SHORT & AFFORDABLE getaways
oing on holidays may be fun and exciting, but as it turns out, it
also holds a number of more tangible benefits. In fact, even just a short weekend getaway can do wonders for your health and well-being. It can be tough to find time off from work to go on full-fledged holidays throughout the year, but a three-day weekend can help you rest and recharge in a way that will positively benefit your outlook, relationships, health and productivity. The quick getaway does not require taking a week’s worth of vacation days. It can be done over a long weekend or even just a normal two-day weekend. One can save up vacation days for those future longer trips further from home. Even a two-night trip can result in adequate recharging of the batteries. In fact, short breaks are ideal for various reasons, one being that they can be enjoyed more easily throughout the year. We all need a break from time to time, and opportunities for extended getaways might not come around as often as we would like to. That is where a short break can fit in perfectly, enabling you to go away for a few days and come back ready to take on everyday life once again. Another great reason to take a short break is that it would not cost you as much as an extended getaway. Countless people have been affected by the economic crisis, and many of them have cut holidays from their budget due to necessity. However, while a one or two-week holiday might not be financially realistic for many people during the economic slump, a two or three-day getaway might be manageable. No matter where you are going, there are plenty of simple ways to cut expenses and still enjoy the quality vacation you and your family desire. Here are some tradeoffs to make to keep your vacation on your budget.

Travel Off-Season
Pay for train travel strategically
By utilising the signup bonuses offered with airline credit cards, you can accumulate hundreds of thousands of miles each year. You also get certain perks related to travelling that will ease the travelling expenditure and your pocket. You can also use your miles to reduce your air fare.
A minor tweak in your travel plans can save a bundle, especially if you are buying tickets for a whole family. For solo travellers, choose off-peak seasons to fly to get a good bargain. Fly with stops instead of direct flights. Small changes can save you hundreds of dollars. There are many good sites to set alerts on travel sales. Be on the loop for good bargains. That means signing up to few sites and airways. One can also use Google’s flight search, which allows you to browse the cheapest fares to anywhere in the world from your home airport.
Travel just before or after peak season. Prices are normally low and shops and restaurants are usually open and happy to see tourists. Most importantly, things are also cheaper during off peak season to encourage tourism.
Think Outside The Box
Why are the most popular destinations so expensive? Because everyone goes there. Look out for a country that many people do not flock there. There are many less expensive cities with charm and excitement. Just need to do some research online and decide a country to visit that fits your financial plan.
Skip The Chain Hotel
• Budget hotels: Small family-run hotels and guesthouses, as they are reasonable and have much more personality to them than big hotels. There are many listed on sites like Hotels.com or TripAdvisor for the best selection. Since listings are free, you will see a lot of options. • Apartment Rentals: If you are travelling with friends or family and do not need a concierge, maid service and other hotel amenities, this is the ideal accommodation option. Furnished apartment rentals have become enormously popular in recent years because they are easy to book via the Internet and they often cost half the price of a hotel on a per-person basis. Plus, you get a kitchen, allowing you to cook and reduce food costs. Great resources for this is Airbnb.com.
10 | M ALIND OM AG | JUNE 2 017
In major cities around the world, free walking tours show you the city’s highlights and teach you about the culture. You also meet cool, smart and genuinely nice people. You can also use the hospitality site Couchsurfing to connect with locals who are happy to show visitors around.
Airfare costs tend to skyrocket when reserving at the last minute. Not all aspects of travel work this way, though. Book tours late in the game and it will knock an easy 25% off your bill. No one wants to run an empty tour, so companies always scramble to fill spaces if they have not sold. The ideal time to get the best deal is a couple of weeks before your departure date. Conversely, booking ridiculously far in advance (such as a year or more) can also score a great deal. Try Go-today.com and lastminute.com to get good bargains.
If you are embarking on a tour rather than traveling point to point, consider a rail pass. When used properly, a rail pass can help you save hundreds of dollars, especially if you are taking overnight, high-speed, or long distance trains. A pass lets you pre-book your train travel with a certain number of rides or a pre-set amount of time; if used to the maximum, you will save significantly compared to buying individual tickets. In Australia, a pass can cut costs by up to 70%.

