As we make the transition into the second quarter of 2017, we are officially four years into operations, with the progression of Malindo Air as a full service carrier. Many event has taken place at a rapid pace in terms of expansion and today we are not only a global brand, but also a choice brand by local as well as international travellers from all walks of life. For this, I cannot be more proud of the journey it took to not only achieve, but exceed the expectations that my team and I set to reach. Back in 2013, we started out with two aircraft and flew to three local destinations, however today, Malindo Air has been elevated to a full service carrier, that comprise a fleet of 43, that serves 46 regional and international destinations! Our mission was to provide the best service possible to our customers - you. Without you, and your continuous loyalty, we would not have made it thus far; for this I thank every one of you for making us your choice of travel. While we have made exemplary progress, it does not just stop there. We only wish to continuously enhance our initiatives for you in terms of service, efficiency and affordability. Having said that, it gives me great pleasure to state that Malindo Air will be the first carrier in the world to operate the latest fleet under the Boeing arm, the effective B737 Max, allowing us to offer more competitive fares. More news on this is highlighted in our Insider segment. Subsequently, I am pleased to highlight three astounding destinations that we have recently introduced. The first is our daily flights to Brisbane, Australia! It is our second
route Down Under, after Perth, and we are certainly very thrilled about this significant milestone. Brisbane is known to be the third most popular metropolitan area in the continent of Australia and definitely the city to head to if you have an appreciation for culture, adventure and nature. Our second new destination, with the commencement of four times weekly flights, is Yangon, Myanmar. Herein, it is not only an important commercial centre, but serves as a pilgrimage avenue for Buddhists with its awe-inspiring temples that adorn the modern landscape. And finally it is, Chittagong, Bangladesh with the frequency of three flights weekly. The city of Chittagong is a destination for both, business and leisure. Being the second biggest city in the nation, it is also the financial hub of southeastern Bangladesh and ma jor coastal seaport city. For more information, on any of these phenomenal destinations, do flip on to the Cover story and Voyage sections of our magazine. In view of market demand, the network has also widened as we double the flight frequency to Denpasar, Bali. If this ever-popular holiday destination, has been on your wish-list for quite a bit now, this is the perfect coincidence. Speaking from personal experience, an avid traveller myself, Bali’s charm lets you have the perfect escape that you crave for. Till next month, wishing you the very best for the month of April, and thank you, again, for your loyal patronage. Chandran Rama Muthy CEO, Malindo Air

The modern metropolis is the hub of Queensland culture, offering a peek at the past and a glimpse into the future. The city boasts sophisticated city galleries and rooftop bars, deserted subtropical beaches and some cool-climate vineyards. Lapping at the city's eastern fringe is Moreton Bay, home to low-lying sandy isles that beckon with their turquoise waves, beautiful forests and passing parade of whales, turtles and dolphins. Head west from Brisbane and you will hit lofty Toowoomba, an underrated university town where heritage architecture and wellpruned gardens share the streets with amazing street art, specialist coffee shops and a growing number of fashionable eateries and bars. Climate get colder further south in the vineyard-laced Granite Belt, a corner of the state where there
are distilleries and orchards and the occasional mid-year snowman. Although the city is famous for its clear blue skies and year-round sunshine in most places, Brisbane has reinvented itself in recent years with funky street life that have been added to the traditional drawcards of sport and the great outdoors. There are also the attractions of Brisbane’s rural and coastal hinterland to look forward to. Downtown Brisbane is a mix of gracious old buildings, sleek skyscrapers and grassy parks. Browse the heritage arcades and 500-plus stores on Queen Street Mall, the city’s shopping hub. Also do check out the elegant former Treasury Building, learn about the city’s history at Brisbane City Hall and get a bird’s eye view from the Museum of Brisbane tower. If you fancy a taste of local cuisine, then head to Eagle Street and Southbank for fine dining. Alternatively, head to Fortitude
Valley or the rejuvenated West End. Once a rather dodgy inner city area, West End has blossomed into a vibrant hub for entertainment and dining. Make sure you visit the local night markets, including the biggest of them all at Newfarm. When you are ready to venture further afield, the Greater Brisbane region lays on a rich array of options. Drive 30 minutes north of the city and you are in the mountains of Moreton Bay Region, with its dense forests, boutique wineries and the world’s third largest sand island. Alternatively head south for an hour and discover the spectacular Scenic Rim, packed with luxury lodges and panoramic landscapes. If you are in the mood for a beach holiday, a 30-minute drive to the Redland coast will bring you to pretty bayside village and the chance to experiance whale watching, snorkelling or even hiking.

