Good day dear esteemed passenger. The month of October beckons for a refreshed outlook on travel planning and essentials as we head towards the year-end holidays. I believe many of you have begun looking high and low for holiday treasures whether in Malaysia for eye-opening local travels, or abroad as far as to the mountain ranges of Kathmandu, Nepal. Here at Malindo Air, our team is planning ahead for the big travel season in November-December. You can expect to see the same unbeatable value-added fares that we have been offering all year long, plus new facilities and services added in, such as the new Executive Lounge at klia2’s main terminal building which we opened doors to last month. As the first airline lounge at the airport and as our very first dedicated lounge, expect nothing less than a convenient rest stop that is particularly secluded yet well-equipped with amenities at the airport. Read more about the Executive Lounge in this issue. Apart from services, much of our focus also goes to expanding our route network for the convenience of our passengers. On 25 October, two new routes take flight as we start direct flights from Penang to Singapore, and from Kuala Lumpur to Amritsar, India as the first airline to offer this route. On the 26th of last month, the first flight from Penang to

Trichy, India took off, again placing Malindo Air as the sole airline to fly the route. The cover story highlights our win at the recent KLIA Awards 2014 held on 18 September 2015 as the Airline of the Year (Passenger). Being barely two and a half years old, Malindo Air has come a long way since March 2013 as Malaysia’s first hybrid airline and is well on the right track to attaining more milestones and breakthroughs in the commercial aviation industry. Other interesting reads in this issue include our feature on top diving spots in Malaysia you wouldn’t want to miss scouring through for underwater treasures. Go-getters would also be fascinated by our story on Jakarta, the bustling city of Indonesia where interesting places lurk and entice the modern day urban travellers. The arrival of our thirteenth Boeing 737NG aircraft in the middle of last month brought our entire fleet to twenty-four, including eleven ATR turboprop aircraft that operate from our other hub in Subang Skypark, located even closer to the centre of Greater Kuala Lumpur. As our fleet grows, our ambition to widen our route network materialises along the way. All of us at Malindo Air are excited about what are upcoming next – new direct flights to Perth, Australia and Southern China. With this, I wish you a delightful and memorable journey with Malindo Air. We look forward to your patronage again. Until next time, safe travels! Chandran Rama Muthy CEO, Malindo Air

ast month, Malindo Air bagged the Airline of the Year (Passenger) 2014 award at the distinctive KLIA Awards 2014, a glitzy annual event introduced in 2006 by Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB) in recognition of the achievements by Malaysia Airports’ partners who have shown exceptional performance in areas such as passenger movement, growth, sales, international recognition and service. Malindo Air CEO, Chandran Rama Muthy said, “We are very honoured to be awarded as Airline of the Year (Passenger) for year 2014. This award is widely regarded as the industry’s benchmark for excellence. For us, the award clearly reflects a vote of confidence from the regional travellers, who acknowledge and appreciate our continuous drive for high-quality service. To be awarded with such a recognition really means something to be proud of for our 2,000-strong workforce across all ticketing stations and airport hubs in the region.” “This award is certainly a great honour for all of Malindo Air’s dedicated employees who have committed themselves wholeheartedly to the advancement of Malindo Air and have embraced the challenge together to achieve an excellent service standard. This award will serve as further motivation for Malindo Air and our employees to remain committed and improve further, while it will also mark another milestone as recognition of our sustained long-term development programme. Malindo Air will continually embrace new challenges to serve customers with more innovative products and highquality services,” added Chandran. “Our expansion programme is on track. In addition to our current 11 ATRs and 13 Boeing 737NGs, we are getting three more B737NGs before the end of the year. With more aircraft, we will be able to add more destinations. Our expansion has been nothing but exponential as we flew 900,000 passengers in 2013, our first year

of operation and it increased to 2.5 million in 2014. We anticipate a staggering jump to 4 million passengers by the end of 2015. Our coverage at a frantic pace to a total of 10 countries in the region by year-end contributes to the hike. More importantly, this also means we are opening up more job opportunities for Malaysians,” he said. Our turboprop operation began on 2 June 2014 with two ATR72600s based at Lapangan Terbang Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Subang (LTSAAS), which is about 30 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur and used to be country’s main airport before KLIA opened in 1998. LTSAAS now handles only cargo

Subang namely to the Indonesian cities in Sumatra. Apart from international expansion, we have created routes to link Malaysia’s first-tier cities on the Peninsula. This year, we have mainly focused on route expansion for our Boeing fleet with eight aircraft expected to be delivered and so far, five out of the eight aircraft orders have arrived and the rest are expected to arrive by December. We now proudly operate a robust fleet of six B737-900ER, seven B737-800NG and eleven ATR72-600 aircraft from our hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Subang. Naturally with a larger fleet and a growing regional network, there will

“In a world where low-cost travel dominates the market, and the unabated persistence of fullservice airlines continue to cater to a segment of luxury travellers, we strike a balance between affordability and indulgence.”

