On the note of expansion plans, we will be the first of Boeing’s customer to operate the 737 MAX aircraft in commercial service this month. By being the world’s first carrier to fly passengers on this state-of-the-art innovation, this milestone is part of our efforts to continue to innovate and provide our customers the best flying experience. I have to thank my dedicated employees that has steered the company to greater heights. Without them, these achievements will not be possible. A very timely month as we also celebrate Labour Day with a long weekend which calls for a well-deserved break. The celebration subsequently continues as we celebrate an important role in our lives - Mother’s Day. What better way to cherish and pamper them than flying them on our premium service to their desired destination. Do
flip through and grab the special flight promotion in conjunction with this day. On another note, we have some interesting articles for your reading pleasure. Our cover story gives you an in-depth scene of solo traveling that is increasingly becoming popular and is seen as a need for many in today’s world. Our Voyage section highlights two very interesting factors to explore, food in Bangkok and nightlife in Singapore. For a short getaway, these two cities might just be the thing you need for an almost mid-year getaway. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all celebrating Buddhist, a prosperous Wesak Day, and to Muslims around the world, a joyous and blessed Ramadan (holy fasting month) which will begin end of this month. Have a pleasant journey and happy reading!

eady to see the world by yourself? It may be daunting initially to travel alone to a foreign land but the experience is a guaranteed liberating journey wherein more people are jumping into the bandwagon of travelling solo. Discovering new places, people, cultures and scenery, opens the mind to the world around us. It is exciting, humbling, empowering, liberating and endlessly rewarding for most travellers. Solo travel is something everyone should try at some point in their life. There is no better way to get to know who you are as a person than by spending time with yourself away from the distractions of life. Travel with another is fun, supportive, you get to share the moment and laugh together but it involves compromises. Alone, you are the captain of your own destiny, you choose the itinerary you want to follow. Go where your heart desires. You have far more flexibility and are therefore open to lots of new and exciting opportunities. When travelling solo it is far easier to meet new people and make friends. You will probably find that people start talking to you without even having to initiate a conversation. It is easier to start talking to someone who is on their own than it is to start a conversation with a group of people.

Here Are Some Pros and Cons of Solo Travelling PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Travelling alone has many, many benefits and it has definitely helped people to grow as a person. Travelling solo forces you to become independent, make decisions and step out of your comfort zone on a regular basis - something you would not necessarily do if you were not travelling alone. When you travel solo, you have nobody to rely on but yourself and basically that pushes you to learn how to go about in another country.
Meeting People
One of the biggest benefits to travelling alone is how easy it is to meet people on the road or even where you are staying. Sometimes you end up meeting interesting people who will eventually become good friends, business partners or even life partner in future. Life is full of unexpected turns and there is always that element of surprise when you travel alone. You will also find that when travelling solo, you are much more approachable than when you are in a group.
Freedom
Another great benefit to solo travel is not having to compromise on your travels. You can wake up whenever you want, eat whatever you want, decide to have a lazy day, or choose to go on an adventurous journey. You get to decide the itinerary of the day. You do not have a time schedule to follow. Go where the wind takes you.
Social Skills
Travelling by yourself can be helpful in improving your social skills as it builds your confidence when you navigate into unfamiliar cities, converse with strangers and figure out how to get from one place to another. You will gain confidence as you meet more and more people and get used to introducing yourself and making conversation.
10 | M ALIND OM AG | M AY 2 017
SOUL SEARCHING
If you are looking for some solitude time for self-reflection or gain peace, then this would be most ideal time for you. You will get to know yourself better than you ever did, learn what truly makes you happy and what you need to work on to improve as a person. It can often be challenging to face these truths but learning to overcome them is all part of the beneficial process. You can spend time working on a hobby, doing leisurely activities like reading books in coffee shops or simply sitting and meditating. When you are on your own, you can do whatever you want without having to worry about pleasing anyone.
Lonely
Travelling alone for long periods of time with no friends alongside can be draining, and you may struggle with issues of loneliness especially if you are shy. Not having someone to share all those amazing experiences with can be disheartening. Homesickness is something many travellers deal with, and the effects can be amplified when you are alone.
EXPENSIVE
Travelling alone nearly always works out to be much more expensive than traveling as a couple or in a group. As a couple or group, you can share meals, stay in private rooms and split many of your expenses. You will also often find that for private tours you will be charged a lot more if you plan on taking it alone. As a solo traveller, you will have to pay a single room supplement if you are going to be in private rooms, you have to stay in Airbnb apartments without having someone to split the costs with and in some parts of the world, you will even have to pay more to eat alone in a restaurant. So do take that into consideration when you are travelling alone.
RISK FACTOR
Travelling alone can sometimes be dangerous depending on which country you are visiting and more so if you are a woman. Choosing the correct destination to explore is important when you are travelling solo. You are more vulnerable when you are on your own, because you only have yourself looking after you. When you are in a group, you will have other people to look out for scams, to steer you away from danger or prevent you from getting lost.