atuk Chef Ismail Ahmad, Malaysia’s Food Ambassador and celebrity Chef, is famous for his preparation of local heritage dishes and his expertise in preparing international cuisines. As a young boy, Chef Ismail spent most of his childhood helping his grandmother and later his mother in the kitchen, learning recipes and traditional Malaystyled culinary methods, skills that have proudly helped build his successful career in Malaysia. Hailing from a quaint village in Negeri Sembilan, the 57-year-old Chef opened his own restaurant called Rebung known for its signature Malay dishes. Creating scrumptious dishes that whet one’s appetite is Chef Ismail’s enthusiasm and passion. He treasures the traditional culinary recipes and has decided to leave his hometown to polish up his interest. Besides being a restauranteur, he also hosts television cooking shows and tours other countries as Malaysian food ambassador. Rebung’s 50-odd item buffet spread, pegged between RM40-50 has earned him the fame for its Malay dishes that are hard to come by. Since his restaurant opened in 2004, Chef Ismail has gained a reputation as one of the country’s top chefs. The Hotel Management and Catering graduate from Mara University of Technology, Malaysia has over 30
years of experience in the industry and has appeared on television shows like Aroma, Sri Murni, Hey Good Cooking, Wok and Roll and Ala-Ala Kampung, among others. “I wanted to be a chef from the time I was 10 years old. The kitchen was always the happiest place in my house. It was a hive of activity. My grandmother and all my relatives would congregate in the kitchen and it was always so much fun. I was naturally drawn to it,” said the Chef during a recent interview with MalindoMag. “Everyone was happy and everything was so colourful and smelt and tasted good. It was also a place where the community would come together. That is when I knew I had to open my own place to create the same feeling of happiness and that is cooking and having a good meal. “Rebung is not just a restaurant, it is a place where families, friends and relatives come together. We have many groups who come here. We have the reunion group, we have the kutu group where a group of friends meet up at Rebung to collect monthly money, family group and many more. “Besides cooking and feeding people, I love to travel. Zia Memorial Muzuem The Zia Memorial Museum is more than just a journey through the life of the late President Rahman, it is also a significant architectural piece of history. The building that now houses the Zia Memorial Museum was previously known as the Old Circuit House. It was constructed on a hill in the city of Chittagong in the year 1913, and is a wonderful building that boasts unique South East Asian features. It is one of the famous landmarks in Chittagong and a popular tourist attraction for its impressive architecture consisting of multiple domes and minarets painted in bright colors. Com swear upon it, for it hones your riding skills, not necessarily for racing only, but for everyday riding as well. But you do not have to be seasoned motorcyclist to have some fun on the dirt. Most Fun Gym or MFG offers you all the thrills and some occasional spills of off-road riding in a closed and safe environment. Getting started is easy, all you need is some basic riding skills (we
are talking bicycle basics here) and a desire to get dirty. Whilst all the necessary protective gear are provided, riders are required to be dressed in jeans, riding or high cut boots and long sleeved t-shirts. The more advanced riders of course need to be decked up with proper motocross safety gear. For as low as RM300 per session complete with the best coaching by legendary racer and driving/riding instructor Oh Kah Beng, MFG is the perfect place to kick-start your offroad riding experience. There are children as young as 4 years old and seniors as old as 75 that have been part of the learners club at MFG. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous
and off-road riding is often associated with even higher level of risk. Well, at MFG you are not expected to jump table-tops or cross logs on day one. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never ridden a motorcycle or you’ve won multiple racing titles - students need to start from the very basics. Kah Beng’s orders are that you take it easy and enjoy yourself. It is not as scary as it looks. Join the school, sweat it out, learn the essential riding skills and giggle like schoolchildren. MFG is located in Sg. Penchala, Kuala Lumpur it is just ten minutes away from 1Utama or The Curve shopping mall in Mutiara Damansara.