and turboprop commercial flights. The carrier initially operated B737-900ERs with services to domestic destinations followed by a number of international routes to India, Bangladesh and Indonesia. In 2014, Malindo Air began serving Thailand and Singapore. We believe the market growth potential in the region remains significant, as flight penetration rates are not as high as in the US and Europe, and there is plenty of room to grow. While in 2014 we concentrated on our domestic turboprop expansion, we resumed our growth in 2015 with increased frequencies to our current routes and new international operations as more B737NG deliveries arrive to our fleet expansion plan this year. Our domestic strategy has evolved to focus primarily on short-haul routes and turboprops, allocating only additional turboprop capacity to new shorthaul international routes from

be more job opportunities as our team strengths grows to over 2,000 employees at our headquarters and at all stations across Malaysia and abroad. All these in the hope of enhancing the job market for Malaysians and the overall industry as a whole. Our returning customers often choose Malindo Air because we offer a positive difference in airline service standards and more importantly, value for money. All our fares include complimentary check-in baggage allowance, which sets us apart from low cost carriers. The fares also include refreshments and in-flight entertainment in both Business and Economy class cabins as part of our hybrid product offerings, which makes it almost similar to full-service carriers. Wider Economy Class seat and the option of a Business Class cabin make a difference in attracting modern day millennial travellers who prefer added values and frills. MALINDOMAG | 13

Flying High We like to think of ourselves as proud ambassadors of Malaysia. The colours and material of our cabin crew’s uniform reflect the origins of our brand. Elegant, subtly accented and intricate in detail, our cabin crew take on their day-to-day tasks with pride. We believe that consistently good and safe service on both the ground and in the skies is imperative to being an excellent carrier. An undeniable fact of what brings Malaysians together is food. Our in-flight catering boasts a good selection of Malaysian signature dishes to reflect a diverse culture rich in heritage. As we fly to other countries, we play a role in representing not only our airline, but the Malaysian identity as well. Malaysians are indeed a helpful lot especially during times of need. Throughout the year, Malindo Air swiftly responded to calls for disaster relief. We have been providing support such as aid relief for natural disaster victims as far as Kathmandu and supporting local 16 | MALINDOMAG

communities and their causes. Malindo Air also actively participates in worldwide tourism campaigns endorsed by the Tourism Ministry of Malaysia and we are always in full support of stimulating inbound and domestic tourism through campaigns such as Visit Malaysia Year 2014 and Year of Festivals 2015. We will continue to boost capacity between the countries we fly to with Malaysia and share the same vision to help develop Malaysia as an ideal tourist destination in Southeast Asia. MOVING FORWARD Competition in the commercial airline industry gets more intense with price wars and routes shared, but Malindo Air’s attractive low fares with added value offerings will help capture sustainable load factors. Malindo Air’s brand is slowly gaining strength with increased publicity and visibility. 2015 is an important year for us where we will receive a total of eight Boeing 737NG aircraft to boost our current fleet. With

these new arrivals, we will be able to expand more aggressively in terms of routes and frequencies. This is more so demonstrated as starting this month, we will be starting flights to Amritsar, India, which is the first direct flight to the city from this part of the region. Meanwhile, direct services between Penang and Trichy, India have begun since last month in a complementing move to our other direct flights from Kuala Lumpur. The response so far had been encouraging given the route is still new, and we are excited to bring more tourists from Trichy to heritage-rich Penang. This year, apart from strengthening our network through increased frequencies to the lucrative markets of South Asia, we are planning to further expand our network to Southern China, Perth in Australia and other further points in Asia. Not to mention, we will also be playing a dynamic role in pushing for Malaysia Year of Festivals Campaign in 2015.

WANDERLUST DIVING IN MALAYSIA

WANDERLUST DIVING IN MALAYSIA

D

iving in Malaysia is like entering an underwater playground. From micro marine life to wartime shipwrecks, diving in the waters of Malaysia is an exploration of the liquid that would take you to a whole new level. There are over 3,000 species of fish in the waters of Malaysia and hundreds other types of corals, with new species of marine life constantly being discovered. With an average temperature ranging from a high of 31°C and a low of 24°C, Malaysia has among the most consistent weather in the region, with the longest favourable dive periods. In general, the best months to dive are between February to September, when the waters are calmest, sunny days are longer, whilst rainfall and humidity are relatively low. While the monsoon season compels the east coast islands of the Peninsular Malaysia to temporarily close from November to March, some of the most beautiful dive islands such as Mabul and Sipadan in Sabah are protected by the Borneo landmass and are able to remain safely open all year round. Depending on where you dive, the currents of Malaysian waters are so gentle that this activity becomes a relaxing and stress-relieving experience on its own. Layang- Layang Layang-Layang or ‘Swallow Reefs’ lies about 300km north of Labuan near the famous Spratly group of islands. It is a world-class diving and fishing paradise. Some rate it as the “big fish and wall diving Mecca” of Southeast Asia. Its coral walls plunge a staggering 2,000m down to the floor of the South China Sea. Its warm waters are crystal clear with excellent visibility. Large shoals of pelagic,

