Thaipusam is the biggest festival for Hindus after Deepavali. It is grandly celebrated in Batu Caves. It is observed as a day of thanksgiving and paying penance for Lord Murugan. Devotees prepare themselves for the occasion by cleansing their bodies through fasting and abstinence, and usually observe a vegetarian diet for a certain period of time. Many devotees began paying penance a few days before the actual festival, with the carrying of the kavadi (a decorated structure bearing the image of several deities including Lord Murugan) on their shoulders and milk pots carried above their heads. Asian Destinations To Visit In 2018

Songkran, Thailand

The travel industry has gone leaps and bounds to accommodate the latest trend and experiences that travelers are seeking today. In fact, tourism has become such a profitable industry in every country that respective local governments are seen to invest generously in initiatives to attract tourists to their country. As the New Year dawns, there are destinations to think about, weather patterns to consider and times or season of year to ponder. However, one thing is certain and that is, Asia is one of the most amazing regions in the world to explore. SRI LANKA Known for producing some of the best tea in the world, Sri Lanka is more than just the land of plantations. With more than 2,000 years of cultural history, this country makes up for what it lacks in size. Beyond the culture, Sri Lanka is known for its natural landscapes – from beaches and mountain ranges to tea estates and stunning coastal regions. Sri Lanka’s white beaches are something to behold, with shimmering blue waters that holds your breath. But if it is Sri Lanka’s famous wild elephant herds that you would like 10 | M ALIND OM AG | JANUARY 2 018

to see, then Udawalawe National Park has more than 200 elephants that call the place home. CAMBODIA

Cambodia has come a long way and now shines as an authentic and fascinating destination in Southeast Asia. The remote floating villages on Tonle Sap and more than 21 ethnic minorities groups like the Indigenous Khmer people provide true insight into the daily life of this growing country. Cambodia is also not without its white sandy beaches, as Sihanoukville, known locally as Snooky, is home to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Visit Otres Beach for 4km of white sands and beach bars while Victory Beach is home to budget accommodation options and close to the local port. Chaotic yet charismatic capital Phnom Penh is a revitalised city earning credits for its sumptuous riverside setting, cultural renaissance, and world-class dining scenes. Meanwhile Siem Reap, with cosmopolitan cafes and a diverse nightlife, is as much a destination as the nearby iconic temples. And up-andcoming Battambang, reminiscent of Siem Reap before the advent of mass tourism, charms with graceful French architecture and a thriving contemporary art scene. The capital city is definitely worth the visit. This fast-moving capital is where

he desire to enjoy the beauty of underwater diving in Indonesia, is what Tri Suswati - the wife of Kapolri Muhammad Tito Karnavian (Chief of Police, Indonesia) and Tintin wanted to indulge. The beauty of Indonesia’s stunning waters is a beautiful sight to behold and was a truly memorable experience for them. The underwater beauty of Indonesia is the ultimate destination for divers from all over the world. Indonesia as a country in the tropics, offers underwater natural charm that has been recognised as one of the best dive sites in the world. This is also what made people wanting to explore the various dive spots scattered in the territorial waters of Indonesia. The natural charm of this archipelago needs to be preserved. That is why, Tri Suswati keeps trying to invite all members of Bhayangkari (Organisation of Police Officer’s wives in Indonesia) to appreciate the beauty under the sea. She also promotes it in social media sites to spread the beauty of underwater tourism in the archipelago. Tri Suswati and Tintin explored the

beauty of the waters in the area of Komodo National Park, East Nusa Tenggara. Best time to enjoy the underwater marine charm is between May and September. They arrived at Labuan Bajo, before making the final preparation to the dive site. The trip to Labuan Bajo is easier because Batik Air operates direct flights from Soekarno Hatta Airport, Cengkareng to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo. Soon after, the journey begins at the dive spots of Komodo National Park. They board the pinisi ship (sailing ship) whereby the package is to stay a few days on the ship. The ship will take the guest easily to all the favourite dive point. While on board the ship, one will witness the beautiful scenery that will leave anyone mesmerised. Imagine looking at a cluster of exotic islands poking around the blue sea. There are many dive spots scattered in this area, and they decided Batu Bolong will be the first diving point to explore the beauty of the waters in Komodo National Park. This point has an area that is a bit narrow, because on the right and left of this dive site is a downstream that should be avoided by the divers. Although it is narrow, the marine life here is very diverse. Here they can see the various varieties and colours of corals, black tip shark, white tip shark, JANUARY 2 018 | M ALIND OM AG | 19

napoleon fish, turtles and much more. After enjoying the beauty of the underwater at Batu Bolong dive point, we returned to pinisi ship to continue to the next dive spot. They continued the dives at Taka Makassar point. Here one must be very careful because the current is quite strong. This is also the spot where we managed to see a beautiful manta ray. And if the diver is lucky, one can also see a stingray.