Hanoi, Vietnam Vietnam’s ancient capital city has a compact and easy-to-visit center that is a great mix of Colonial and Asian architecture. It has aged well, with the well-preserved Old Quarter, a maze of streets more than 1,000 years old set between the city’s famed Hoan Kiem Lake, the Red River and the few walls that remain of the Hanoi Citadel along with monuments and colonial architecture sitting alongside modern developments. Hanoi has not forgotten its past, as the only city in Southeast Asia with an embalmed leader on display – the body of Ho Chi Men lies preserved in a mausoleum, against his own wish to be cremated. Pretty parks, lakes, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of Hanoi, which can easily be explored by foot or taxi.

angladesh is a land of exciting mix with fascinating history, vibrant cultures, panoramic beauties of flora and fauna, hills and forests, sandy sea beaches and wildlife. Meanwhile, Dhaka the capital city of Bangladesh, is set beside the Buriganga River, at the center of national government, trade and culture. The 17th-century old city was the Mughal capital of Bengal, and many palaces and mosques remain. American architect Louis Khan’s National Parliament House complex typifies the bustling and fast-growing modern metropolis. To see Dhaka, just climb into the back of one of its myriad colourful cycle-rickshaws and the capital city’s charm will slowly reveal itself. Life flows from the boats on the Buriganga River to its unexpectedly green parks and university campuses. Mughal and British monuments speak of its history. If you go shopping in the street bazaars and markets, be ready to bargain. To get a feel for what things should cost in the local markets check prices in the western-style fixed price shops and then deduct 10%. If you prefer hassle free shopping then head to Bashundhara City, a huge shopping centre with lots of modern shops. Lalbagh Fort
The half-completed Lalbagh Fort and its well-tended gardens are an excuse to escape Old Dhaka’s hustle and bustle for an hour or so. The fort is particularly atmospheric in the early morning light. Construction began in 1677 under the direction of Prince Mohammed Azam, Emperor Aurangzeb's third son, although he handed it to Shaista Khan for completion. However, the death of Khan’s daughter, Pari Bibi (Fair Lady), was considered such a bad omen that the fort was never completed. Three architectural monuments within the complex were finished: the Mausoleum of Pari Bibi, the Diwan, or Hall of Audience and the three-domed Quilla Mosque. The only monument visitors are allowed is the Diwan, an elegant two-storey structure containing a small but excellent museum of Mughal miniature paintings, coins, carpets and calligraphy, along with swords and firearms. In the same building, a massive arched doorway leads to the hammam (bathhouse).

Dating from 1872, the must-see Pink Palace was built on the site of an old French factory by Nawab Abdul Ghani, the city’s wealthiest zamindar (landowner). Some 16 years after the palace’s construction, it was damaged by a tornado, then altered during restoration, becoming even grander than before. After the death of the nawab (prince) and his son, the family fortune was dispersed and the palace eventually fell into disrepair. It was saved from oblivion by massive restoration in the late 1980s, aided by photos of each of the 23 rooms, taken during the high point of the palace’s history. The photos are still on display, as are various family portraits and the skull of Nawab Abdul Ghani’s favourite elephant, Feroz Jung.

although searching for it among the high-walled, pinched alleyways of this part of the city can be a challenge. Bara Katra, once a palace of monumental dimensions, was built in 1644 and now has a street running through its arched entrance. To find Bara Katra, walk west along Water Works Rd, then turn left down the alley beside a blue-and-white, mosaic-tiled mosque.
Botanical Garden
The shady, tranquil botanical gardens, stretch over 40 hectares and contain over 1000 species of local and foreign plants, as well as lots of birdlife that flock to its several lakes and ponds (particularly in winter). Some way from the centre of Dhaka, it is a nice respite from the city’s mass of humanity. In the distance you will be able to see the Turag River.
Sixty Dome Mosque
It is widely considered to be one of the most impressive Muslim structures in Bangladesh, if not the entire Indian subcontinent, the Sixty Dome Mosque in Bagerhat is a major tourist attraction in the area, forming part of the cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat. The Sixty Dome Mosque, which is also referred to as Shait Gumbad Mosque, in fact consists of more than seventy domes, with the roof being supported in the interior by a multitude of columns and arches, forming a myriad of aisles and bays.

