Malindo Turns 3! As we move on to the end of first quarter, I must say that time does fly especially with a series of auspicious events lined up one after the other. Not to mention, the encouraging network expansion of the company in a rather rapid pace. It felt like yesterday that I conveyed my year-end season’s greetings, and soon after ushered in the prosperous Chinese New Year, and finally this significant month we proudly celebrate three glorious years of Malindo Air since its inception and International Women’s Day simultaneously. In conjunction with the dual celebration, this month’s womenfriendly edition will give you an insight on Malindo’s Air’s successful milestones since its humble beginnings in March 2013. Being bestowed the torch to lead a new airline in my home country after serving the industry abroad for many years has certainly been a rewarding but challenging experience nevertheless. The eventful history in the cover story will give you a better perspective of Malindo Air, especially if you take note on the growth of our operations, product and services in a short span of time. I must take this opportunity to greatly thank the devoted Malindo Air work force, who has been a magnificent team and the spine behind the success that we have achieved today. We certainly could have not also done it without the support of international and local industry partners, tourism bodies,

and finally YOU, for believing that we will constantly serve nothing but our best! As the world celebrates women figures on March 8, I would like to express my special gratitude to the female colleagues in the company. While we get occupied in our daily routines, we sometimes overlook the undeniable sacrifices that they make, especially those juggling between work and a family unit. Aside to that, it is also a proud fact to note that the company practices gender equalities, and has a team of female pilots in a field that is commonly known to be male dominated. In the celebrations spirit this month, we are thrilled to be the sole airline to offer direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Lahore in Pakistan, beginning 3rd March. While Lahore may have been popular among business traders in the past, it is now flourished into a mystical land worth to be explored with its rich culture and traditions. So if you are looking for a beautiful and unconventional destination for your next getaway, Lahore should be the place to eye for. With this, I am pleased to say Happy 3rd Anniversary Malindo and Happy International Women’s Day! Have a pleasant journey and we sure hope to serve you on-board again soon.

MALINDO AIR IS MOVING TO KLIA ON 15 MARCH 2016

Malindo Air announced that it will be moving its jet operations to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Main terminal from KLIA2 terminal starting from 15 March 2016, in an effort to better serve its customers, and position Malindo Air for sustainable, long-term growth. All Malindo Air flights to and from Kuala Lumpur from 15 March 2016 onwards will be departing from and arriving at KLIA Main Terminal. Guests of Malindo Air are urged to make the necessary transportation and meeting point arrangements accordingly. The ATR72-600 turbo-prop operations from Lapangan Terbang Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, Subang (LTSAAS – Subang 4 | MALINDOMAG

Skypark) will not be affected by this relocation. Mr Chandran Rama Muthy, Chief Executive Officer of Malindo Air said, “We are looking forward to relocating from klia2 to KLIA Main. We hope that in the long term we will be able to contribute positively to the growth of the nation’s aviation and tourism industries, and boost the economic growth of the country further. All our guests will be notified accordingly in due time, to ensure a smooth migration.” According to Malaysia Airports, this move is in keeping with one of the strategic priorities identified in its five-year business plan (Runway to Success 2020), which is to assist airlines in increasing

their connectivity into KUL Hub and enhance the seamless inter and intra transfers at both KLIA Main and klia2 terminals. Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports said, “As Malindo Air evolves its business model from a hybrid to a full service airline, there are many premium services demanded by its business class passengers which are more available at KLIA Main. They also require a shorter turnaround time for the transfers in their cooperative engagement with the foreign carriers operating out of KLIA Main. Malaysia Airports is pleased to facilitate Malindo Air’s change in business requirements”.

Love Me in My Batik: Modern Batik Art from Malaysia and Beyond Love Me in My Batik tells the story of batik painting as a distinct modern art form that emerged in Malaysia and beyond from the 1950’s to the present day. Beginning with the pioneering batik paintings of Chuah Thean Teng, the exhibition examines how the medium was embraced and reinvented by generations of artists as they attempted to respond to different national imaginaries and contexts across successive periods in our post-war history. The exhibition takes its title from artist Joseph Tan’s 1968 collage work of the same name, a witty commentary on the cultural frenzy that batik inspired within

