Welcome onboard, dear valued guest. The month of November is, without a doubt, a significant period as the year-end holiday season catches up on us, nudging for a rethink of yearly holiday plans with family and friends. While you may be looking high and low, online and offline for holiday gems across the country and abroad, look no further because Malindo Air has an extensive network on the rise that’s grown even more with Australian operations this month! Amidst preparations for the big end-year travel season, the team at Malindo Air are extremely excited about a new route this month, which will be a great extension to our network. From the 19th of this month, we will be flying 11 times weekly to Australia’s sunniest capital city – Perth! Apart from that, with opportunities that come with a young, enthusiastic full service airline, we have added quite a number of feathers to our hat. What better way to complement this expansion and end 2015 on a high note than to receive our tenth and final order of the year for Boeing 737-800 this month, bringing the total fleet size to 27. On another note, our first flight from Kuala Lumpur to Amritsar, India took off last month, a route that is exclusive to Malindo Air as no other commercial airline flies to the capital city of Punjab from Malaysia and South East Asia. This brings us to our cover story on what

the holy city can offer, beyond just a Sikh pilgrimage destination for those in search of moral or spiritual guidance. Breath-taking views and extraordinary up-close encounters with the local culture here will sweep you off your travel bug bitten feet. Just to hint you further on our route expansion, currently in our radar are Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Colombo in Sri Lanka and a certain “Pearl of the Orient” to the east. With the holiday season approaching, do not lose out on the best getaway deals to places waiting to be explored. I would suggest checking out our holiday portal Malindo Holidays at malindoholidays. com or page 44. More enhancing features are abound on our website malindoair. com as we introduce a sleeker look with refined touches and upgrades to the booking system. Other language options now include Bahasa Melayu and Chinese. The revamp was thoughtfully designed with most ideal customer preferences curated from a survey we held not too long ago. If you will notice, both Economy and Business Class all-inclusive fares are now categorised into Promo and Flexi classes, which offer a different set of privileges to fit diverse customer needs. You can expect smoother booking processes and transactions, with all-new access to your bookings to view and make booking changes all in one page. Another interesting read in this issue include our feature on Deepavali, or known as Diwali to some, a much-awaited colourful festive season for Indians all across the globe to celebrate the fittingly called “Festival of Lights”. Until the next issue, I wish you a grand experience with Malindo Air. Happy reading!

Heritage buildings left by the British colonial era still stand proudly today, while the bustling urban scene comes to life in the form of hipster cafes and tourist hotspots. Outside of

From Ipoh’s Sultan Azlan Shah Airport, Malindo Air connects internationally and locally to Singapore and Johor Bahru seven times weekly. Flights to Singapore

adventurous travellers seeking to discover hidden jewels in the global map. The one absolute must-visit landmark when you are in Amritsar is the Golden Temple. Home to the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion, the temple which is also known as the Harmandir Sahib by the locals, is a divine pilgrimage ground to seek spiritual and moral guidance. In fact, this shrine is so highly cherished that it receives more visitors than the Ta j Mahal annually, with the shrine frequently receiving more than 100,000 visitors in a week. The gold encrusted temple has unique Sikh influences in its

and history of Sikhism, while offering to show you around the temple grounds itself. Another positive thing to note about the temple complex is that it is open almost 24 hours a day, as it is only closed from 2am to 6am for regular cleaning work. If you do have the time while you are in the city, try visiting the temple twice – once during the day, and once at night time when the entire place is beautifully lit up. Early evenings are also a great time to catch a glimpse of the temple as the sun sets in the background. As you arrive at the complex, you will more likely than not be approached by street vendors

intricate architecture and it sits ma jestically in the middle of a lake called Amrit Sarovar, creating a grand reflection of its glistening image on the clear water as it welcomes visitors from near and far. Today the Golden Temple is on the pending list to be classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pure excitement to be at this holy place is infectious, and many people on the grounds will be more than happy to share with you all about their religion, customs

trying to sell you bandanas to cover your head, which is a custom to enter the premise. While it is not a bad souvenir you can get for only 10 Indian rupees, there is also a big barrel of free ones to choose from at the entrance itself. Upon arriving at the temple entrance, take off your shoes, deposit them at the subterranean building to the left of the entrance and wash your feet at the entrance before heading in. To add to the experience, there is also the Central Sikh Museum