including massive numbers of barracuda, jacks and the hammerhead shark frequent these waters. The island is also a sanctuary to thousands of migratory raptors and is a delight to birdwatchers. Unbeknownst to many, LayangLayang has a 1,067m airstrip and a comfortable 90-room three-star resort. There are restaurants, full service recreational dive centres and a free form water pool, as well as souvenir shops. Getting There: Layang-Layang Island can only be accessed as part of an exclusive tour run by LayangLayang Island Resort departing from Kota Kinabalu, where Malindo Air flies to from klia2 21x weekly. Access to the resort is between February and October. Due to the flight timings, you may need to spend the first and last nights of your stay in Kota Kinabalu.

Sipadan The late Jacques Cousteau, the world-renowned oceanographer, described Pulau Sipadan as an untouched piece of art, while divers around the world have voted it as the best diving spot in the world. Malaysia’s only oceanic island is very small at only 30 acres in size. A 25-minute walk is all that is required to circle this Sabah Island on foot. Surrounded by crystal clear waters, this crown jewel is a treasure trove for some of the most amazing marine animals. Pulau Sipadan offers some of the best wall diving in the world. The water’s edge presents a drop of more than 609.6m (2,000ft) just 9.14m (30ft) from the beach, and all dive sites are within easy reach by boat. Thousands of marine life big and small inhabit Pulau Sipadan, making it one of the most exciting dive locations in the world. MALINDOMAG | 9

Kuching, Sarawak The capital city of Sarawak is growing in popularity as a destination for underwater enthusiasts. The historical Japanese World War II shipwreck off Kuching is one of the most recently discovered diving spots. You may explore numerous hard and soft corals covering the reefs such as anemones, sponges, crinoids, coral fishes, as well as other creatures that thrive here. Beneath the waters, the downward slope of the shore tapers out into calm bottoms that host the interesting marine reef life. One of them is Katori Maru Wreck, which is a huge coral formation with hard and soft corals in hues of orange and red. There are also two other shipwrecks lying between 18 to 22m underwater just waiting to be explored. Getting there: Malindo Air flies 14x weekly from klia2, Kuala Lumpur to Kuching, where you can travel by road to Santubong Beach area for accommodation. All dive sites are not more than 30 minutes away from shore and hotel accommodations around the Santubong Beach are comfortable yet affordable.

Getting There: Malindo Air flies from Subang 28x weekly and from klia2 14x weekly to Langkawi. Pulau Payar is located approximately 15 nautical miles west of Kuala Kedah, 19 nautical miles south of Langkawi Island and 32 nautical miles north of Penang. Pulau Payar Marine Park, Langkawi This marine park located in the islands of Langkawi, Kedah comprises four uninhabited islands – Payar, Lembu, Kaca and Segantang – and makes up Malaysia’s oldest marine park sanctuary. These islands, famous for the varied and colourful marine life that they support, offer the best diving sites on Peninsular Malaysia’s west coast. At Pulau Payar, the largest of the four islands, you will find the Marine Park Centre, which was set up and operated by the Fisheries Department. Here, you will find useful information on the do’s and don’ts while visiting this marine park. The waters of Pulau Payar have additional attraction, including artificial reefs built from

Pulau Redang With waters that sparkle in shades of aquamarine, Pulau Redang is a must-see for any traveller keen on exploring the best of Peninsular Malaysia’s diving. The reefs of the Redang archipelago are home to over 55 types of corals and 100 species of fish. The archipelago, located off the coast of Terengganu state, comprises Pulau Redang, Pulau Ling, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil and Pulau Lima. This group of islands boasts white sandy beaches, spectacular coral reefs and crystal clear waters, making it one of the best dive spots in the world. Among them, Terumbu Kili is a site that offers typical Redang delights. Some of the great coral variety here are soft corals, mushroom corals and gorgonian sea fans – attracting many red fish and its fair share of green turtles. Then there is Big Mount, considered by many to be among the best dive sites in

Peninsular Malaysia. Gigantic boulders dominate the vista with a carpet of hard and soft corals, sponges, sea anemones and their clownfish inhabitants. From its beautiful plateau, this site lures you downwards to the deep where more treasures abound. Getting There: Malindo Air flies from Subang to Kuala Terengganu 28x weekly and from there, catch a taxi to the Shahbandar Jetty. The recommended way to reach Redang is by speed boat and there are hourly ferry services from the jetty. The trip from Shahbandar Jetty to Pasir Panjang beach in Redang takes about 40 to 50 minutes on comfortable, large speedboats during the normal seasons, which is from March to October.