Malaysia as the country searched for a cultural form suited to its modern identity. Love Me in My Batik examines two intersecting stories: firstly, the emergence of batik painting in the 1950’s which was initially supported by a system of colonial patronage that actively promoted batik painting as a fine art medium and secondly, the promotion of batik by the state into a popular cultural phenomenon from the 1960’s onwards, which included the development of a batik craft industry. The exhibition will survey this uniquely Malaysian story by considering the broader entanglements between the search

for a localised artistic and creative vision, the desire for national selfhood, and the transformation of traditional art forms as they come to reflect modern aspirations. The exhibition features over thirty-nine artists, from the early Masters such as Chuah Thean Teng, Tay Mo-Leong, and Khalil Ibrahim, to contemporary artists Liew Kung Yu and Yee I-Lann. A special showcase of modern batik designs from the 1960’s – 1980’s, donated by Ra ja Fuziah to the Department of Museums Malaysia, will be one of the exhibition highlights. The exhibition will also, as an additional point of comparison, introduce a small selection of contemporary batik artworks from Indonesian artists Eko Nugroho, Bambang ‘Toko’ Witjaksono, Samuel Indratma, and Samantha Tio (Mintio) and Agung Budi Kuswara (Kabul).

alindo Air celebrates its third anniversary with a bang, with plans of upgrading to a full service airline, shifting its main hub to KLIA and buying ten more aircrafts, bringing the total to a whopping 27 aircraft in total. But what kind of impact has Malindo Air had in the last three years? A lot as it turns out. Our journey began in 2013, when we started with two Boeing aircraft, flying our inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinbalu on 22 March 2013. We became the first airline to operate Boeing 737-900ER flights in Malaysia. Our goal was to position Malaysia as a transit hub while providing full services at low fares. Since then our growth has skyrocketed; we have won two prestigious award; Airline of the Year (Passenger) 2014 by Malaysia Airports and Top Performing Airline for 2015 by Travelport. Malindo Air was presented the Airline of the Year (Passenger) 2014 by the esteemed Dato’ Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Transport Malaysia at the famed KLIA Awards. Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad presented us this award in recognition for our outstanding passenger satisfaction, international presence and service.

In the following months, The Top Performing Airline Award by Travelport, was bagged in recognition of our forward vision, international expansion and passenger services, bringing us a little closer to our dream of providing passengers with a widespread network with Malaysia as the regional hub. Is that enough? Regardless, there is more… In line with our vision, we have recently expanded our international network, especially in the later half of 2015. We now fly to over 30 destinations across 10 countries. In 2015, we introduced 10 new international routes including Perth, Ho Chi Min, Amritsar, Trivandrum, Sanya, Lahore, Hong Kong, Trichy, Colombo and Kathmandu. Along with route coverage, we have Malindo Holidays providing exclusive hotel and attraction deals to new destinations. To support our network expansion, we have been steadily introducing new aircraft to allocate new flights to the newly expanded routes to meet the ongoing demands of increasing frequency. As of January 2016, we have flown over 7.2 million satisfied customers enabling us to evolve into a full service airline with 16 Boeing 737-NG’s and 11 ATR72-600.

But what have we done specifically for you? In the last year, we have launched multiple services for our travellers. Malindo Air was the first airline in Malaysia to launch Wi Fi and roaming on board services in conjunction with Panasonic and Aeromobile on selected Boeing flights, joining ranks with global airlines such as Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific. By having connectivity on board, passengers can access emails, make telephone calls, conference calls, surf the web and stay connected throughout the cabin.

Our own MALINDOMAG was created in June 2015, an in-depth travel magazine filled with the latest trends, holiday recommendations, travelling tips and insightful articles pertaining to travel in Asia. An Executive Lounge was opened in KLIA2, providing our passengers a place to relax with comfortable furniture, light refreshment and network services. A dedicated loyalty program, Malindo Miles, was duly launched for our loyal customers to gain targeted benefits. We introduced Boarding Pass privileges, with customers getting discounts at participating merchants’ outlets by presenting our boarding pass. We also increased the passenger baggage allowance to 30 kg for economy (up to 2 pieces) and 40kg for Business Class. Malindo Air is also working closely with Tourism Malaysia to