Things to note about travelling in Amritsar

• •

• • • • • •

The best time to visit the city is during the winter season which falls between October and March. Amritsar is a city well connected by air, train and car. If travelling by train, there is a free bus service from the train station to the Golden Temple run by the temple complex’s trust. The bus service will drop you right at the accommodation booking office of the temple. However, take note that this service is on a rudimentary bus vehicle and at peak hours can get very crowded, as it is really only intended for locals and the poor who cannot afford other transportation. Hence, you are encouraged to just afford a rickshaw or taxi for approximately Rs50-100 from the station to the Golden Temple. You should remain aware and respectful of the Sikh religion anywhere near the Golden Temple complex. Inside the complex, both men and women are required to cover their heads with scarves that are widely available throughout the town, or get them for free at the entrances to the temple. Smoking and alcohol are forbidden within the complex and anywhere within sight of the temple. Lighting up a cigarette on the busy street out front will definitely attract negative attention, as will spitting near the temple. Photography is allowed on the outside ring of the holy lake, but not inside the actual temple itself. Mobile phones must be switched off inside the temple. Always carry loose change for tips or public transportation. Don’t hesitate to try the local food of the city but be careful when opting for street food and eat only at hygienic places. Also, take care not to drink tap water, try to opt for sealed bottled water. To keep monkeys at bay, do not carry food in the open. Keep emergency numbers and contacts handy in case you get lost. Never accept a ride if there is someone accompanying the driver in a taxi or rickshaw. Keep a copy of your passport and visa, separate from the original.

which is located within the same premises where visitors can browse an impressive collection of paintings and traditional Sikh artefacts in a gallery for free. As the adage echoes, “When in Rome, do what the Romans do”, a good way to discover the Amritsar locals’ way of life is to take the Village Tour. Some travel and tour agencies tailor make such tours to give tourists a taste of traditional ways of life and local culture on the countryside. Through the tour, visitors get first-hand experience at everyday routines such as milking cows using traditional Indian methods, riding on a traditional bull carts and taking the tractor across streams. For food lovers who craves lush and authentic tastes of spices and flavours, this will be an ideal destination. With the influence of North Indian cuisine, some of the most popular savouries include paneer butter masala (cottage cheese), chicken tikka with crispy butter tandoori bread, fried catfish fillets, and creamy fresh lassi, a yogurt drink best drank in mango flavour! Punjab is also very well known for its sweet delicacies and desserts, whereby they are rich 14 | MALINDOMAG

and creamy with pure ghee and milk. While the city is rich with its cultural practices, one of the other most interesting rituals is the flag lowering ceremony held at the border every evening before sunset at the Wagah border. Situated about 30 kilometres from Amritsar town, Wagah, also known as the ‘Berlin Wall of Asia’ is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan. On-lookers will be able to witness an entertaining and patriotic parade by both the countries’ soldier troops, whereby this ceremony has been some sought of a measuring instrument of the relations between both the countries over the years. Shopping in Amritsar will be a dream for fabric and embroidery lovers. While there are many market places and plazas around, the main shopping areas are Lawrence Road and the Hall Bazaar. The iconic item from Amritsar is their footwear called jutti. These hand-made shoes are embedded with fine embroidery or dazzling stone works and are normally matched with male or female traditional wear. However, they are also recognized as a

fashion statement with modern day outfits. Travellers and traders alike should take this chance to also look out for attractive carpets, bed fittings, textiles, and colourful accessories which are reasonably priced for its spectacular artwork and quality. If you are making an effort to plan your year-end holiday or even a short getaway, Amritsar will certainly be a great window for an extraordinary experience in India. Till then, happy travelling!

Getting there Malindo Air flies to Amritsar 3x weekly with departures on every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Book your flights online at www.malindoair.com. The Festival of

Lights

The festive season of Deepavali, or Diwali, which is celebrated by Indians globally, is an auspicious time that is celebrated in wondrous form and colour. by Soo Yi and Archana

L

iterally meaning “The Festival of Lights”, Deepavali is an ancient Indian festival that occurs at the end of the harvest season, on the Hindu month of Ashwayuja on the new moon. It is the biggest and brightest festival of India and signifies the symbolic victory of light over darkness. During Deepavali, Indians traditionally clean, renovate and decorate their homes and offices, believing Goddess Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity – will bless them. On Diwali night, they dress up in new clothes, celebrate with fireworks, and feast with the family and exchange gifts with loved ones. Deepavali carries the most significance to Hindus, but is also celebrated by Jains and Sikhs. Typically, the festival spans anywhere between two to five days, with different regions celebrating in different ways. While 16 | MALINDOMAG

the festival markedly differs by region, most beliefs are spread universally throughout the country. Let’s find out how each region celebrates the Festival of Lights in their unique way. North India In north India, Deepavali is celebrated as the day when Lord Rama and his wife returned from their banishment after fourteen years, after defeating the demon Raavan. Since it was a new moon night, the people of Ayodhya lit his way home and people celebrated the return of their true king. The celebration spans five days with Dhanteras starting the fiveday long festival. Dhanteras marks the birthdate of Goddess Lakshmi and vigorous cleaning commences for the five day celebrations ahead. Diyas, or brass lamps, are kept burning all night. The second day is Narakasura Chaturdashi, also known as Choti Diwali, where

