Amber CHIA A beauty revolution
By Sharmila Vella
M

alaysia’s top model turned entrepreneur, Amber Chia has graced catwalk on international runways in six continents, starred in seven movies, authored two books and appointed as brand ambassador for over 30 brands. Amber’s first break came when she won the Guess Watches Timeless Beauty International Model Search title in 2004. She became the first Asian model to campaign for Guess Watches worldwide. Her continued rise to modelling merit was further proven when renowned celebrity designer Victoria Beckham personally selected her to present the Victoria Beckham Autumn/Winter 2009 ready-to-wear collection during the glamourous New York Fashion Week. Her rise to stardom is very much similar as the rags to riches story, wherein she came from a small fishing village in Tawau, Sabah. She is third of six children and daughter of a fisherman. The family lived with such poverty that at one point Amber was forced to leave her family and moved in with a foster family, along with her two elder siblings. After returning to live with her parents, she helped her father with his fishmonger business every morning before school, while dreaming to become a model. Finally, the courageous teenager bought a ticket to Kuala Lumpur and embarked on her quest to stardom. “Modelling was my childhood dream. My goal was to move to the capital city to kick-start my career. That finally happened when I was 17. It has always been my dream and now it has come true,” says Amber during an interview with MalindoMag. Amber and her crew fly Malindo Air for work and personal purposes. 14 | MALINDOMAG
“I like the overall service on Malindo Air. It feels like I am getting a premium service with a reasonable price. I also like it that the airline flies from Subang Airport as it is very convenient and close by to catch my last-minute flights,” says the model who is usually pressed for time in her busy schedule. On the business front, the model knows too well that external beauty may only sell temporarily, so she decided to establish the Amber Chia Academy for young and aspiring models to learn the ins and outs of the modelling industry in 2010 as her main focus besides her modelling career. As for her future plans, the ambitious model turned entrepreneur wants to have a beauty and fashion college one day. She proudly says, “As long as I have something to achieve, just give me the time and I will achieve it”. “Even if I have to wait for another 10 years before it happens, it does not matter to me because it took me 17 years to get to where I am today”. She hopes one day the next successful supermodel would be from the Amber Chia Academy. Not just on the local scene but on the international front as well. The Academy offers many short courses for aspiring models and actors who would like to educate themselves on modelling, acting, fashion, make-up, hair styling and most importantly, how to stand out in the industry. Her advice to future models is to not wait but to chase their dreams. “Waiting will never make things happen. Just take the bold move and do not look back. Even if you succeed or fail, at least you will have an answer for yourself. Life is all about learning and experiences you gain will definitely make you stronger,” added Amber.

WANDERLUST PHUKET

If swimming, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters and catching sunsets on the beach are your idea of a relaxing getaway, then Phuket is the perfect place for that. Regaled as Thailand’s largest island, Phuket is a haven of beautiful beaches, often categorised as one of South East Asia’s most romantic and relaxing vacation spots. So if you are craving for a swim in one of the nicest beaches in the world, look no further than these stunning attractions in South Thailand.
Be generous with your itinerary and make sure you squeeze in some time to visit one of Phuket’s most gorgeous beaches - Nai Harn Beach. Think jewel waters that ripple in the face of the sun, a luxurious strip of powdery white sand and a quiet, soothing atmosphere away from the crowd. Most beaches are peppered with noisy tourists, but not Nai Harn. Unshaded from the sun, it is also the perfect beach to score a tan.

Patong Beach is a tourist favourite. People describe it as the heartbeat of Phuket’s beach scene due to the huge crowds and crazy nightlife. It is big, bold and loud. It is a good beach for a simple swim or a quick roast in the sun.

Remember Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach? Well, this is the beach. Phuket is huge, so if you have time to explore the area, you should include Phi Phi Island into your list. It is the superstar beach of Thailand and is the common topic of discussion among travellers all across the nation. Its beauty is breathtaking while towering cliffs greet you as you approach the island by boat, giving way to the beach-fronted jungle of golden-white sands and the richness of crystal-clear waters.

