Season’s Greetings As the holiday season kicks in and the year almost coming to a close, most of us would take a breather to reflect on what we have achieved so far. For Malindo Air, it has been an exciting 2015 with the arrival of new additions to the existing fleet that led to the launch of new routes, bringing new partnerships across the region. Just last month, we proudly flew our inaugural flight to Perth, Australia from Kuala Lumpur – making our first of many marks planned for the land down under. This is among the many other new routes we have launched this year, including Kuala Lumpur to Trivandrum, Penang to Trichy, Singapore to Ipoh and the ever exclusive Kuala Lumpur to Amritsar. Celebrating our arrival in Australia, Perth adorns this issue’s cover with its authentic charms and you can read all about this wonderful destination on page 10. We also made a trip to Melaka to visit its historical wonders. The party continues as we head towards the end of the year with highlights on Christmas and

New Year countdowns in places Malindo Air flies to and what better ways to celebrate than through a gastronomic fest in a restaurant featured in Feast. With the arrival of our tenth and final order of the year for the Boeing 737-800 last month, we end 2015 on a high note with a total fleet size of 27. We invite you to join in on the celebration at any of our destinations in just a few clicks on our improved website, designed specifically to smoothen your booking process and transactions. Moving forward, we are excited to jump into 2016 with bigger plans for route expansion. Some of the routes currently on our radar are Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Colombo in Sri Lanka and Hong Kong, the “Pearl of the Orient” of the East. Stay tuned and we assure that you are in for a treat. Till then, sit back, relax, and enjoy your flight. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2016! Chandran Rama Muthy CEO, Malindo Air

ON THE COVER PERTH

B

ased on my personal memories of yesteryears, this city based in Western Australia seemed to be isolated and not as captivating as other larger cities in Australia. Therefore, during my teenage phase when my family was discussing the choice of destination for our next holiday, it is no surprise that Perth never came up. Instead, of course, Sydney and Melbourne topped the list, being also very popular choices among many Asians in general. When I do hear some families and friends whom have planned a holiday to Perth in the past, I would wander if it is because of it being closest proximity of a “western influenced country. But 15 years down the road, with pictures and travel tales of other travellers, and with my very own experience

recently, I have a whole new impression of this remarkable city. What bedazzled me most was, not only Perth has ample attractions of its own, but it serves as a central hub with air accessibility to other fascinating points within Western Australia. Most of which are serene weekend or holiday escapades for the locals which may not be commercially known to many foreigners. I will be sure to include points on these amazing places as you read along. Perth is also ironically seen as a land of opportunity for building careers, but simultaneously a land which is popularly considered by migrants and locals from bigger cities for post-retirement living as well. This is more so due to its laid back culture and peaceful ambience making it a wellbalanced place to live in. This by

far captured my heart personally and of course its greatlymaintained nature. Whether Perth is one of the pitspot in your itinerary or you intend to experience a thorough Western Australia holiday, you are definitely going to mark an extraordinary memory in your travel diary. All in a day at Fremantle Located approximately 30 minutes away from the main city, Fremantle is a bustling city, which is constantly lively with locals and tourists alike making the best out of their weekends or holidays. It was initially the gateway to Australia during the sea travel days, whereby migrants arrived and many have made it their home. Following this, the Fremantle harbour has and still remains as one of the more historic landmarks

in Western Australia. What makes this place very interesting is that it has developed not only as a ma jor tourist attraction, but has managed to preserve its authentic architecture and local cultures with the influence of migrant traders. If you are on a pit stop or a very short business trip in Perth wherein your leisure time is limited, then Fremantle should be the ultimate place to complete your Perth sightseeing. For a rather small place, it has a lot going on that one may need a whole day or even two to really take in all the charms that the harbour has to offer. My personal favourite is the Fremantle markets. Located in a ma jestic and classic Victorian building, I was blown away by the array of goods available at the markets. From local antiques, jewelleries, Australian arts and crafts, trendy clothes to fresh produce fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, coffee and savouries. While the market is rich with local trades there is also a harmonious blend of foreign influence with the local fare, such as goods and food from China, Thailand, Turkish, French and Vietnam. The must have 12 | MALINDOMAG

however is the Fish and Chips by the sea breeze. A generous portion costs around AUD10 to AUD12 and is likely to keep you contented. Almost all of them taste as good as the other. If you are lucky you will get to view live entertainment from street performers just outside the market as well. The markets are open on weekends and public holidays. However, during the Christmas season the trading hours are extended even on weekdays. There are more detailed information on special activities and operation hours during the holiday seasons on their official website. Young ones are sure to be hopping with enthusiasm when they learn of the petting zoo within the vicinity. This reserve is set in a more informal venue with Australian wildlife whereby visitors can have a more up-close experience in comparison to larger reserves. Another interesting point is the Maritime Museum whereby it reserves all tales of the sea travel times. And finally after a day of walking, shopping and sight-seeing, swing by the street of bars, cafes