WANDERLUST DEEPAVALI

pujas (prayers) are held and preparations made for the big day ahead. The third day, Diwali marks Lakshmi puja, with intense celebrations occurring throughout the country. Families meet, gifts are exchanged and great food devoured. The fourth day, Padwa, is considered sacred for married couples. Lastly, the fifth day of Bhaiyaduj, is a day when brothers and sisters unite to pray for each other’s wellbeing. South India In South India, Deepavali is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. The celebrations take two days, the day before new moon (Naraksura Chaturdashi) and the day of new moon (Deepavali Amavasya). A ritual bath is taken in the morning, with prayers, social relations and celebrations taking the rest of the day. The dark night is illuminated by lamps and at dusk, firecrackers are burst. Generally traders do not make any payments on that day in the belief that it will preserve Goddess Lakshmi at home, but new account books are opened after a prayer. In every household, cash, jewellery and an idol of the goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. Friends, neighbours and relatives are invited over and celebrations are in full swing.

Mumbai Mumbai is the city with the largest concentration of Jains in the world. Diwali has special significance in Jainism. Mahavira, the last of the Tirthankar of this era, attained nirvana on this day. According to legends, many gods were present, illuminating the darkness. Hence Diwali is a day when Jains remember Mahavira. Jains tend to avoid firecrackers during Diwali as they cause harm to living organisms. Diwali is celebrated here with an atmosphere of austerity, serenity, equity, and charity. Amritsar Amritsar, the holiest city of Sikhism also celebrates Diwali. Diwali for Sikhs marks the Bandi Chhor Divas, when Guru Har Gobind freed himself and Hindu Kings, from Fort Gwalior, prison of the Mughal emperor Jahangir, and arrived at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Ever since then, Sikhs MALINDOMAG | 17

offered special food. On the third day however, Tihar is more similar to Diwali, with prayers and lights. On the fourth day Yama, the God of Death is appeased to prevent untimely death. On the final day, brothers and sisters invite each other home and pray for their wellbeing. If you are invited to an Indian household, jump at the chance to share in their joyous celebrations. While a street view of Deepavali celebrations is beautiful, a firsthand experience of Deepavali is an unmatched experience, especially since it is a family oriented festival.

celebrate Bandi Chhorh Divas, with the annual lighting up of the iconic Golden Temple, fireworks and other festivities. Kathmandu, Nepal In Nepal, Diwali is known as Tihar and is celebrated during the same period. It also spans five days, with the first two days being distinctly different from Diwali. On the first day, cows are worshipped and given offerings, in appreciation of the food and agricultural work they have performed through the year. On the second day, dogs and all living animals are revered and

Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns Category: Cultural site Location: In Northern Thailand close to the modern city - Sukhothai. There are three parks within the site—each one a historic town. These are:

• • •

Sukhothai Historical Park in the Mueang Sukhothai District, Sukhothai Province. Si Satchanalai Historical Park in the Si Satchanalai District, Sukhothai Province. Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park in Mueang Kamphaeng Phet District, Kamphaeng Phet Province.

Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam between the 13th and 14th centuries. Within the parks, there are a vast number of monuments, including wall paintings, intricate decorative features, temple and monasteries, each illustrating the beginnings of Thai architecture - which is exceptionally distinctive from Khmer and other earlier regional styles, and is known as the Sukhothai style.

Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex Category: Natural site Location: The complex spans 230 km between Ta Phraya National Park on the Cambodian border in the east, and Khao Yai National Park in the west. The Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex is a vast tropical forest and is an absolute must-visit for any selfproclaimed nature nut that plans on visiting Thailand’s more rustic side. Within its lush, rolling hills, you’ll find a collection of crystal-like waterfalls (try and visit the Haew Suwat Waterfall), deep ravines and perhaps some of the best hiking trails in all of Thailand, along with those that call it home: an incredible 800 species of fauna, including 112 mammal species, 392 bird species and 200 reptile and amphibian species with at least one critically endangered animal—the Siamese Crocodile.

