ome of the joys of travelling are to experience the different cultures and traditions, the local cuisine or even marveling the beautiful scenic places. For those who want to soak in the traditions and cultures of a country, then the holy month of Ramadan is an experience not to be missed. It is totally a different kind of experience as most eateries will be closed during the day and the streets will be nearly deserted. But do not worry, when visiting Muslim populated countries during Ramadan, this is a normal scene until evening, when everything comes alive. The holy month falls in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar year and is believed to be an opportunity for Muslims to strengthen their relationship with God. Muslims around the world abstain from smoking, drinking, eating and intimacy, during day light hours. It is not all about deprivation, but, also known to be a spiritual month, which purifies the soul and brings family and friends together. It is also the time when one feels the plight of poor people who can maybe only afford minimal food in a day.
This holy fasting month is significant, sacred and a religious time for Muslims, and while many tourists visit Muslim countries throughout the year including during Ramadan, some basic knowledge about this special tradition will help to make your experience a fascinating one. Ramadan is a good time to visit Muslim populated countries as less people travel during the month and gives the tourist an upper hand to visit interesting places at their own leisure with lesser crowd. For some, it may be a challenge to source food of their preference during the day. It is advised to have breakfast at the hotel and pack food and drinks for the day till evening or buy their desired food the night before. However, this is most likel y a need in more remote Muslim populated countries, and not in urban cities. In most countries, it is usually quiet with less activities during the day but when night falls, the city comes alive with locals bustling the food bazaars that offers a wide spread of food or meeting up with friends and relatives to break their fast together.
All sorts of delicacies will be up for grabs. Certain areas along the streets will be lined up with vendors selling an assortment of drinks to all kinds of savouries to desserts and of course main meals. As early as 5pm, people will start preparing for their first meal called iftar which is taken after nightfall. It is an enlightening time to visit Muslim countries during this time, as it gives unique insight into a country’s religious faith and culture. Taking into consideration that earlier part of the day will be quiet, the evening markets, iftar feasts and community spirit are sensational compensation and an experience to relish later part of the day. The one month reaches a climax with Eid al-Fitr or in Malaysia, it is called Hari Raya. It is the end of the fasting month and the beginning of the celebration for Muslims all over the world for a period of a month. A few days of public holiday is marked by visiting relatives and friends, going for prayers, seeking forgiveness and blessings from the elders in the family and having a feast. Muslims believe it is the time to forgive, repent and celebrate the occasion with loved ones. MALINDOMAG | 9

Just over 60 percent of Malaysia’s population are Muslim, so Ramadan has a huge impact in the country. Malaysia being a circular country, believes in preaching freedom of religion whereby Non-Muslims are not required to fast. However Muslim-run eateries will not be open until mid-afternoon, but the vibrant Ramadan bazaar (Ramadan market) which starts around 4.30pm, sells a variety of iftar sweets and savouries and are worth the wait. During this month, most companies gives the privilege for Muslims to leave an hour early as they do not take lunch breaks, hence time is permitted to prepare for their iftar. Traffic is usually busy as most people will want to reach home or their preferred destination by 6.30 or 7pm at the latest. The culture in Malaysia is to join friends or famil y members to break the fast. They start by listening to the Maghrib Adhan (call for evening prayers) before taking a drink followed by eating some dates and the rest of their meal. Breaking fast with dates, is a Ramadan tradition and has some health benefits like coverting the natural sugar of dates to give the energy required to perform 10 | MALINDOMAG
the sunset prayers and eat other food. Some Muslims recite the entire Qur’an by the end of Ramadan through special prayers known as Tarawih, which are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a section of the Qur’an is recited.
Lahore, Pakistan Ramadan is the time in Lahore where families come together and strengthen their love that binds them and communities together. Every day during the holy month, every house in the village invites the neighbours on their right for Iftar. It is like a tradition practiced from long time ago. The practice is done so nobody is left out and that gives a chance for them to be closer in celebrating Ramadan.
Sharing their food is considered an act of giving and being generous, which helps build a strong sense of family, community and belonging throughout the village. Since Ramadan is a time to do good deeds, Muslims belief that donation of “Zakat” is important and one should donate a percentage of the earnings to help the poor who are struggling with life’s necessities. During this month, people normally plan their day differently from other months in the year. Some of them do charity or even help the less fortunate. Some reflect on cleansing themselves and making changes in their life. Some actually give up bad habits. It is basically an individual journey with the maker. In Lahore, there are many prominent cultural activists, NGOs, Government and a civil society that