and restaurants and fulfil your taste buds and quench away your thirst with Australia’s finest food and beverages. The more adventurous way to get around Fremantle is walking. Optionally there are free shuttle buses that get you around ma jor attractions within the city. You may also go on a scenic cruise that departs from Perth city to Fremantle with informative commentary by the Captain and complementary refreshments. Picnic at King’s Park This iconic park is known to be one of the biggest city parks in the world. Also partially recognised at Perth Botanical Gardens, this popular spot allows you to take breath-taking views of the renowned attractions of the city with the lushly manicured gardens. Within the vicinity you can also learn a little of the European and Aborigine influence and visit the War Memorial site. The garden is also perfect for picnics, hence it is a good idea to pack up your favourite food or snacks to just relax and bond with family or friends. There are also

ample of cafes available around the park where you can purchase delicious local savouries and rich ice-creams. The best times for outdoor picnics are during summer and sunny spring. Indulging flavours at Swan Valley Australia is widely known for the production of exquisite wines. Well, the western part of it is somewhat more renowned, hence good news for those whom appreciate and MALINDOMAG | 13

wish to savour rich sips in their palates. Offering tastings in one of the oldest wine region, Swan Valley brings you through 40 vineyards. Here you can walk to the cellars, cycle through the yards or simply enjoy a river cruise while indulging in wines of your choice. Relaxing along Cottesloe Beach For the locals, this is the place to be at during summer and sunny spring days. Being the most popular city beach, it is approximately 15 minutes away from the heart of the city. It is a perfect place to relax and watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean and simultaneously enjoy fresh seafood along the shore restaurants. Sassy Nightlife While some parts of the suburban areas may seem quiet and settled in for the night, there is the other end which is bustling with bars 14 | MALINDOMAG

and clubs just as any other metro cities. From live bands, to musicals and theatre, there is some form of entertainment available for tourists coming from many walks of life. The Crown Casino in Perth is also one of the most talked about entertainment spot, which is open till wee hours of the morning with bars, restaurants and accommodation available within the building. Golfing in Collier Park Many golf addicts refuse to leave their comfort zone, afraid of missing their golf routines. Therefore sometimes, other family members will have to face the consequences by foregoing any holiday trips or activities. Well, no more excuses daddies! Here at Collier Park Golf Course, there is a state-of-the-art 27 hole global standard course available not only for golfers, but children or ladies

wishing to explore this premium sport. It could turn out to be a fun family outing given the facilities and picturesque avenue. It could also be the perfect break for those on business trips. Cruising through Western Australia As mentioned initially, those considering a longer break should explore the locals’ favourite escapade such as Busselton, Margaret River and Albany. Each city has its own charms, but the road trip itself is a pleasing experience of its own. With beautiful coastal roads and mesmerising views along the way, you are sure to enjoy the ride especially if you have wonderful company. You could actually rent cars for a reasonable fee depending on the type and duration of use. Optionally, there are also direct buses available to these

enchanting spots, either from Perth city or the airport. Weather it is a short weekend escapade or a longer year-end or annual holiday, Perth will somehow be an ideal location. Those who have the luxury of time and finances (which are undeniably the vital subjects in any holiday plans) can of course explore beyond Perth, into other cities within Western Australia. However, for those who have limited time and resources, you should take every opportunity to explore the city, be it the urban aspects or the ‘country’ part of it. Malindo Air launched its inaugural flight to Perth last month and have well-timed their daily flights and fares competitively. Melaka Revisited O Check out our list of all-time favourite things to do in the historical city of Melaka

ne might find it hard to imagine that the small town of Melaka – or Malacca – was once a bustling hub for maritime trade, so much so that even the great Ming dynasty’s admiral Zheng was documented to have stopped by the town. Legend has it that the state’s namesake is the tree in Melaka that Parameswara was resting under when he saw a mousedeer kick one of his dogs into a nearby river, and the rest, as they say, is history. Hailed as the starting point of the country’s civilisation, Melaka is often labelled as Malaysia’s most historic state. It was founded sometime

during the 14th century, and would go on to become a pivotal port and trading post for Southeast Asia. Today, it stands as a cultural and national icon with its range of architectural, culinary and cultural offerings. Its historical significance was certified in 2008, when it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The state boasts of a number of attractions and delicacies to be visited and eaten. To help you get the most out of your visits to the once melting pot of the world, here is a guide on the must-try items of Melaka that will make your experience in the state a memorable one.