Economy Class

provide a wide variety of attractions and holiday deals, contributing to the Malaysia’s tourism development and economic growth as attested to by Tourism Malaysia Statistics. It was found that effective advertisement and promotions helps increase the tourists arriving to Malaysia, with increased connectivity bringing tourists from all over the world. And all of this within the past year! Imagine our visions for the future‌ To provide a shorter turnaround for foreign passengers and access to premium services, Malindo Air is moving its main jet operations to KLIA main terminal from 15th March 2016 onwards. This move is aimed to provide better comforts to our passengers and establish a longterm sustainable airline growth. This marks a significant milestone for our young airline for evolving

into a full-bred first rate full service airline. These days the challenge is in adapting to the ever-changing demands of the customer. As we continue to expand, we fly more people with diverse interests to more locations, making it crucial for us to provide a high standard of service for our customers through cultural understanding, premium services, and technological advancement. We seek to identify the key hubs in the world and establish a solid presence in those regions. For the short term, we will expand our network and customer base in significant cities in Asia and the Pacific, providing full services at cost effective fares for passengers.

Women’s Day!

While celebrating three thrilling years, Malindo also would like to give special recognition to the female work force in conjunction with International Women’s Day that falls on March 8. The company is honoured to have on-board an incredible team of dedicated women from various divisions. The employment in Malindo is solely based on integrity, business minds, credibility as well as future potentials seen, where gender is not a selection factor. The company’s female employees comprise 44 per cent of the total employee workforce, whereby even in terms of male dominated profession such as pilots, equal opportunities are given.

Being a flight attendant are most visually seen, promoted and talked about for females. However, there are lucrative career options within the aviation industry that are commonly known to be a male dominated career path. In conjunction with this year’s celebration, Malindo wishes to inspire youth into exploring aviation as a meaningful career choice. There is a bright future in this industry, and what the industry needs right now are aspiring youths who are passionate and committed. (*Turn to the career segment on page 14 for an inspiring insight of one of Malindo’s female pilot)

MALINDOMAG | 13

CAREER IN AVIATION

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, this month’s edition

brings you an in-depth profile of one of Malindo Air’s female pilots. Sharifah Asrafiah Bt Sharif Ahmad better known as ‘Kak Pah’ amongst her colleagues was born on 9 March 1989 in Sandakan (Sabah) and is the youngest among three siblings. Her father is a retired Assistant Manager in a palm oil plantation and a fisherman, while her mum is an HR executive at a palm oil plantation company as well. Sharifah is a humble young lady who achieved the distinction as one of the first two female cadet pilots to be inducted on the B737 fleet on 3 February 2014. She shares with us the following story of her dream to become a pilot. Sharifah comes from an average family, where finance has always been a challenge. Her father had to sell his fishing boat, whilst her mother had plans to push her limits at the expense of her health in order for Sharifah to attend a flying school. However, she was miraculously blessed with the government’s Ma jlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) loan at the 11th hour of enrollment. Following her financial situation, she was put to a severe test with her health condition due to a slipped-disc, an injury that arose due to the sideeffects from her active athletic background in her school days. Due to numbness from waist down half-way through her pilot training, she had to be home-bound for six months, wearing a body support and under-going traditional 14 | MALINDOMAG

CAREER IN AVIATION physio-treatment weekly. She had given up, but her parents’ perseverance and will power to see her achieve her dreams helped her back on her feet. Q : What inspired you to take up flying as a career? I was inspired by my mum, and it all started during one of our daily conversations when she suggested for me to be something different – to be a pilot. My ambition was to become a doctor but my mum insisted that being a pilot would suit me better because of my inclination to athleticism. I must admit it is great to get 100% support from my family. So immediately after SPM I went to enroll at a flying school in Bintulu (GGIFA). My parents’ undivided attention and support during my most trying times further motivated me, while I was recuperating from my physical health condition. I went back to continue my training at a different flying school in Kota Bharu (APFT) as the initial flying school in Bintulu had shut down. Q: Why do you think so few women go into flying in comparison to other professions? I think the main reason is stereotyping. I must say that a lot of times it is a matter of younger girls not being made aware that it is a career option open to them. It is not the kind of thing that people talk about in schools. For example, you get young boys who say they want to be pilot or engineer, whereas the girls are not encouraged that way, but to be doctor or teacher. I would suggest for the new generation that maybe we would hold career talk and expose them different career opportunities and teaching them not to stereotype someone based on his/her career. Q: What is your biggest challenge working with male pilots? Honestly, there are not many challenges throughout my career as a female pilot. We are working in a positive environment and