IN-FLIGHT TRAVEL INSURANCE
Do not make these
mistakes International travel can be a lot of fun. It lets you see new places, meet new people and experience new cultures. But that is not to say that holidaying abroad is stress free. We conducted a survey and uncovered the top three travel mishaps. Here is how to beat them.
Travel Mishap 1: Delayed Flights Sadly there is not much you can do to avoid flight delays since the cause tends to be out of your hands. But you can still make the most of an unfortunate situation. First, check the flight status before you set off. If you know it is delayed ahead of time you can spend your time more productively than hanging around at the airport. If you are already at the airport when you learn of the delay, make sure you get the airline representative to explain to you exactly what is happening. You are often entitled to food and accommodation depending on the length of the delay, so make sure you understand your options. If you are planning to make a claim for the delay with your travel insurer, you will probably need a document from the airline confirming the flight number, the length of the delay and the reason. It pays to keep a copy of your travel insurance policy with you or to have the contact number handy so you can check what you will need on the spot.
Travel Mishap 2: Falling Sick Nothing can spoil a holiday quite as easily as falling sick, but there is plenty you can do to avoid it in the first place. Make sure you research your destination before you travel: in less developed countries it is a good idea to only drink bottled
water, for example. Use bottled water for brushing your teeth, and make sure that uncooked food like salad has not been washed with tap water. While prevention is better than the cure, accidents and illness do happen. It is worth checking in advance where the nearest medical facilities are so you know what to do in an emergency. If you are planning on claiming from your insurance, then you should call your insurer as soon as possible after the incident so they can advise you on what to do.
Travel Mishap 3: Lost Baggage Few things in life are worse than the sinking feeling that comes when everyone else has already left the baggage claim area and you realise that your luggage has not made it. First of all, try to keep as many essentials as possible in your hand luggage so you know that you will at least have the basics with you if you lose your check-in luggage.
Restrictions on taking liquids on planes make that trickier these days, but if you have a change of clothes and a toothbrush with you then at least you have most of what you need should the worst happen. If your bags do go missing, your first step is to speak to the airline representative while you are still at the airport. They will give you documentation to prove your claim, and they are also your first point of contact for compensation. Some airlines will also provide a toiletry bag with basic necessities upon request. Next up is to contact your travel insurer to let them know. They will need copies of the documentation from the airline, so make sure you have it handy. If there is a suspicion that your bags have been stolen rather than lost, then you may also need a police report, so it is best to call your insurer before you leave the airport. Keep your policy somewhere safe (in your hand luggage of course!).

Manja As the name symbolises pampering, Manja not only treats the taste bud but spoils their patron with good concoction of drinks and service.
