he start of every New Year brings with it the chance to make a new beginning. Part

of the excitement that accompanies every January is the optimism that starting over is possible and the belief that new beginnings can create fresh and positive outcomes. As 2017 has finally dawned, it is time to discover what the year of Fire Rooster has for this coming Chinese New Year. According to ancient Chinese astrology, 2017 is subject to the element Fire in its form of Yin, which expresses the warmth and inner vision, the importance of love and family relationships. The Chinese assign the Rooster as a proverbial mascot to the five virtues – civil responsibility, marital fidelity, courage, kindness and confidence. People born in a Year of the Rooster are believed to make good achievements in their career this year if they take the initiative. They will turn calamities into blessings and get good outcomes from misfortunate if they do everything carefully in the first and second Chinese lunar months. Below are the predictions for people born in other animal year and what is in store for them in this year of Fire Rooster. The natives of the year of the Rat are going to enjoy many happy events, including financial success and the natives of the year of the Ox will also enjoy unexpected success and unforeseen events.

Those born in the year of the Tiger will not lack anything, enjoying a special astral protection and devoted friends that will come to their help in the last minute. The year of the Fire Rooster will be full of positive events and good news, career progress and profitable businesses for those born in the year of the Dragon. During this year, the Snake natives are going to stand out professionally and be promoted. For the Horse natives, this is going to be a good year, with personal and financial achievements, but unbalances and career changes could come across. This is why they could get irritable and mischievous. The year 2017 brings the Goat natives higher expense than they can save for, which will also lead to problems with the family and the loved ones, as they are going to try to temper down the Goat. For the Monkey, the year is going to be really good, especially from a romantic point of view. The natives of the year of the Rooster will easily solve all the problems that are going to come up, as they will receive support from powerful and influential people. It is going to be harder for the natives of the sign of the Cat (Rabbit), as the year 2017 will bring them many difficulties and tensions regarding material aspects. For the Boar, the year of the Fire Rooster is going to be a busy and tense year. There are going to be financial or professional problems and they will require special

patience and tenacity in order to be solved. An average year for the Dog natives, as some unexpected problems on the health and romantic levels might show up. Source: http://www.chinesehoroscope-2017.com

Chinese around the world celebrate Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year (CNY) which begins on January 28 and represents a new dawn and awakening and will be marked by success as a result of hard work and patience. It begins on the first day of the first lunar and ends on the 15th day of the lunar month as the Festival of Lanterns. All types of lanterns are lit throughout the streets and children usually walk around their neighbourhood carrying all kinds of lantern. It starts with the first new moon of each calendar year and ends on the full moon. The main traditional celebrations of the festival include significant reunion dinner with family, giving red envelopes (angpow) filled with money, lighting up firecrackers and fireworks, adorning new clothes and putting up CNY decorations. CNY is a time for families to be together. Wherever they are, people come home to celebrate the festival with their families. The much anticipated New Year’s Eve dinner, is believed to be the

most important meal of the year. Big families of several generations sit around round tables and enjoy the food and quality time catching up among family members. Many cultural activities are also organised during the festival. Rural areas and small towns retain more traditional cel ebrations th an the cities, such as setting off firecrackers, worshiping ancestors and witnessing dragon or lion dances. Firecrackers are an important el ement of the festival and are traditionall y l et off to frighten away ghosts so the New Year is auspicious. Legend has it that long ago there was a monster that terrorised the people, however, it was afraid of loud noises, bright lights and the colour red. At midnight on the last day of the old year, these things are used to frighten away the monster for the whole year. Food is an integral part of 10 | MALINDOMAG

Chinese culture and certain dishes are eaten during the Chinese New Year for their symbolic meaning. Lucky food is served during the 16day of festive season, especially New Year’s Eve, which is believed to bring good luck for the coming year. The auspicious symbolism of these foods is based on their pronunciations or appearance. Not only do the dishes matter, but also the preparation, and ways of serving and consuming the food. The most common Chinese New Year foods includes dumplings, fish, spring rolls, and niangao (glutinous rice cake). Other food eaten during the festive time is longevity noodles which symbolises a wish for longevity. Their length and unsevered preparation are also symbolic of the person’s life. They are longer than normal noodles and uncut, either fried and served on a plate, or boiled and served in a bowl with the broth.