makes the efforts to ensure that not a soul goes hungry and thirsty. It is the time of the year, where one gives more than receiving.
An Giang Province, Vietnam In the An Giang Province, Cham people are known to celebrate Ramadan, as it is the most important festival in the year. About five hours of bus ride from Ho Chi Minh City, tourist can witness unique and colourful festival celebrated by the Muslim followers in the Mekong Delta. As all the Muslims around the world, Cham people are not allowed to eat anything from sunrise to sunset during the hol y
month of Ramadan. It is also the belief that fasting resembles how poor people live and it is a reminder to Cham people to show sympathy and concern to the people of lesser means. Moreover, fasting is a time for peopl e to train themselves to overcome physical temptation and live moderatel y. In every Cham village, there is a chancel for people to gather and pray. These chancels may be big or small based on the scale of different villages and they are all beautifull y decorated. Throughout Ramadan, there will be art performances, traditional games and community activities
like Cham singing and dancing, food festival, imitating Cham’s wedding ceremony and a boat race. It is a wonderful opportunity for tourists to explore the spiritual and religious life of locals as well as witness the sacred rituals of Cham people besides taking part in various traditional activities and savouring the cuisines.
Jakarta, Indonesia As the tradition of fasting is observed in the holy month of Ramadan in Indonesia, Muslims start fasting in the morning just before sunrise, at Imsak, and is broken at Maghrib which falls at sunset. Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and an obligation for devout Muslims. Many Indonesians also pay respects at family graves and royal cemeteries. Muslim-run restaurants remain firmly shut in daylight hours, but Christian, Chinese and Balinese businesses and facilities are open for business.

Non-Muslims are not required to participate in the fasting, but should be discreet in public areas out of respect for the fasting Muslims in Jakarta. Finding food can be difficult in remote parts of Indonesia like West Java, South Sumatra and Aceh. In addition, Indonesians commonly preach that those fasting are supposed to refrain from bad habits like lying, getting angry, using bad language as well as to be more diligent in prayers and give to charities. They popularly highlight that fasting heightens spirituality and develops self-control.
New Delhi, India In India, Ramadan begins towards the end of summer and when the rainy season begins, with fifteen hours of fasting.

After 15 years of service and finishing my contract as a Short Commission Officer, I left the service and joined Malaysia Airlines (MAS) as a Technical Crew in DHC 6 Twin Otter, Fokker 50 and B737400 aircraft. After 11 years with MAS, I joined the Flight Training School as Simulator Instructor before joining Malindo Air in June 2013 as Deputy Manager of Training & Standard Boeing 737NG. 2) How do you balance work and famil y? This is a common issue in most families. Juggling fatherhood and career is ch all enging but priority must be given to the matter th at needs the most attention. n a quaint little neighbourhood in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, lies a restaurant that is attracting all walks of life to a hearty meal that satisfies one’s palate. Named after the owner and hands-on manager Navin Karu, Vins is a twist of European cuisine. In fact, most of the food in the menu are inspired from all the travels around the world. “It is not about creating the food exactly from the various countries I visited but it is about re-inventing the cuisine. That is when the magic happens and basically how Vins was created. My passion for food was my driving force that propelled me to leave my corporate job in Shell to venture into the food industry,” says the owner, Navin. The plush restaurant and bar is helmed by Head Chefs Vic and Shamini who takes great pride in their profession. Both the Chefs are 32 | MALINDOMAG

