The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. In 2007, it was declared a winner of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The Taj Mahal is the best-known building in the world and arguably the most beautiful. The architecture is sublime but it is the story that the stones embody that draws seven million visitors each year. It is a love story that started with Maharajah Shah Jahan spotting Mumtaz Mahal at the marketplace in his royal complex. It was love at first sight and he quickly made her his third wife. Mumtaz travelled with Shah Jahan throughout India as his chief companion and beloved advisor. After bearing him 14 children, Mumtaz died, leaving the Maharajah devastated. He then decided to build her an everlasting memorial and resting place. Taking inspiration from its detailed description of Heaven, Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal. To ensure that no other living structure would ever rival the beauty of the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan made an agreement with the building’s artists. In exchange for a hefty payment, they would not create anymore art or design in their lifetime. The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage”. Described by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as “the teardrop on the cheek of time”, it is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India’s rich history. A must visit place just to appreciate the beauty and the amazing architecture built in that era.

The jump height from Macau Tower is unprecedented in the world of bungee jumping. In order to make it a reality, a 2nd-generation sphere-shaped cord was developed to equalise weight dispersal along the length of the cord, in addition to a custom-designed recovery system and guide cables. Be among the first to experience this advancement in bungeejumping technology, which will eventually enable jumps from any large building or structure in the world. D

ANCE MAESTRO, Datuk Ramli Ibrahim is well known in captivating his audience with his talented performances and choreography for almost three decades. Ramli has not only nurtured Indian classical dance but also contemporary modern dance in Malaysia. He brings past, present and future on the stage with audacity and shows that culture is meant to be shared, regardless of faith or nationality. As artistic director of Sutra Dance Theater and chairman of Sutra Foundation, Ramli has not only taught dance to generations in Malaysia but also created awareness of culture through the language of dance in many parts of the world. So it is of no surprise that he received a Fulbright Distinguished Artist Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, three Lifetime Achievement Awards from prestigious organizations in both

Malaysia and India, but has also been acknowledged as a ‘Living Heritage’ by the Government of Malaysia. As a frequent traveller to other countries to perform his dance, Ramli has become a fan of Malindo Air. “I like the space and the human element that Malindo offers. It is comfortable and I always have a smooth journey to my destination,” said Ramli in a recent interview with MalindoMag. Sutra Foundation itself has become an important part of the art world of Malaysia. It strives to develop the breadth and depth of Malaysian arts through stimulating the creative spirit of cross-cultural Malaysia. Various cultures come together here to forge a unique ‘sutra’ bond that fosters a universal yet distinctively Malaysian interpretation of the arts. In 2014, Ramli started the Dance Outreach program in three out-of-major

town areas that offers opportunity to children and teenagers (from age 6 to 15 years old) to train in dance. “Youths of these areas are insufficiently exposed to life’s empowering standards as they grow in environments which are normally saturated with commercialism and confusing values,” said Ramli. The young dancers of Sutra Dance Outreach Program started odissi and are students of SJK(Tamil) Kajang & Ladang Sg Choh. The main objective is to provide the best teaching methods and early exposure to the exciting and creative world of Indian dance. Through the programme, we hope to develop their love for timeless traditional values and, eventually, themselves, be the cultural bridges for the communities. Simultaneously, Sutra is also keen to discover new dance talents outside of Kuala Lumpur. JULY 2 017 | M ALIND OM AG | 17

BREATHTAKING Cameron Highlands E

scape the heat and bustle of Kuala Lumpur (KL) to a picturesque hill-station about 250 kilometers north of KL. A threehour drive from KL will take you to Cameron Highlands. The exotic charm of this hill resort was first discovered by a British surveyor, William Cameron, in 1885. Now Cameron Highlands has become a mystic place steeped in natural beauty that offers an ecosystem that combines tropical flora and fauna with those that thrive in cooler climate. The richness and fertility of the mountain slopes made the British planters choose this area to grow tea and agricultural produce. Even today, the hill station retains the charm and glory of an English Village. Cameron Highlands is much favored for its breathtaking scenery, comprising majestic mountain peaks, soothing mountain air, stunning waterfalls, incredible tea plantations, vast stretches of strawberry and other fruit farms, and beautiful flower gardens. For tourist, the appeal of Cameron Highlands is much the same as it was for those homesick colonials: invigorating walks in rolling hills, rounds of golf and leisurely afternoon teas and scones in the pleasantly cool climate. There are two main towns within Cameron Highlands; Tanah Rata and Brinchang. Both have a variety

of hotels and guesthouses but Tanah Rata has the most and is the prime attraction for tourists.

