As we approach the end of third quarter, some of us have began looking into planning our year-end holidays. With that in mind, Malindo Air has introduced some interesting new regional routes to choose from. Beginning with the launch of Medan, Indonesia end of last month, we are subsequently flying to Hanoi, Vietnam beginning September 1 and to Taipei, Taiwan on September 10. Finally for this phase, Malindo Air will be extending its wings to Chiang Mai, Thailand, by end of October. Our wanderlust segments this month highlights two of our attractive new routes. For those who are looking for a nature escapade, Medan is an ideal choice to relax and unwind in view of mesmerising places like Lake Toba, Brastagi, Sipiso-piso Waterfall or even Bukit Lawang. Whereas the enchanting city of Hanoi charms tourists alike with the authentic Vietnamese culture. Besides our network expansion, Malindo Air has recently partnered with Etihad Airways for interlining services. This is our third premium airline after Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways, that we have inked the deal with. That brings us to our cover story this month on Malindo Air’s expansion plan that includes interlining deals, expanding
regional network and the arrival of new aircrafts. In due time, we hope to widely mark our reach in Asia and thereafter to be a leading industry player in the aviation sector in line with our vision as well as our industry partner’s, Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB). It is also timely as Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is on its mission to position itself to be a ma jor transit and tourist hub in Asean. Called Runway to Success 2020, MAHB’s ultimate goal is to turn their airports into a global leader in creating airport cities. For Formula One (F1) enthusiast, the time of the year is here to get the adrenaline rush on the F1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix which takes place from September 30 to October 2 at Sepang International Circuit. We hope to continue being your preferred airline in making your way to this global event. As for international travellers and nonresident locals, this will be an ideal opportunity to plan a concurrent getaway within our network. Till next month, have a pleasant journey with us and happy reading!

alindo Air is fast expanding its reach to add new destinations in the Asian region. In the month of September, the airline is flying to two new popular destination, Hanoi, Vietnam (1 daily) and Taipei, Taiwan (1 daily) . Prior to that, in the month of August, Malindo Air started flying to Medan, Indonesia (1 daily). Medan is the capital of Indonesia’s North Sumatra province. The serene city has many interesting sights like the grand Maimun Palace and octagonal Great Mosque which dominate the city center, combining Islamic and European style of architecture. The city itself is quite well known for “food-tourism”, especially amongst other Indonesians and tourist. It is also known for its shopping and handicrafts. Medan has an interesting contrast of the old, Dutch style green areas, with parks, and beautiful old Dutch houses with hundreds of newer, shoddy shop houses sprawled together in the commercial areas along with a few modern style malls. Just north of Medan are Jalan Selat Panjang street, famed for its ethnic food stalls, and Tjong A Fie Mansion, a museum in a former Chinese merchant’s home. Whereas the capital city of Vietnam, is known for its modern and its centuries-old architecture that has captured many tourist to visit this charming city of Hanoi. At its heart, is the exotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are generally arranged by trade. There are also many little pagodas and temples, including Bach Ma, honouring a legendary horse, plus Dong Xuan market, selling household goods to scrumptious Vietnamese street food. The other new and interesting city is Taipei, located on the northen part of Taiwan. It is a modern metropolis with colonial lanes, hectic shopping streets and contemporary skyscrapers. Taipei is a lovely little city whose beauty lies in its blend of Chinese culture with a curious fusion of Japanese, Southeast Asian and American influences. The skyline is crowned by the 509m-tall, bamboo-shaped Taipei 101 skyscraper, with branded shops at the bottom and a rapid elevator to an observatory near the top. Taipei is also known for its active street-food scene and many MALINDOMAG | 9