Lamb Cutlets with Pommery Garlic Mustard
Prawn Bruschetta
The culinary experience began with a Tapas Starter of freshly-baked wholemeal bread accompanied by a variety of dips and spreads. The smorgasbord took on a journey from sweet and savoury to tart and tangy, and included truffle butter, organic feta cheese, sundried tomato, freshly crushed avocado and roasted walnuts. A favorite among the patrons is the Smoked Duck Breast paired with Caramelized Onion Compote. On the other hand, the Prawn Bruschetta with big white prawns topped with basil pesto on top a crusty Ciabatta was delightful to the palate. The tapas was drizzled with mayo that gave the flavourful taste to the dish. As for bar bites, Vins served Chicken Tikka Masala with focaccia bread. The slightly spicy and creamy chicken was tasty and light. As for the main courses, the restaurant serves Provencal Ling Cod from New Zealand. This French inspired technique called Provencal is a mixture of sourdough bread
crumps, Parmigiana, herbs and spices on a bed of smoked Mexican chipotle cream sauce, pinch potatoes, Kalamata olives, capers and fresh basil. This is an amazingly delicious dish that satisfies one’s craving for fish. Next was the Lamb Cutlets with Pommery Garlic Mustard. This is a must-try dish in the menu as the lamb was succulent and fresh. It is plated with mushroom pepper corn gravy, asparagus, mixed leaves and glazed baby potatoes. As for the desserts, Vins has a few choices to choose from. The signature dessert is the Swiss Chocolate Panna Cotta Ice Cream made from 70% pure Belgium cocoa, fold into a homemade Panna Cotta mixture and freeze to a spoon tender consistency. A mixture of sweet and bitter of the cocoa satisfies any dessert cravings. Besides that, there were three other delicious dessert to indulge. Treacle Cake Pudding, Banana Pecan Pie and Cappuccino Panna Cotta. The desserts are all created in-house and they are worth putting aside your diet and just enjoy the sweet and savoury treats. The principle at Vins is that the meal is only as good as the ingredients that goes into it. The food is wholesome, organic and sustainably produced. The Chefs take great pains to source the food from suppliers who share the same ideals. The Chefs rely on “a la minute” cooking, preparing the dishes using only the finest and freshest ingredients. All the stocks, rubs and spice mixes are prepared in house, ensuring that the meals come with no artificial flavours or preservatives. Swiss Chocolate Panna Cotta Ice Cream

FOR BOOKING CHEAp TRAVEL
The Internet has certainly speed up travel booking, but that does not mean you should book the first offer you see. Prices can vary depending on the time you book, and sometimes the cheapest option may not work out for you. Learn the five secrets to book cheap travel: 1. Book by budget In Asia, we are are fortunate to have so many great travel destinations to visit. So, do you really have to go to Europe when a short flight can take you to more places? If you want a break but not tied down to a specific country, then try searching for flights and hotels by budget rather than destination. Not only can you save money, you might also discover some hidden gems in the process. 2. Ask for a discount There is nothing worse than having a buyer’s remorse that comes from booking something only to discover that the price has dropped the next day. But what smart travelers know is that, it doesn’t have to be the end of it - call the hotel and they will sometimes offer to match the price or throw in a free meal. And if you check and there are no cancellation fees. Simply cancel and rebook at the lower price. 3. Look around Travel sites certainly makes life easier and very often save you lots of money. If you have your eyes on something from a third-party booking website, take a few seconds to check the price of the actual hotel or airline’s site. You never know, you might just stumble across a bargain. However, do read the fine prints for any hidden costs. 4. Book early This is especially important during busy periods like school holidays whereby hotels and airlines will raise prices to meet the demands, so book several months ahead to avoid last minute surprises. 5. Book late You can sometimes get great bargains a couple of days before you travel as retailers look to cut their losses on empty planes and rooms. In fact, last minute deals tend to be the most generous but before you rely on them, be warned: there is no guarantee you will even be able to make a reservation, never mind save your money. This option is better suited for travelers who can be flexible with their itinerary. MALINDOMAG | 37

