Malacca, Malaysia The Portuguese Settlement in Malacca is home to a small community of mixed race Malaysians who can trace their ancestry back 500 years to when Malacca was a Portuguese colony. Portuguese, Indian, Malay, Sumatran and Chinese blood flows through the veins of the population here and they have tried hard to retain their unique culture over the centuries, including their creole language Kristang and their Catholic faith. Christmas in Malacca is a one-of-a-kind
celebration where every year, crowds of people will flock to the Portuguese Settlement to enjoy the breathtaking view of houses with Christmas decorations and roads with colourful lights. The Settlement invariably turns into a large fairyland at night. The most important element of the decor is the nativity crib which depicts the birth of the baby Jesus, with miniature figurines made of plastic, wood, clay or ceramic. This is also the time the settlement’s senior women folk prepare traditional Portuguese cakes, delicacies and curry
dishes. Among the cakes is ‘bolukuku’ a savoury delicacy made from coconut scrapings and sea weed. Also on the menu for reunion lunch or dinner is the famous ‘curry devil’ and the lesser known but equally delicious ‘feng’, a spicy combination of finely sliced pork, pig’s tongue and intestines. Another must have is ‘semur’ made with beef and spices during Christmas celebration.

Royal Palace Riverfront Phnom Penh
18 | M ALIND OM AG | DECEM B ER 2 017
The capital of Cambodia is a captivating city full of vitality, crisscrossed by broad boulevards dotted with old French colonial villas, situated in a virtually flat area at the confluence of the Tonlé Sap, Bassac and Mekong rivers. This compact city has maintained its traditional charm being far from the towering high-rise developments that blight neighbouring Southeast Asian capitals, although the construction of newer, higher, and more modern buildings is certainly gaining pace. Phnom Penh is shaping up to be a bustling cosmopolitan city, filled with an abundance of eateries that serve cuisines from around the world and shopping opportunities that would satisfy any guest. Home to international brands, hosting a plethora of imported products, souvenirs and locally made crafts, the city has become a magnet for Cambodians from provinces looking for jobs and trade opportunities. For tourists and locals alike, the lively riverfront – a wide promenade that runs beside
the Tonlé Sap for nearly 2km – is the city’s focal point. In the evenings, residents come here to unwind, snack on hawker food and enjoy the impromptu waterside entertainment. The strip also gives a more sophisticated character and feel to the city, lined with Western restaurants, cafés and bars. Most of the city’s sights are found between the Tonlé Sap River and Monivong Boulevard, located in an area bordered by Sihanouk Boulevard in the south and Wat Phnom in the north. Three key tourist sights lie close by. Arguably the most impressive of the city’s attractions is the elegant complex housing the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda that dominate the southern riverfront. The palace’s distinctive and much-photographed fourfaced spire tower sits above the pitched golden roofs of its Throne Hall, the most impressive building in the royal compound. Traditionally used by the Royal family for coronations and ceremonies, it is nowadays serving visiting dignitaries.
VOYAGE | PHN OM PENH , CA M B O DI A
The adjacent Silver Pagoda named after its 5,329 silver floor tiles, each weighing more than 1kg, is also known as the Pagoda of the Emerald Buddha, or as Wat Preah Keo Morokot, after the green Baccarat crystal Buddha located within. It is home to a stunning collection of artefacts and Buddha images and statues, making the pagoda a museum more than a place of worship. A block north of the palace is an impressive dark-red sandstone building, the National Museum. This dramatic, hybrid building, set in a beautiful leafy courtyard, houses a fabulous collection of ancient Khmer sculptures and artefacts dating back to as early as the sixth century. Also near the river are Wat Ounalom, one of five pagodas founded during Phnom Penh’s first spell as the capital, whose austere grey stupa houses the ashes of many prominent Khmers. Close by is the bustling hilltop Wat Phnom, one of the city’s prime pleasure spots, whose foundation is said to predate that of the city, giving its name. The old French administrative area, often referred to as the French quarter, surrounds the hill on which Wat Phnom sits, boasting
many fine colonial buildings, some of which have been restored, including the National Library, Raffles Hotel Le Royal, the main post office and a grand train station. To the southwest, the daffodil-yellow Art Deco Central Market, close to the city’s business district, offers an atmospheric experience. Laid out with stalls selling jewellery, low-grade electronics, clothing and souvenirs, it is a place where meat, fish, fruits and vegetables are on display, with cheap feed and local dishes selling for a few thousand riel (1,000 Riel = 0.25 USD). To the south of the city, the jam-packed Russian Market is also a popular souvenirsourcing spot while another much-visited sight, though for completely different reasons, is the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum: a one-time school that became a centre for the torture of men, women and children who fell afoul of the Pol Pot regime. Many visitors first spend a couple of days in Phnom Penh before visiting other parts of Cambodia like Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, Sihanoukville and the southern beaches, or heading to the Vietnamese border crossings at Bavet and Chau Doc. Several rewarding day-trips from the capital out into the surrounding countryside can also be made.