Historic City of Ayutthaya Category: Cultural site Location: The city is in the Ayutthaya province in Thailand, located in the valley of the Chao Phraya River some 76km north of Bangkok. Ayutthaya is, quite easily, one of the most beautiful historical sites in Thailand. Wats glow a golden shade of orange in the evening, while staggeringly large depictions of the Buddha sit crossed-legged in line at the Ayutthaya temple. The city was founded in 1350, and was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom (for more than 400 years), though it only really began to flourish between the 14th and 18th centuries, when it became one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas and a centre of global diplomacy and commerce.

Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries Category: Natural site Location: The sanctuaries are in Northern Thailand and run alongside the western border with Myanmar—300KM northwest of Bangkok The Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries are aesthetically beautiful to the extreme - vast and wild, expansive and dense, hilly, lush with forest and crisscrossed by a network of rivers and streams that flow into a large grassland plain. There’s a fascinating diversity of animals here, including some 120 mammals, 400 birds, 96 reptiles, 43 amphibians and 113 freshwater fish – as well as 34 internationally threatened species. The area is one of very few in Southeast Asia which are large enough to support large mammals such as elephants and tigers – both of which are found here. Aside from the flora and fauna, there are some 3,800 tribal people live within the Thung Yai sanctuary, while Huai Kha Khaeng remains uninhabited.

Ban Chiang Archaeological Site Category: Cultural site Location: Located close to the Lao border in the Udon Thani Province in in north east Thailand. Ban Chiang is widely considered to be the most important prehistoric settlement discovered in South-East Asia. The site presents the earliest evidence of farming in the region and of the manufacture and use of metals. The first scientific excavation of the site was in 1967 and uncovered a collection of red coloured pottery and skeletons that have been dated to the Neolithic age, the Iron Age and the Bronze Age. There’s now a museum at the site which houses many of these skeletons and pottery samples – which are in incredibly good condition despite many dating back some 6,000 years – and the remains of the Wat Pho Sri Nai temple.

A Feast

to the Eyes Diversity gets a new definition at The Resort Café By Soo Yi

T

aking inspiration from the Asian region’s lively food halls, packed with the hive of bustling activities and whiffs of aroma in the air, this restaurant in Bandar Sunway reminded me much of Marrakesh, plus Bollywood and oriental influences thrown in. It is by no means a plethora of just Asian influences garbled into one confusing buffet island, but one surprisingly satisfying veritable bonanza of local, Asian and Middle Eastern delights. The restaurant’s concept explored a sense of nostalgia, creating a dynamic and interactive space that mirrors the vibrancy that is Asia. The food offerings, music selections, interior design and atmosphere were spot on for a buffet spread this magnitude. 30 | MALINDOMAG

As I stepped into the restaurant, I was greeted by two voluminous octagonal-shaped towers with what looked like a chilled water mist coming out of them – for tiers of fruits and salad greens! The state-of-the-art monumental towers were actually the fruits section and the salad bar, and the unique refrigeration system kept the greens and fruits fresh and crisp for longer. If you’re into greens like me, you would be in for a surprise here as the choices are endless and with plenty of homemade dressings to choose from, such as French dressing, sesame sauce and wasabi! I was also pleasantly surprised to find Asian salads like Malaysia’s rojak buah, Thailand’s som tam, Chinese yee sang and Indonesia’s gado-gado. In the middle of the hall, a

repertoire of epicurean delights are placed awaited me. I saw a pleasing array of earthly pleasures in buffet lines, enveloping the open kitchen in the centre. The chefs toss and turn pans at their live stations right in front of you as they serve up traditional dishes that bring back childhood memories. A number of curries, rendang, and other nostalgic dishes emit familiar aromas that remind me of my childhood. I can’t help but reminisce the days when my grandmother would cook up dishes such as these, or when the neighbor next door brings you a pot of your favourite homecooked curry! A lot of care was put into decorating the dishes as well, as they looked as tantalizing as they taste.

CONNECT Feast

What’s most wonderful about their buffet spread, though, is the churrasco, which is quite simply a Portuguese or Spanish term for barbeque. Meats such as lamb and beef and chicken wings are perfectly grilled using large skewers, and carried around by waiters to serve eager diners. The meat can be dipped (or dunked – the way I like it!) in flavourful accompanying sauces like guacamole, chilli peppers, guava paste, chimichurri and Thai chilli coriander to create a flurry of taste in your mouth. While the churrasco is merely an option that could be added to the buffet package, I highly recommend it as it distinguishes The Resort Café’s buffet dining from other conventional buffets around town. It must be noted however that this churrasco addon is only available on Friday and Saturday dinner time buffets. The Chinese cuisine also fared rather well in this regard. The Neptune Seafood Porridge in particular caught my attention earlier on, as slices of abalone were sitting on a bed of congee which contained crabs, prawns,

