The 29th SEA Games — Kuala Lumpur The Kuala Lumpur SEA Games 2017, officially known as the 29th Southeast Asian Games is a regional multi-sport event that will take place at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August 2017. It will be the sixth time that Southeast Asian Games is held in Malaysia, after 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989 and 2001. By the time the country hosts the games in 2017, it will be 16 years after Malaysia last hosted the biennial event. The Games will coincide with the celebration of Malaysia’s 60th Independence Day as well as Malaysia Day in September. The theme of the Games is “Rising Together”, signifying the coming of age for Southeast Asia as a community. The region has come a long way in making its mark on the global stage and this is a time for us to come together to write the

next chapter in our collective journey of peace, progress, and prosperity. The logo is based on the famous Malaysian symbol which is the Wau Bulan, a type of moon-kite synonymous with the east coast states of the country. Graceful, beautiful, powerful and rising high above, the Wau establishes itself as something that uniquely represents the transcendent power of sports. To personify and embody the spirit of the Games, there needs to be a mascot which is memorable and eye-catching.

For Kuala Lumpur 2017, our mascot is inspired by the graceful and powerful Malayan Tiger. Rimau is gracious, friendly, competitive and athletic. Most importantly, Rimau is a true athlete.

The Perfect Golf Swing With Our ‘Back Up’! at Ramsay Sime Darby Ara Damansara Medical Centre The average golfer tends to take up golf at an age when he or she is no longer participating in energetic, competitive and physically demanding sports. Unfortunately, this decreased involvement in competitive play contributes to an overall decrease in flexibility – especially of the spine, shoulders, hips and pelvis (key components of a good golf swing). Common everyday activities like working on computers or commuting long distances tend to contribute even more to this lack of flexibility. Any effort to treat golf-related injury or improve the golf swing requires a combined approach that addresses both the spine and joint mechanics and muscle flexibility. The Golf Rehabilitation and 6 | M ALIND OM AG | AU GUST 2 017

Conditioning Programme at Ramsay Sime Darby Ara Damansara Medical Centre is a one stop centre to improve posture and have better control of swings. Golf Rehabilitation and Conditioning Programme does Assessment and Golf swing analysis. It evaluates and identifies golfer’s poor swing mechanics, posture, areas of weakness, imbalances and lack of flexibility in the body, which could lead to potential injuries shortening one’s life span of the game The programme also reduces and prevent injuries. And most impotantly improves overall swing control and self-care techniques. Golfers can manage golf related

injuries and pain by: ● Incorporating “Golf Specific Massage” using Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) techniques. ● Stretching and joint mobilisation techniques to reduce tight muscles and improve joint mobility. ● Kinesio Taping Techniques. Exercise for Golf rehabilitative and conditioning. ● Strengthening and Pilates exercises are designed individually to improve golfer muscular strength and core stability. ● Balance for a better performance and longevity of their game. Singapore Night Festival Happening from 18 August to 26 August this year, the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) is on its 10th run with live music, art installations, sports events and more. SNF basically transforms the Bras Basah/Bugis heritage precinct into a midsummer’s celebration of sorts. Zero in on Armenian Street, which becomes a pedestrian-only area during the festival. This nocturnal extravaganza happens elsewhere around the city too, stretching all the way to Middle Road. This year’s edition will rekindle the romance and beauty of night lights and exhilarating performances, bringing back previous crowd favourites in a refreshing retrospective, while looking forward to its bright future as Singapore’s largest outdoor performing arts festival. The signature highlight of the festival surely must be the interactive light installations that turn the facades of the Singapore Art Museum and the National Museum of Singapore into ephemeral works of wonder. Night owls will enjoy the many events held late

into the night at cultural institutions such as the National Museum of Singapore, the Peranakan Museum, Singapore Art Museum, The Substation and more. There will also be various street and music performances, by local and international artists, all playing their original works. If you are in town, do not miss

your chance to see Singapore’s heritage, arts and culture in an entirely different light.