WANDERLUST MELAKA

Must-Eats Satay Celup Satay celup is ideally enjoyed with a group of friends, family or loved ones. It is the practice of dipping various foods on a stick into a bowl of scorching hot, thick and flavourful peanut sauce. These foods include both meats and vegetables, ranging from fishcakes, shrimps, fish, and fried wantons to stuffed okras, and raw vegetables. Be warned though, this is a favourite local delicacy, with people travelling from all over Malaysia to enjoy it. Long lines and substantial waiting time are, as such, to be expected. The dish is so popular that it has made its way across to other states of Malaysia, and even spawned variants with different types of sauces available to try.

Chicken Rice Ball It’s one thing to have standard chicken rice, and another thing entirely to have chicken rice balls. Yes, the delectable accompanying dishes are essentially the same: steamed or roasted chicken, the signature Hainanese chilli sauce, cucumbers and bean sprouts. The rice, however, makes all the difference here. It is cooked in chicken soup with hearty seasonings, before being rolled into bitesized balls. These addictive rice-balls will have you popping them in your mouth non-stop, so forget about a no-carb diet, the Melaka Chicken Rice Balls are to die for.

Must Shops Jonker Walk Officially named Jalan Hang Jebat, but also known by many as Jonker Walk, it is the centre street of Chinatown Melaka. A dose of retail therapy and a feast for the senses is what you can expect when strolling through Melaka’s Jonker Walk. Formerly a noblemen’s street for the rich and famous Peranakan Chinese (also known as Baba and Nyonya), Jonker Street is now a wellknown tourist attraction as it offers an array of activities such as visiting museums and galleries. During the day, this alley blossoms due to its wide variety of antiques and crafts. An antique collector’s heaven, Jonker Walk offers assorted items, knick-knacks and bargain antiques. On Friday and Saturday nights, the entire street is closed off to cars and transforms into a vibrant and lively night market, with abundant culinary offerings for you to sample and relish. The momentum and energy escalates during these periods as tourists, and locals alike flock to the area to get their hands on some of Melaka’s most delicious cuisines and street food. Some of the street foods available are Nyonya Laksa, noodles in a chicken and prawn curry broth served with tau fu pok (a kind of fried tofu), fishballs, and sheets of fried Chinese beancurd skin, Muah Chee, a Chinese dessert made of glutinous rice on a stick coated in sugar and ground up peanuts, and the list goes on. Expect to leave with shopping bags full in both hands, and a food coma of gastronomical proportions when you drop by Jonker Walk. > Where? Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200 Melaka, Malaysia MALINDOMAG | 17

Must-Sees Stadthuys Believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East, the red establishment that is the Stadthuys is easily Melaka’s most iconic structure, being recognisable from the very first glance. Built in 1650, the structure is a fine example of Dutch colonial architecture, which mirrors the Frisian town hall in the Netherlands. The office was in use for over three centuries by the Dutch, Portuguese and British before it was converted into a museum in 1982. Today, the Stadthuys serves as a reminder of Melaka’s status as a former Dutch colony and the history and ethnography of Melaka, showcasing traditional bridal costumes and relics from the state’s over 400-year history. The Stadthuys is a must-see on our list if you’re a history buff, as it is testament to the olden days of the state, taking you back in time to the colonial history of Melaka. > Where? Jalan Gereja, 75000 Melaka, Malaysia

A’Famosa Your visit to Melaka is not complete without stopping by the renowned A Famosa? The once magnificent A’Famosa settlement and fort now stands in ruins; what remains of A’Famosa is the Porta de Santiago (a small gate house), but it is still a vital part of Melaka’s landscape. Built in 1511 when the Portuguese first arrived in Melaka by Alfonso de Albuquerque (who led the Portuguese invasion on the Malay Sultanate), the structure used to sprawl across the entire hillside. The name carries the meaning ‘The Famous’ in Portuguese, and was constructed as a stronghold against enemies and invasions. While A’Famosa today is a shell of its former glory, the place is certainly still a sight to behold, a timeless monument that bears a reminder of the rich and diverse history of Melaka. The old cannons and tombs that can be found around its vicinity are tell-tale signs of this, along with the neighbouring St. Paul’s Church which is almost as old as A’Famosa itself. > Where? Cheng Hoon Teng Temple The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is an important cultural and historical landmark in Melaka. Founded in the 1600s by the Chinese Kapitan Tay Kie Ki or also known as Tay Hong Yong, the temple served the local Hokkien community’s religious needs and also functioned as the official administrative centre and court of justice for the Kapitans. Its architecture is a reflection of the origins of its builders, who hailed from the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian in China. The temple was built in 1645 by Kapitan Lee Wei King, who imported materials from China, with the main hall constructed by Kapitan Chan Ki Lock in 1704. Rebuilding was undertaken by Kapitan Chima Chua Su Cheong, who also contributed to the aesthetic and magnificent structural additions of the temple. One of the unique features of the temple is the housing of the two remains of the three Kapitans who contributed to its construction. It is also known for its elaborate decorations, including detailed sculptures and carvings of dragons and deities. The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is said to be the oldest functioning temple in Malaysia. > Where? 25, Jalan Tokong, 75200 Melaka, Malaysia