night markets, including the famous Shilin market. In October, Malindo Air will be flying to another famous tourist destination, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand that dates back to the 1200s. Its old city area still retains remnants of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. It is also home to hundreds of elegant and impressive Buddhist temples, including 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with carved serpents. Despite the constant arrival of planes and trains full of tourists, the former seat of the Lanna kingdom is still blissfully calm and laid-back. This is a place to relax and unwind. One can just stroll around the backstreets, and discover a city that is pretty much Thai in its feature, impression and approach. Besides this four exciting destinations, Malindo Air is planning on more destinations in the 10 | MALINDOMAG
coming months as they are rapidly expanding their network. Malindo Air is positioning itself to become a ma jor player in the growth of the nation’s aviation and tourism industries. In line with the company’s expansion plan, the airline is fast growing to provide more services to more of Asia countries soon and beyond. Malindo Air currently has more than 800 weekly flights to 40 cities in 13 countries in the Indian subcontinent, South India, the Asean region, China and Australia, with several new cities set to be launched before year-end. The relocation to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in March 2016, has not only enhanced regrowth of the airline, but has been said to boost the economic growth of the country further. The Airline is also expanding its network by taking delivery of two Boeing aircraft in August and one in September. For the full year, it would have taken delivery of eight new aircrafts.
Malindo Air has focused entirely on international expansion in 2015 after mainly pursuing domestic growth in 2013 and 2014. Malindo Air carried nearly 4 million passengers in 2015, giving it about a 6 percent share of the total Malaysian market. Less than three years after commencing operations, the premium service airline has become a relatively significant force in a market, evolving from a point to point domestic operation to an international network airline. Malindo Air is currently planning for more rapid growth in 2017, to better connect North Asia and South Asia. The airline intends to expand their network and get more passengers flying via KLIA. One of their bigger objective is to help position KLIA as a transit and tourism hub. The combination of fastdeveloping economics in the region and globalization, affirms more people are travelling for work and leisure. Airports in the Asia-Pacific

region are getting to grips with the requirement for urgent expansions to cope with rising passenger numbers. Competition among Asian air hubs is heating up as countries in the region are scurrying to build the best airports, add runways and expand passenger terminals to become the continent’s top gateway to the world. Also in competition to become the main air hub in Asia, is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB) has launched its five-year business plan to position themselves as a preferred Asean hub. Called Runway to Success 2020 (RtS2020), which charts its business direction for 2016 to 2020. RtS2020, with its ultimate goal of turning Malaysia Airports into a global leader in creating airport cities. The plan is centred on two main agendas – which is to strengthen its core business and to expand and diversify its operations. In doing so, MAHB will focus on four strategic priorities – elevating KLIA as a preferred Asean hub; enhancing total airport experience for all its stakeholders, developing Aeropolis; as well as increasing its

international footprint to the world. The KLIA Aeropolis is an ecosystem development that is synergistic with the airport business and aligned with Malaysia’s development agenda. It aims to elevate the country to developed-nation status by 2020, and to transform KLIA Aeropolis into a world-class airport city with high standards and a tourist destination in its own right. KLIA’s location is strategically within the heart of Asean. Its excellent connectivity within the region is a strategic advantage to the development of KLIA Aeropolis. Today, KLIA is already catering to more than 50 million passengers a year with over 60 airlines serving more than 130 direct destinations. Another strategic advantage is the Malaysian Government’s foresight in providing for future growth by allocating KLIA with a land bank totalling 100 square km. 12 | MALINDOMAG
This allows for it to have unrestricted growth potential, expanding from a core airport to that of a complete, synergistic airport and aviation ecosystem that provides the best in class connectivity, speed and agility. More than 60 percent or 13,000 acres of the land bank is designated for airport and aeronautical use. Of this 13,000 acres, the current KLIA airport system takes up 6,000 acres, leaving a balance of 7,000 acres reserved for the core airport growth needs in the long term. Thirty percent of scheduled aircraft deliveries by Boeing and Airbus will be to this region. The Asia Pacific region is also a strong magnet in attracting aviationlinked businesses due to its cost competitiveness, ready talent pool and available infrastructure. The region already accounts for 21 percent of the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul market.
The KLIA Aeropolis development is centred on three key clusters, namely Air Cargo & Logistics, Aerospace & Aviation, and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) & Leisure. Its success will allow MAHB to transform from an infrastructure provider to a key economic enabler by contributing significantly to national Gross Domestic Product and job creation. MAHB estimate that there will be continued growth in travel even with a slowdown in economic the world over, with passenger numbers to hit 30 million by 2017 and 40 million by 2022. With the growing number of passengers the world over, Malindo Air is determined to play an important role in connecting KLIA to the rest of the world. alming nervous flyers to presenting the standard safety procedures, are all in a day’s work, but what is life above the clouds really like? For some, it’s the glamour of flying around the world, but for Cabin Crew, Noor Razrina, 37, it is the job of handling and taking care of her passengers. According to Razrina, a satisfied passenger is a happy passenger and that means he or she will fly Malindo Air again. She is also a single mother of two children aged 7 and 14. Besides her passion of being a Cabin Crew, she also loves spending time with her kids. It hasn’t been an easy road but she likes the challenges that are thrown to her. Life of a Cabin Crew has its perks. She gets to meet a lot of interesting people in her line of work from her colleagues to the passengers she serves. She also gets to travel around the world. Her favourite part is waking up in different parts of the world and looking outside the window to appreciate the scenic view of the different countries she flies to. To her it feels like a working holiday when she gets some time off and get to explore the country with her colleagues. Her favourite part is to try the different cuisines in the countries she has visited. It never fails to amaze her what people in other parts of the world consume for their daily meals. If time permits, she will go for a city tour and shopping.