‘Before becoming a pilot, I was jobless for three years and was doing several part time jobs. I was a shoe promoter for one year and was hired as a publication officer at Malindo Air’s Flight Operations Office until I was offered to be a pilot in Malindo Air’ I rarely get negative feedback or perception from my male colleagues. Whether you are a female or male pilot, we are treated equally and professionally, and among the female pilots we cooperate very well. In Malindo Air, I can say that every senior pilot communicates well with us, and are extremely supportive. I must say we work optimistically as a team. I do come across female pilots a lot now from other airlines and from our acknowledgements and greetings, I sense that we are very proud of each other.

Q: Flying is commonly known to be a male-dominated profession. Do you experience any discrimination at your work-place? Working in Malindo Air is very comforting because we are all being treated equally while with the society it is a different story. I still see most passengers are surprised when they see me coming out from the cockpit. I think a lot of passengers especially the older ones expect a pilot to be a man in his 40s or older, so when they see a young woman, they seem surprised. There was one time when I did an announcement; and a passenger asked the stewardess to confirm whether it was a female pilot. It seems like they cannot believe that we are capable of doing what a male pilot can do.

Q: What is your advice to women who aspire to take up flying as a career? My advice to those females who are interested to become a pilot is to not be scared. Being a pilot is not a dangerous job. I am posed with more danger while driving a car than when I am flying a plane. Honestly, flying an aircraft gives me so much satisfaction. Being a pilot is enjoyable especially when you are in the cockpit, the view is breathtaking. It is the best seat in the plane. My last advice to those who want to be a pilot is not to look back, but just go for it. I assure you that it is an amazing feeling to finally complete the training after all the hard work and the challenges, especially if you are one of those who come from background almost similar to mine. Q: Where do you see yourself in the future? I hope to still be in Malindo Air and to gain more experience. I would also love to be an inspiration to all the young girls out there. Hopefully the misconceived notion that muscular strength is a necessity to fly an airplane will be dispelled, and the airline will attract more and more members of the female society. I look forward to be a commander when I reach enough hours, and become an instructor in future for more exciting responsibilities.

WANDERLUST BALI

INSIDERS GUIDE TO

BALI

GOASEAN and Malindo Magazine offer an introduction to the beauty of Bali. Thanks to daily flights with Malindo Air, paradise has never been closer!

About Bali

The Indonesian island of Bali is a wondrous tropical paradise, offering up golden sandy beaches and the gentle, enticing embrace of the ocean. The beautiful coastline hosts world-leading diving and water sports activities alongside the peace and tranquillity to relax, and soak up the island’s famous welcoming atmosphere. Aside from the treasures of the coast, Bali has a rich cultural 16 | MALINDOMAG

history on offer, as well as the opportunity to explore a landscape of lush rice terraces, beautiful mountain lakes and dramatic volcanic hillsides. Explore the varied treasures of Bali and you’ll soon discover why this beautiful destination is known as The Island of the Gods.

Must Visit: Tanah Lot Temple

The 16th century Tanah Lot Temple is the most famous of the seven sea temples which decorate the coast of Bali. It is a stunning, ma jestic complex, built upon a rock which rises up from the waters of the ocean. It’s a popular attraction, particularly at sunrise and sunset,

WANDERLUST BALI

when great numbers of tourists seek to appreciate this amazing location at its most beautiful. At low tide you can walk to the temple, although only locals may enter the temple itself. At high tide you can appreciate the view of the temple, marooned by the waters from which it rises. Be aware, you do need to pay to enter the area around the temple.

Puri Tirta Empul

Tirta Empul Temple, located near Tampaksiring, is a beautiful Hindu water temple and a must see for any Bali visitor. Tirta Empul literally means ‘holy spring’, a reference to the mountain spring which has fed the waters of this spiritual place for over a thousand years. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful gardens which ring the temple, lined with masterfully carved statues, before entering through the main gates into a wonderful walled courtyard. As with any visit to a holy place it’s wise to dress respectfully, and show deference to the nature of the sacred site.