Must-Do Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum combines three of Melaka’s signature Peranakan terrace houses that were acquired by the Chan Family into one magnificent complex. Two of the terrace houses were used as the main homestead, while the other served as the servants’ quarters before the three lots were converted into a museum in March 1985. The name of the museum was derived from the term Baba, an honorific manner of addressing a Straitsborn gentleman and Nyonya, which addresses a Straits-born lady. Today, the house takes visitors on a journey through Melaka—and Malaysia—in the 19th and 20th centuries, during which the Peranakan community thrived and blossomed in the country, allowing you to understand all the traits and features which made this group a unique and imperative part of Malaysia. The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum is still managed by the descendants of the Chan family. > Where? No. 48 & 50 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, 75200 Malacca City, Malaysia

Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum In the same complex as the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, The Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum exhibits furniture and jewellery that displays the richness of Peranakan culture. Jewellery-making equipment are also on display for visitors to explore and gain some insights on how precious gems and stones are shaped. The museum also houses a section that allows guests to understand Melaka’s culture through changes in its fashion and styling scene. From Peranakan jewellery to traditional furniture, each iconic part of the lifestyle of Melaka’s locals is showcased here. It’s not easy to miss this museum too, as it has a cyan exterior that complements its elaborate and decorated interior. New Year’s Eve in Bangkok is celebrated with a bang as the host one of the biggest celebrations in the region. From rooftop parties and river cruises to shopping malls and night markets, you’ll be able to be part of the festivities anywhere in Bangkok, enjoying a spectacular view of fireworks welcoming the New Year.

to lookout for is Ambang Tahun Baru, a celebration sponsored by the government that is held at Merdeka Square. Every year, the event is broadcasted live on TV for people across the nation to view. In addition, private organisations also hold New Year’s countdown parties, with the most noteworthy ones held at The Curve, Changkat Bukit Bintang, and KLCC Park, and the fireworks display at the Petronas Towers being the highlight of the celebration.

Bangkok Like other cities in the Asian region, Bangkok also joins in the festivities with street decorations and mall displays. Christmas lights dazzles the city, as the streets, malls, lamp post and sometimes even the tuk tuks are cuddled in blings. In addition to discounts and bargains offered in the malls, the many different kinds of markets in Bangkok is also great for last minute Christmas shopping and you might even find something unique to the destination.

Delhi Carnivals are held throughout Delhi to celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah. A large feast is held in Saket for families to celebrate. High discounts are provided during the year-end season, making shopping very lucrative. The high levels of pollution in Delhi have discouraged fireworks displays on New Year but grand parties are held throughout the capital. Like Mumbai, the general populace holds private parties for family and friends, but renowned bands and artists perform on various venues and glitz parties are held at five star hotels that attract revellers and partygoers. Singapore Natural snow and live reindeers may not be what you’ll find, but Christmas in Singapore is just a grand as it is in other parts of the world. My flight was excellent with smooth check-in, large legroom, free snack and the best is we departed from the main airport KLIA2. Keep it up Malindo Air! -Mohd Noor Muhammad Amir (Malaysia)

It is my pleasure to write this testimonial to Malindo Air’s CEO and management to compliment one of your fine team member, M. Gunasekar, Malindo Air’s manager based in Kathmandu (KTM). The earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April and over the next two days, thousands of people including myself were trapped in an extremely chaotic situation in KTM airport, with a Malindo Air reservation at hand. I went to Malindo Air KTM office to seek help and updates for my reservation, rescheduled flights and missed connections. I was very glad that Gunasekar was there to help. He was the only trained officer/staff on duty that day in the office. There was also another support staff present, but I don’t think he was trained on ticketing/reservation. Despite the chaotic air traffic situation at KTM and lack of manpower and support in the office, Gunasekar handled the constant in-flow of frustrated passengers who had no updated information on their flights and were eager to leave KTM with utter patience. Even though he had not slept for 48 hours, he showed great dedication in helping all the passengers waiting in line for his assistance. His exhibited great professionalism when multi-tasking as a station manager and ticketing/reservation agent, while simultaneously checking air traffic advisories with various Malaysian airlines and authorities in Kathmandu, Malaysia, Indonesia and India. When dealing with customers’ complaints, fear and frustrations, Gunasekar was all the time calm and reassuring. I saw many customers leaving Malindo Air office satisfied, reassured, and relieved, despite not knowing the status of their flights due to many uncertainties caused by the earthquake. I hope that the management of Malindo Air recognises Gunasekar as a great asset. He is a staff, manager and leader who has shown great dedication and passion for his job, and he is someone who believes in delivering the highest quality of service to the passengers of Malindo Air. -Kelvin Pow (Singapore)