Kata Beach ranks high on Phuket’s popularity list, right after Patong Beach. The white sandy shores open up to an incredible blue sea, and if you want a change of activity, you have the option of dining and shopping around the area.
Snorkelling is a favoured activity among locals and tourists, and just like its name suggests, Paradise Beach is one of the best beaches to experience marine life in the flesh. It is revered as one of Phuket’s most gorgeous beaches, with turquoise waters so clear, you can see the big granite rocks at the bottom. It also has a stunning coral reef about 100 metres out, which should only be accessed by strong and experienced swimmers. Phuket is a great getaway with heaps of fun to offer. So start planning your next vacation. It will be a sin not to visit the stunning beaches, whilst that, picking up swimming lessons will be idle if you cannot already swim so you can explore the brilliant underwater with ease. Before you go, do check the dates to ensure that the season allows for safe swimming. Head on to www.kaodim.com to engage certified swimming instructors, and other service professionals in Malaysia. So apart from packing warm layers of clothes (because it is cold up there) and calculating the cost of the climb, these seven tips will greatl y prepare you for the longdistance hike.
WANDERLUST KOTA KINABALU
Work On Your Cardiovascular Health
Stamina is crucial during a long hike, so it is not too late to build it up with cardio exercises. Start off with a cardio routine two or three times each week. The whol e point of this is to ease your body and mind into being active. Swimming is a great way to launch into physical training because it is a low-impact sport th at builds up your stamina by expanding your lung capacity. As you will be doing lots of walking during the hike, you should also incorporate long walks into your routine and graduall y increase your distance each week. Hill y terrains are great training grounds for this.
Introduce Weight Training Into Your Workout Routine
Personal trainers recommend going up and down the stairs with a full y-loaded pack to prepare yourself for the real hike. Because the entire journey up Mount Kinabalu requires a minimum of 2 days, you will be traveling with a backpack loaded with your necessities to last you the entire journey.
Invest In A Good Pair Of Shoes
A crucial rul e of thumb before you attempt to conquer any mountain is to invest in a sturdy pair of shoes with a good grip, because you do not want to risk sliding on slippery surfaces. Make sure you give your feet enough time to ease into the shoes first before the actual hike by training and running in them so you can full y understand how they feel in the shoes. This prevents blisters.
Rest While Standing Up
You may be tempted to sit down after a cardio workout, but personal trainers would strongl y advise you to rest whil e standing up, because sitting down slows your momentum. Sitting down means you won’t be using much of your l eg muscl es, which means blood won’t be pumped from your veins to your heart. With the lack of blood in your heart, your blood pressure takes a plunge and may even cause you to pass out.

WANDERLUST KOTA KINABALU
Strengthen Your Thigh Muscles
Anyone who h as climbed a mountain like Mount Kinabalu will emph asize on the importance of strengthening your thigh muscl es so you won’t wear your knees out during the long hike. Fitness coaches recommend squats and lunges among the various types of thigh-building regimes. These exercises will tone up your thighs and improve your muscl e mass to combat knee probl ems from arising during your hike.
Perform Lots Of Stretching Whenever You Can
Stretch as often as you can to increase your body’s fl exibility, because you never know when you might need to get down on all fours. An experienced fitness instructor will take your l eg muscl es into consideration and he or she will be abl e to recommend some dynamic stretches th at will decrease your chances of getting an injury whil e improving your motion range and joint fl exibility, which is extremel y important when you are trekking up and down Southeast Asia’s tall est mountain.
Prepare Yourself Mentally
Whil e physical training is important, mental preparation should not be overlooked. A long-distance hike demands a lot of concentration and mental strength to persevere and push on even when your l egs are threatening to buckl e beneath you. The ch ances of ch all enges arising during the journey is very likel y, and even the small est ones can stain your motivation on a bad day. Imagine h aving to hike for hours with wet socks, or with the sun scorching against your skin. It is not going to be pl easant, so you will need to train your mind to embrace the difficulties and focus on wh at it’ll feel like to reach the peak with its breathtaking view, coupl ed with a rich sense of self-accomplishment from a successful hike. Professional fitness trainers make a huge difference in the preparation, both physicall y and psychologicall y. They can customise a training routine for you and set certain guidelines in your regime to refrain you from seriousl y injuring yourself. They are also the perfect peopl e to push you toward your physical capacity, whil e helping you stretch boundaries and achieve new limits for yourself. Owners Suzanna Mohd Sallehuddin and Azlan Bin Muhamad was living in Italy when they got the inspiration to open a café after patronising a wonderful pastry shop in Villastellone, Turin, Italy. The shop called “Il Regno del Dolce- La Bottega del Caffe”, was owned and run by their good friend, Giuseppe Lombino who produces wonderful coffee and delicious pastries. Owner and baker herself, Suzanna, finally decided to recreate and share the experience of her favourite cafés and pastry shops in Italy after leaving her corporate world in 2013. Occasionally, the café also features new flavours or barista’s specialty “choice of the month”. base or scrub ingredient, base on your treatment type. If you are in need to revitalise your energy, then treatments such as deep tissue massage is highly recommended, where it focuses on realigning the deeper layers of muscles. It is done for chronic aches and pain whereby contracted areas such as a stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders are the main areas the massage therapist concentrates on. Some of the strokes are the same as those used in classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the connective tissues surrounding the muscles. To do this, the massage therapist uses massage oil and she often uses direct deep pressure, so your muscles
have to be relaxed in order for the therapist to reach the deeper musculature. At certain points during the massage, some people may feel a little discomfort due to stiff muscles, and hence the therapists effort to undo the stiffness. It is crucial to inform the massage therapist when you are hurting and experience pain that is outside your comfort range. Ozmosis also offer pre-flight spa indulgence whereby the relaxation experience will begin with an exfoliating scrub to cleanse and revitalise the skin, followed by an enzymatic sea mud wrap to ease your body into a relaxing condition. After a refreshing shower with Ozmosis premium body wash which is 100 percent organic, guests can indulge in an one hour massage wih their preferred choice of oil. And to finish the pampering session before the flight, is a deep cleansing clear skin facial using Pevonia products. Rest assured, customers leave the spa feeling satisfied, refreshed and relaxed after their pre-flight spa indulgence.