I travelled by Malindo on the TRZ-KUL-TRZ route and it was a very pleasant flight. The seats are very spacious, with very good legroom and overall comfort was guranteed. I am very heavy in weight and I felt extremely comfortable in their seats. Food was a surprise because they were good! The cabin crew were good and polite despite other passengers weren’t at their best behavior. The in-flight entertainment system were of good quality. Moreover, the TRZ- KUL flight was exactly on time and check-in was quite a breeze at the TRZ airport. Overall, it was a very pleasant and comfortable journey. Prem Vijay (India)

I flew to Delhi in Business Class and I would like to commend the outstanding cabin crew for their efficiency and helpfulness. The crew were friendly enough to have a chat with us, passengers. Food was great with a complimentary Haagen Daaz that came as a surprise. They also provided us with hot towel and peanuts for snacks and drinks before departure. The premium lounge in Delhi airport was basic but comfortable and nice. The seats are comfortable for a 737. Overall, I will certainly fly Malindo Air again. R. Karamdeep (Australia)

I had a short flight from Kota Bharu to Subang and it was on time despite bad weather conditions and flooding on the East Coast few months back. The cabin crews were attentive and friendly. It was a fairly good fare for ATR flight which we landed at Subang Airport, making it convenient for people from KL downtown.

Booked my flight the night prior and it came to about RM140 for a flight from JB to Penang. The flight attendants were lovely and professional, and a snack (water and sweet biscuits) was a welcome addition (not to mention the included baggage). Opted to try Malindo over Air Asia on the last feature. Plane appeared quite new and seats were fairly comfortable. Overall, it was a good flight indeed! Stephen (Australia)
I was on flight COK-KUL-COK last week, was pretty sceptical in the beginning due to many negative reviews I came across. Nevertheless, I must say that the flight was very OK (in terms of value for money), staff were very friendly and approachable. Food was not bad either, the delay was tolerable too and no missing baggage too. I would definitely fly Malindo Air again! Subash (Malaysia)
“We wish to thank all our passengers for the generous compliments and feedback. If you would like to share your feedback with us, kindly email it to info@malindoair.com. Once again, thank you for your continuous support towards Malindo Air.” 46 / MALINDOMAG
IN-FLIGHT TRAVEL TIPS
Packing for a trip is pretty exciting, but sometimes forgetting a few travel essentials is not too ideal. Whether it is a sunny climate, adventures over mountwains or treks in the snow; these top five travel essentials should be with you wherever you go. 5. Pocket Wi-Fi Having an Internet connection in most urban cities can be a lifesaver for a lot of less savvy travelers. It could mean the difference between getting lost and wandering the streets for hours versus being able to navigate anywhere like a pro.
1. First Aid Kit While you plan for your travels, pack a travel size medical kit as well. It is a great addition to your luggage for unpleasant situations that might arise while you’re on your travel. There are ready made ones available from the pharmacy or you can assemble the essentials such as strip bandages, antiseptic wipes, anti-itch cream, pain-relief pills like Panadol, vitamins, a tweezer and others in a durable see-through case.
3. Wet Wipes When you are traveling, wet wipes are a gift from the travel gods. Use it to freshen up, clean up scrapes and scratches, wipe dirt off from your shoes, clean your hands after rummaging through trinkets at the street market and the list goes on. We recommend an antiseptic wet wipe as it cleans and sanitizes at the same time. Pharmacies such as Guardian carry a wide range of both types of wet wipes. Check out Guardian E-Store for options.
2. Neck Pillow A neck pillow is one of the must have items for every traveler. When it comes to long bus rides, trains, or planes, comfort is the key. That’s where a pillow can be helpful. Be it inflatable, filled with tensioneasing beads, polystyrene or clever memory foam, a strategically-placed cushion can make a big difference to your comfort on a journey.
4. Universal Travel Adapter Universal travel adapters are potentially among the most forgotten items of any traveler. If you are taking electrical items with you, remember to take the appropriate travel adaptor. Go for the individual country travel adaptor, or if you are travelling around, choose the adaptor set.
Lazada has a wide range of neck pillows to