Date: August 18 - 25, 2017 Place: Bras Basah Precint, Singapore Time: 7pm-2am

Onam Festival in Kerala Athachamayam marks the beginning of the ten day Onam festival in Kerala. It is an occasion to witness almost all the folk art forms of Kerala. Conducted every year on a grand scale, the event will be held at the Royal historical town of Tripunithura. It is a colorful start to Kerala’s Onam

festival than the Athachamayam festival, which kicks off the celebrations. The festival features a street parade accompanied by decorated elephants and floats, musicians, and various traditional Kerala art forms. Conducted every year, the event held at the historical town of Tripunithura is a

celebration of a legendary victory of the Raja (King) of Kochi. In olden days it was customary for the king to travel with his entire entourage to the Tripunithura fort. This was also the occasion for his subjects to greet the king and see him at close quarters. The procession, now without the king, still retains its majestic charm, and is conducted in a spectacular manner. Onam is the most popular festival of the Malayalees and can be traced to the primitive harvest festival and also to the myth regarding King Mahabali the benevolent asura ruler who brought peace and prosperity to his country. Date: August 25 - September 3, 2017. Place: Tripunithura, near Ernakulam in Kochi, India. Time : 8.30am

sustainable utilisation of Kelantan forest resources. It serves as a recreational centre that offers activities such as hiking, abseiling, camping, canopy-walking and cave-exploring. Travellers who are interested in biodiversity can visit the cultivated herbal plants that prove popular among students. If trekking is your cup of tea, visit the pristine Leurew waterfall, about 30-minute from Kampong Redip,

which possesses crystal clear water and refreshing mountainous air. Along the way, travellers would also be able to witness how the Orang Asli from the Temiar tribe put together traditional traps using natural materials to catch squirrels, mice or snakes, which is eyeopening because travellers now can understand better how the Orang Asli survive when living deep inside the Malaysian rainforests.

Kedah This is a must visit for Archaeologist and History buffs. Bujang Valley or better known as Lembah Bujang, attracts International and local Archaeologists for research of early civilization. The historical district in Kedah has drawn tremendous attractions for some of its unknown history behind the district. Bujang Valley is now home to an archaeological museum exhibiting collections and ruins which evidence the existence of a thriving civilisation in this area from the 3rd to the 14th centuries AD. Bujang Valley was called ‘Nusantara’ and its strategic position was known to traders from China, India and the Middle East. The architectural remains and cultural artefacts found at Bujang Valley and the surrounding area prove that a Hindu-Buddhist civilisation existed here until the early 1100’s. Klang Gates Quartz Ridge Trail

Off the beaten track, a hike worthy of adventure travel pictures and footage, the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge Trail follows the 22 kilometer ridge, one of the largest composites of quartz in the world, from one end to the other. Because of rampant urban development, the city is literally just minutes away, providing some amazing views of the skyline from a number of spots along the hike. This hike does include some pretty strenuous uphill climbs to reach the ridge top, as well as a few scary moments along the way where the ridge narrows to a precipitous walking path. The most spectacular part of the quartz ridge is its protruding mid-section, which encompasses Taman Melawati, National Zoo (Zoo Negara) in the Ampang Jaya area and part of Selayang Municipal Area. From a distance, this section is said to resemble the guling ayam (cocks combs) or more dramatically, the spine of a dragon.

Negeri Sembilan

Coastal town, Port Dickson (PD) is the nearest beach escape from the capital city Kuala Lumpur. The 18 km extent of beach from Tanjung Gemuk to Tanjung Tuan is a popular holiday destination for locals and tourist. Beaches dot the coastline running south toward Tanjung Tuan popularly known as Cape Rachado, a wildlife reserve and birdwatching spot with a 16th-century

lighthouse. The coastal area off the cape is famous as the site of the naval Battle of Cape Rachado in 1606, between the Dutch VOC and Portuguese fleets. East of the reserve is Fort Kempas, with a 14th- or 15th-century sacred Islamic tomb and several megaliths. While in PD, a worthwhile visit is The Army Museum. A property of the Malaysian Royal Armed Forces,

the museum traces its exploits and achievements through history, trumped up with dramatised aspects and romantic story-telling. In addition to the museum buildings, the spacious grounds also house decommissioned military vehicles, including planes, tanks and artillery guns and a memorial fountain dedicated to soldiers who served through Malaysia’s war history.