There are certain fruits eaten during the Chinese New Year period, such as tangerines, oranges, and pomeloes. They are selected as they are particularly round and “golden” in colour, symbolising fullness and wealth, but more obviously for the lucky sound they bring when spoken. Moving on to fashion, the qip ao, or cheongsam, which is known for its high collar and fitting like dress, emerges once a year as the traditional outfit to don for the CNY celebration. Originating from a type of Manchurian female garment, the cheongsam made fashionable by socialites and upper class women in Shanghai. It is usually made from satin brocade, silk or cotton, and some are beautifully embroidered. Most cheongsams are made to be body-hugging outfit, designed with mandarin collar, fitted waist, Chinese knotted buttons and hemmed slits on two sides.

Malaysia While each country may celebrate CNY in an almost similar way, the concept of open house is normally practiced in Malaysia where the homes are open for friends and family to visit, regardless of race and religion. Just like any other festival in Malaysia, CNY is basically the time of the year to get together with family and friends Penang is a great place to visit during CNY. There are many beautiful temples in Georgetown like Kek Lok Si Temple where at night millions of colorful lamps transform the whole area to a beautiful scenery. The island is also known for their culinary delights of local fares. A tradition which is practiced in Malaysia is having Yee Sang; a special dish that is only served during the festival. Yee Sang contains many different vegetables together with other ingredients like salmon or chicken. Once ready people will toss the shredded bits into the air by only using their chop sticks. It is very important that it is all tossed really high into the air as it reflects the amount of good luck, health and prosperity they will receive. of upholding her Sarawakian roots. When she was 28, she signed up for a six-month fashion course in London because she got bored of being a housewife and she was already a mother of two by then. Determined to follow her passion, she started her fashion business after she returned from London. While she confessed Kuala Lumpur (KL) was a good place to start her business, she also admitted the city has not influenced her designs much. She was still trying

to figure out the DNA of KL and she admitted that she could not think of anything except the twin towers unlike her Sarawakian roots. The designer, known for fusing urban with ethnic motifs in bold colour combinations, said she incorporated vibrant, natural elements in all her creations. She got her first break in the fashion industry when she was first approached by her friend interested in letting her showroom/ workshop go. The famous designer took the opportunity to pursue her

In 1985, with Malaysia going through a financial crisis, armed with her passion in fashion, and a not- too- focused business plan, the designer had to work hard in order to keep 30 people under her wing employed before knowing how to make smart partnerships and making her company successful. ravelling to a foreign city is both enjoyable and thrilling, but for those who just love shopping, Taipei, Taiwan is just the place for you. This is one destination full of impressive night markets, upscale boutiques and local outlets. Taipei is haven for fashionistas and vacationers hoping for the best purchases. One can easily shop for designer brands to local items that reflect the city’s unique and vibrant culture. The historical districts in west and central Taipei have many small stores lining the bustling, narrow streets, especially around the main station. Eastern Taipei has more open spaces and features shopping malls and large department stores. A number of these can also be found in the cosmopolitan Xinyi district, which is home to Taipei 101. Nearly all of the high-end designer labels are found in shopping malls, which includes the American-styled

Breeze Centre, the 19-floor Core Pacific City and Dayeh Takashimaya, which has a courtyard aquarium. Most shops open mid-morning at about 10 am and close at 9pm. Core Pacific and the Eslite Mall in Dunhua South Road are open 24-hours. Taipei is also home to dozens of markets where vendors sell special products at discounted prices. For instance, the Jade Market is located at the south end Zhongxiao East Road, and is one of the largest jade markets in all of Asia. There is also a huge wholesale clothing market, where vendors offer discounted clothing in large amounts, in the Wufenpu area of the Songshan District. Visiting a night market is a quintessential Taiwanese experience and a popular leisure activity. Held outdoors, the endless food stalls, game arcades and trinket peddlers create a carnival atmosphere. While they are not known for good quality

