Early Mid-Year Plans! As we crawl into the beginning of second quarter, some of us will be adapting comfortably into our daily routines, especially those whom began the year with a new chapter. For some others, this is the time to reflect back on the achievements of first quarter, in efforts of planning measures to reach greater milestones, be it for business or personal aspects. For me, the combination of both is perfect in creating magical moments. The first quarter has been significantly amazing across the board for Malindo Air. We launched several new regional routes, products and services that have certainly made us reach new heights in the global arena. In this second quarter we are expecting gradual arrival of another two Boeing 737-800 to complement our regional network expansion. The fleet expansion certainly will provide more job opportunities within the flight operations department, particularly qualified pilots and flight attendants. I am immensely proud of the line-up and grateful to my team for enabling Malindo to do justice through our products and touching lives by keeping people connected across the globe. As we move on with our hectic schedule, let us not forget our very own priorities and of course that being some well-deserved quality

time with loved ones as well. That brings us to the highlight of this month’s issue on attractive and potential holiday spots within Malindo Air’s destinations. With the series of breaks which include the International schools’ Easter Holidays this month and Malaysian mid-term school holidays next month, now is the best time to plan not only an exciting vacation for your kids but a mid year escapade for yourself too. Near or afar, a short or long getaway, you are sure to have a memorable trip when you begin your journey with us. Surprise your loved ones through adventures in the state-of-the-art theme parks in Malaysia and Hong Kong, or a more historical trip in Ho Chi Minh city, or across the continent to the enchanting city of Perth. With the global joint-promotions of Visit Malaysia that Malindo is undertaking with Tourism Malaysia, the new service is believed to have much to offer and boost both the business and leisure travellers from Pakistan to Malaysia. Malaysians and transiting passengers from other Malindo Air destinations such as Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand or China can now look forward to a seamless connectivity to Lahore via Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This will also contribute to our objective of hyping up KLIA as an important transit and tourism hub in the region. On another good note, passengers can now forget the hassle of paying a hefty penalty for flight change. Malindo Air’s new No Change Fee policy allows unlimited date and time change up to 24 hours before departure at no extra charge. This privilege is a first of its kind in Malaysia. CAREER IN AVIATION

Making It

HAPPEN Thibagar Doraisamy, 37, shares his 13 year journey in the aviation industry

14 | MALINDOMAG

Before the current role, Thibagar began his journey as a mechanic in another airline for eight and a half years. Later on, he gradually progressed to be a technician, lead engineer, maintenance operations’ controller, a maintenance manager and finally the General Manager of aircraft operations in Malindo Air. With 13 years of experience, Thibagar has managed various types of aircraft and is considered an expertise in his line of work with ample of practice and experiences. Q : What exactly do you do? Being the General Manager of aircraft operations, I am responsible to manage several core departments which are classified as front liners of the engineering division. These include aircraft maintenance, materials and logistics, Ground Service Equipment (GSE), aircraft interior services and also the maintenance support shop that we are currently developing. I handle both fleets of Boeing 737s as well as the ATR aircraft.

CAREER IN AVIATION

Q : What sort of training and qualification did you have to be an aircraft engineer? Aircraft engineering is considered as a professional course whereby the main requirement is to obtain a license. When I completed high school, I went to United Kingdom for two and half years to attend the City of Bristol College to complete a Civil Aviation Authority course. It is module based, whereby you complete all modules and attend oral lessons on civil aviation. Upon passing you will be given a CAA BCAR Airframe & Engine License. I also attended type rating courses on specific aircraft types that included related examinations. Q : How did u become an aircraft maintenance engineer? While I was a doing a part time customer service job, I was surrounded in an environment whereby pilots and inspiring men in uniforms got me excited and gave me the motivation to work in an airport. During my time there were not many options and aircraft engineering course seemed possible, so with the support of my parents, I took up a study loan to pursue, my dreams.

Q : What advice do you have for aspiring aircraft engineers? The airline is one industry that can push you to the limits especially in this scope, as it highly involves life safety aspects. You will need to have strong sense of responsibility and perseverance in caring out this role. It is a very interesting yet challenging career path with a steep learning curb. If you have set your mind that this is your ambition, it will be worth all your effort and dedication.

sometimes. But that is exactl y what it means being in a 24 hour service industry and I am lucky to have my loved ones understand that. I always ensure that I full y rejoice every moment that I get with my famil y and when I do that, the absence is replaced with the feeling of presence by them as well. I also make it a point to take couple of days off for famil y getaways especiall y during holiday seasons. I feel that this practice helps balance my famil y relationships as well.

Q : How do you handle work stress at work? The word stress is rather subjective to me. Yes, I do go through challenging times in crucial decision making that arises during intense situations such as a sudden technical default on an aircraft that is due to take off. Essentially I do not have time to give in to emotions, as the mind will be occupied with possible best measures that are to be taken on a rapid pace.