K

im Ma Restaurant located in Palace of the Golden Horses has unveiled its new look recently. Fusion contemporary but essentially still Chinese. It is refurbished as a contemporary dining space with an elegant sophistication in its mood and inspired by a jazzed up Chinois style. Touted as an exquisite yet relaxing dining place, where guests are feted to gastronomic delights of modern Cantonese cuisine with a distinctive difference. Headed by talented Chef Chris Lim, be assured that the cravings will be satisfied after that first bite. With a tastefully appointed interior, there are five private dining

rooms perfect for any special occasion or corporate function. The opulent restaurant evokes an air of elegance with large deconstructed Chinese brass lanterns, plush sofa set and warm lighting. Chef Chris set the tone for a magical dining experience when he conjured up a six course meal with Steamed Prawn Dumplings with traditional Chrysanthemum Beancurd in Superior Chicken Broth, Poached Free Range Chicken in Dried Scallop Sauce, Cantonese Wok Fried Fish Maw in Spicy Fragrant Chicken Floss, Deep Fried Pumpkin with Spicy Rock Salt topped with Black Beans Braised Bitter Gourd and Stir Fry Large Tiger Prawn served with Assorted Mushroom

Fried Rice. Specially created by the Chef, these are the new dishes at Kim Ma. Using only the freshest and quality produce, all the dishes were delectable and flavourful. The last dish is the assorted baked fruits topped with red dates and a scoop of wolfberry ice cream. Beautifully presented, the lovely and healthy dessert consists of assorted baked fruits in tiny pieces that complimented the ice-cream. Taking ice cream to a whole new level, the wolfberry ice cream was delectable and not overly sweet. According to Chef Chris, his dishes are usually a fusion of traditional Chinese cuisines with a contemporary

twist. Creativity is important and he plays with a number of different flavours and food to bring out the best dish. Kim Ma offers fusion fine dining at its best, look no further for a treat to your tastebuds. For reservation, please email fnbreservation@ pgh.mines.com.my or call 603 8946 4888.

Chennai:

Gateway to South India By Esther Chung

The capital of Tamil Nadu is not just an economic powerhouse but an industrial centre for the automobile and technology industries. Beneath its metropolitan skyline is also a unique cultural hub rich with history and modern art. It is also home to the Tamil film industry, with many big names living in the city. If this is your first trip to the South Indian city, here are some sights that you should not miss:

San Thome Basilica It might sound odd to visit a church in a predominantly Hindu country, but the San Thome Basilica is one you should not miss. According to Catholic belief, the basilica was built on top of the tomb of an apostle. Saint Thomas was said to have journeyed all the way to Kerala in his mission to spread the Gospel. He was arrested and martyred on what is now called Saint Thomas Mount in Chennai. This church was then built upon his remains. It is one of the only three churches to be built above the remains of an apostle. First built in the 16th century by the Portuguese, the church was rebuilt in the 19th century by the British in the present Gothic style. It was raised to the status of a minor basilica in 1956 and now houses an attached museum for visitors. Opening hours: 6am-8pm Admission fee: None

Elliot’s is not as crowded as the famous Marina Beach, but has its own charm and footprints in history as well. 5 Top

Places In Nepal for easy going travellers By Kathleen Poon

Nepal is often associated with adventurous travellers. With eight of the world’s top ten highest summits in Nepal including Mount Everest, it is no wonder that travellers come to this small country only to trek the Himalayan hiking trails. But is that all there is to see in Nepal? Many are not aware that Nepal is a diverse country, packed with amazing sights from ancient temples and tropical jungle to picturesque valleys and snow-capped peaks within a short distance. To enjoy Nepal that does not involve long arduous journey on foot at high altitude levels, here are non-trekking activities that never fail to deliver an unforgettable experience:

Explore Durbar Squares in Kathmandu Valley One of the first tour activities to do upon arrival in Kathmandu is to explore the historical grounds of Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley. There are three Durbar Squares in the valley Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan – these historical grounds are essentially palaces, quadrangles, courtyards and ancient temples that date back to 17th and 18th centuries (some even older). The attraction of the Durbar Squares are mainly the strikingly impressive traditional Newari architecture of magnificently carved wooden windows and balconies, and timeless stone carvings of Hindu and Tibetan deities.