products, bargains are easy to find. Night markets are more than a shopping destination; they are an entire cultural experience that reveals much of the city’s hidden and traditional character. As the sun sets, thousands of stalls open to sell everything from pets to do-ityourself tools and paper fans. Some of the most popular markets are Shilin Night Market which has been open since 1899, the Raohe Street Night Market and Snake Alley, where patrons can watch snake handlers or, for the brave, try snake meat. Sometimes, though, what you really want is something a little bit special - a souvenir you can only procure in Taipei, and for that, you should keep a look out for jade, Buddhist items and wooden crafts, all of which are local specialities in Taiwan. VOYAGE TAIPEI, TAIWAN

Bellavita Shopping Mall Arguably Taipei's most decorative and fashionable shopping space. Even if you are not a shopper, the mall is worth a walk through. It has some of the finest name brand stores (Bottega Veneta, Bvlgari, Gucci, Tiffany, Tod's) as well as a variety of international and swanky boutiques. If you are into high fashion, saloons, or jewelry, then Bellavita is right up your alley. However, there are plenty of window shoppers as the mall is quite a beautiful site. It is definitely worth a walk through.

ATT 4 Fun Shopping Mall ATT 4 Fun (previously known as New York, New York) is an 11 floor shopping center located amidst the tony East District of Taipei City. ATT 4 Fun is a short walking distance from Taipei 101, Mitsukoshi and Bellavita. What makes this busy mall unique it that it does not cater to the typical high end designer labels. Instead, you can find many small to mid-brand stores and boutiques which gives shoppers a different variety of choices. On weekends, the space around the mall is usually buzzing with marketing events and showgirls demonstrating the latest products.

Xi Men Ding

Eslite Xin Yi

Xi Men Ding is a hip, busy, open aired street shopping area where Taiwan’s youth shop, eat, and just hang out. Ximending is a pedestrian mall filled with little shops, food stalls and restaurants that can meet just about anyone’s fancy. It is the old west gate area of Taipei. There’s a “movie street” full of theaters and promotions with the latest international and local films. “America Street” is known for its second hand clothing shops. But mostly, Ximending is a place to stroll around away an afternoon and evening amongst a bustling urban landscape.

For those who love all things printed, Eslite is the place to go. This 24-hour bookstore is located in the heart of the city, in the Xin Yi area near Taipei 101. With a collection of over a million books, this massive 8-storey store is the biggest in the country. Within this mega bookstore you will find a Japanese bookstore, arts bookstore, a children's bookstore and children's discovery museum, a theme restaurant for speeches and activities.

Guanghua Market The largest electronics and computer shopping centre in Taiwan, Guanghua market consists of a main six-story building, but also encompasses a lot of spillover stalls in the surrounding alleyways. This mind-boggling array of electronics is electronic heaven for the tech heads. If you cannot find it here, it probably does not exist. Remember, prices are negotiable, so be sure to shop around, and if you do not like the price they quote you, haggle it down.

East Metro Mall This is a gigantic mall all underground between Zhongxiao Fuxing station to Zhongxiao Dunhua station. You might find shopping here can be cheaper than some night markets. Think cheap but comfy shoes. There are street performers ready to entertain the shoppers, boutiques selling all kind of things and adorable knick-knacks on bargain. Its location next to two MRT stations makes it extremel y easy to get to as well.

A

mix of fresh air, refreshing sunshine and a dose of “vitamin sea” are among the common requirements for many people planning for a well-deserved holiday. While exotic islands in Caribbean sounds like a perfect match for most Asians, but closer to home there are many destinations within South East Asia that are equally attractive and deserves to be in the list of a perfect getaway destination. One of it is the district of Tejakula in North of Bali, Indonesia. A journey up north to Tejakula from the airport takes about 4 hours along small yet scenic roads passing through familiar tourist sites of Ubud and Kintamani. Thankfully, the beautiful scenes of paddy fields and ma jestic Balinese mountains allow the journey to be more bearable. Upon entering the boundaries of Tejakula, the scenery gradually transitions into a beautiful untouched fishing village, a contrast to the busy and touristy settings of southern Bali.