Testimonials of Solo Travellers Celebrity Fara Fauzana, 36, loves travelling alone. She has been to many countries on a solo trip exploring nature or just a relaxing holiday by the beach or be like the locals and experience the lifestyle.Solo trips are one of the best trips. It is Fara’s private soul-searching time where she gets to be herself away from everybody and her busy schedule. Normally she will take a month off and venture out to a country and try to live like the locals. She avoids doing touristic stuffs. Fara is more interested to see how people in other countries live and go about their daily life. So she gets to know the locals and be like them. She indulges in the local food, learn new dishes, learn to speak a bit of their language and get involved in their celebrations. It is truly a beautiful experience. One does not get certain knowledge by reading the books or watching television about the country. You got to get out there and be part of their community. She has gained friends and families from different countries that are close to her heart. Solo travelling broadens your perspective and the way you view life. When you travel with friends, it is fun but you have to follow the group’s activities and you do not meet anyone whereas travelling alone gives you the freedom to do anything you want. You learn to be tough, vigilant and independent. You also learn to be street wise and acquire some surviving skills. To Fara, it is more of empowering herself besides enjoying her travels. 12 | M ALIND OM AG | M AY 2 017

Ken Vin Ooi, 28, took the bold decision to travel alone to Kathmandu, Nepal. He had always wanted to visit an exotic country like Nepal but none of his friends were interested. He decided not to wait around and booked his tickets and went to Nepal. It was Ken’s first solo trip and it was also the most amazing trip of his life as he not only met other interesting people along the way but he interacted with the locals and was quite interested with their cultures and traditions. Besides it was an eye-opening journey for hime as he discovered a lot of things about himself and was a total de-stress from his hectic job. Besides the beautiful sceneries that takes the breath away, he also got to enjoy their local delicacy and even got invited by a local family to have dinner with them. It was a memorable experience to be able to join the locals and see their lives. His first solo experience has totally widened his knowledge and now he tries to do a solo trip at least once a year.
travelled to Phuket on her first solo trip. The experience opened her eyes to new possibilities. Travelling solo was in the bucket list but never had the guts to do it. After hearing some wonderful stories from her friends, she decided to take the plunge. In the beginning she was bored to death, by the second day, she had to make the effort to come out of her shell and start making friends. She realised along the way, she also got to know herself better. She did things out of her comfort zone like hitching a ride with a complete stranger and took the decision to follow some people whom she just met for a whole day of island hopping. Being by yourself alone makes you friendly and you end up surprising yourself. The downside of travelling alone is during the night especially for ladies, you have to be careful where you are going. It is not advisable to stay out till late night. Every time she travels solo, it is like a self-esteem boost, as she is reminded of all that she is capable of. Travelling with others, you tend to rely on different people for different things. Travelling alone has showed her how to stop being stagnant and keep moving to experience more with whatever time left.
Azima Musa, 40, has taken a few trips alone and finds it quite enlightening to travelling solo. Whether you end up loving travelling solo or decide it is not really your thing does not matter. Regardless, you will end up having an enriching experience. Because really, the worst case scenario is you feel some awkwardness, while also discovering what you are truly capable of and immersing yourself fully in a new culture. And if you really feel uncomfortable, you can always hide in a comfortable hotel room or change your ticket to board the next flight home. Azima was all for the adventure and loved the idea of having total freedom as before that she was always travelling with family or her friends and she has to compromise on everything. This time, she did all the things on her wish-list like visiting the museums, reading a book half the day at a cafĂŠ and shopped till she dropped. It is refreshing to spend time to do things you have put off for a long time due to commitment or just being busy. Solo trips for Azima now are for doing activities and things she longed to do and meet new people as she travels. At the end of the day the hardest thing about travelling solo is making the decision to go. Once you are on your way, you will feel great about it.

Rosyam relishes the time when he was the go-to hero for a string of local productions, playing main characters be it gangster, street racer or romantic hero. When newer faces began getting the attention of movie and TV audiences, Rosyam felt that his popularity had begun to wane. “The need to stay relevant is key and if one wants to stay relevant in showbiz, there is no denying that an actor needs to create his own branding. While branding is not exactly a new thing, not many have been successful. “Just

In the Kollywood production, Rosyam plays gangster Legau, who is an enemy of the titular character Kabali played by Rajinikanth. While to many, playing similar characters from one production to another may be deemed as falling into a stereotype, he believes otherwise. “This is another way of creating my branding. I have been very selective in accepting acting offers Rosyam wants to prove to Malaysians that they are similar to Bollywood or even Hollywood, where the older an actor gets, the more they are appreciated and given opportunities to act in films and television series. The actor believes that he has somewhat kick started his journey towards the trend with his role in KL Gangster 2 and Ballistik. Those films gained good box office collection. He hopes that it will enable other actors and actresses of similar age to be given plum roles. But at the same time, they should take care of their appearances, health and reputations in order to be ‘employed’.