Q : Describe your working environment? My working environment is rather dynamic with a team of enthusiastic people. Communication and personal development is constantl y taking place. It is very exciting for me and it gets more exciting with the growth of the company. Each team member is equall y a significant player, immaterial of our respective positions.

Q : How do you balance quality time between your famil y and your heavy workload? I feel quality ‘living’ will be a more suitable word because it is not subject to time. There is always tendency of being busy with work and it continues even throughout the weekend MALINDOMAG | 15

IN-FLIGHT TRAVEL INSURANCE

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME... Travelling can be an expensive proposition. After budgeting for flights, hotels and money for shopping, purchasing travel insurance can seem like the lowest priority. After all, “It will never happen to me, right?” It can be tempting to take the chance and hope to get away with it to try to save some money. But if a problem does arise, the costs can be crippling. Hospitalisation costs in Southeast Asia can easily exceed US$800 per day. Even nearby destinations can prove anything but the Australian government warns travellers that some medical evacuations from Bali can exceed AUD$60,000. If a trip needs to be cancelled, this can mean thousands in lost deposits. Even if you are fit and healthy and unlikely to get sick, travel insurance covers more than just medical bills. Many things can go wrong 20 | MALINDOMAG

on a trip; flights can be delayed, baggage lost, credit cards stolen. An emergency might mean you have to return early or even not travel at all. Most travel insurance policies protect you against these unforeseen circumstances. Yes, but doesn’t my credit card take care of all of that? Many credit cards include some form of “free” travel insurance, but it is important to remember that the policy only applies if you pay for the trip using the card, and that the benefits are few and far between, so you should check carefully what the “free” travel insurance covers. Know your insurance plan Remember that when you buy a travel insurance there are different plans available to suit most budgets, so it is important to take the time to look at the benefits offered, to find the one that is right for you. You should pay special attention to:

• •

The types of benefits The coverage for medical expense • The coverage for personal accident • The coverage for trip cancellation and curtailment Lastly, remember that travel insurance can help you when you travel close to home, not just for long distance. You may have existing health cover, but it is likely that this may not cover you when you travel overseas. Some policies do not even cover you in different parts within the country and additional travel insurance protects against cancellations and other mishaps. You would not travel without packing your passport. Having proper travel insurance should be viewed as an essential too. Deciding on a destination for a short getaway has always been a challenge. My wife obviously loves the ambience of a city and shopping while I am the type that prefers venturing beyond the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan atmosphere to connect with nature. It is probably the reason why we love Perth so much, a destination that offers the best of both worlds. Strategically located within the same time zone as Malaysia and accessible through a convenient five and a half hours flight, Perth has grown to become our favourite destination beyond the borders of South East Asia. It is near enough to home yet it gives the feeling of being in a modern western country. Back in Perth once again, this time we found ourselves enjoying a scenic drive from Perth Airport to up north of the city. The great part about self-drive holiday is the ability to go with the flow, adjusting the itinerary along the way. It is how we ended up in the small town of Lancelin on the first night.

Lancelin is famous for one thing its huge sand dunes where visitors get to experience sand boarding on massive 45 degree angle dunes. Spend the night in Lancelin and wake up early to enjoy sunrise over the sand dunes before the daytrip crowd arrives from the city. Sand boards are available for rent at most petrol stations within the town. From the sand dunes of Lancelin, a further 60 minutes’ drive up north will get you to Nambung National Park which is famous for none other than The Pinnacles. This is a sight that is common on many tourist brochures promoting Perth. Thousands of huge limestone pillars rise from the shifting yellow sands of the Pinnacles Desert over a process that takes thousands of years. We overheard conversations among visitors on how the pillars resemble a landscape from a science fiction movie. These “rock stars are definitely worth a visit and I would recommend visiting it around sunset time as the natural

lighting will make the view even more spectacular. While it is possible to do a daytrip to The Pinnacles, I would recommend spending a night in one of the few laidback accommodations in Cervantes which is another small town about 20km away from The Pinnacles. Cervantes is also known for some of the oldest living fossils on Earth – the stromatolites and strombalites of Lake Thetis. Samples from these living organisms indicate similarities with fossils from up to billion years ago. Located within the area of Lake Thesis in Cervantes is Hansen Bay Lookout Point which offers panoramic view of Cervantes, Lake Thetis and the beautiful ocean. No road trip to Cervantes is complete until you get to enjoy fresh lobsters at the famous

enjoyed a round of Fish & Chips in Fremantle, bargained at Fremantle Market and did some shopping at the affordable Harbour Town Brand Direct outlet. Overall it was four days of nature, adventure, good food, great value shopping and a good company. Perth has indeed lived up to its reputation of having something for everyone. In our case, the best of both modern attractions and wonders of nature. Perth has so much more to offer and we are already planning for our next long-weekend weekend getaway downunder.