“Besides diving, we

Another point that must be visited is the Crystal Rock. At this point we were amazed to see shark reef. And the point of this one dive is to see the habitat of reef sharks after navigating into the waters of Komodo National Park. This is actually quite a unique scene. In addition to these two points earlier, several other dive points in the waters of this Komodo National Park are Castle Rock, Shoot Gun and many more that we can

choose to dive. And, at each location we saw different coral reefs and marine life. But keep in mind that the territorial waters of Komodo National Park is not recommended for beginners. This is more for advance divers who has done the dive at least 50 times. Underwater habitat of Komodo National Park is arguably unique, because they do not seem disturbed by the presence of divers. The local government are

aware of the beauty here and takes extra precaution in preserving the underwater marine life. In fact, the local community began to participate in guarding this national park area from the hands of people who are irresponsible. Tri Suswati always encourage other divers to improve their knowledge in order to preserve the environment. Therefore, in the series of dives, Tri Suswati always emphasises the importance of divers to continue improving their knowledge and in preserving the environment. She also advocates on not catching and consuming protected marine life. Besides diving, one can also enjoy the exotic landscapes with trekking in several locations or just enjoy the beautiful beach. One of the famous beach that is worth visiting is the Pink Beach. Besides trekking in Komodo Island, one should take the time to see the Komodo dragon in its natural habitat but must be accompanied by a local ranger.

njung Malaysia, an area which reflects the unique Malaysian culture and flavour through the display of local architecture, products and cuisines is the latest attraction at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Located at the fifth floor at KLIA’s departure hall, formerly known as Anjung Tinjau, visitors and travellers will get the chance to sample local delicacies such as nasi lemak, fruit salad (rojak), laksa, Ipoh noodles and traditional kueh besides trying on traditional games such as congkak, batu seremban and draughts. The Anjung Malaysia also showcases batik drawings beside pictorial display of Malaysia in the 50s and 60s. In its pursuit to remove the perception that all airports are alike, Malaysia Airports strives to deliver lasting impressions by fostering a unique experiential ambience that other airports cannot simulate. It also hopes to evoke a sense of homecoming as well as nationalistic pride in the locals. Airports that highlight the unique culture and geographical attributes associated with their locations are usually appreciated and enjoyed better by airport

Anjung Malaysia also serves a dual purpose in highlighting what Malaysia has to offer whereby local SMEs and entrepreneurs have been provided with a venue to showcase their products to an international audience. Silicon Valley of India

By: Archana Singh

There is a lot to explore in a city that gradually evolved from being the Garden City to the Silicon Valley of India. The rise of start-up culture in Bengaluru reflects a blend of old and new - some parts with historical monuments that will take you back to memory lane, while others with the high-rise corporate complexes will make you feel you are in a global city.

it is housed in the erstwhile mansion of Mysore royal family and was opened to the public in 2009. Besides the paintings, sculptures, graphic prints; there is also the examples of early photography in India which showcased the historical development of modern art in India.

The cosmopolitan Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) is one of India’s most progressive and developed cities, blessed with a round-the-year pleasant climate and an ever-mushrooming gastronomical and shopping scene. What the city lacks in world-famous sights, makes up with lovely parks and striking Victorian-era architecture. There is always something going on at the fastpaced young city to keep you busy.

The heart of the Garden city resides in Lalbagh Botanical Garden, which is world-renowned for botanical artwork, scientific study of plants and conservation of plants. Walking through the 240 acres of the Garden, you will find, it has 1,854 species of plants. It was commissioned by Hyder Ali in 1760 and completed by his son Tipu Sultan. The garden features rare plants from around the world. One thing that you cannot miss in the garden is the over 3000 million years old Lal Bagh Rock. Besides the largest collection of rare plants, it also consists a glass house where an annual flower show is held every year and is also a home to an aquarium and a lake.

Top 5 Places to See in Bengaluru: Bangalore Palace Being ta Culturephile, this place was high on the list as it is an epitome of great architecture and beauty. Built in the year of 1878, Bangalore Palace exudes the spice of old regal opulence of one of the most powerful dynasties of Southern India. Spread in a humungous 45,000 square feet area, it is a great piece of art reflecting the mix of Tudor and Scottish Gothic Architecture. As per Legend, King Chamarajendra Wadiyar drew his inspiration from the Windsor Castle of London.

National Gallery of Modern Art Another landmark site with its art collection was the National Gallery of Modern Art. Spanning across 3.5 acres, 24 | M ALIND OM AG | JANUARY 2 018

Bannerghatta National Park, Bangalore Overview Located 22 km away from the humdrum of Bengaluru, the Bannerghatta National

Park is a haven for nature and wildlife lovers. Spread over a massive area of around 104.27 sq km, this national park is most famous for the country’s first butterfly park. The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop airliner, which means that it’s powered by quiet and efficient propellers rather than turbojets. This makes it ideal for shorter flights where speeds below 725 km/h are required.

The number “72” in its name is derived from the aircraft’s standard seating configuration in a passenger-carrying configuration, which could seat 72-78 passengers in a single-class arrangement.