Tom Yum
Any visitor should not leave Bangkok without experiencing both the taste and scent of Thailand’s national dish, Tom Yum Goong (sometimes pronounced Tom Yum Kung). The original taste of Tom Yum features a blend of fragrant lemongrass, chilli, galangal, lime leaves, shallots, lime juice and fish sauce giving it that unique combination of spicy, salty, sour and sweet flavours. A generous portion of prawns (or any seafood) makes it an even more perfect soupy dish. Whether it is the clear soup version or the version with coconut milk added, halal version of Tom Yum is available at places like Tomyam Paa Nga (near to Citin Pratunam Hotel) , Saman Islam (Phahonyothin Road) and Makyah Restaurant (Phetchaburi Road).

A common snack across South East Asia, the star ingredients of Thai’s version of spring rolls are glass noodles, carrot and bean sprouts. Wrapped and deep fried on the spot, the vegetarian version of spring rolls can be found at most street food areas and at tourist areas.
Mango and Sticky Rice Grilled Prawn and Squid
Salted & Grilled Fish
A common sight at almost all street food spots within Bangkok, the grilled fish or Pla Pao often attracts the attention of passer-by especially tourists. It is fun to watch the street food vendor in action as they take multiple sizes of fish coated with flour and salt and turn them into delicious charcoal grilled fish for the customers. Served with fish sauce, lime and chili as dip, the inner part of the fish is usually soft and moist and goes well with rice and other seafood dishes. While this dish is available at a lot of places, the stall in front of Rajamangala Stadium has a halal status which you can also enjoy other dishes without any doubt.

If snacks are something you are looking for, give the grilled squid and grilled prawn a try. Grab a couple of this delicious on-the-go food and just enjoy it by the roadside while absorbing the ambience of Bangkok’s busy streets.
On the sweeter side, this is a must to try when it comes to Thai’s best dessert. It is known that Thailand produces one of the best and sweetest fresh mangoes hence it makes sense to match it with equally tasty sticky rice and coconut syrup. The outcome is Thailand’s awesome Mango and Sticky Rice dessert which is available everywhere in Bangkok at a great price.

at The Straits Estate
VE
Hotel & Residence (VE Bangsar South) welcomes the upcoming holy month with an assortment of Arabian selections and local favourites that highlights the unique blend of Malaysia’s cultural flavours in their all-day dining restaurant, The Straits Estate. Expect a line-up of alluring dishes at The Straits Estate prepared by a team of chefs led by Executive Sous Chef, Unaver Unabia inspired by both regions’ rich melting pot of cultures. Chef Unaver, who hails from Sabah, showcases his extensive knowledge of Arabian specialties with a home-grown passion for traditional Malaysian foods in the ‘Straits & Arabian Bazaar’ spread this year. “Malaysian taste buds are welladjusted to variety, so we wanted to explore beyond local palates to
enhance the overall culinary experience at our all-day dining restaurant,” said Chef Unaver. “Since the practice of fasting and breaking fast is a heritage common to Muslim communities across the world, we looked for a way to blend the ethnic elements of foods in the Middle East without compromising on the unique essence of Malaysia”. Chef Unaver’s food philosophy results in a specially curated Bazaar menu that balances the wholesome character of popular Arabian delights with the particular relish that Malaysians find in their local specialties. Guests can look forward to sharing the ceremonial break fast with loved ones starting off with hearty appetizers such as Hummus, Babaganoush, Moutabel, Fattoush Salad, Kerabu Pucuk Paku Dengan Udang Kering, Serunding Ayam dan Daging to name a few. For the main course, tuck into the action-packed aromas of the tender
Lamb Shank Tagine, Lamb Ouzi, Kebab and Shish Taouk, classic street side flavour of Chicken Shawarma and wholesome tomato-based of Harira Soup. Diners will also enjoy resplendent Malay dishes featuring succulent Kambing Golek and Ayam Golek marinated in traditional Kelantanese recipes, Malacca-style Kawah Kari Kepala Ikan and Ayam Percik Terengganu carved to perfection. Be ready to get spoilt with a wide selection of grilled seafood such as Whole Baked Ikan Tenggiri Bakar, Ikan Pari, Ikan Tongkol, Ikan Cincaru and so much more. The new Flora Gardenia limited edition scent is tinted a radiant modern pop pink. The eclectic shade of pink is also beautifully executed in a new outer carton, where it meets the flora and fauna of the botanical Flora print. Flora Gardenia, the scent from the Flora fragrance collection, is an elegy to the delicate gardenia flower. The original eau de toilette’s composition celebrates the lightness of the gardenia shrub’s first blossom and its addictive richness when it is in full flower.