Nasi Uduk Commonly housed in a banana leaf parcel, nasi uduk’s main feature is rice that is immersed and cooked in coconut milk instead of water. This gives it a rich, creamy texture, which is complemented by flavours that are normally obtained from lemongrass, additional herbs and spices. It is dressed with servings of fried shallots right before it is served, and is usually eaten with a variety of side dishes – like ayam goreng (fried chicken) or deep-fried tempeh. FOOD MAPS Eatery of Choice: Nasi Uduk & Ayam Goreng Zainal Fanani Address: Jalan Kebon Kacang 8 No. 5, Tanah Abang, Jakarta Pusat, Indonesia

Nasi Rawon There’s a song in the musical ‘Hairspray’ which claims that “The darker the chocolate, the richer the taste.” The same notion applies in the case of nasi rawon—only, the term ‘chocolate’ should be substituted with ‘soup’ here. Renowned for its dark hue, the broth component of nasi rawon gets its signature colour from the keluak seed, which also equips the dish with a distinct flavour. Throw a few additional herbs and spices like lemongrass and ginger into the mix, along with servings of hearty beef and beef stock, and you have a strong dish that captivates from the very first bite. FOOD MAPS Eatery of Choice: Rawon Setan Mbak Endang Address: Jalan Mangga Besar Raya No.100A, Sawah Besar, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 11160, Indonesia

Sop Buntut Known in English as ‘oxtail soup’, sop buntut is one of Jakarta’s – and by extension, Indonesia’s – most luxurious comfort foods. Its main ingredient is oxtail, and this core component is cooked with various herbs, spices and vegetables to create a soup that is clear but flavourful. Its spicy and tangy notes make it apt for consumption with white rice, and it is best accentuated with sambal, as well as with a drizzle of lime juice. Bakso Not much needs to be said about bakso when one considers the manner in which its global fame has heightened over the years. Arguably Indonesia’s most-loved culinary creation, bakso is defined by juicy beef meatballs that are served in a flavourful broth with noodles and various vegetables. It can be eaten as either a meal on its own or as a snack between meals, and variants of it which utilise chicken or fish meatballs are also fairly popular food options. FOOD MAPS Eatery of Choice: Bakso Akiaw 99 Medan Address: Jalan Mangga Besar Raya No. 2B, Jakarta Barat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 11130, Indonesia

Ketan Ketan itself refers to the rich and creamy pudding that is the product of steaming glutinous rice with coconut milk. It is especially popular as a dessert, as its versatility allows it to be eaten with an almost endless list of toppings. It is regarded as a relative of sorts of Thailand’s famous mango sticky rice dessert, and is sometimes eaten as a part of another sweet treat called bubur ketan hitam (black glutinous rice pudding). FOOD MAPS Eatery of Choice: Ketan Duren Mbok-Nek-An-Cuk Fatmawati Address: Jalan RS Fatmawati 168E, Cilandak, Jakarta 12430, Indonesia

Sate Padang Perfect for late-night snacking or supper, sate Padang is a timeless classic that has been enjoyed by generations of Indonesians – both in and out of Jakarta. It is mainly beef-based, although variations which use chicken and lamb are known to exist. Pieces of beef are diced and skewered for grilling, after they have been boiled with various herbs and spices like galangal and turmeric. Once the meat is removed, the remaining stock is used to make sate Padang’s signature dipping gravy. FOOD MAPS Eatery of Choice: Sate Padang Ajo Ramon Address: Jalan Cika jang Raya No.72, Kebayoran Baru, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12170, Indonesia

Rijsttafel Rijsttafel may not come across as sounding very Indonesian, and that is because it is actually a term of Dutch origin. It refers to a dining style in which rice is cooked in several different forms and eaten with a vast variety of side dishes, the latter of which can go up to over 30 in number. This form of dining was introduced to Indonesia by the Dutch during their colonisation of the country as a means of showcasing their wealth, while enjoying myriad flavours and textures at one go. FOOD MAPS Eatery of Choice: Oasis Restaurant Address: Jalan Raden Saleh Raya No. 47, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10330, Indonesia

There you go! Ten absolutely delectable culinary wonders that depict some of Indonesia’s best flavours, all within the comforts of wonderful Jakarta. Kudos to your Customer Care representative by the name of Novack. I called Malindo Air’s Customer Care to enquire about my flight itinerary, which I didn’t receive after successfully making payment for my booking. Despite my tantrums when finding out that the payment did not go through although the amount has been deducted from my account, he attended to my call in a very polite and calm manner. He showed his concerns over the issue and tried checking on the status until I received my itinerary via email. He deserves a “pat on the back” by the management. Thank you. – Rostam Albakri Affendi, Malaysia

I would like to write a testimonial on my appreciation for Lead Flight Attendant Nicole on her professional service displayed during my trip on flight OD1175 from Penang to Subang on 2 May 2015 at 8.30pm. Thank you and keep it up! – Mohd Shaffik Affandi Zainol, Malaysia