What is the most memorable experience in your career? I had the opportunity to serve the owner of Malindo Air, Rusdi Kirana and his wife. I was personall y selected to be roosted for the flight. It was an honour for me to serve an influencial and inspirational figure in the region. Another meaningful experience is when a passenger compliments me for my job. I feel reall y appreciated, hence it makes my day!
Any fun moments on board that you like to share with us? I like to play with kids. I usuall y prank them and make jokes. They will run back to their parents to clarify what I have said and I will wink at the parents to let them know I am just joking. I once stopped a child from crying by telling her that a cookie monster will come and give her a cookie or a sweet if she stops crying. The kid immediatel y stopped her crying and asked if the cookie monster is coming soon and we, the crew ended-up laughing.
What are the criteria that makes a good Cabin Crew? One needs to be humble, friendl y and pleasant to the passengers. One also need to think fast in a difficult situation and have a lot of patience when dealing with difficult customers.
What is the protocol for new destination? We get a briefing on the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine information of the new country we are fl ying to. We also need to prepare the custom form for passengers fl ying into the country. Besides that we will be given information on the weather, the food and interesting touristic places of the country for our knowledge if the passengers were to ask us.
What are the expectations of the passengers on a new destination flight? Since we are briefed on the pre-flight destination we are fl ying to, we usuall y can handle the passenger questions relating to the destination. We also learn a bit of their language, so we can ask them their choice of food or communicate with them using body language.
All in all, the role of a cabin crew is to provide good customer service to passengers while ensuring passengers comfort and safety throughout the flight. MALINDOMAG | 15

onging for a quick escape to a tropical beauty of plush rainforest, waterfalls, mountains and lakes? Then Medan is the perfect gateway to enjoy and be one with nature. Blessed with magnificent landscape, North Sumatra is still underdeveloped, which means tourist can expect to appreciate the charm in all its natural glory, free from being over-commercialised. With a population of slightly more than two million, Medan is a little smaller than the Javan cities of Bandung, Surabaya and Jakarta, but far bigger than most other cities in the Indonesian archipelago. Possessing many landmarks of Dutch architecture from its period as a Dutch colony as seen in its Water Tower which serves as the town’s icon along with City Hall and Titi Gantung bridge. Medan possesses a harmonious, multi-cultural society made up of many Southeast Asian ethnicities, from Chinese, Javanese, Toba-Batak, Minangkabau, Mandailing Batak, Karo Batak, Indians and many other ethnic minorities. Each ethnic group contributes to thousands of tasty, mouth-watering dishes found in every corner of Medan. They offer to locals and tourists alike dozens of food streets and hawker centres to suit their appetite at any time of the day. From the sweet Javanese cuisine, to delicious Batak grilled pork, to hot Padang dishes, to savoury Chinese noodles and spicy Indian curry, this various cuisines are available 24-hours a day. The city also offers great shopping, fine dining and a lively nightlife. Travelling around Medan is reasonably cheap with motor becaks, a motorised rickshaw or teksi to take you around the city. Medan is also a stepping stone to nearby popular touristic places like Brastagi, Sipisopiso and Sibolangit waterfall, Bukit Lawang and of course the stunning crater, Lake Toba.

ucked away at the 57th floor of Petronas Tower 3, is the famous Italian restaurant, Marini’s on 57. Well-known for its spectacular view of Petronas Twin Tower and the KL skyline, the restaurant prides on its innovative modern Italian cuisine. Helmed by the founder, Modesto Marini, who is a Chef himself, has developed a love affair with the culinary world. He proudly says the thing that makes the restaurant unique, is the methods used to attain the flavors and the different cooking techniques that are used to make the dish tasty and different.

Modesto is not satisfied to produce mediocre productions for his guests as he is always challenging all his Chefs to do what most dare not do for their guests in order for the food to taste good. Modesto’s culinary philosophy focuses on Italian contemporary dining with a twist in innovative methods using only fresh and quality produce. All the food from the spices to the sauce are prepared in-house. In honour of the four seasons in Europe, all dishes presented are prepared with seasonal ingredients sourced from all over the world.