“Thank you to all our passengers for the generous compliments and feedback! If you would like to share your feedback with us, kindly email it to info@malindoair.com. Once again, thank you for your continuous support towards Malindo Air!” 24 / MALINDOMAG

I flew to Penang on Malindo Air and was very well treated by your stewardess. She was very kind – I told her I had a bad headache and she gave me a glass of warm water and Panadol. Upon checking in as well, I find your ground staff very helpful. I mentioned that I am a senior citizen (65-years-old) and was having a bad headache and they let me go to the front of the queue, so there was no delay in boarding. For a new airline, I think your staffs are doing a good job and they should be commended. I also like their uniforms. -Bharathi Naidoo (Malaysia)

Thank you very much for your fast response and assistance on Facebook. I really appreciate it. Looking forward to flying with Malindo Air again. -Roger Lieu Toh Choon (Malaysia)

In-flight entertainment is available with a personal TV on each seat. Understandably a low cost airline but in some ways, it seems to be more than ‘low cost’ - Patrick Tan (Malaysia).

Black Forest – The German Restaurant & Bar in KL

T

his authentic German hang-out is almost a hidden treasure amongst the crowded pre-war colonial shop-houses that have been in the last decade or two refurbished into restaurants and music-blasting clubs or bars on Changkat Bukit Bintang; touted as the Piccadilly Circus of Kuala Lumpur. At a glance, one might think it is only a good drinking hole but, there is more in store than what meets the eye in this unassuming yet authentic German restaurant. Bethinking his roots in 2013, Werner Kuhn opened an authentic German restaurant with food inspired from the region of

Black Forest; purportedly the best region in Germany for food and drinks and hence Black Forest KL was born. Featuring various beers on tap such as Guinness, Paulaner, Kirin(to name a few), but if you prefer your regular pint, do not worry as there are also the usual imported beers like the classic German Beck, Erdinger, Franziskaner and others. It is worth mentioning that here is the only place in Kuala Lumpur where one could enjoy a pint of Warsteiner. Going through the extensive beverage list, you will also discover there are more beyond the beers. From sangrias to wine or simply

juices to water and not forgetting the caffeinated folks, coffee and tea, Black Forest has made a great effort to ensure that it meets everyone’s preferences. Schnapps, an English translation derived from the German word Schnaps, is also sold by the shot to be enjoyed in Black Forest as a digestif as Black Forest is definitely keen on sharing with you the German taste while you relax and unwind with your pals or associates. A little fun fact, more often than not, the most common fruits used to create German Schnapps are cherries, plums, pears and apples with cherries being the most expensive fruit to

use and apples being the least. Black Forest serves a selection of schnapps beginning with the most commonly enjoyed Kammer Williams made from Williams pear to the aromatic Zibartle made of wild sloe plums found in the Black Forest region of Germany. And of course, not forgetting the food inspired by the “Culinary Paradise” of Germany; Black Forest, a region with the highest concentration of Michelin starred restaurants holding a total of eight stars amongst three restaurants. One of the most famous dishes Black Forest has on the menu that regulars swear by is the Bayerische Schweinshaxe, a boneless crispy pork knuckle with a blistered crispy crackling on the outside and tender juicy meat in the inside. And of course, nothing beats serving crispy pork knuckle the traditional way with potato dumplings, red cabbage, apple mousse and mustard beer sauce. Exploring further, you will be

greeted with the classic ambience which reflects the “Black Forest” in Germany, where the German culinary is always the highlight. Yes, a gastronomical experience is very much part of this snug place. German surroundings plus familiar German food makes your meal complete. Looking further through the menu, you will see another quintessentially German favourite, Schnitzel in various forms! German Schnitzels are made from pork unlike other countries where the use of mutton, veal, reindeer, beef and etc are common. It is basically a boneless meat pounded very thinly, no more than a ¼ inch thick, coated with flour, beaten eggs and bread crumbs before being fried at very high heat. And as tradition dictates, each Schnitzel dish is served with a small green garden salad and spaetzle (which you can always swop for French fries or potato salad). And if you’re wondering, rest assured, you do not need to eat them in that order if you fancy, as long as you are comfortable and having a wonderful time – genießen! But the king of all dishes has to be the “Pork Havoc” dish perfect for any true German or Germanophile! A collection of the best dishes and of course beer to wash it down, the “Pork Havoc” is meant to be shared between four people as it consists of four types of sausages,