Pura Besakih

This stunning temple complex, located on the slopes of Mount Agung in the east of Bali, is the most revered, and indeed largest, of Bali’s Hindu holy sites. The site contains at least 86 interlinked temples, nestled 1,000 metres up the mountain on sex levels of terraces.

The location has served as a holy site for as long as two thousand years, and a visit will not only allow you to experience the rich, sacred history of the site but the almost mystical setting amidst breath-taking scenery of rice paddies, ma jestic mountains and tranquil mountain streams.

Mount Batur

Towering over the gorgeous island of Bali is the ma jestic wonder of Mount Batur. According to Hindu belief this is a sacred

mountain, and any visitors should ensure they show proper respect to this stunning location. At over 1,700 metres above sea level, this active volcano offers a very active challenge to those who wish to dare its slopes. However once you reach the top, soaking in the awe-inspiring views of the island around you, I think everyone will agree, it is certainly worth it!

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, or Lake Bratan Temple, is a beautiful Shivaite temple built in 1663, rising from the serene waters of Lake Bratan, in the mountains near Bedugul. Visitors cannot enter the temple itself, but the area around it offers some gorgeous scenery to add to the backdrop of this stunning holy site. Enjoy the tranquillity of the lake and the surrounding mountains while soaking in the view of this beautiful water temple.

Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple, located on the Bukit Peninsula, is another of the beautiful sites of worship for which Bali is famed. Aside from the beautiful architecture and breath-taking cliff top views, MALINDOMAG | 17

Uluwatu Temple is also famous for its monkeys. They’re adept at grabbing shiny things, so make sure and pay close attention to your bags and sunglasses! There’s a stunning cave in the cliffs beneath the temple which can be accessed via a walkway, although be sure and check the water level depending on the tides.

Festivals Galungan and Kuningan

The vibrant Galungan festival celebrates the triumph of Dharma over Adharma, of good over evil, and takes place twice a year in Bali, by the Gregorian calendar. The festival sees intricately decorated polls rising around the island, carved with images of the harvest such as rice, fruits and coconuts. It is a wonderful time to visit Bali, and one of the islands most festive times of the year. Galungan begins on February 10th and September 7th in 2016. Kuningan marks the end of Galungan, a day when the ancestors return to heaven, ending the 10-day festival period with special offerings made of yellow turmeric rice. Yellow is the colour of the god Wisnu, the protector of the Hindu holy trinity. This period sees a series of sacred dances, attended by pilgrims from throughout Bali.

Nyepi

Nyepi, the day of silence, is a Hindu celebration and public holiday in Indonesia. It is a day to appreciate the balance of nature, a quiet day which offers tranquillity in reverence to the spiritual. The day before Nyepi is a day full of lively celebration, with many towns holding vibrant celebrations in their town squares. But on the day itself, silence and reverence settles over the entire island. All shops, bars and restaurants are closed, and tourists and locals should not leave their homes or hotels for anything less than an emergency. It is a time to quietly relax and appreciate the world. Nyepi takes place on March the 9th in 2016.

The Ogoh Ogoh Parades

This vibrant, visually commanding day of festivity takes place on the eve of Nyepi throughout the island of Bali. Ogoh Ogoh statues as large as 5 metres in height fill the towns and villages, beautifully crafted effigies of gods and creatures from throughout Hindu mythology. These great creations are paraded through the streets, before being ritually burnt to symbolise spiritual cleansing.

Melasti

Melasti is a festival of symbolic cleansing, held before the day of 18 | MALINDOMAG

silence, Nyepi. Great effigies of the gods are hauled forth to the ocean, there to receive a ritual cleaning through prayer, religious offerings and bathing. The day this takes place can vary, but generally it’s around three days before Nyepi itself.

Bali Grebeg Festival

Bali Grebeg Festival takes place to celebrate the sacred Grebeg ritual, with locals painting their bodies bright green in order to banish demons and ward off evil spirits. The visually stunning festival takes place every 6 months, and can be enjoyed by visitors at Tegallalang, north of Ubud.

Sanur Village Festival

This vibrant festival takes place on and around the beautiful golden beaches of the Sanur of Southeast

Bali. This annual week-long festival brings together arts, culture, food and fun in a range of festivities to suit the whole family. Take part in action packed fitness activities, sample the local cuisine or just immerse yourself in the wonderful sights and sounds of this great festival. The 11th Sanur Village festival is set to take place on 2428 August 2016 tentatively.