Despite the absence of large hotel chains, finding a place to stay in Tejakula is quite easy thanks to the availability of family-run homestays, boutique hotels and full-board SPA resorts. While the number of visitors is increasing each year, this part of Bali remains less-developed which would guarantee a quiet holiday even when most of the rooms in the area are occupied. With such beautiful and balmy settings, activities in Tejakula are mainly designed for visitors to attain rejuvenation and renewal, or simply some relaxing time with family and friends. Spa and yoga sessions are top items on many visitors’ checklist. A session of full traditional Balinese massage is a must as these ancient treatment techniques are passed from generation to generation and has proven to be effective in providing relaxation, improving circulation and re-energizing the body. Thanks to places like Tejaluka, Bali has long become yogi’s preferred destination in the region.

VOYAGE BALI, INDONESIA

At beachfront gardens that offer a natural setting in tune with the surrounding environment, it is common to see individuals and groups enjoying their yoga routines. For those who love visiting unspoilt nature, there are few attractions around Tejakula that are not-to-bemissed. Bali is known for its scenic golden sand beaches but this part of the Island provides something equally exciting, a long stretch of black sand beaches that remain pristine up till today. Most of the beach goers are locals who enjoy both the view and healing benefits of the black sand. It is a great place to blend in with locals by simply engaging on a casual conversation over a cup of Balinese coffee or even by joining the local kids in their game of beach football. Another popular activity among visitors is enjoying the sea and sunrise view from a Jukong, a traditional Balinese boat. On-board this little but stable boats, it is possible to have a 360 degrees view of beautiful nature surrounding Tejakula. Mount Batur, the black sand beach and endless view of Bali Sea complements the view of the sun coming out on the same side as Mount Rinjani which is all the way in Lombok. As Tejakula is outside the mainstream tourist radar, it is normal to be the only jukong out there enjoying all these amazing sights early in the morning. There is, however, a pleasant

surprise when you are cruising quietly absorbing the majestic surrounding views. The same area is also a known route for dolphins and for lucky visitors the experience of being surrounded by schools of playful dolphins in their natural habitat will definitely be the highlight of a trip. As the sun sets, the partying and nightlife in Kuta starts while areas like Tejakula will start to settle down into a quiet evening. This is the time of the day to discover another magical element Tejakula has to offer, a clear night sky full of stars.

Pollution-free skies and a noiseless ambience create a serene setting for stargazing. One would just need to look up to enjoy this breath-taking sight throughout the night. Planning a leisurely trip to Sri Lanka may make you think about either its popular palm-fringed coastline resorts, the eclectic mix of architecture of the famous Gangaramaya Temple or the endangered Sri Lankan leopard at Yala National Park. What you may also choose to do, is to collect a couple of birdies at one of South East Asia’s finest links-style golf course, The Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) located close by to other attractions as well. They say only mad dogs and Englishman go out in the midday sun and that is exactly what a group of audacious British colonists did in 1879 by introducing golf to the British occupied Ceylon by setting up the RCGC. This premier 18-hole layout was the third club privileged to receive the appellation “Royal” in the British Empire when King George V bestowed it in 1928. The course is played at par 71 (6’560m from the championship tee, 6303m from men’s regular and 5186 from ladies tee) and has unique features that may require the same audaciousness as its founders. Make your mark on this flat course with tight fairways that will give a reasonably good golfer a run for his/her money with a large number of water bodies, well-guarded bunkers and mature tree lines. The club also takes pride in preserving the natural habitat of its rich flora and fauna which includes a myriad of bird species. Some 80 species of birds have been listed on their website and apparently, the 13th hole is the best place to catch some of these ornithological wonders. Practicing at the club can be done either at their 20-bay covered driving range, at the putting green or at the pitching green. The clubhouse has excellent dining facilities that has garnered the attention of trip advisor reviewers. The Café on the 8th is known for its spectacular view of the 8th fairway and the 8th Green where one can watch the club’s resident birds and wildlife as they relax with a glass of wine or orange juice. Take a trip back to the colonial times at the cosy and well-stocked Guv’nors bar where history comes alive with lists of past captains and presidents on their archival wall. 26 | MALINDOMAG