schnitzels, German pork knuckle, baby back ribs, mini sausage skewer, green salad, potato salad, sauerkraut, 11 glasses of Tiger beer (served in a meter long tray!) and ¼ meter long board of schnapps equivalent to 5 shots. Just hearing about it makes one’s tummy groan in delight! But not to fret if you are a small eater, Black Forest KL also serves snacks to wash down with your beer, cold starters like salads for a warm night or soups for a chilly one. And who could ever forget German staple food such as cheese spaetzle which can be found under the pasta section or Berliner Currywurst Mit Fritten; a panfried sausage with German curry sauce and French fries. Oh, we are not done yet! If you are still undecided on what to have for desserts, we recommend the jazzed up version of a Black Forest cake of course! Meant to delight the sweet tooth, this luscious dessert is made from chocolate cake dipped in schnapps topped with kirsch marinated cherries and whipped cream. As a restaurant & bar, this is a great setting for any meet-ups, dinner with wine, simple meal with a pint or simply several rounds of drinks with pals. Most importantly, it feels very German indeed! Guten Appetit! Prost!

here is so much to love about the wonderful game of golf. Hands down, one of the neatest things about it is the different design and layout of golf courses. It is also a game that requires golfers to have a whole lot of tricks in the bag as the skill required varies through different courses. From course to course, nothing is the same! Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is built on the north short of Java Island, on a low coastal plain wherein it truly experiences the best of tropical weather. Being a metropolitan city in itself, with a population of approximately 13 million people, golfers can find more than 35

Though Jakarta is famous for its heavy traffic, it is served by a system of high-speed toll roads that makes these golf courses less than an hour from its city centre and ma jor hotels. With Jakarta being situated in a prime geographical location in the Asia-Pacific region; it is no wonder golf lovers think nothing less than flying to Jakarta for the weekend just for a round or two. Being the central city of Indonesia, Jakarta is also no doubt one of the busiest hubs for businesses which attracts many businessman who more often than not have their business meetings on the golf course instead of

Airborne with Toddlers The idea of going airborne with toddlers is very stressful for travelling parents but it’s also hard on the children themselves. Starting your vacation with a tantrum by an unhappy child can ruin your vacation before it even starts. By careful and creative planning, you can make your journey enjoyable for both you and your children and enjoy the holiday season. Here are some helpful tips for successful plane trips with young children. • Pack a baby/diaper bag: Fit as many toys and food packets in your carry-on luggage as possible. Carry an extra shirt for you and your child in case your child accidentally spills a drink or gets airsick. Be prepared for all your child’s needs and carry extra supplies. • Child Restraint: Malindo Air provides infant safety belts during safety debriefing. You may also bring your own seat belt. Be sure to tuck your baby safely in and don’t hesitate to ask the flight attendant for any assistance. • Ask for a bassinet: If you are flying with a young toddler then when booking your ticket 32 / MALINDOMAG

or assigning your seat, be sure to let the agents know that you need a bassinet. They are located in Row 1 in Business class and Row 4 in Economy class in the Boeing 737 flights. Strollers are not allowed onboard the flight and are to be checked in but you may use one inside the airport. Ease ear pain: Buy hard candies and toffies so that your children have something to suck on. The sucking will help ease the discomfort from changes in ear pressure. Crunchy snacks will also do the trick, as the jaw motion helps clear the ear. Or you can get your child to yawn by yawning yourself since yawns are contagious. Aisle Seat: Try to book an aisle seat for yourself, since your child’s various needs will have you reaching into the overhead compartment continuously. Cold symptoms: If your child is showing symptoms of a cold, book an appointment with a doctor before the flight to ensure he can fly. Flying can aggravate a cold and make your child very miserable.

Distractions: Keep your children distracted by giving them toys to play with. A game on your tablet/phone can keep them occupied for almost the entire flight. Movies on the In-flight entertainment system are also available that are child-friendly. • Take a pillow: Small children can use the pillow to prop themselves to look out of the window. Having a familiar pillow also comforts them and helps them sleep in unfamiliar conditions. • Ask for help: Flight attendants are your allies. If you’re alone, don’t be shy about asking the flight crew for help with toddler air travel. It can be nearly impossible to lift a bag and put it in the overhead bin while keeping an eye on a child. Also, consider asking for extra pillows, blankets, or water if needed. A family holiday with your little ones is what memories are made of, but planning is essential if you want to get the most out of your time away. Your child’s safety and comfort – and your peace of mind – are very important to us, so don’t hesitate to ask us for assistance.