Then the beautiful desserts glided in. We had Marini’s decadent desserts which are Pistachio cassis, avocado with basil and berry sorbet, Chocolate with lavender and almond flakes and white chocolate with chamomile honey and pepper and chocolate bon bon candy with salted butter. The desserts were rich and done creatively to appease the guest. If you are adventurous on tasting different types of dessert, then Marini’s on 57 is the place. Before we left the restaurant, we were given a complimentary fresh baked mini croissant to take back home. It is their signature gesture from Marini’s to continue to feed you even after you are done with your meals. Carrot and Mango Sorbet Roast Lamb
Stepping into the restaurant is like being in a surreal place with its beautiful ambience designed for upmarket luxury that exudes warmth and elegance, while its’ floor-to-ceiling windows and the glass roof provides great views of KL especially during sunset to the glittering night scene. The furniture is stylish and sleek, the room bordering on austere, but the view is very much the star of the show here. Besides the delicious cuisine, they also serve a short list of cocktails as well as a good selection of wine. MalindoMag team had the opportunity to try their spring menu beginning with the starters of Cod fish mousse with garlic anglaise and polenta chips, Goose liver terrine with rhubarb, roast eel and 25 years Balsamic, Asparagus with egg and hollandaise sauce, Tagliolini pasta with sea urchin and black garlic and Risotto with Sicilian red prawn, burrata cheese and Japanese Momotaro tomatoes. The dishes come in small portions but gives a burst of many different taste and texture that makes you want to savour every single item on the plate. It was also beautifully plated and the dishes were well combined to enhance your taste bud. One can literally appreciate the quality of the food as it was fresh and simply delightful to the palate.
Next we dived into the main course of Roast lamb, braised lamb and lamb sous vide served with peas and mint compote, Roast pigeon served with fava beans purée and leek tart and finally Sea urchin with black garlic, Maine lobster with leek, Hokkaido scallop with caviar and oyster with yoghurt and cucumber. As we finished the main courses, we were already very contented as we enjoied every bit of the cuisines which were sophisticated in flavour. Each course had its uniqueness in terms of the ingredients used. A must try is the Roast Lamb whereby the meat was tender and delicious. Asparagus with egg and hollandaise sauce

he Mandara Spa at Miri Marriot Resort & Spa is one of Miri’s bestkept secrets. Nestled in the lower ground floor of the hotel, the spa offers a wide range of Balinese spa services to accommodate their guest preference. The name Mandara comes from an ancient Sanskrit legend about the gods’ quest to find the elixir of immortality and eternal youth. Mandara Spa has embraced this legend with unique and exotic spa treatments and rituals that reflect the beauty, spirit and traditions of ancient, mystical times. With its beginnings on the beautiful island of Bali, Mandara Spa embodies the philosophy of the ancient healing arts that are passed on from generation to generation. The spa, offers traditional massages and facials, as well as nail services. Facilities at the spa include three double spa suites with private outdoor bath, steam shower and relaxation area; three single spa rooms; manicure and pedicure area and a retail boutique. A typical pampering session will begin with the serving of chilled peppermint-scented towels and aromatic ginger tea before an experienced therapist offers a choice of different essential oil blends for the massage. After which, you will be whisked off to indulge the 50-minute Balinese Massage treatment which helps relieve tension, improve blood flow, reduce stress and improve muscular and lymphatic systems using various pressure techniques. Before starting the treatment, you will be presented with four unique oil blends namely Island spice (clove, ginger and nutmeg oils), Harmony (mandarin, lavender and bergamot oils), Tranquillity (lavender, vetiver and cananga oils) and its signature Mandara (sandalwood, patchouli, cananga and ylang ylang oils) to choose from. The friendly therapist will then begin working on her magic as soon as she starts massaging the body. She applies just the right amount of pressure that will make you feel completely at ease. The essential oil slowly eases the knots and tension in the body, starting from your feet to the neck area. Needless to say, the results are instantaneous, leaving you feeling completely relaxed and rejuvenated by the end of the session. One should also try the famous Asian head massage. The shoulder, neck, upper back, arm and scalp massage is based on the ancient healing system of Ayurveda. A Thai poultice filled with exotic leafs, flowers and lime essential oil is dipped in warm coconut oil and used on the scalp, for scalp and hair care as well as complete relaxation. The therapist uses her deep thumb and finger pressure, friction and soothing strokes to help reduce the tension, improve circulation and flush out the toxins. It was the most soothing and tranquil effect as it will lull you to sleep after few minutes of starting the head massage. You will finish the treatment feeling completely revitalised and calm. While the Mandara Spa menu may differ from location to location, but the spas all share a common emphasis stressing on beauty, rejuvenation and exotic