I would like to take this opportunity to convey my highest appreciation on the fantastic service that I received onboard my trip from Delhi to Kuala Lumpur via OD206 on 1 August. Comfort was of great value and the service and hospitality of your cabin crew was awesome. They were all well-mannered and went out of their way to prepare a cup of Teh Tarik for me during my meals. I’m a frequent traveller on Malindo Air since it first launched its inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur to Bali almost two years ago and it has been my number one airline-ofchoice to the destinations that are covered by Malindo Air. I hope to see more routes and the continuation of excellence in your service and quality. – Dr. Aly Alias Stephen Nah, Malaysia

This is my first experience with Malindo Air and it was a very good one. I had a very comfortable seat with good legroom, better than some airline’s narrow bodied aircraft. There’s a good variety of inflight entertainment, but what makes me like this airline is the interior design, especially the mood lighting and sky interior. It is very calm and enjoyable, just like a full service carrier. Malindo Air is highly recommended and I would fly this airline again. – Farhan, Malaysia

I would like to express my gratitude to Malindo Air’s management for such efficient assistance in searching for my missing luggage. Glad that it has been found and thank you so much. I’m really impressed with your service. – Mohammad Irshad, Malaysia

rriving at Skillet @ 163 in Fraser’s Place, I couldn’t help but notice the simple yet mod touches of yellow frames in its décor that reminds me very much of the National Geographic Channel, perfectly complementing the tastefully done interior. Seated upstairs, I had a bird’s eye view of the kitchen which openly exhibited the chefs, carefully plating one dish at a time. Watching the kitchen staff at work got me excited to order as I strongly believe that food that are prepared with passion are usually spoon-licking-good. Skillet @ 163 has an allday dining menu as well as a dinner menu, both promising to tantalise your precious taste buds. To start off my casual fine dining experience, I ordered the Vietnamese Spring Roll and Scotch Egg for appetisers, as well as their signature Virgin Mango Margarita and Cucumber Cooler. Led by the highly experienced Chef Raymond Tham, the team at the restaurant prepared dishes that arrived on my table in style. The beautifully plated Vietnamese Spring Roll was a breath of fresh air as the tasty prawn and herb fillings were wrapped in thinly sliced white radish, while the original spring roll skin was deep fried to add a crunchy texture to the dish. But nothing beats the Scotch Egg, which was my favourite dish throughout the meal. An Asian take of the popular British snack, the Scotch Egg at Skillet @ 163 sent out a beautiful aroma that would make the hungry go hungrier as it made its way to my table. Served over a bed of Asian slaw that’s garnished with pickled bunga kantan and drizzled with Skillet Signature Dressing, the dish greatly defines East meets West as it is packed with familiar flavours to the Asian palate. The flavours from the well-seasoned minced chicken wrapping the softcentered egg is nicely balanced with the light acidity from the

salad, making it a refreshing dish that I’d crave for, even weeks after dining at the restaurant. When it comes to the mains, making a choice is not going to be easy. But the Pan Seared Salmon definitely won me over. Like most pan seared salmons, the one at Skillet @ 163 has its skin crisped to perfection and is served on a piece of potato roesti, which I mistaken as vermicelli because of the texture of the finely grated potato. Plated with finesse, the dish presented a mix of sweet, sour and spicy from the kaffir lime dressing – a unique taste that sets their pan seared salmon apart from the rest.

Other mains that I would recommend you to try are the Signature Dried Shrimp Aglio Olio, Chicken Mille-Feuille and the Braised Australian Brisket, which carries a hint of bitterness from the Belgium cocoa mass. Desserts was the part I was anticipating most as Chef Raymond is primarily a pastry chef who’s laboured at the likes of Surrey’s Wentworth Golf Club and the world’s largest chocolate company, Callebaut. Preparing my

taste buds for the two desserts I’ve selected, Chef Raymond whisked up a Mango and Passion Fruit Liquid Nitrogen Sorbet for me to cleanse my palate. Then I had the Peanut Butter Mousse before ending my meal with the much talked about Textures of Chocolate, which came with fun theatrics. Serving the dessert himself, Chef Raymond first poured liquid nitrogen into the centre of the chocolate sphere, which contained liquid white chocolate. This made a surprising popping sound, reminding me of a popcorn machine at the funfair. I was then handed a hammer to crack open the chocolate sphere, revealing a handful of white chocolate popcorn begging to be eaten. But Chef Raymond’s not done just yet. He poured a generous amount of sinful melted chocolate around the popcorn before announcing that it was time for me to dig in. With every mouthful, I tasted the sweetness with a tinge of bitterness from the dark chocolate and sour from the raspberries, accompanied by many different textures – silky, smooth, crunchy, grainy, melt-in-your-mouth and many different feelings that words just can’t describe. Ending that meal on a high note, I couldn’t help but wonder where I could find desserts that could top the ones I had at Skillet @ 163. I guess for now I will just have to come back until I find the next best dessert spot in the neon city.