Exploring Taman Negara

T

aman Negara is the crown jewel of tropical rainforests in Asia. Reputed as the oldest of its kind in the world (130 million years old), it has evolved amid natural disasters and been generally reserved despite human civilisation — creating an epicentre for the most diverse distribution of flora and fauna on the planet. There is 150 mammal species ranging from tiny rodents to magnificent Indian elephants, 479 species of birds and a host of native animals unique to Malaysia. Established in 1939 under British rule, Taman Negara is a whopping 4343 square kilometres spanning three states. The expanse is covered in a criss-cross of meandering rivers, rapids and waterfalls; a mountain range and lush valleys with 30 to 40 metre canopies that obscure the sunlight. As the forest reserve is so big — it would literally take years or even decades to fully explore with scientists discovering new species all the time — we have condensed the itinerary to focus on the must-see sights and must-do activities for first time visitors. Jungle Trekking You cannot go to Taman Negara and not trek into the depths of the jungle. During the day you can see rare jungle flowers and take amazing photos at the base of 40m tall trees with gargantuan banyan buttressed roots. Also keep your eyes peeled for sightings of the gorgeous pitcher plant species. There are various trails to choose from, all for different levels of ability. For the more adventurous, check out the 53km long distance trail from Kuala Tahan to Gunung Tahan. It takes seven days and six nights and is one of the most challenging trails and seldom explored in the park. Night Jungle Walk The fun begins when the sun sets. Most fauna here are generally crepuscular (active between dusk and dawn) or nocturnal so the best time to catch a glimpse of native wild animals is after dark. Some trails run along rivers that are known to be feeding grounds for seladang (Malaysian gaurs),

deers, monkeys and wild boars. If you are really lucky, you may spot a well-camouflaged black panther stalking in the trees or a herd of elephants dipping their trunks into the stream. If you fail to spot any wildlife, head to the salt licks and the animal observatories at Tahan Hide or Kumbang Hide, where there is ample deers, wild boars and Malayan tapir to see. Canopy Walkway Taman Negara’s canopy walkway is arguably one of the longest in the world at 530m and is 40m above the ground. The dense canopy is home to a myriad of bird species and arboreal animals that have formed complex ecosystems at such altitude. It is also common to see certain trees towering above the walkway and these giants are estimated to by thousands of years old. Interestingly, the walkway was initially built for research purposes, but is now the most common attraction at the park and can be reached by boat or trekking, just 1.2km from Park headquarters.  Orang Asli Villages Although Taman Negara is relatively pristine and untouched, the tribal people have coexisted here for thousands of years. The Batek and Semokberi aborigines have beautiful rustic settlements where they use blowpipes and spears to hunt game. They are very

approachable and friendly people but are extremely superstitious as well so visitors are advised to respect their traditions and cultures. If you want to take a photo of them, make sure you ask for permission first. If you are an adrenaline junkie, jump on a wooden boat that will rip through the seven river rapids of Sungai Tembeling. The rapids are highly rated and you will definitely be drenched by the end of the journey. Alternatively, you can cruise upstream to Late Berkoh, one of the most photographed areas of Taman Negara. There is also finishing adventures for the serious angler, with popular spots including

Kuala Perkai, Rincing, Rawa and Lata Said. The best fishing months are during drier months in February to September of the year. Gunung Tahan Gunung Tahan is the tallest peak in Peninsula Malaysia at 2,187m and takes four days to reach the top with camping needed each night. Depending on your fitness levels, you can traverse the old trail which usually take six to seven days of trekking through valleys and hilly areas and rivers and is 32km longer. You will need to register and pay a small fee for access and be sure to have water proof flash lights with back up batteries as well as a custom built first aid kit.

PAS SIO N

Hafiz Zainal NATURE’s ARTISAN

W

hat started as an interest in plants and environment since small turned into a passion for Hafiz Zainal who is now a Landscape Architect. He currently works for the local municipal council as Assistant Director of Landscape. His interest for trees and plants has evolved to designing parks, garden and decorating the city. It does not just stop there as he also makes terrarium during his free time. A terrarium is a miniature landscape with living plants, moss, rocks and other features within a contained environment such as a jar. Those with closed lids are able to survive without human interference for a long period of time. The plants are able to recycle the air and water that is contained within the jar and therefore it creates its own little ecosystem. Terrariums are more than just a jumble of lovely plants. There should be a harmonious narrative between the plants, the container and the figures. Plant selection is also important, choosing plants that have similar living conditions, but contrasting colour and shape. It is important not to over-crowd a terrarium, this may look nice at first but it won’t be long before

all the plants begin to out-grow their small space. “I used to experiment growing plants in strange vessels for fun and after my studies, I started experimenting with developing the optimal conditions for plants in an indoor environment and how to sustain it,” said Hafiz during an interview. “I love plants because it is quite unique and brings out the creative side in me. Plants has healing purposes according to research. Plants generally makes you happy as it gives out oxygen and gives you a sense of tranquility while looking at it,” added the landscape architect. He found that these classical terrariums lacked something: terrariums are like miniature worlds, so he played around with different figurines until he found the perfect ones to tell his stories. At first he just made them for friends, but soon people became interested in buying them and from there it naturally blossomed into his business. If you are interested in the terrariums that are creatively and meticulously crafted by Hafiz, he can be contacted via email at hafiz_zainal17@ yahoo.com, or you can DM him on instagram as he goes with the ID @hafizzainall.