P
assport, sun cream, toothbrush: these are items that none of us would dream of travelling without. But there’s one that’s just as indispensable, yet completely underrated. We mean, of course, the humble sarong. The sarong is adaptable, affordable, unbreakable and re-usable and it saves space. Its versatility makes it an item that smart travellers shouldn’t leave home without. Here’s our top ten use of a sarong: The shawl: Even in the hottest parts of the planet you will still need to keep warm, when the temperature drops at night, or when the air-conditioning is too cold to contend with. A sarong is small enough to throw in a handbag.
Clothing: There are hundreds of ways to wear a sarong in different styles. Wear it as a dress, skirt or a sash. You can even turn it into a bathing suit with a few clever folds, or wrap it around your head to keep the sun off.
The cover-up: Whether you’re trying to surreptitiously feed your baby in public, or visiting a religious shrine that requires you to cover your head and shoulders, the sarong is an essential piece of accessory.
Bag it: Never be caught out with more than you can carry. Simply knot the two corners at the short end together, repeat at the other end and you have a hammock shoulder bag.
The beach towel: A sarong is quick drying, lightweight and doesn’t take up the space of a typical beach towel. So whether you’re just heading to the pool for a quick dip, or lounging around on the beach, the sarong has a part to play.
In the car: When the sun gets too hot on the leather or vinyl seats, lay down a sarong. When parking your car, hang the sarong in the inside of the windscreen, using the sun visors, to help keep the car cool.
The first aider: Break an arm or sprain a wrist and a sarong can double as a triangular bandage to immobilise the injury until you get to hospital. You can even use it as a stretcher.
In public: Travelling somewhere ‘exotic’ where toilets don’t have doors and stores don’t have changing rooms? Your sarong is the ideal way to get some makeshift privacy.
For children: The sarong is great for swaddling babies, wiping up spills or converting into a sling/carrier, play tent or sun cover.
Out and about: Throw it on a table as a stylish tablecloth or on the floor as a picnic blanket.

I am a frequent flyer of Malindo Air as I am always busy with jobs in Kuala Lumpur and stay in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. I have tried many airlines but mostly locally and usually to and from Kota Bharu Airport. My first experience with Malindo Air was in the OD1241 flight from KB to Subang on the 27th July 2016, just a week after Raya and OD1232 from Subang to KB on the next day. The online booking was easy but the system seem not able to provide online check-in. So to avoid problems, I came early to the airport and the staff said that the system is improving and currently I need to check in through the counter on the day of departure, at no extra cost. The next day, I was waiting to go back to KB and had accidentally left my phone in the departure hall toilet while waiting to board. I asked the stewardess if I could search for my phone. Being aware that it was 5 mins to departure, the stewardess calmed me down and advised me to rest while she sought help from Malindo Air ground staffs. Within a few minutes, ground staff were kind enough to assist me in search for my phone from where I left it. They were helpful and went the extra mile to find the janitor on duty. Alhamdulillah, the janitor kept the phone safe and we rush back to the plane. The flight was delayed few minutes for departure but not once the pilot nor the stewardesses showed any remorse or blamed me for it. We were able to reach KB at desired arrival time. So, from this incident, I would like to compliment all the flight and the ground staff of OD1232 especially the stewardess and the two ground staff for their efficiency to tackle my problem with much profesionalism as well as kind understanding. I would like to say to them - keep up the good work and my sincere gratitude to all.
I am very glad and appreciated that Mr. Aru, call me back less than 10 mins, asking me what he can help. And after he told me to email the IC to him, he will try his best to help on this case. At least, he give me options, let me know what he can do and with no promise. Mr. Sashi, helpful, responsible, friendly, polite and professional. I really impressed on his service and his prompt response to my issue. He settled the issue within 1 hour, he waive the charges of the wrong spelling of the name for me.I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU, Mr. Aru. You are AWESOME!!

I was stranded when my maid did not turn up at Singapore Airport today at 9.01am. She was suppose to take Malindo Air OD801 to Singapore from Cochin via Kuala Lumpur. I was at the airport from 8am to 11am and the staff in Singapore informed that she did not check-in. Thank God I called Call Centre and one of your staff, Mr. Randal went an extra mile for me to check and provide me details on the arrival of my maid’s flight. My great appreciation and thanks to him. I salute your organization for recruiting staff who treat clients as special guests. Thank you.