M
anja is all about exploring a wide variety of gastronomical delight from both local and international cuisines. Owner Navin Karu draws his inspiration from his travels across the region, family recipes that have been handed down through the generations and his own favourite food memories. While working on the menu, he also paid special attention to every aspect of Manja, from design, dĂŠcor and ambience. Manja @ Old Malaya is located on Lorong Ra ja Chulan. Built in 1919, Old Malaya is a row of old colonial homes that have been repurposed as restaurants. A lot of care was taken to maintain much of the original architecture and design elements, creating a unique blend of old and new. The restaurant is all about duality, from the old new blend in its architecture, the location between the urban cityscape and the natural landscape, to the medley of flavours on its plates. The whole restaurant is done in varying warm shades of red, with beautiful canvas artwork adorning the walls. In the upstairs bar and dining area is located what has now become a signature of Manja, the Manja lady. This beautiful mural, hand painted on the exposed original brickwork of the building, was co m m i ss i o n e d specificall y for Manja. cannot be pinned down and her expression is open to interpretation. Coming to the delicious offerings of Manja, Panner & Mango salad is a nice dish to welcome the palate. A beautifully balanced salad of spiced, grilled paneer (organic local cottage cheese) and sweet seasonal mango; dressed with extra virgin coconut oil and chestnut honey to tie the flavours together. Light and easy on the palate, it made the perfect start to a wholesome dining experience. Tibetan Pepper Prawns and Tuna Villa Ga jah followed next. Prawns in a spicy, creamy Tibetan peppers dressing was served on a toasted focaccia. One could taste the freshness and a combination of the flavours while the spicy linguine dish, with Indonesian flavours, featuring line caught tuna from Sabah of East Malaysia, done two ways. Shredded marinated tuna is wok tossed with the linguine while beautiful cubes of tuna, are added to the dish for that pop of freshness. Next was Saffron Snapper and Scallop Ravioli. The dish came in encased handmade ravioli, topped with sweet, fresh scallop that has been perfectly seared in a lemon butter. Dorper Lamb Two Ways is a must try for lamb lovers. mash that brings out the natural sweetness of the meat. The tender lamb rack is paired with a crunchy stir fried baby Chinese kale. Lastly for dessert, it was a Malaysian favourite, Old Malaya Tea Time whereby tea time favourites of ‘pisang goreng’ and teh tarik (tea). Gorgeous Rastali banana fritters, which have been folded in with toasted coconut flakes for a delicious crunch. The piping hot fritters are served with a scoop of teh tarik ice cream. Simply delicious even on a full stomach. However, food is also nourishment, and while it is important that the food we eat taste delicious, it should also be equally healthy. To this end, Navin, made a commitment to quality. At Manja, he established what he terms the ‘scratch kitchen’ where 90 percent of the food is made from scratch in the Manja kitchens, including all stocks, broths, sauces, spice blends, breads and ice creams. These items are made in batches daily to ensure optimum freshness and no preservatives, additives or artificial flavourings are used. Navin has also made a commitment to sustainability and an emphasis on local produce. Therefore, all the vegetables are fresh, locally sourced organic produce and seafood. Patrons will be easily attracted to the inspiration behind each dish, the welcoming décor of the interior, the unobtrusive yet attentive service and to the flavours of the meal, hence creating an enjoyable and memorable experience.

PASSION
I
t is time to call it quits when you feel your job is hazardous and that is exactly what Sherina Shavaldin, 34, did when she started putting on the pounds and started experiencing health issues. Her career in a call center was stressful and requires to be seated for more than 10 hours daily. It also led her to be depressed and overworked. She realised after four years, if she kept going, this would be dangerous and will lead to many health complications. She decided to quit her job with no other offers in hand. At first, she just wanted to get healthy and slim down. She started hitting the gym and realised she loves working out and helping people to stay healthy and fit. That is when she realised her passion and
got herself enrolled in becoming a personal trainer in the gym that she goes to work-out. She sat for the exam to be a personal trainer and rest was history as she now trains people of all ages to reach their goal. She helps people with all sort of health problem from those experiencing sports injury to people having health problems. “Exercise routine are different for every individual as everyone comes in with different goals and problems. I have to design a workout routine that suits them best,” says Sherina who works at Fitworx gymnasium in Bukit Jelutong. “It is a lifestyle change in order to stay healthy and fit. Most of my client found it difficult in the beginning but as they continue
into my workout programme, they will not only shed the weight but improve on their health. “It is not just a work-out plan but also what they choose to eat. Everything has to change. “You have to be consistent and very discipline, then the rest will follow suit. Exercise is not just for vanity purpose but for overall health benefits,” added the Trainer. Sherina specialises in cardio kickboxing. That is what she calls it as it is a blend of cardio and kick-boxing. For those who wants to lose weight fast, this work-out is very effective. She also does house sessions as well for groups and individuals besides working in the gym. Her dream is to open her own fitness centre in the future and also train individuals who want to become trainers. When she sees the changes in her client and how they have changed completely, it gives her both satisfaction and happiness. That is why she does not feel like this is her job but more of a passion.