scallops and other underwater treasures you would usually find in Chinese banquets. There is this unconceivable enigma surrounding Japanese fare with buffets, and The Resort Café didn’t spare that section either. Their fresh salmon, tuna and smoked salmon although authentically Japanese in taste and freshness, didn’tstand out drastically even with the fresh sashimi and rolled sushi, but the other cuisines’ magnanimous offerings in portion and in taste make up for it splendidly. Arguably most people’s favourite stop at buffets, the desserts corner was dazzling and enticing, as a chocolate fountain sits atop the left of the counter ma jestically overlooking the cakes, pastries, ice-cream and old-school favourites. The plain cheesecake, moist chocolate cake and not to forget my favourite of the lot – tiramisu – were simply delightful in taste. It was liberating to learn that apart from the massive buffet selection, the drinks menu didn’t disappoint either. The a la carte drinks menu was extensive; fresh

fruit juices, coffee, tea, even wine and liquor – more than good enough to ensure a memorably fun lunch with a group of friends or co-workers. The appealing fruits section brought me closer to the octagonal tower. With a variety of exotic and farmed fruits sourced locally and from abroad, such as strawberries, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, you can opt to have them served in slices, cubes or as a whole. Quite frankly, none is fresher than having the fruits cut for you on the spot by request. As is with all other buffet spreads, I left the place feeling fuller in the tummy than I should have. The third round of churrasco lamb brought the glutton out of me and I reckon anybody who is a self-declared food connoisseur should give this buffet a try. The Resort Café is open daily from 6:00am to 11:00pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner. However this buffet service is only available for lunch from noon to 2:30pm and for dinner from 6:30pm to 11:00pm. For reservations, call (03) 7492 8000 or email trc@sunwayhotels.com.

Flying with Newborns Travelling with young ones can be very trying for parents but doubly so for new parents with infants since they have no idea what to do. Well, your travel plans don’t have to be put on hold just because you’ve become a parent. While it can be stressful to bring your infant on-board a flight, with the right preparation and frame of mind, you can enjoy a fuss-free flight. Here are a few tips and assurances for bringing an infant on board. • At least nine days old: For safety reasons, it’s best if your baby is at least nine days old before he/she boards a flight. For premature babies, this counts from their due date. If you are in doubt, please contact a doctor to ensure that your baby is safe to travel. Travelling with babies younger than a week carries a risk in their development as their immune systems are still developing. • Child Restraint: Malindo Air provides infant safety belts during safety debriefing. You may also bring your own seat 32 / MALINDOMAG

belt. Be sure to tuck your baby safely in and don’t hesitate to ask the flight attendant for any assistance. Ask for a bassinet: When booking your ticket or assigning your seat, be sure to let the agents know that you need a bassinet. They are located in Row 1 in Business class and Row 4 in Economy class in the Boeing 737 flights. Strollers are not allowed on board the flight and are to be checked in. Priority boarding: Families with young children are invited to board the aircraft first. This allows ample time for you to stow away your luggage and ensure your children are settled in comfortably before the other passengers. Carry a diaper bag: Be prepared for all your baby’s needs. Carry a lot of diapers and anti-bacterial wipes. Take a change of clothes for your baby, and yourself, in case the baby makes a mess. Pack extra baby formula bottles and if your baby breastfeeds, then be sure to bring a blanket

along. Don’t hesitate to ask flight attendants to warm milk bottles. • Protecting the ears: During descent and take off, give your baby something to suck on, a bottle or a pacifier, to relieve ear pressure. • Buy a ticket for your baby: While you can travel with your baby on your lap, your journey will be exponentially easier if you buy another seat. You can also bring your safety seat along and attach it to the seat. With it you won’t need the infant seatbelt for your baby. The extra space also makes it more convenient to attend to your baby’s needs. Wherever you choose to go, plan it out ahead of time and try not to overschedule the first few days of your trip – you can’t predict how disrupted your baby’s rhythms might be. If you’re traveling by plane for the first time with your baby and have questions, don’t hesitate to ask us for help. We stand ready to go the extra mile to ensure your journey with your young ones in tow will be a stressfree and memorable experience.

The first of its kind with a digital compass, the G-Shock GravityMaster GA-1000 is an ideal choice for the fashionforward aviator. Like most G-Shock watches, it’s available in a host of colorways, but unlike most, it can give continual direction readings for up to 20 seconds, using the second hand to point north, the upper display for direction indication, and the lower display for direction angle. Other features include temperature measurement, oversized numerals, and thick hands with a coating that reacts with the integrated blacklight for easy reading in the dark.