Of prominence, and confusion to firsttime Ferrari owners, is the carbon fiber bridge where a traditional gear lever would sit. Two of the buttons on it work the forward and reverse gears; the one labelled “Launch” isn’t recommended for novices. Everything else required to drive the car is housed in the steering wheel, in button form, just like a Formula One car – the ignition, horn (notice where your thumbs rest), turn signals, headlights, suspension setting and even wipers (there are no control stalks in this Ferrari). The most mechanical thing on the steering is the mannetino dial, which has three drive settings – Comfort, Sport and “Diaper, Please”. The top of the steering houses shift lights and gear changes can be done with the paddle shifters. While in between the air-conditioning vents sits a tap-friendl y display that shows information about the turbo, as well as the ambient temperature. More driving information is displayed in the meter binnacle. It takes a while to get used to the controls and display layouts, but once that’s sorted, you feel a sense of appreciation for what’s available.

The Drivetrain The “T” is for “turbocharged” making the Cali T Ferrari’s first force-inducted car in a long time; the last ones being the GTO and F40 in the ‘80s. The car is powered by a compact and quiet (by Ferrari standards) 3.9L twin-turbo engine with 522hp and 755Nm of torque. Thankfully, the inevitable turbo lag has largely been negated by the engineers, giving this car

The Drive The Cali T is designed as an easy-driving Ferrari to captivate the beginners. And rightly so, it drives like one, but without much loss of scarlet magic. The improved adjustable suspension system allows for everyday-driving convenience. It’s not as planted as the more extreme 458, but it’s the manner in how the ride and handling has been packaged that makes it a winner, at least for the beginner. Whether you’re stuck in rush hour crawls or gunning it on open roads, it performs with great aplomb. And in plush comfort too. The steering may feel light, but that’s tuned for its target buyers and their driving. Thanks to turbocharging, the car is immensely, but controllably fast. The maximum torque is only available in seventh gear – a cruising gear. This is to mitigate turbo lag and improve fuel economy (official: 10.5 liters/100km) and emissions. Power in the first three gears is regulated by its Variable Boost Management system at lower torque, but increased at higher gears up to its peak of 755Nm. That’s why acceleration response in low gears is almost immediate just like a Ferrari should be. The car doesn’t seem to run out of steam; it just goes as you want it to, at the speed you want it to. It doesn’t get any easier. The Buyers The Cali T is a Ferrari and not a Ferrari. It’s the first step by regular car owners to the scarlet world. If you’re looking for a fun weekend car that you can also drive to work, this one helps you paint everywhere red. MALINDOMAG | 37

RADAR TRAVEL HOROSCOPE

October Fiesta Leo (23 July – 22 August)

Libra

(23 September – 22 October)

Source: Tripbase ®

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

Steer clear off places you’ve been to before... even if they are your “favourites.” Anything “different” or “other” will satisfy your inner explorer, awakened by the Libra Sun this month. Grab low-maintenance, adventurous pals who don’t mind feeling out-of-place, or getting dirty. Go outside your cultural comfort zone and learn local customs – bonus if there is an adrenalinepumping aspect to the journey.

You’re your own best companion as the Libra Sun brings out your independent nature. A visit to that ex-pat pal or friend who just moved is perfect, but book a hotel so your “me time” doesn’t mean answering to anyone. You’ll love lingering in cafes and hotspots and even scoring dinner dates with new friends and romantic interests. Watch your tendency towards extravagance. Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Congratulations on the hard work to establish new routines in your life. You don’t need to blow the diet or have vacation interrupt your healthy flow. Embrace your cosy homebody mood and rent a cottage or condo with a kitchen and prep most of your meals yourself. With planets in your nature-loving sixth house, you’ll enjoy the outdoors, so try planting yourself near a pumpkin patch or apple orchard.

Let your inner child come out and play. You don’t need to go far as home is where the action is this month. Pack it in with a staycation full of science museum exhibits, history tours, arts, cooking classes and touristy-fun offerings. You’ll enjoy seeing things through the eyes of babies, so make sure to invite your family and your friends’ kids.

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

Keep saving for that special purpose, but let Mars and Venus align in your sector of short journeys and take a one or two night getaway. Use your gift of finding freebies, but avoid being so cheap by treating yourself to a great meal with your friends. Choose your company wisely; friends with broad subject matter repertoire will be the most satisfying as long as they’re not overspending snobs or gossipers.

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November)

Mars and Venus in Scorpio give you magnetic appeal, so head for laid-back hotspots on water where you take a morning run in shorts, afternoon dip in a daring, new swimsuit and nightlife in sandals. Whether single or spoken for, flirting is as essential as breathing. Wink at the waitstaff when they hand you a Pina Colada.