(22 November – 21 December) With go-getter Mars in Sagittarius, you’re looking for awakening experiences that teaches you more about yourself. Travel to an industry convention to expand your business moxie. Tune into the mind-bodysoul connection at a yoga workshop on a warm beach or immerse yourself in a different culture to challenge your assumptions about the world. A sentimental journey to a place you loved in the past just won’t warm your heart now; you need to stretch and meet new people. Source: Tripbase ®

Scorpio (22 October – 21 November)

Aries (21 March – 19 April)

Leo (23 July – 22 August)

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

Maybe it’s because he saw your mom reading “Are Men Necessary,” but it sure seems like dad could use some extra love right about now. With four planets in Scorpio and your house of fatherhood, it’s a good time to honor a beloved man in your life dad or otherwise. Fly in for Christmas dinner or plan his perfect dream vacation then go on it together. Just remember to leave your wild and crazy side behind.

While everyone else is focused on eating this month, you’ve never felt more like burning calories. Head for the hills the kind with the black diamonds at the trailhead, or the views of the entire city when you get to the top. Breaks are fine in between but don’t spend too much time chit-chatting and sitting around. It’s time to move that stuck energy in your life, literally and figuratively. You’ll melt away stress and probably a few pounds to boot.

It’s all relative as in your ancestors, with Mars in your house of family. Dig out the family tree, muster up your curiosity and honor your roots (where your grandparents grew up). You’ll learn about yourself through family focus, even if you get different hotel rooms to handle your different sleeping habits.

You light up when the sun goes down so pick a place where everything stays open late and travel with a companion who agrees that sunset is just the beginning of the day. If you’re single, you’ll attract more potential companions than you’re used to and maybe even a keeper among them. As a couple, use the after-dark hours to show off new clothes and of course, each other.

The world is your classroom as you set off in a quest for an educational adventure. You’re a natural teacher, so take the kids, even if they have to skip school. Start with the guided tour but don’t miss hidden streets where you’ll find gems not included in any guidebooks. Stay away from chain hotels. The planets in your investigative house are craving authenticity, not a fast Wi-Fi connection.

With planets in both your fifth house of glamour and your sixth house of pragmatism, you are in the market for “budget luxe” and when you find it you will be very happy indeed. Look into hotels with incentives, like an extra night free or a spa treatment included. Bring your holiday gift list and continue bargain hunting for artisan gifts with the personal touches that show you care.

With red-hot Mars in your house of romance you need a quiet place to get crazy with a significant other. Get ready to do a lot of nothing as in lying on a bearskin rug doing nothing, cuddling in the Jacuzzi doing nothing. Single? Grab a book and plant yourself in front of the fireplace at that ski lodge and you’re likely to attract a fellow intellectual.

If you’ve ever felt like the black sheep of the family for blowing off a holiday or birthday party you just couldn’t face, now’s the time to make up for it. With motivator Mars in your domestic sector, you actually want to have a family gettogether for Thanksgiving. If someone else is planning the holiday, get ready to pack up and pitch in. If not, invite everyone to your house then show them a good “vacation” time around town.

Sometimes you wish someone else (like a magical fairy godmother) would do all the planning and let you just sit back and enjoy the ride. This month, go find one! Tag along with a friend or relative who’s already got something planned with 4 planets in your house of peers you are up for some companionship anyway. Tell them you want to feel like a teenager again and see what they come up with.

Your three best travel companions this month are me, myself and I. Take a break from needy friends or guilt-inducing relatives and take care of yourself, though it doesn’t mean you need to spend all your time solo or in silence. With four planets in Scorpio, your adventurous side is in just the right mood to strike up a conversation with the hottie at the bar, or find your new best friend on line for buffet.

You can’t change the world all by yourself, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend your vacation trying. With Mars and the Sun in your charitable twelfth house, you have an urge to cuddle orphans, help build houses or just spend a week working in the soup kitchen. Group travel is the best way to get this done and it has the added bonus of letting you relax a little at least before the world-changing starts and let someone else plan how you’ll make a difference and where you’ll eat afterwards.

IN-FLIGHT WIFI & MOBILE

Five Great Ways to Wi-Fi

When You Fly

Let ’s face it. Nobody wants to be disconnected from their digital lives when travelling, whether it ’s for business or pleasure. For many of us, the thought of going digitally dark for even a few hours seems unbearable. Thankfully, advances in WiFi have made it easier than ever for passengers to enjoy the same experience at 30,000 feet as they do when at home or the office.

42 | MALINDOMAG

IN-FLIGHT WIFI & MOBILE

To help you stay connected during your flight, here are five great ways to take full advantage of our on-board Wi-Fi system for your smartphone, tablet or laptop computer: 1.

2.

3.