The smallest and lightest GoPro yet. GoPro Hero4 Session Camera opens up new video shooting possibilities, thanks to its diminutive stature. With no rear LCD, it uses a simple one-button control scheme to start recording, and connects to the GoPro app for more robust control. It’s also compatible with existing GoPro mounts, makes possible some new ones thanks to its smallness, and is waterproof down to 10 metres without needing separate housing, letting it capture better underwater audio than its stablemates while still grabbing 1080p@60fps, 720p@100fps, or 1440p@30fps video.

The LG V10 Smartphone has unique features on its screen and camera. On the screen side, it has a 5.7-inch QHD display, and above a 160 pixeltall “second screen” that can be set to stay on, showing the time, weather, and battery status, and can display shortcuts or incoming notifications when you’re using the device. Above that, there are two 5 megapixel front cameras that work in concert with sophisticated software to join the two images into a single wide-angle shot, eliminating the need for a selfie stick. The 16 megapixel shooter on the back is no slouch either, with 4K recording in 16:9 or 21:9 cinematic ratios, an f/1.8 aperture, and optical image stabilization. The stainless steel frame, grippy backside, 4GB of RAM, microSD slot, and Snapdragon processor are just a bonus.

Goodbye, shaky pictures! The Aeon GoPro Stabiliser is a much needed accessory as one of the biggest drawbacks for GoPro is the choppy nearly unwatchable HD video. It can put an end to all that, thanks to a three axis accelerometer that takes over 1,000 measurements per second, and works together with a Cortex CPU and three brushless motors to provide buttery-smooth, shakefree video automatically. It also offers an LCD screen for framing your shot, a joystick for controlling the pan and tilt of the camera, a GoPro accessory mount, and an ergonomic grip. Price starts USD300 onwards.

RADAR TRAVEL HOROSCOPE

Nurturing November Source: Tripbase ®

Leo (23 July – 22 August)

Let your inner child come out and play. You don’t need to go far; home is where the action is this month. Pack it in with a staycation full of science museum exhibits, history tours, arts, cooking classes and touristy-fun offerings. You’ll enjoy seeing things through the eyes of babes, so make sure to invite your family and your friends’ kids.

Scorpio

(23 October – 21 November) Your three best travel companions this month are me, myself and I. Take a break from needy friends or guiltinducing relatives and take care of yourself, though it doesn’t mean you need to spend all your time solo or in silence. With four planets in Scorpio, your adventurous side is in just the right mood to strike up a

conversation with the hotty at the bar, or find your new best friend on line for buffet.

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Libra (23 September – 22 October)

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

Gemini (21 May – 20 June)

Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December)

Aries (21 March – 19 April)

Cancer (21 June – 22 July)

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

Steer clear of places you’ve been to before...even if they ARE your “favourites.” Anything “different” or “other” will satisfy your inner explorer, awakened by the Libra Sun this month. Grab low-maintenance, adventurous pals who don’t mind feeling out-of-place, or getting dirty. Go outside your cultural comfort zone and learn local customs; bonus if there is an adrenalinepumping aspect to the journey.

While everyone else is focused on eating this month, you’ve never felt more like burning calories. Head for the hills the kind with the black diamonds at the trailhead, or the views of the entire city when you get to the top. Breaks are fine in between but don’t spend too much time chit-chatting and sitting around. It’s time to move that stuck energy in your life, literally and figuratively. You’ll melt away stress and probably a few pounds to boot.

Staycations may be all the rage, but with go-getter Mars in your house of longdistance travel, go as far and wide as you can or risk going stir crazy. You’re in for some intense bonding with your travel mates. Avoid groups; they’ll limit the spontaneity and attention you need and pick like-minded companions who want to say Turkey in a different language or eat turkey in a totally new style.

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

You light up when the sun goes down so pick a place where everything stays open late and travel with a companion who agrees that sunset is just the beginning of the day. If you’re single, you’ll attract more potential companions than you’re used to and maybe even a keeper among them. As a couple, use the after-dark hours to show off new clothes and of course, each other.

The world is your classroom as you set off in a quest for an educational adventure. You’re a natural teacher, so take the kids, even if they have to skip school. Start with the guided tour but don’t miss hidden streets where you’ll find gems not included in any guidebooks. Stay away from chain hotels. The planets in your investigative house are craving authenticity, not a fast Wi-Fi connection.

With planets in both your fifth house of glamour and your sixth house of pragmatism, you are in the market for “budget luxe” and when you find it you will be very happy indeed. Look into hotels with incentives, like an extra night free or a spa treatment included. Bring your holiday gift list and continue bargain hunting for artisan gifts with the personal touches that show you care.