Visit A Tea Plantation The Cameron valley tea plantation sits amidst rolling hills and valleys with narrow paths meandering down from its quaint cafe into the emerald green fields. Enjoy the unique experience of sitting inside the gardens and sipping a cup of their very own tea. They also serve freshly baked scones with clotted cream and home-made strawberry jam. Besides that, there are also an assortment of other homemade cakes, snacks and light meals to choose from. The tea house also sells an abundance of fruit infused and flavored teas, such as honey lemon ginger, mint and masala tea to take home as souveniers. The massive tea plantation stretches as far as the eyes can see. Everywhere you look, you see a carpet of tea bushes all in beautiful shades of green. If you take a tour there are a couple of points where you can enjoy the scenic views best.

Trek Through The Mossy Forest The Mossy Forest found high in the mountains of Cameron Highlands is JULY 2 017 | M ALIND OM AG | 19

a must-see destination. The trail is oftentimes engulfed in a thick fog and cold temperatures make hikers feel as though they are no longer in Southeast Asia. This forest is home to a wide array of strange and interesting flora, including the pitcher plant, a brightly colored carnivorous plant. The trail is both slippery and steep and visitors are encouraged to explore this area on a guided tour as opposed to taking on the trail themselves.

The Strawberry Farm Cameron Highlands has many strawberry farms. The strawberries are delicious, and they grow in this area all year round. The taste of the local strawberry is both sweet and sour. Tourist flock to these farms in hopes of devouring the juicy, delicious strawberries that are grown. Some of the strawberry fields in Cameron Highlands include Raaju Hill Strawberry Farm, Healthy Strawberry Farm and Big Red Strawberry Farm. Many of these strawberry farms give out free samples as well as serving up some delicious strawberry juices and milkshakes. Visitors can also pick their own strawberry depending on the season.

Time Tunnel Local Museum The Time Tunnel is billed as “The Local Museum”, the first memorabilia museum in Malaysia. Opened since February 2007, it’s the brainchild of

45-year-old See Kok Shan, an avid collector who believes that all that is old is gold. Situated at the basement of Kok Lim Strawberry Farm, the splitlevel unit occupies a passageway that stretches for more than 80 meters. There are more than 4,000 objects and photographs on display here. They are showcased in eight galleries covering an area of approximately 14,000 square feet.

Cameron Trinkap Bee Farm Cameron Tringkap Bee Farm is one of a few large bee farms in Cameron Highlands. Established in 1978, it is located in the small Cameron town of Tringkap, just near the Rose Valley. Visitors to the Tringkap Bee Farm gets

to view the Bee Exhibition Centre, which provides interpretation on the honey bee industry. There is also a souvenir corner selling various items as well as honeybee products. It has mini bee museum for people to learn more about the benefits and production of honey. Visitors can also buy various honey products here. Admission to the farm is free.

Butterfly Garden And Butterfly Farm Both of them are located within easy reach of the Kea Farm. They are a great place to view such rare species of butterflies as the Raja Brooke butterfly, which in turn is regarded as the national butterfly of the country.

semi-natural, man-made environment. Visitors to KL Bird Park can take the opportunity to see some of the attractions of the park such as the Egg Incubation Station and Chick Nursery. Also, step into our Bird School & Bird Gallery where our collection of bird specimens, feathers, eggs, nests and skeletons are put on display. Visitors can also

take beautiful snapshots with our stunning and friendly birds at the Photo Booth as a precious keepsake of an exciting adventure here at the bird park. In addition, you do not want to miss the KL Bird Park Bird Show, the main highlight of the day which takes place at 12.30pm and 3.30pm daily. Apart from that, do not miss the other daily bird feeding activities such as lory, hornbill, eagle, Milky Stork and ostrich feeding. KL Bird Park is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm daily including weekends and public holidays.