VOYAGE | DIV IN G IN M ALAYSI A
g n a i i s y v a l i a M D In Malaysia is a diving haven just waiting to be explored. Among the renowned diving destinations are Pulau Tioman, Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Layang Layang and Pulau Sipadan.
Pahang
Pulau Tioman is said to be a real treasure as it has colourful coral reefs and marine life such as anemones, starfish, limpets and thorny sea urchins. There are more than 20 diving spots around the island; among the best are Pulau Tulai and Pulau Renggis. Here, in vast gardens of hard corals, cuttlefish, angelfish, barracuda and turtles await divers. Deep diving enthusiasts will love Pulau Chebeh, the site of several giant manta sightings. Tioman is easily accessible by boat from Tanjung Gemuk jetty in Rompin, Pahang, or through Mersing, Johor. 24 | M ALIND OM AG | DECEM B ER 2 017
There are many diving operators on the island with reasonable diving packages.
Terengganu
Pulau Redang, 45km off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, also offers excellent spots for diving thanks to the sheltered waters of the Redang Island Marine Park. Rockcod, nudibranch, batfish and Yellow-tail barracudas are among the marine life that abounds in Pulau Redang. Among the popular dive sites here are Tanjung Tokong where Green and Hawksbill turtles have been spotted and Tunnel Point. Tanjung Lang is the shallowest, offering fans, whips and other corals in waters with a maximum depth of 18 metres. Log on to www.redang.org to get updates on the diving sites and to know about the packages offered.
Pulau Perhentian is 25km away from Kuala Besut, Terengganu. Ferry services to the island are available while car parking facilities are provided at RM5 per night. The Perhentian islands are made up of Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil. The former is popular among families while the latter is enjoyed by the younger generation and backpacker crowd. The island is rich in coral and marine life which includes stingrays, black corals, moray eels and colourful fishes. Turtles come up to lay eggs between April and September.
Sabah
Pulau Layang-Layang, Sabah, is another diving destination not to be missed where its coral walls plunge a staggering 2,000 metres down to the floor of the South China Sea. The waters are crystal clear with excellent visibility.
VOYAGE | DIV IN G IN M ALAYSI A
Massive numbers of barracuda, jacks and hammerhead sharks frequent the waters here. The island is also a sanctuary to thousands of migratory raptors. LayangLayang has a 1,067-metre airstrip and a comfortable 90-room 3-star resort. Other facilities include a 200-seat restaurant, full service PADI diving centre and a free form water pool as well as a souvenir shop. Layang-Layang Island can be enjoyed as part of an exclusive tour run by Layang-Layang Island Resort. Access to the resort is between February and October. Another island that is legendary among diving circles is Pulau Sipadan, Sabah. It conjures images of hammerhead sharks, millions of reef fish and dozens of sea
turtles swimming peacefully in its waters. It is Malaysia’s only oceanic island and is only 12 hectares in size. A 25-minute walk is all that is required to circle the island on foot. Malaysian television presenter and actress Daphne Iking has always had a knack for storytelling and writing. Those skills actually paved way for her to make a career in the television industry. The Sabah born lass is currently emceeing and just finished filming the first season of TV reality show “Say Yes To The Dress Asia” which will be aired on TLC channel. The show features 18 brides on a mission to find The Wedding Dress. Daphne, who has a Masters in Communications from Universiti Sains Malaysia, started her television career by hosting a financial programme called Ringgit Sense in 2003. Soon after the industry noted her talent and she started getting offers for reality adventure show Explorace and subsequently hosted ntv7’s The Breakfast Show. Christmas is a special time for the television presenter, as her folks and family are Catholics although she is married to Azmi Abdul Rahman and celebrate both Hari Raya and Christmas. “We gather at my older sister, Michelle-Ann place after our father passed away. My mom and brother flies in from Sabah to Kuala Lumpur. There is of course the gift exchange and merry-making but I think it is the dishes that are a little bit different to the western Christmas cuisine. Mum’s Lamb ‘Pinasakan’ (a Kadazandusun method of cooking) is the highlight dish. Followed by the other traditional delicacies like hinava, tuhau, bosou and my brother’s killer chilli. Daphne and family flies in Malindo Air as they always have a good experience and the cabin crews are also warm and pleasant to her family. “I love the ample leg room in Malindo Air even at economy class. The price is also reasonable with 30kg checked in luggage allowance and it comes with onboard entertainment,” added Daphne. 34 | M ALIND OM AG | DECEM B ER 2 017

Professional golfer and course designer John Morrow explained, “I was a little concern people will not like it because it is difficult, if you do not hit the ball straight you are going to lose a lot of golf balls. And I think the thing that makes it fun is that, visually there is always something fantastic to look at.”