raving a budget escapade into the northwestern realms of Malaysia? A trip to Alor Setar could be just what you need. Situated on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Alor Setar is the capital city of Kedah and also the second largest city in the state. Lush green paddy fields are a notable feature that contrast the great mountains in the background. So if you are planning a quick trip there, here are some places you can visit:

This museum was once an old palace that housed the royal families of Kedah. If you are holidaying with your family, a trip to the museum could be an educational and enjoyable activity. Beautiful, intricate details of Kedah’s rich culture are engraved into the architecture. The museum is a well-maintained infrastructure with excellent exhibits and information on the royal regalia of the Sultan of Kedah, as well as displays of traditional Kedah weddings.

If you are heading to the Royal Museum, the State Art Gallery is just a short walk away. The building’s design reflects elements from eastern and western Roman architecture, and its interior boasts fascinating works by the local people, such as wood carving, calligraphy and painting.

Zahir Mosque Admission into Zahir Mosque is free. Situated in the center of the city, this mosque has been voted as one of the top 10 most beautiful mosques in the world, and is a spectacular sight to behold at night. It is also one of the oldest mosques in the country. Its architecture exuberates IndoSaracenic design, which draws elements from native Indo-Islamic and Indian architecture, along with Gothic and Neo-classical styles. The five black domes mark the five pillars of Islam. Photo credit: Tourism Malaysia

Alor Setar Tower This is a tourist favourite, as it offers a generous panoramic view of the city from a vantage point on the edge of town. The best time to visit would be right before sunset, so you can catch the last rays of sun beaming brilliantly upon the city, and at the break of dusk, the whole city springs to life in a myriad of colourful lights.

If you are driving along the countryside, you will see green paddy fields stretching into the horizon. That is because paddy fields are a big part of Kedah’s geographical makeup. The Kedah Paddy Museum pays homage to that through its artistic murals and drawings. It is also located beside Gunung Keriang, a beautiful recreational park northwest of the museum.

Positioned in the centre of the gym, the Camp5 Café offers the public an opportunity to enjoy both the indoor action and the expansive views. A meeting place for climbers and non-climbers, the café serves food with an emphasis on nutrition and flavour. ational Heart Institute (IJN) Foundation fundraising
chairman Datin Julini Mohd Ali is a woman on a mission to raise philanthropic support for the care of heart patients at IJN. The IJN Foundation is a non-profit organization with tax exemption status, which was established in 1995. Under the IJN Foundation’s Patient Assistance Programme, the Foundation has spent more than RM2 million each year to fund the treatment cost for poor
and needy patients, for their heart surgery, purchase of devices and heart transplant surgery. The Foundation is also the main supporter of the ongoing research done by IJN’s specialists in cardiovascular diseases. The foundation relies heavily on the generous support of corporates and kind donors to help it continue its’ philanthropic mission for the benefit of those less fortunate. “With heart disease as the leading cause of death in Malaysia, it is even more vital that funds are available, to help more patients and to save more lives,” said Datin Julini.
“It all started when my husband had a heart bypass surgery 19 years ago. It was like a wake-up call for me and felt it was time for me to give something back to the society. She was initially just helping out but the constant visit and help in raising funds had got her to be on the board of trustee at IJN. Ever since then, Datin Julini has been championing for this cause to help people who cannot afford to get treatments. “We have to collect at least RM4 milion a year in order to help the less fortunate patients,” added Datin Julini. The noble cause has given her much happiness as it is very rewarding to see patients especially some of the kids in the ward that she is
very close to healing well and on the road to recovery. Kids have a very special place in her heart as it is quite heartbreaking to see them suffering especially toddlers. She takes her time to get to know the patients and give constant encouragement to them to get better. IJN organises lots of activities and road shows to raise fund for the foundation whereby Datin Julini also takes part to spread the word. In year 2016, the foundation disbursed an amount of RM3.9 million under its Patient Assistance Programme. With the said amount, 157 patients’ surgery and treatment cost were financially assisted in which 80 were adult patients and 77 were paediatric patients.