Bali Spirit Festival

The annual Bali Spirit Festival is the most popular festival of its type in Southeast Asia, bringing together the pleasures of live music with the joy and freedom of yoga, dance and movement. This festival aims not simply to entertain, but to awaken the spirit within, refreshing individuals and providing positivity and harmony. The festival begins on March 29th in 2016, and runs until April 3rd.

Must See Kecak Dance

The Kecak is an entrancing, rhythmic performance and dance involving as many as 150 performers, chanting and weaving their hands in unison. Sometimes called ‘The Monkey Dance’, this stunning performance creates a wall of sound which frames the stories acted out as one by the group.

Batur Hot Springs

If you take the challenge and hike the ma jestic Mount Batur, then Batur Hot Springs are the perfect hard-earned reward to follow. These naturally fed hot springs give you a chance to relax, and let the tension go amidst the beautiful surroundings.

Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan

With all the beauty of the island of Bali itself, it’s easy to forget the region is home to many beautiful island locations. Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are two of the largest, and offer a more rustic, laidback atmosphere for tourists than is sometimes found on the main island. Tourist infrastructure can be more basic, but these are a great place to spend some time if you want to explore Bali’s other islands.

Must Eat Bebek Betutu

This iconic Balinese dish delivers all the flavour and excitement of local cuisine in one dish. Bebek betutu consists of a whole duck or chicken stuffed full of aromatic spices, then baked in tightly wrapped banana bark for up to six hours. Mouth-wateringly good!

Babi Guling

This favourite of Balinese cuisine consists of a whole, spitroasted pig, stuffed with spices and vegetable mix then slow rollcooked over a coal fire. The crisp skin is a particularly prized part of the meal, while the meat inside comes out tender, juicy and ready to be savoured. Seafood at Jimbaran Beach The restaurants at Jimbaran Bay are famed throughout the island for their amazing seafood dishes. The beachside establishments serve up freshly caught shrimp, calamari, lobster and a huge range of fish. Each restaurant whisks up their own special recipe sauces to deliver a seafood flavour sensation that’s not to be missed.

Where to Stay: Kuta

Kuta, in the southwest of Bali, is in some ways the heart of Bali tourism, the place where visitors and tourists first realised the joys of this beautiful island. It’s one of the more developed areas of the islands tourist infrastructure, and as such there are a huge number of hotels in a range of prices ready to offer affordable beachfront delights or luxury, high-class

residences depending on your budget. This is a great area of the island to enjoy the golden beaches, maybe learn to surf, or just enjoy the exciting, vibrant atmosphere of restaurants, bars and hotels.

Ubud

If you want to get away from it all, enjoy the tranquillity of central Bali in the mountains around Ubud. The guest houses, hotels and villas in this region are a perfect place to soak in the calming Bali atmosphere. Ubud has long been a destination for artists and free thinkers who want to experience a side of Bali away from the beaches, surrounded by the ma jestic mountains in the heart of this deeply spiritual island.

Lovina

If you want some quiet but some sun, sea and sand along with it, then Lovina, in the island’s north, is the place for you. Enjoy the relaxing lap of waves against the beach in this sun-drenched paradise far away from your troubles. Aside from the pleasures of the beach, there are a string of coastal villages for you to enjoy nestled in this tranquil part of Bali. A Glimpse of the

Old JB

Text & images by: Azuan A Zahdi

A mouth-watering aroma along with a lovely sight of freshly-baked bread being taken out from a coal-fired oven welcomed me to Jalan Dhoby, one part of the area commonly known as the old Johor Bahru. Just like many Gen-Y city boys and girls, it is a sight that is rather uncommon and got me pretty excited. The “old-skool” Salahuddin Bakery is just one of the many wonders of this area full with pleasant surprises. Located just minutes away from the bustling traffic of commuters crossing the border of Malaysia and Singapore, this little spot of “old JB” is fast becoming one of my favourite part of the city. A place that is home to beautiful pre-war shophouses, delicious eating places that have been enjoyed by many generations, stunning street arts and traditional

but profitable business ventures. While Jalan Dhoby is only a small part of Johor Bharu’s heritage area, it makes a perfect starting point to discover this historic heart of the city. Even until today, there are still a couple of laundry shops operating along the street which gave a rather confusing impression on the street name’s origin. One thing for sure, laundry services was the main business on this street back then. When asked, one of the customers at one of the existing laundry shop mentioned that loyalty and sentimental value goes a long way and that is why they kept coming back until today. I could relate to such sentiments the moment I went into Salahuddin Bakery also in Jalan Dhoby. A step into the 78-years old bakery transported me into