Most of the right side of the clubhouse is taken up by the Coffee Shop veranda which is in view of the 1st, 8th and 18th fairways of the golf course. Have a Western breakfast in the morning proceeding to fried hendella (small fish like anchovy) for lunch and finish off with a deviled beef of chicken for dinner. Friday nights are set for barbeques while Wednesdays hosts a traditional “Hopper Night” where great local style curries and crispy coconut milk infused hoppers are served. Other facilities at the club include a pro-shop where clubs can be hired, lockers and changing rooms for visitors. The course is known to be extremely busy with approximately 75,000 plus rounds per annum has been recorded. Although it is a members club run by committees, it is open to visitors. The club currently boasts about 3000 members. A reservation is a must and caddies are compulsory. The club has a strict policy on attire decorum where men must wear collars and decent shorts or trousers while women are expected to always dress decently. Green fees can run anywhere from USD70 to USD85 (per day) depending on the days of the week while caddie fees start from Rs.800 exclusive of tips which are highly encouraged. RCGC has a host of facilities to cater to every mood and fancy, either for a serious golfer or for visitors who simply want to treat their family and friends in exclusive and tranquil surroundings.

PASSION

a passion for Wong Yuen Mei, 40, started working in the banking line as a finance executive before discovering her passion for the fashion world. By Sharmila Vella

A

fter three years of working in the financial sector, she decided to quit and pursue her passion in the fashion industry. At that time, it was almost every girls dream to own and run their own fashion boutique. So she obtained some hands-on experience as a boutique manager and later opened her own fashion boutique with two other friends. After four years in the business, they parted ways as they each had their own different life priorities. It was during that time that she decided to start her own online fashion retail platform, which enabled her to reach not only to local but overseas shoppers as well. So she created Lovemartini. Initially she was anxious knowing that it was a big stepping stone and starting an online business is not a walk in the park. Nevertheless, she independently went on pursuing her dreams, from creating the website to sourcing products, styling models, organising photoshoots as well as handling social media marketing. There were many trials and errors along the way but it was all worth it for Mei. Lovemartini is an online women fashion boutique launched in 2010. It carries a combination of trendy street-style pieces and classic alternatives at reasonable rates. However, what motivated Mei to

get it going was the love she had for making people look confident and feel good about themselves. She could totally relate to people struggling to find appropriate outfits for them as she herself grew up not knowing trends and styles that best suited her. Subsequently, Mei decided to come up with her own style that is now turned into a clothing line modelled after what she enjoys. Mei’s goal besides providing customers with a wholesome and enjoyable buying experience, is to be able to address and solve their concerns by giving them suggestions on how they can achieve a certain look with Lovemartini’s apparel and which clothes are best suited for their personality and style. For Mei, by contributing and helping another woman feel fabulous is the best part of her job. Check out her fashion line at www. shoplovemartini.com.

Hav e Yo u r S ay

Assalamualaikum wb I would like to say many many thanks and express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to one of your staff Kamarul Idzham (M02902) for assisting me to resolve my problem. I have booked my flight (Subang - Penang for 1035am departure on 4/5 and returning to Subang on the 425pm flight on the same day. A day earlier, I received a text saying the 1035am flight was retimed to 1pm. When i went to the airport to check in, i was told that the flight is now delayed to 335pm. I was pissed off. The reason why i wanted to go back was so i could take my grandparents to come to KL. if i were to take the 335pm flight to PG, i would miss the return flight. Ms Yann at the check in counter called Mr Idzham and he spoke to me about my problem and tried to look for solutions for me. After going back and forth looking at all available options, i had to cancel my flight. I was very unhappy with this but i am very pleased with Mr idzham for making sure that my grandparents were well taken care of while they were in Penang and when they arrived here in Subang, he personally pushed my grandfather’s wheelchair and all the while keeping me updated with the status of the flight since take off until i met my grandparents. It is very rare nowadays to meet people who will go out of their way to help somebody they dont know nowadays and i am very thankful Mr Idzham was working that day. On behalf of my whole family, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to Mr Idzham for the trouble he went through to help me with my problem.