VOYAGE | NEPAL

Have a communion with God at ancient temples Nepal is known as the melting pot of Hinduism and Buddhism, therefore it is a must to visit some of their spectacular stupas and temples.Sitting atop a hill overlooking Kathmandu, Swayambhunath is a Tibetan-Buddhist temple complex consisting of a stupa, shrines and monasteries. The stupa has a dome with a structure painted with eyes of Buddha looking in all four directions of Kathmandu. The temple is also called the Monkey Temple as there are many monkeys roaming around the complex. Because of its hilltop locations, Swayambhunath is the best place to watch the sun set over the sprawling city. As for the Hindu faith, Pashupatinath Temple is one of the sacred temples situated on the banks of the Bagmati River, built in Nepalese pagoda style and dedicated to the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. The main temple is opened to Hindus only while non-Hindus are free to walk around the surrounding complex where there are religious stalls selling marigold flowers, prasad (offerings), prayer beads, incense, and sadhus readily available for photo opportunities for a small fee. Situated outside the city centre is Boudhanath, the largest spherical Tibetan-Buddhist stupa in Nepal. The best time to visit Boudhanath is in the early evening when scores of pilgrims converged at the dome of the stupa to do the kora (ritual circumnavigation clockwise) and chant mantras.

Spot wildlife in Chitwan National Park Chitwan National Park, a World Heritage-listed reserve covers 932 sq km of jungle and grasslands, is one of the best wildlife national parks in Asia to spot deers, monkeys, a variety of bird species, and the elusive Bengal Tiger, of which as many as 120 tigers are in the national park. Chitwan had embarked on successful campaigns in protecting and preserving animals, two of which are the anti-poaching patrols that have led to an increase in the population of the one-horned rhino and elephants are now used as walking guides in the jungle rather than as rides for tourists. Be at peace at the birthplace of Buddha in Lumbini Another World Heritage-listed site of huge religious significance is Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama – Buddha. Right in the spiritual heart of Lumbini is the Lumbini Development Zone, a huge park consisting of monasteries built by Buddhist communities from around the world. Many visitors also flock to the Maya Devi Temple which marks the spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Buddha, and the adjoining gardens to see the pillar of Ashoka, ancient ruins and Bodhi trees decorated with prayer flags.

Relax in laid-back Pokhara After all the sight-seeing in Nepal, there’s no better place to recharge your batteries than in Pokhara. Pokhara lies on the bank of a tranquil Lake Phewa, surrounded by the Annapurna mountain range. Depending on the weather, you may find yourself lucky to have a clear view of the snowclad mountains from your hotel room. Should you feel the need to be more active, you can go on a boat cruise on Lake Phewa or walk up Shanti Stupa for beautiful views of the city, lake and mountains. 26 | M ALIND OM AG | AU GUST 2 017

Hon Chen Temple Festival

The Hon Chen Temple Festival is organised twice every year in the 3rd and the 7th lunar months. The festival takes place at the Hon Chen temple, 10km west of Hue. It starts with a procession referred to as the God Welcoming ceremony, said to bring all the worshipped Gods from the village temples and shrines to the communal house where various rituals are performed, including the procession in honour of Saint Mother Thien Y A Na. The procession takes place at night on the Perfume River, which shines with a myriad of lights. The procession involves a long line of boats bound together into bigger rafts. The Hon Chen Temple Festival includes a performance filled with imperial characters. Actors dressed in clothes with splendid turbans and tunics look like princes and princesses of the Nguyen

dynasty. These shows take place in the natural settings of mountains, hills, and rivers. This Antique Museum of Nature shows flags, fans, hammocks, umbrellas, weapons, and offerings. The grand-sacrifices offering ceremony

takes place in the morning of the following day. In the afternoon the palanquin processions come back to Hue Nam Shrine. At the end of the festival are ceremonies of releasing and floating lanterns.