SK11 Facial Treatment Essence SKII is a Japanese brand of skincare and beauty products, which is famous for incorporating their star ingredient “Pitera” into its products. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence has over 90 percent Pitera, the miracle ingredient discovered over 30 years ago that remains essentially unchanged till today. Made up of a delicate composition of vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids, Pitera contains certain components of NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor), which exists in human skin. Even after three decades of research, not all of Pitera’s mysterious benefits have been uncovered even as it continues to bring crystal clear skin to women around the world. In just 14 days, your skin’s 5 dimensions are visibly transformed: spots are less visible, appearance of wrinkles is reduced, skin texture is more refined, firmness is improved, and radiance is beautifully elevated and skin becomes breathtakingly crystal clear.
SK-II GenOptics Aura Essence SKII’s new essence contains the latest breakthrough in whitening technology. Re-coded with Pitera infused GenOptics Aura Complex, it reduces your skin’s hidden and visible spot formations to reveal a spot-less aura glow. This leaves skin looking radiant from within. Through extensive study of the science of skin, light and optical properties, SK-II made a breakthrough in skin whitening; more UV exposure causes damage to the skin, leading to visible and hidden age spots and dark and dull skin tone that blocks skin’s aura. In combination these issues create a “cloudy” complexion or “skin clouds” that prevent clearer, more radiant skin; even amongst panelists in their 20 or those less exposed to UV who were yet to experience visible spots. With two amazing ingredient called Prunus extract and Inositol that is in the Aura Essence, it helps to combat all of these damaged causes to your skin. In eight weeks of continue usage, you will see the difference. MALINDOMAG | 35

Lo ver
ark Louis Benedict, 32, started working in the tourism industry as a field naturalist for a big eco-tourism company in Sabah. It was from there that he learnt a lot about the wildlife and the thick Rainforest of Sabah and fell in love with nature. His passion for wildlife and nature made him quit his job in tourism industry to be a Project Coordinator for Animal Projects & Environmental Education Sdn Bhd (APE Malaysia). For him being an APE Malaysia coordinator allows him to be the catalyst of change. He is able to make a difference to the people involved in the project. He has also learnt that no matter how small the actions now but accumulatively in the long run they can make a big difference in the future. APE Malaysia is a social enterprise that focuses on conservation as a means to enable the wider change towards a sustainable future. Flagship Malaysian species such as orangutans, pygmy elephants, sun bears and marine turtles are used to showcase the complex interrelationships between humans and the environment, allowing everyday people to connect to both the problem and the solutions. APE Malaysia participates in on-going conservation projects with willing partners who share the same ethos and who are working towards common conservation outcomes. People and organizations can become involved in these projects either through APE’s volunteering programme, education programme or set up corporate responsibility projects. The project that he is currently handling is known as Borneo Wildlife Safari. It is a 12 day volunteering experience that focuses on the aspect of wildlife animal welfare by improving the habitat of the wildlife through forest restoration work. The overall objective of this project is to help in the Corridor of Life vision in the Kinabatangan by ensuring that the connectivity between isolated or fragmented forest are bridge to allow not only the wildlife to roam but also to ensure that the common source of vitality – the water of the Kinabatangan is preserved for the people that are staying here. The project involves as much locals from the village through paid volunteering contribution by hiring local communities as boat handlers, workers at tree planting site, outsourcing of meals for volunteers, accommodation, purchasing of saplings, vehicles and other activities. Almost 65 percent of the total project cost goes back to the local community of this village. Anyone passionate about volunteering, check out www.apemalaysia. com.