I am Datin Stella. I booked a flight from KLIA to Kuching for 15 persons to attend a wedding. When I telephoned Malindo Air to confirm the times, I was told that the timing for both the flights were changed. I was upset that Malindo Air did not inform me of the changes as I had bought connecting flights to Kota Bahru on Air Asia for my children. However, the person in charge who took my call, Ms Cecilia was a very polite person who calmed me down and helped me to change the flight times for all 15 persons. She was very friendly, patient and respectful and I am writing to congratulate you on an exemplary employee who gives a good name to Malindo Air. You need more people like Cecilia!!!!

I wish to praise the fantastic and homely treatment extended to me by your entire team during my recent flight TRV-KUL-TRV. The attitude and conduct of your team right from Ground Staff as well as Cabin Crew were commendable. I really felt at Home with a 5 Star Ambience. I'm a Frequent Flyer enjoying Platinum & Gold Tier Status in many Airlines and this may one of my best Flying Experiences so far. I really cherished every second of it. Congratulations and wishing the Malindo Airlines Team all success under your dynamic leadership!

Hi Malindo! I would like to express my gratitude on the hospitality by one of your Customer Service Officers in Kuching International Airport, Miss Mimi. She has given me an excellent customer service, very calm and always smiling. My worries on my retimed schedule has been managed carefully by her. Please post my appreciation to the top management so that this credit of hers could be seen as a motivation to other staff and to further strengthen the comradeship between Malindo and it's customers. Congratulations, Malindo!

amed for its Chinese Cuisine, Chynna at Hilton Kuala Lumpur is set in Tang style grandeur that feels like being transported to an ancient regal Chinese dining environment. The restaurant is beautifully designed in wood panels that are engraved with Chinese characters, raised red silk lanterns giving a scarlet glow over the tables, heavy dragon-shaped silver spoons and hand-painted chinaware on the tables. The atmosphere in Chynna’s main dining room provides for an eager anticipation of what is to come. From a replica of Tang Dynasty Ancestral Hall to the portraits of emperors by the walls greeting you as you are ushered to your table by the service staff dressed in cheongsam, (Chinese traditional outfit) diners can already expect theatrics to complement the food. As guests flip through the extensive menu consisting of an eclectic mix

of Cantonese and Shanghainese cuisine, the resident, aptly-dressed tea master will acrobatically pour you a specially brewed 8-Treasure Welcome Tea through a metre-long spout from his kettle. The Tea Master has become one of the signatures of Chynna, as has Chef Lam Hock Hin, the executive Chef of Chynna. While Chef Lam works with a culinary palate confined to Chinese ingredients, a flip through the menu will indicate that Lam absorbs different food cultures and preparations and attempts to revolutionise Chinese cuisine. Chef Lam has come up with a

seven course meal this Chinese New Year at RM298 per person. Using only premium ingredients, it starts with traditional Norwegian salmon lao sang followed by braised vegetarian fin soup with Shanghai style crab meat and fish maw soup followed by freshly steamed wild patin buah fish with salted fish and touchu, chili and congee broth. The next dish is abalone cube with sea cucumber and mushrooms in abalone sauce followed by stir fried Korean pear with vegetarian meats and sea moss. The meals are not only exclusive and different but cooked with a variety of flavours in mind. The sixth dish is the stir fried fragrant rice with chicken sausage and char siew wrapped with lotus leaf and finally for dessert, the restaurant serves chilled carol weed with ginseng and wolfberry. A nice sweet touch to the meal. If any of the dish is not favourable, guests can also customise their dishes for a different price. There is a variety of Yee Sang dishes to choose from. They have the Year of Rooster Lao Sang which has chicken and fresh fruits priced at RM138 for half portion and RM248 for full portion.