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

Gemini (21 May – 20 June)

Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December)

Aries (21 March – 19 April)

Cancer (21 June – 22 July)

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

You’re ready for intense bonding with a cherished friend; a vacation a deux is perfect for re-solidifying connections. Make every moment count, so stop by the airport bar to clink Bloody Mary glasses or turn a road trip into a series of photo ops from wacky places along the way. Be careful that all that talk doesn’t stir up drama, keep it on track with the right busy places that still allow for good conversation.

Pack black for those late nights, as the sexy night owl in you is ready to romp. Your energy is high so pick a hot spot that also has shop till you drop potential for some hardcore retail therapy. Opt for a boutique hotel down one of those streets that most tourists never find, or be annoyed when gawkers get in your way on the sidewalk.

Let your hair down and enjoy a little guiltfree PDA! With planets lining up in your romance and relationship houses, take a couple’s trip or consider that single’s cruise you were previously too cool to try. Treat your eyes to real live feasts and shut down the PC so you and your romantic partner or wingman can truly enjoy the view.

Go go go! The pace picks up again, just the way you like it, giving you the chance to burn off that pent-up energy. With planets piling up in your fifth house of celebration, glamour and romance, a dressy destination has your name written all over it. Take a little time off, but don’t go overboard towards quiet spas or sleepy towns – you’ll be bored to tears.

Face it, you’re feeling fried and you’ve got nothing left to give. Retreat and restore. Yes, you can sit still and enjoy that quiet spa vacation, that mountain lodge, or quaint sleepy town. There’s no escaping the fact that you’re a people person, so consider a group experience, like a yoga retreat or sweat lodge with intriguing people you’ve never met before.

You’re on top of the world, career-wise, so keep that ambitious energy with a business-centered trip “on the grid” with reliable Internet. Choose fellow gogetters, combine a seminar or lecture with an already scheduled trip and don’t let anyone talk you out of bringing your laptop. You can limit the hours you work per day and still get that new assignment.

INSIDER’s MALINDO LOUNGE

“SPOIL YOU” PERKS of Airport

Lounges in Cities around the World by Karen Low

T

ravelling always brings about a charge of excitement, even for the perennial citizens of the world. Nowadays, you can plan your travels at the click of your fingers with frequency, connectivity, competitive pricing, as well as easy access to purchase stays and ticket, making a traveller’s journey so much more superfluous. I recently spent an afternoon curled up on a plush sofa bed, sipping on an iced Affogato with a nibble of biscuits, cheese and some fruits on the side, accompanied by a panoramic view of day turning into night with a beautiful sunset loomed ahead of me. Where was I? I was not in some princely beach resort famous for its sunsets nor was I lounging in a city duplex mansion above ground level. I was stranded at an airport. For a delayed passenger, all your fears and anxiety are meant to dissolve the moment you set foot into the realm of an airport lounge. The lounge is a sanctuary from noise, people and hubbub. There is joy to be found when you meet with a flight delay and these are a few of bourgeois treats

that you will be able to enjoy at some of the airport lounges in cities around the globe: • In Bangkok, you can experience relaxing traditional Thai massages and spas to prep you for your long haul journey. • There is an oxygen bar in London where you are privy to sessions of scented “pure” oxygen. • In case you are musically inclined and dream up a tune whilst waiting for your flight. Guess what? In London, there is a recording studio and a digital editing room for music mixing! • Doha offers luxurious Jacuzzi and sauna treatments to soothe those weary limbs. • In Hong Kong, private cabanas are readily available. The trappings include day beds to catch forty winks complete with bathtubs, showers and rooms to get work done. • To make more music, guests who are “aspiring musical virtuosos”, please head to Seoul. There is a piano available to run those dizzy fingers by for a soothing prep before taking a long flight.

Back home in Kuala Lumpur, your lounge experience may not be as extravagant as having an oxygen bar or a recording studio, but the Malindo Lounge assures you the warm hospitality that Malaysians are known for. Malindo Air offers a quietly discerning lounge, which is comfortably outfitted at klia2 for all Business Class international passengers. Amongst the offerings in the lounge are free Wi-Fi and internet access on computers that are lined up at a work area with a ceiling-tofloor window, boasting an amazing view of the runway. Guests are also treated to a good choice of light meals and refreshment with full Malaysian and international flavours. Depending on the time of day, a variety of delicacies are served for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. For those with sweet tooth, a variety of delectable cakes and local desserts are served for your enjoyment. Be it overseas or back home, the mystère of exploring an airport lounge is definitely more exciting than sitting straight up in the waiting room. Bon voyage! MALINDOMAG | 47

IN-FLIGHT WiFI & MOBILE

Future of Connection As technology catches up with rapid advancement, we see more and more people finding the need to stay in touch.

i

n the current smartphone generation, we’re seeing a huge increase in demand to be connected all the time. Almost every passenger carries a mobile device and expects to be able to use their phone at the airport, abroad and even onboard the aircraft. Malindo Air’s inflight connectivity service allows travellers to do just that; passengers simply turn on their mobile device to connect to the network and are billed directly by their mobile operator. So how many people use their phones inflight? Since it was launched, we’ve seen 28 million successful connections to the network, over 43 million text messages sent or received and more than 1.4 million MB of data used. Using your phone inflight is becoming more and more popular; in the first six months of 2015, we saw a 56% year-onyear increase in users. There was also a 47% increase in texts sent or received. Data remains the most popular service with a