If you’ve ever felt like the black sheep of the family for blowing off a holiday or birthday party you just couldn’t face, now’s the time to make up for it. With motivator Mars in your domestic sector, you actually want to have a family gettogether for Thanksgiving. If someone else is planning the holiday, get ready to pack up and pitch in. If not, invite everyone to your house then show them a good “vacation” time around town.

Sometimes you wish someone else (like a magical fairy godmother) would do all the planning and let you just sit back and enjoy the ride. This month, go find one! Tag along with a friend or relative who’s already got something planned with 4 planets in your house of peers you are up for some companionship anyway. Tell them you want to feel like a teenager again and see what they come up with.

Sagittarius, you’re looking for awakening experiences that teaches you more about yourself. Travel to an industry convention to expand your business moxie. Tune into the mind-body-soul connection at a yoga workshop on a warm beach or immerse yourself in a different culture to challenge your assumptions about the world. A sentimental journey to a place you loved in the past just won’t warm your heart now; you need to stretch and meet new people.

You’re on top of the world, career-wise, so keep that ambitious energy with a business-centered trip “on the grid” with reliable Internet. Choose fellow gogetters, combine a seminar or lecture with an already scheduled trip and don’t let anyone talk you out of bringing your laptop. You can limit the hours you work per day and still get that new assignment.

Now, Malindo Air is doing just that with the launch of Malindo WiFi and Malindo Mobile, two services, which keep air travelers connected across their GSMenabled devices and computers, available on select flights. IN-FLIGHT WIFI & MOBILE

CONNECTING TO WIFI Malindo Air makes it easy for passengers to tap into these exciting new capabilities. After the crew announces the use of technology devices is permitted, simply turn on the WiFi settings on your device. You will instantly be connected to the only network available – Malindo Air’s in-flight WiFi portal. Once on the home page, you can enjoy complimentary content by clicking the “About Us” and “Destination” tabs to learn more about Malindo Air and where we fly. By clicking the “Connect Now” button at the top right of the page, you will be directed to a T-Mobile payment page with four pass options, with data caps ranging from 20MB to 100MB. Sessions range from 30 minutes to 12 hours in duration at prices ranging from $6.95 to $21.95 USD. Once you’re connected, you’ll enjoy true broadband service at speeds of up to 20MB on average. GOING MOBILE To use Malindo Mobile, simply turn on your phone in airplane mode once the crew announces that the use of mobile devices and computers is allowed and you will be automatically connected to the AeroMobile network, a leading

provider of mobile data, voice and texting for passengers using their own phones while in flight. As this is a roaming service, you will need to have roaming enabled with your mobile service provider and your mobile operator will need to have a roaming agreement with AeroMobile. Once connected, you’ll receive a free welcome message and most likely a message from your mobile operator which includes pricing information. Similar to when you travel abroad and use a roaming service with your number, standard roaming charges for all calls and text messages using Malindo Mobile will be clearly indicated on your monthly mobile phone bill. Malindo Mobile currently supports both GSM and Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) protocols, which encompass most devices available today. If you choose not to use Malindo WiFi service for your mobile data, you will need to disable WiFi in your settings. Check your applications settings or disable roaming if you wish to only use voice or SMS services to avoid using mobile data. ENHANCING TRAVEL EXPERIENCE Malindo WiFi and Malindo Mobile

are designed to help make travel time a smooth, productive and enjoyable experience. If your mission is business, these capabilities provide you with easy, uninterrupted access to your work to stay productive. If staying in touch is on your agenda, you now have the resources close at hand for text messages and phone calls home. And, how about some online shopping or keeping current with the latest news? INSIDER’s MALINDO LOUNGE

The “Power of 8” of Airport Lounges For a frequent flyer, what a lounge has to offer will create the significance of your journey. Before you start out on that long haul, medium long haul or short flight even, the pre-flight lounge experience can certainly set the mood. courtesy. The performance of the connection may vary but even at a low speed, connectivity makes it possible to get stuff done very effectively.