Lobster Shack restaurant which offers not only delicious lobster meals but also an educational tour on the processing of Western Rock Lobster. Having enjoyed our 2 days in Lancelin and Cervantes, we head our way back to Perth City. The 250km drive was fun thanks to various scenic stops along the way. A combination of lookout points, restaurants and wild flowers by the roadside made it interesting. A selfie with a kangaroo in the background seems to be the trend for any holiday goers to Australia 26 | MALINDOMAG

so we just had to do one more stop before reaching the city. Just outside Perth city, Yanchep National Park is a nice place for families and tourists to enjoy a quiet and peaceful day. Koalas and Kangaroos can be seen roaming at different sections of the park. We even managed to check out an interesting natural underground cave located within Yanchep National Park which we experienced an underground wonderland full of natural cave elements such as stalagmites, helictites, columns and shawls. Back in the city, Perth has a lot to offer for those who are keen for a more relaxing holiday or simply do not have enough time. Over a period of two days in the City, we had the chance to visit the famous Kings Park & Botanic Garden,

SCUBA DIVING

- BALI Text by : Hj. Syed Abd Rahman Images by: Kids scuba

For any scuba divers in the Asian region, Bali is a well-known dive destination for novice and advanced divers as it offers a variety of both kind of scuba diving experience. The island of Bali lies at the southwest tip of the Coral Triangle, an area generally considered to own one of the richest marine environments in the world. Covering six countries in total, the Coral Triangle stretches from the Philippines in the north, to the Malaysian state of Sabah in the west and the Solomon Islands to the east, with Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea in between. The area’s marine biodiversity and ecology is simply stunning and is characterized by more than 600 species of soft and hard coral and 3000 species of reef fish. To put those numbers into perspective as comparison, the Red Sea has around 200 coral species and 1000 fish species and the Caribbean 50 and 900 respectively.

The island of Bali plays a ma jor role with the Indonesian ocean current through-flow. The phenomenal flow of water has a tremendous effect that special measurements had to be created for it with such an integral part of the Coral Triangle’s incredible bio-diversity. The Lombok Strait, between the islands of Bali and Lombok, is one of three ma jor channels that the through-flow exits the Indonesian archipelago from what pours south into the Indian Ocean.

It is estimated that around 20% of the through-flow of current passes through the Lombok Strait providing the reefs on the east and northeast coastlines of Bali. Wherein, those on the nearby islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in the middle of the Lombok Strait, has a constant flow of water extremely rich in organic nutrients, planktonic eggs and larvae. This would invite pelagic to come and feed to the area such as Manta Rays, Sunfish (aka Mola Mola), whales and many species sharks. All of these factors combine to make for some great diving in Bali and diving there can be separated into five distinct areas – the northwest region, the north coast, the northeast coast and the east coast, which includes Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.

yed Restaurant has a long and glorious history that spans four prosperous generations. Conceived in the early 1900s by the noble Mr. Syed Kadir, a trustworthy migrant from India, it has since grown to become a household name, cherished and respected all over Malaysia. The first ever Syed restaurant opened for business in Penang, the foodhaven of Malaysia, where it thrived and prospered for three generations. The third generation of Syed’s then took the bold initiative of venturing out

and setting up shop in Kuala Lumpur, the cosmopolitan capital of Malaysia. The year 1968 marked the birth of Kuala Lumpur’s first Syed Restaurant, in the bustling commercial hub of Klang Valley. There was no stopping the explosive growth of Syed restaurants thereafter with the openings of numerous other outlets within Klang Valley and soon after an international outlet in the prime area of Hong Kong. Vietnam boasts three designer courses on tap and a fourth one situated in the nearby highlands is coming soon. This invariably places Danang as a “bucket list” destination for many golfers in the region as well as around the world. Upon stepping into Da Nang Golf Club (designed by Greg Norman) you cannot help but take into consideration the visceral quote from their website and the Great White Shark himself, Greg Norman, “... you’d be doing a very poor job to make a boring course out of a site like this...” The synergistic effect of terrific coastal terrain combined with the magical touch of a world-class course designer is wonderfully evident as you work through each hole.