157% increase in MB data used, compared to the same period in the previous year. By the end of 2014, AeroMobile saw a 21% increase in the number of countries where we have roaming agreements – we now have 314 agreements live worldwide. Recent Asian roaming agreements that have been added to our network include Dtac Thailand and Telkomsel Indonesia. Travellers in Asia are also realising the benefits of being able to text, tweet or call inflight – in the first six months of 2015 we saw a 147% year-on-year increase in the number of passengers using the network on flights to Asian destinations. It’s definitely an exciting time for inflight connectivity in Asia and we expect it to grow even further! In response to this demand, more and more airlines are taking up AeroMobile’s service. As inflight connectivity continues to become more widely available, we’re also seeing a corresponding surge in customers switching on inflight.

Taking Social To Another Level Ever felt disconnected when you’re travelling? You can leave your worries at the aircraft door – Malindo Air now offers paid access to WiFi and roaming network onboard selected flights*. Send a text message, chat online, update your status on Facebook, tweet your followers or call your loved ones that you’re coming home. Stay connected and updated like on ground. With 30-minute to 12-hour packages to choose from, there’s one for every need. It’s as easy as logging into the WiFi network at a café or restaurant! Purchase any one of the four passes available and follow the login instructions. Voila! * Aircraft type Boeing 737900ER only.

IN-FLIGHT HIGH FLYER

Pure

Passion Senior Flight Attendant, Noor Aieshah bt Fadzil flies high to deliver her best to the passengers of Malindo Air. By Nicolette Ng

A veteran at Malindo Air, Noor Aieshah has always had the passion for hospitality, even before starting her career as a flight attendant. Despite pursuing her studies in Hotel Management, she soon realised that her career in hospitality could take off beyond the hotel field and decided to take a chance in the airline industry instead. And the rest they say is history. How long have you been a flight attendant? It has been more than five years ago when I first took the pledge to give my best as a flight attendant and the end of 2015 marks my three years of service with Malindo Air. I’m proud to be one of the longest serving flight attendant with the airline and I’m excited to see how far I could grow with them. What do you love most about your job? Everything about it. I enjoy serving the passengers and seeing a smile on their faces when I deliver to their satisfaction. With Malindo Air, I also get the chance to go to new places because the airline is constantly growing and expanding its routes. And by going to all these new places, I get to meet new people and learn about their culture as well. It opens my eyes to 50 | MALINDOMAG

the amazing things this world has to offer. What would you say is the hardest thing about being a flight attendant? Every job has its ups and downs, but what matters most is how you deal with it. As a flight attendant, we are bound to deal with different characters and when I face someone who is difficult, I am required to be firm in maintaining my integrity and professionalism while keeping a smile on my face to make sure the other passengers don’t feel uncomfortable. It’s not easy, but my passion for the job helps keep me going. What are the criteria that make a good flight attendant? A good flight attendant must be a positive thinker, has good attitude, willing to learn new things and has the ability to be a good listener and follow instructions. These are just some of the criteria, but there are more to the title than just these. Can you describe to us a day in your work? When I’m on duty, I need to spend at least three hours to prepare myself for work before taking on an hour’s drive to get to the airport from home. Reporting for duty, I will meet a new set of team

members and brief them on the flight details, including checking on the mandatory documents that we need to bring along. Then we

will proceed to the aircraft and do some compliance check such as safety equipment, security check and more, to make sure that we are ready for departure. Once we land, we have to ensure all passengers disembark in an orderly manner and do a random check on the aircraft before leaving. All of us shall then proceed to the office and I need to lead a post-briefing. How do you cope with work-life balance? When I’m off duty, I make sure I spend time with my family and friends. Besides taking my children to school, I also spend time with my mother, going to the market to do some shopping and entertaining the family. With my friends, we like to go for a movie or sing our hearts out at karaoke and when we’re feeling a little adventurous, we’ll go hiking. What is the most memorable experience in your career? Every working adult appreciates a promotion and I was ecstatic when I was selected for one. It goes to show that Malindo Air recognises my efforts and trusts me. I also appreciate it when the passengers give good feedbacks and compliments on my crew members and myself, as we all work as a team. Any silly moments onboard that you’d like to share with us? I remember once when a passenger who was sound asleep, suddenly woke up and rushed to the lavatory only to find that it was actually the coat closet. It was funny and we all had a good laugh throughout that flight. How long do you see yourself in this line of work? For as long as I am able to work. There certainly is a “due date” for us flight attendants, but I wish to continue my service with Malindo Air in the future. Perhaps I would be a flight attendant instructor as I enjoy teaching as well. MALINDOMAG | 51