Keep Up with Social Media Social media has become an integral part of life for many of us, whether we use it to keep in touch with our friends and loved ones, stay on top of what’s happening in our local communities, or simply for entertainment. So don’t be shy. Share your “flight status” with your friends and tell them how wonderful it is to be soaring above the clouds. Communicate via Email With high-speed broadband access you can send and receive email with ease. Before you connect, be sure to configure your email to download attachments upon request. It’s also a good idea to download large files before or after your flight. Send Text Messages If you prefer, you can also send text messages via WhatsApp, which allows you to send messages outside of your mobile carrier’s data plan. If you don’t have this app on your devices, be sure to install it before you next flight.

4.

Surf the Web Visiting your favorite entertainment sites, shopping, or reading up on the latest news – it’s all just a few clicks away. Simply click the “Connect Now” button on our home page, which will take you to a T-Mobile payment page with four pass options ranging from 30 minutes to 12 hours. From there, you can select the pass that fits your needs best and get online in seconds. Be sure to avoid sights with streaming media, which can slow down the WiFi service onboard.

5.

Get Work Done If you prefer to be productive during your flight, you can use our WiFi to access your company’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) so you can get down to business and get work done.

Helpful Tips for a Better Wi-Fi Experience • Disable automatic updates and system backups on the device you’re using • Avoid opening too many browser tabs or windows • Download any apps you might need before you board the aircraft

Wherever your Wi-Fi-enabled interests take you, getting online during your flight is just as easy as using Wi-Fi at a hotel. The only real difference is some Web sites may be blocked to preserve bandwidth throughout the aircraft and ensure a better experience for everyone on board. For more information about the service, please visit www.malindoair.com prior to your flight, or check the information card in the seat back pocket in front of you during your flight.

IN-FLIGHT HIGH FLYER

Life of a Cabin Crew Meet Malindo Air’s Senior Flight Attendant, Kogilavani Jnanasikhary and her exciting life as a high flyer.

Flight attendants are part of the crème de la crème of the service industry as they undergo intense training to be able to assist passengers and be ready to act in case of any emergencies onboard an aircraft. And as part of the elites, they are treated to amazing work perks like getting to travel around the world and sample different cultures in places they fly to. And that’s exactly what Malindo Air’s Senior Flight Attendant, Kogilavani Jnanasikhary has experienced throughout her career as a flight attendant and she shares her stories with us. What brought you into this line of work? I wanted to try something new after working in the banking line for almost four years, so I made a drastic change in career and joined the aviation industry as a flight attendant. What do you love most about your job? To be honest I love everything about my job, especially waking up in different cities and meeting different people with interesting stories. I constantly wonder how I 48 | MALINDOMAG

got to this wonderful point in my life. I get to fly on different routes with different set of crews every time, which is something very extraordinary to me. I get to try food from the different countries that I’ve travelled to. I love taking care of the passengers and their safety while giving them the best hospitality. How has your job affected your lifestyle? I get to travel the world and I think that’s the biggest change. When you have such an amazing job, there will be small sacrifices here and there. Due to the job, I spend most of my time in the aircraft and consequently I live in my own world. Sometimes I won’t have much time to catch up with my family, friends and love life. However, I am glad I have such understanding people in my life. The timings of my loved ones and mine will clash, as when they leave for work, I’ll be returning home. I sleep in the morning instead of night and I have learnt to adopt the lifestyle as a flight attendant. When you have passion for the job, then these troubles are easily overcome.

biodata Name: Kogilavani Jnanasikhary Position Held: Senior Flight Attendant Hometown: Kuala Lumpur Education: Diploma Human Resource Management, presently doing part time degree Hobbies: Shopping, traveling, baking, cooking, reading and watching movies

IN-FLIGHT HIGH FLYER

Do you have any funny moments to share? Months ago I was on duty for a Bali flight. Once the flight landed, all the passengers disembarked, but two passengers remained in the aircraft. One of them, a man, rushed in after he had left, claiming that he had left his hat in the aircraft. One of the flight attendants started looking for his hat. The last passenger on the aircraft approached him, “Is this the hat you are looking for? It was nice so I took it and wore it.” Everyone started to laugh. The man returned the hat back to the owner. What do you like about Malindo Air? I would say the unity in the company is very well built. Everyone works as a team, and there’s a comfortable working environment with understanding colleagues. Everyone here works hard to give excellent service to the passengers and it’s great to be a part of that. Which destination remains fresh in your mind? I would say New Delhi, because it’s a place where everything is priced very low. I love to shop there as you can get all kinds of things like Indian costumes and accessories such as earrings and statement necklaces, as well as home decoration items like table runners and pillow covers, which are fashionable and up to date. I love visiting their historical places as well. North Indian food is also very delightful. Any advice you’d like to give passengers about flying? Always follow the flight attendants’ instructions, and please pay attention to the announcements. Also read the safety information card in front of your seat pocket. Switch off all portable electronic devices during take-off and landing as it can interfere with the aircraft navigation system. MALINDOMAG | 49
