MOBILE
Is it safe? Passengers are often asked to turn off their mobiles during take-off and landing or switch their phones to the ‘Airplane Mode’ to cut off wireless communications. So it might surprise you to learn that you can use your mobile phone inflight, on a connected aircraft. The first question that might go through your head is: Is it safe? Well worry not, as AeroMobile’s inflight network allows for the safe use of mobile devices onboard. So, how does it work? Simply put, the network uses satellite communications. Small base stations, called pico cells which receive signals from satellites when a passenger uses their phone are installed inside the aircraft cabin. This is necessary because, at 30,000 feet, a passenger’s mobile phone would be out of the range of ground networks. The passenger can switch on his or her phone when the aircraft reaches cruising altitude and can then use it for voice, texting and data inflight just as they would use their phone on the ground. Satellite technology has developed significantly over the past few years and enables higher bandwidths and more services to the aircraft. Obviously, the development of the AeroMobile system has required much testing and work to ensure a safe, good quality service. Safety is, of course, of the highest priority. The AeroMobile system has been thoroughly tested and is approved for use by aviation authorities around the world, including the EASA and FAA. So now people can stay connected whereever they are, even at 30,000 feet above. Before long, we expect inflight connectivity to be the norm for passengers on all flights.
• •
Connected aircraft have travelled over 407,469,000 miles That’s enough to fly to the sun and back twice, or even to Jupiter!
Connecting On the Go AeroMobile is the inflight connectivity provider that allows passengers to use their own mobile devices onboard a connected aircraft. Passengers may use a variety of handsets and operating systems to connect to the service – some passengers could even use their iWatch inflight. The top three mobile phone manufacturers using the AeroMobile network in 2015 are
Apple (50%), Blackberry (15%) and Samsung (10%). It’s also interesting to see the breakdown of usage by different handsets: In 2015, Apple users consumed 52% of all data on the network; for Blackberry users this was 11% of data; Samsung users consumed 12% of all data. In the first six months of 2015, data usage soared 157% compared to the same period the previous year. With new apps and mobile services being increasingly recognised as the quickest and most convenient way to communicate with passengers in the lead up to their holiday, and even at the airport, this trend is certainly set to continue. IN SAFE
HANDS Aviation Security Manager, Hasmadi bin Mohamad explains how he and his team ensure a safe and smooth flight for all passengers on Malindo Air.
Developing and modifying the Malindo Air Security Programme to correct deficiencies as necessary, ensuring the Malindo Air’s Security Programme is current, as well as to ensure continuing effectiveness of Malindo Air Security Programme through regular evaluations and inspections and the application of an internal security audit programme are just part of Hasmadi bin Mohamad’s long list of responsibilities as the Aviation Security Manager of Malindo Air. But his passion for his job keeps him on the go despite the hard work. And after speaking to him, we understand exactly why. What is Aviation Security? Aviation Security refers to the procedures designed and implemented to avoid security problems onboard the aircraft. Hence, ground security is a necessity. One of our roles is to 50 | MALINDOMAG
prevent the carriage of explosives, incendiary devices, firearms or weapons by anyone onto an aircraft. In addition, we also deter un-authorised access and ensure adequate measures are made available to handle threats to aircraft, offices, buildings, properties and assets owned or operated by Malindo Air. Why is Aviation Security important? Aviation Security is fully responsible on any security matters related to the company, aircraft, passengers and staffs. We identify and advise the management on matters of security risks to passengers, staff, the public and airline resources such as properties and financial assets. Besides that, we also implement policies, procedures and systems to ensure that such risks and threats are minimised to an acceptable and
cost efficient manner. The priority lies in the case of sabotage or hijacking. Aviation Security always gives full cooperation and support to other departments at all times when it comes to security matters. We also have good support and cooperation from the airport authority team. What are Malindo Air’s efforts in ensuring Aviation Security is at its best? The company gives full support to our team and provides all the necessities such as training and other courses relevant to an Aviation Security officer. We have various units including Investigation Officer, Profiling Officer, Task Force, Internal Auditor and Operations Team to ensure Malindo Air is covered in every angle of security matters. Could you tell us what is your role
IN-FLIGHT HIGH FLYER
as Head of Aviation Security? As the Aviation Security Manager of Malindo Air, my role is to ensure the security of daily operations of Malindo Air services, staff and properties while developing and promulgating a company-wide security standards and practices. Credibility is very important in my line of work as I am in charge of reporting all actual or suspected acts of unlawful interference with aircraft operations to the appropriate authority. Besides that, I am also responsible for conducting an initial and comprehensive survey of Malindo Air facilities, equipment and activities in order to determine security needs and assess likely threats and the list of tasks continues.
Immigration, Malaysia Quarantine Inspections Service (MAQIS), National Security Bureau and a few others that are related to security in Malaysia.
What is your daily work routine? As Malindo Air is growing fast and have lots of daily aircraft movement, I will visit and monitor the staffs at the airport to ensure that they’re doing their tasks according to the Standard Operating Procedure (S.O.P) to ensure our flights depart safely and satisfying passengers with the services provided from the checkin counter until they board the aircraft. This area will be monitor closely to ensure our staff is alert in security matters and make sure the aircraft is a safe transportation for the public.
What is your most memorable experience throughout your service at Malindo Air? In 2012, my team and I worked hard towards our goal to obtain the Air Operator Certification (AOC) for Malindo Air. We spent most of our time and efforts in fulfilling the biggest dream. Although there are many obstacles throughout the journey, we managed to get through it together. And I look forward to the company growing bigger in the future.
What do you like about your job? I like challenges and Aviation Security has many different situations to handle and solve. Some situations involve the staffs while others involve the passengers, and the situation will be solved through a discussion or we are required to make a forced decision. Furthermore, some cases or situations require soft skills, and upon solving it, I improve on my technical skills. Aviation Security relates to many authorities in Malaysia, such as Aviation Security of the Department Civil Aviation Malaysia (DCAM), Chief Government Security Office of the Prime Minister Department, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Custom,
Have you ever faced any dangerous situation on the job? We are lucky to be in Malaysia because the chances of having serious or critical situations with regards to aviation security are low compared to other countries in the world. All airports in Malaysia have an efficient security system to ensure that unlawful interference or risk item could not be brought in by passengers or smuggler. All the security system in the airport is provided by Malaysia Airport Berhad and operated by the Aviation Security team.
How does one apply to join your team? Anyone who has good skills
in handling people in times of crisis, has positive thinking and is mentally prepared to be professional at all times could join my team as an Aviation Security officer. They must be strong physically and mentally as well, in order to face any unlawful interference. Do you have any tips for passengers to help them pass through security quickly? My advice to all passengers, especially if you’re travelling on an international route, is to not bring any risk item, like a knife or any sharp item in your hand carry luggage. International flight passengers are also not allowed to bring mineral water. These are among the few things that passengers will have to take note of, but a full list of regulated items is displayed at the check-in counter for your reference. Dangerous goods are not allowed on Malindo Air and security officers are very strict when checking passengers at the departure checkpoint and cooperation from passengers is highly appreciated. The security officers will not compromise when it comes to security issues at the airport in order to ensure the safety of the departing flight. Finally, make sure you check your flight time and dates, and arrive at the airport on time on the day of departure.