WANDERLUST JOHOR BAHRU

an era that I can only see either through my imagination or from scenes in old black and white movies. Despite that it has seen three generation of owners, this family-run bakery according to some regular customers have not changed much from the original look and feel. More importantly the taste of its bread has been consistently good along the years. In fact, it is common to see grandparents bringing their children and grandchildren to experience not only the delicious bread and pastries but to also have a glimpse of what it was like in the past. Similar to the bakery, business as usual seems to be the state for some other unique shops that I walked into. From one corner to another I went into a laidback photo studio, an old-fashioned pawn shop, a commissioner for oaths with a basic office setup and a shop specialising on mattress just to name a few. Interesting to observe how different business owners with different products could still harmoniously survive in today’s competitive landscape. The secret formula could be that one thing they have in common which is the passion to run their businesses beyond simply making profit.

Jalan Dhoby and surrounding streets are also known for its good food. For younger generations, hipster cafes starting to mushroom within the area giving second lives to some of the abandoned shophouses From delicious range of coffee to creative dessert and fusion meals, a visitor will surely find a place that suits both taste buds and crave for a perfect Instagrammoment ambience at one of these cafes. Some of the most famous ones include Roost Café, The IceCream Project and Chaiwalla & Co Container Café.

Of course, when it comes to choosing where to eat, I personally prefer places that have been around for quite some time. IT Roo Cafe and Restoran Hwa Mui fit the bill perfectly as they have been serving customers for many generations. These two restaurants are the “superstars” of Jalan Dhoby when it comes to good food. One would not leave this place without enjoying the authentic Chicken Chop, dubbed as the best in town (some say the whole country!). Despite having the identity of old JB, there have been successful efforts to enhance the area with new flavours such as modern art. Latest addition is a tastefully designed street art decorating empty walls within the area. With murals being the in-thing in many cities nationwide, this makes Jalan Dhoby and surrounding streets more appealing for youngsters making it a perfect venue for a half-day family excursion. Not only families, if you are a photographer, fan of old buildings, selfie-addict, foodie or just a random traveller, Jalan Dhoby and the old JB would be a nice addition to your itinerary. As what my Johorean better half always told me “there is more to Johor Bharu than just theme parks, outlet shopping and gateway to Singapore”.

Italian Cuisine for the Local Palate By C K Ng

started my lunch at Don’s Diner backwards. Located along Jalan 17/54 Section 17, Petaling Jaya, this yearold Italian restaurant has been making waves on Instagram with this particular dessert, aptly named Don’s Chocolate Grenade, which is a combination of vanilla ice cream, fresh fruits and cake crumbs encased in a dark chocolate shell which is smothered with hot salted caramel sauce just before serving. Don’s Diner is helmed by three self-proclaimed foodies, Azri Zahier Azmi, Zaharil Zainal and Aliyah Barakbah who collectively call themselves “The Dons”. Not content with merely serving good Italian fare, the trio made it their mission to reinterpret the cuisine for the local palate by adding little tweaks and twists to the recipes to make them unique and memorable. Fast gaining a reputation as a family-friendly culinary destination, Don’s Diner

I

is divided into three sections – the main dining area, a function room and an al-fresco section where a selection of hand-rolled cigars are available for aficionados. The restaurant has a strong retro vibe, which is not surprising since it takes inspiration from the movie The Godfather. From brick-red and gold wallpaper, solid marble tables and silver cutlery to the various black and white movie posters and knick-knacks from a bygone era, stepping into Don’s Diner would make you feel like you are in cozy, family-run Italian restaurant in 1940’s New York. Once I got my curiosity about Don’s Chocolate Grenade out of the way, I moved on to Diavola Pizza, a unique take on pizza that uses special dough inspired by a Mediterranean bread recipe, which is topped with tomato sauce, generous servings of beef salami, mozarella cheese, and, surprise surprise, pops of cili padi that provided an interesting contrast