Fresh off the plane and into the literal heat of the moment, most will struggle off the first tee and then struggle some more on the greens that were literally made of glass. According to the course records, the stimpmeter was running at a breakneck 13.5. Luckily for some of us, the second green was all it took to nudge the ball hole high. As it was just past the height of the super hot summer season, there was quite a bit of brown through the fairways and tee shots would ricochet past the 300 yard mark leaving all of us with uncomfortable half and three quarter wedges into the glass surfaces of their greens. Their bunkers also presented an individual challenge by itself, as most of the sand dredged from

CONNECT GOLF

the coastal areas was super fine, heavy, and terribly punitive. About an hour and a half’s distance from Da Nang proper, the Laguna Lang Co Golf Resort (designed by Sir Nick Faldo) is a MUST play for all who land here. Nestled in a valley near Hué, which is a quaint fishing town, the monolithic clubhouse stands out in stark contrast to the traditional homes that line the perimeter of the property. Right off the bat, incredible visual elements of almost every tee box where bunkers and greens meld into each other create a patchwork of seeming i m p o s s i b i l i t y. The role of your caddy and/or your GPS (Global Positioning System) is of utmost importance here, as every ball seems to have the distinct possibility of ending up in a sea of sand. As in most of his work, Sir Nick Faldo’s course is quite akin to a desert paradise, carved out of the natural environment with bunkers and natural wasteland areas littered generously throughout the tract. Faldo’s gem played the most difficult of the three with the

ambient heat contributing to a lot of slipped grips and parched curses. Not the greatest time of the year to play but be forewarned; when it is cooler in the early months of the year, strong monsoon winds threaten off the endless coast of Vietnam, making this track bare its teeth even more! Of the three, the Montgomerie Links Vietnam (designed by Colin Montgomerie) is probably the one that had the manicurist visit the most. Almost perfect right angles on tee box demarcations, springy

even fairways, smooth running greens culminated into creating that “close to golf heaven” feeling. The trees and foliage on this course are a little more mature than its other two sisters and that provides some respite from the relentless sun. Fear not however, although the trees are larger, they are spaced well apart allowing for some miraculous saves from deep within the woods. A superb course to end your three-round buffet – Colin’s course offers a great variety of risk and reward holes. Strange thing about this course was the US$5.00 that had to be charged per person if you elected to bring your own choice of beverage into the course – think of it as a “golf corkage charge!” Ultimately, DaNang is a must – the golf is great, seafood abundant and inexpensive, plenty of touristic spots for those inclined, and the city has great entertainment and sights centred along the main river. Their coffee with condensed milk is to die for and for some strange reason their beef noodles are the best in the land. The best time to head to this destination would be in February (peak period) and also the cool months of March-April. AVOID the summer months from June to August. MALINDOMAG | 35

I’m writing this testimonial in appreciation for Malindo Air. On April 27th this year, I was traveling using Malindo flight OD1409 from Langkawi to Kuala Lumpur. Together with me, there were 15 children with hearing-impaired problem (deaf) and speech problem and another 18 people of teachers, parents and guardians.

As usual, when you travel in the large group of people with kids, we could literally anticipate some issues that will arise. Plus, when you travel with 15 special kids, it won’t be that easy. This caused a delay of flight on that day due to some miscommunication and arrangement for parents and kids.

However, I was immediately impressed with Malindo Air captain and crew. They accommodated us with high professionalism and knew that they were flying with special kids. The lead stewardess, Intan, assisted us in smile even though we had delayed the flight. The captain was absolutely fabulous and patient to wait for us to board the flight. Everything went smoothly and the children had their moment they won’t forget for life. Thank you, Malindo Air from a father with a son who has special needs too. Also, on behalf of my six-year-old boy and all of his friends, they had fun seeing the clouds from above and enjoyed the ride throughout. K. Rahim (Malaysia)

I appreciate it very much and thank you for the great job done!!! Keep up the good work!! Janyce (Malaysia)

Overall, the airline is great compared to other competitors. Check in was smooth; new fleet. They gave priority to travelers with small children, First in KLIA2, but not on our return flight in Penang airport though. It was quite a satisfying, and excellent in-flight service. Only setback was they gave us a different seat upon check-in. Fortunately, it was on the first row of economy class, hence more leg room. Ezril (Malaysia)

I went back in straight to Malindo sales office for assistance. The staff were so helpful that they called the staff who was on duty on our arrival to search for my phone and he found it and returned to me.

Flight OD 1601 KCH to KL. The captain has great sense of humor and just cheer me up n really have wonderful voice too. Yes, I’m glad I chose such a hospitable airline. Thank you for the warmth and hospitality on board. Wan Li (Malaysia)

I was on flight OD1601 from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur this morning. I didn’t remember taking out my phone until I was about to leave KLIA2 when I wanted to turn off the airplane mode but couldn’t find it. I think it slipped in between the seats.

Dear Malindo Air, I’m writing to thank the ground staffs for their professionalism and assistance that they have provided me this morning.

Check-in from KUL to DAC was a breeze. The Boeing 737-900 ER aircraft was extraordinary with very attentive and hospitable cabin crew. You can buy a hot meal just for a few ringgit. Overall, I had a good impression of this airline. A Mowla (Bangladesh)

“We wish to thank all our passengers for the generous compliments and feedback. If you would like to share your feedback with us, kindly email it to info@malindoair.com. Once again, thank you for your continuous support towards Malindo Air.” 46 / MALINDOMAG