Malindo Air passengers are entitled to 10% savings when the boarding pass or Malindo Miles membership card is presented at KL Bird Park. For more information, contact us at 03-2272 1010 or log on to the KL Bird Park’s official website at www.klbirdpark.com. 26 | M ALIND OM AG | JULY 2 017

More than a cause Datin Aseema

A

great love for the environment and a strong desire to help underprivileged children has given Datin Aseema Singhal, who resides in Cameron Highlands, a new meaning to her life. It is unlike her to sit back in silence and witness the unfortunate conditions that overrun the lives of the children of the orang Asli community. Especially in terms of education where the high school drop-out rate is a matter of concern among the Orang Asli population of Cameron Highlands. Datin Aseema has decided to bring in willing volunteers to assist the children on a weekly basis. She also takes the initiative to organise workshops and seminars to educate the children on issues related to health and wellness . “The children give me a purpose in life and I love being with them. We get unconditional love from them and in turn we hope that they will benefit from what they learn to become better human beings in the future.” said Datin Aseema. She has also started a reading program for the children; for which she and her two friends have set up a small library in the village, here she spends most of her time teaching the children to read and write. Initially, the task to get the children interested in their work was extremely difficult, as many had short attention spans and

an adorably playful nature. However, through effective use of music, games and other fun activities, they managed to make learning a fun process for the children. Apart from that, Datin Aseema is also a strong advocate for the preservation of the environment. She is a member of (Reach) Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands , an NGO that seeks to protect and conserve the environment in Cameron Highlands. She is passionate about the cause and believes that Eco tourism and Agro tourism are the way to move forward. “Walking through this flawless environment and seeing the highland forests has made me aware of the gift of Mother Nature. Every one of us needs to take the responsibility to preserve what we have for the future to appreciate,” she added. Run by a group of volunteers, REACH strives to maintain a balance between environmental protection and development. As part of REACH’s effort in creating awareness on environmental protection, REACH organizes team building activities for corporations and organisations. These include Community Stream Investigation Activity. This is a very hands on activity comparing a clean and dirty river using simple physical chemical and biological parameters. The other activity

is forest restoration This include tree planting and nurturing trees already planted. In order to sustain these activities a small fee is

imposed. REACH welcomes small donations and sponsorships to further promote the message of environmental conservation.

Windsor Park & Golf Club

ocated on Suwintawong Road, Windsor Park & Golf Club is just about 1 hour 15 minutes from downtown Bangkok. The Golf course is designed by Ronald Fream. Windsor Park & Golf Club was chosen to host the 12th Kosaido Thailand Ladies Open Golf Championship in 1998, just four years after its official opening. A truly International event with more than 20 different nationalities competing, this was the beginning of involvement with professional golf tournaments. Windsor Park & Golf Club continues to support both professional and amateur golf at different level, now with an expanded course layout of 36 holes; it poses an increase challenge to golfers in somewhat different to the

other established three nine holes. From the Pro Tees, any 18 holes are over 6,900 yards, the Regular Tee around 6,400 yards and Par 72 for all courses. Course layout and design is both fair and addictive, wide fairways leads you to ample sized greens which then raise the challenge to your putting skills. Windsor Park & Golf Club has both a large and elegant Clubhouse that golfers utilize after their game. There is also a restaurant at the Golf Club called Chuan Chom Restaurant and it can easily accommodate up to 400 people. Open to golfers and non-golfers alike, the restaurant has a beautiful

panoramic view of the golf course and is the perfect meeting point to relax and socialize with friends while enjoying home style Asian cuisine. The restaurant is perfect for anything from holding business meetings with clients, to having a romantic date with your significant other.