to the soft, chewy crust. The Grilled Lamb Rack with potatoes and sautéed vegetable followed next and served with two types of condiments – mint and beetroot. The lamb rack, while charred on the outside, was slightly pink and tender on the inside and retained its juices, making each bite an absolute delight. The next dish, Linguine Ala Granchio, is what I would call a disruptor. When you read its description on the menu, the dish seemed like a standard Italian fare that you are familiar with. You could not be more wrong. The pasta dish is made by tossing linguini with sautéed crab meat, garlic, cherry tomatoes, broccoli and ladles of seafood stock that is made fresh daily in Don Diner’s kitchen. The disruption came in the form of fiery heat by the inclusion of cili padi into the dish, which provided the perfect balance to the sweet and tangy cherry tomatoes. The deep-fried

soft shell crabs on top added texture and crunch. The biggest surprise for me was Spaghetti Anatra, which was spaghetti with pan-seared smoked duck breast sautéed with onion, garlic, rocket salad and enoki mushroom. Upon the first mouthful, you will agree with me that it is a masterful combination of flavors! The smoked duck was done just right. It was crispy and fragrant yet succulent with the right amount of fat and saltiness, its smoky flavor is silky-smooth and left a pleasant aftertaste without overpowering your senses. This dish definitely deserves repeat orders the next time I am here. My lunch was capped with Mafioso Toast, a slab of oven-hot thick toast drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce and served with ice cream, berries and citrus

fruits and whipped cream. This bestseller dessert provided a lesson in contrasting texture for it was hot and cold, crunchy and soft, sweet and sour, and creamy and fresh at the same time. I polished off the dessert with an excellent cup of Americano. The house blend, I was told, is a mix of seven types of beans: five from Indonesia and one each from Latin America and Africa. The Americano was aromatic and full-bodied with nutty undertones and a pleasant, crisp bite. In fact, I would not mind coming to Don’s Dinner just to enjoy a cuppa and take in the view. In addition to soft drinks, juices, coffee and tea, Don’s Diner also offers a selection of mocktails to help you quench your thirst. So the final question remains. Did Don’s Chocolate Grenade live up to expectation?

In my opinion, this whimsical creation perfectly sums up Don’s Diner “We Serve Food You Can’t Refuse” tagline. Beyond its playful presentation lies a solid understanding of food that people like to eat, made by people who love to eat themselves. Don’s Diner (Halal) Opens from 12 noon to 11 pm (Sunday – Thursday); 12 noon to 12 am (Friday- Saturday), closes on Tuesdays. Accepts reservations and private functions. “ “

Flew for the first time from New Delhi to Kuala Lumpur recently. Liked the cost effective and efficient service! Thank you, Malindo Air! Somil Agrawal (India)

Thank you Malindo Air! You made my 5-year-old son possible to fly from Malacca to Penang with your affordable prices. What a comfortable flight experience too! Thank you for being in Malacca! M. Azril (Malaysia)

Excellent flight - flew from Subang Skypark (SZB) to Penang (PEN) using their ATR72-600. Nice checkin agent in Subang, and excellent cabin condition. The flight took one hour and they served water and fruit cake slices for that short duration of flight. Overall, it was a comfortable flight experience. Will be flying with their B737-900ER to Kuching next week and looking forward to that. M Ahmad (Malaysia)

I am writing this as a token of appreciation to two of your staff Mr. Ganesh Kumar and Mr. Surinder Ra j for assisting me. I was unable to do the online check in and I sought for help through my friend Miss Lakshimi. We tried for an hour plus and outcome was zero. Thank God she had the contact number of Mr.Ganesh whom previously had assisted her in a refund matter. The quick-thinking act of your staff has really made my life so much easier! We then got a call from Mr.Ra j, the supervisor for the Call Centre and he has settled everything which was bothering my mind and so I would like to gratitude through this email! Keep up the good job and thank you very much to Mr.Ganesh and Mr.Ra j who efficiently and professionally handled my matter. I’m a satisfied customer. Geena Yew (Malaysia)

“We wish to thank all our passengers for the generous compliments and feedback! If you would like to share your feedback with us, kindly email it to info@malindoair.com. Once again, thank you for your continuous support towards Malindo Air.” 46 / MALINDOMAG