Beauty without the bulk
T
aking selfies and putting them up on Instagram or Facebook on your holidays are the norm these days. However, holidays can be hectic. Throw in time zone changes and jet lag, very soon, you won’t look beautiful for the cameras anymore when dry skin, frizzy hair and chapped lips starts appearing.Stay beautiful on-the-go with these three tips.
Pack an essential beauty kit comprising of eight must-haves:
Eat and drink the right stuff:
→ Aloe vera – be it at a beach or a winter holiday, aloe vera is a skin saviour for sunburned or dry skin. It acts as a cooling gel for healing purposes and also a hydrating face mask for tired skin. An all-time favourite for smart travellers. → Lip balm – chapped lips are painful so if your destination is dry and or cold, pack a rich lip balm to apply day and night. → → Cleanser – Clean skin is the first step to beauty. Get a cleanser that effectively removes make-up too! → Moisturizer – A good, hydrating moisturizer chases away dehydrated skin, reducing lines and pumps up your glow. → Sunscreen – Avoid painful sunburns and spots by covering your skin with at least a SPF50 protection if you intend to be outdoors for most of the day. Do this even when you are skiing. For those participating in water activities, re-applying regularly is highly recommended. → Anti-frizz hair spray – how many times has your hair misbehaved due to the change in your environment? Fix your crowning glory with an anti-frizz hair spray. → Breath freshener – Do not neglect your oral hygiene as a foul breath can certainly turn people off. As you try new cuisine on your travels, it is always safer to have a breath freshener as you do not know the after-effect of some food. → Vitamin C – For the sake of your health and skin, pack along a vitamin C of at least 500 mg to avoid falling ill.
→ Onboard the plane – avoid alcohol as it dries up your skin. Drink water instead. → During your travel - street food is delicious especially the deep fried ones. Too much may cause your skin to break out. So, moderation is the key.
Sleep well: → Getting enough rest on your holidays should not be forgotten as this is what holidays are about! So sleep well to avoid the dark circles around your eyes.

Have Yo u r Say
Dear Malindo, I flew with you yesterday from KL to Jakarta, which was my second flight with Malindo Airlines. And I really must say you are my favorite Airline so far. The service during the flight is incredible (on my first flight from Langkawi to KL one of your stewardess offered me a seat with more space because my legs touched the seat in front of me) and also the comfort is pretty good. The seats are comfortable, have enough space for your legs (second flight), the airplanes seems to be new and even on a short flight you get a snack / drink and you are able to watch a movie. The prices you offer with this all round service is probably the highlight. As you see I’m a fan of yours and will be happy to fly with you again.
Sekian, wassalam

Yesterday my partner and I flew from Langkawi to Kuala Lumpur then from Kuala Lumpur to Perth. I would like to throughly thank you and congratulate you on the amazing service we received. The flight was smooth, the flight attendants were so friendly, the free entertainment, pillows and blankets were a very pleasant surprise. The only slight problem was the meal was very spicey and there were no alternatives. Apart from that I would once again thank you for the incredible service and will definitely be recommending your airline to family and friends. Thank you

I had a problem with my son’s visa to Australia and your team leader in KLIA tried his best to help solve the problem. He eventually managed to solve the issue. He was so helpful and I am very grateful to him as this is my first oversea trip with my wife and children. Thank you Azizan and thank you Malindo! This incident has caused me to love Malindo Air more!