The airport lounge access maximizes your creativity, productivity and relaxation opportunities. For the occasional traveler, lounge access will not make much of a difference. How does one use an airport lounge to the fullest advantage? Here are some useful tips to make your time in an airport lounge more valuable and interesting. 1. Refresh yourself Take a shower. This refreshes you for the flight ahead especially if you are on transit to your next destination. Most lounges will supply the basic necessities to facilitate this. Savvy travelers will bring along their favorite shower must haves. Make sure you have all these stowed in a clear sealable plastic bag so you can get this through security on international flights. 2. Get a nice cup of coffee or tea Some lounges offer barista service and the line can usually be long, even in a lounge. A sure option offering would be automated coffee machines offering hot chocolate, cappuccino and black coffee. Tea drinkers would surely be offered a good variety of tea sachets with warm milk on the side. 3. Sample different juices and sodas At the end of an exhausting day, a refreshing drink on the house can be just the thing. Juices and sodas are refrigerated and chilled. Best way, self service. Although lounge staff would be courteous and polite enough to serve if so

7. Charge up Due to the growth in use of mobile phones and notebook PCs, getting the ability to recharge gadgets has become one of the principle attractions of an airport lounge. Lounges have power outlets liberally sprinkled around the room. Power banks and adaptors are usually readily available as well if you have left yours behind.

requested. This is a privilege to lounge users. 4. Have a nice meal Food varies in a lounge. But it is invariably better tasting than on flight. You will also have a wider choice of meals. You might wish to consider having a meal in the lounge and opt out of your full meal service on board. This makes way for a good uninterrupted sleep inflight. 5. Printing and fax services Most lounges will offer access to computers and printers. Business travelers would usually have your own computer on hand, but the ability to be able to print a document on the go can be helpful even when you least expect it. 6. Use the Wi-Fi Make sure you ask at the reception what the arrangements for Wi-Fi are. Most lounges will offer this

8. Chill out Relaxation is primarily important when you are on a trip. A lounge service before a flight is meant to provide travelers with creature comfort. Take time to refresh, sip that coffee, check out the chilled juices, savor the food, send a message to your loved one and at the same time, charge up all your gadgets. Have a pleasant flight!

IN-FLIGHT HIGH FLYER

The

Magic of Service

Flight attendants have, arguably, the toughest job in the air, trying to coordinate with both passengers and pilots so that the flight remains smooth and hassle-free. Meet Marian Imelda, a city girl from Kuching who found her dream job with Malindo Air.

‘The roster can be a little tiring for some of us who have a family. But when you have so much passion for the job and have such friendly colleagues, you dont’t feel the difficulty’

With four years of flight attendant experience behind her, Marian’s passion for the profession lets her come prepared to work every day to deal with the stickiest of situations that can sometimes arise on board a flight. Marian enlightens us on both the thrill and spills of the job.

different places every day. Since we fly with a different crew set every time, there is very little drama. This is what I love. And on the days that I fly, I make new friends since the crew is different each time. The passenger profile also varies, so all of it is very interesting.

What made you interested in becoming a flight attendant? At first, I was encouraged by my parents to be a flight stewardess, because most of my cousins were also stewardesses. Moreover, I was prone to air sickness. But a lot of my flight attendant friends were joining the airlines, and seeing them travel around the world made me want to join an airline too. So I did, and I found that air sickness only happened in the first two flights. I adapted very quickly.

Where did you work before Malindo Air? Before Malindo Air, I was working in my hometown Kuching. It was a corporate environment and I worked with them for five years. But then I decided to join the airline industry and it was such a change. That’s when I joined a full service airline. It was a bit difficult in the beginning but once you pick up the mannerisms, it becomes very easy.

What do you love most about the job? Our roster allows us to fly to 48 | MALINDOMAG

with. The atmosphere is very friendly, everyone is very warm. All the colleagues, we’re all friends, it doesn’t matter what we are, the cabin crew or the technical crew. Outside of work, we are all friends. But when it comes to work, they’re all very serious, and professional. Has your job affected your lifestyle much? Yes, the roster can be a little tiring for some of us who have a family. But when you have so much passion for the job and have such friendly colleagues, you don’t feel the difficulty. Any advice you’d like to give passengers? Well safety is the biggest concern for us. When turbulence occurs and the seatbelt sign is on, passengers still get up to use the bathroom facilities, so please avoid that as it is very unsafe for passengers. Very few passengers

have air sickness problems, but I do suggest taking antivomiting tablets if you really feel uncomfortable. If you’re feeling unwell, we’ll have you recline your seat and perform some basic aid. We also have some trouble with intoxicated passengers or passengers who bring alcohol on board. But largely, our passengers are very cooperative so we have a very easy time. Any tips you’d like to give aspiring flight attendants? Well your entire lifestyle gets a ma jor change. You must be ready to accept the challenge of adapting to the working environment. Everything changes; the timings of eating, sleeping and working are all topsy turvy. Not many people can cope with this kind of change, but those who do, get rewarded. It’s a hard adjustment. If you can cope with that, then you’ll enjoy being a flight stewardess.
