CEO ’ S N OTE

Happy 5th Birthday OD! March has always been a special month as it marks the anniversary for Malindo Air. Going back five years, I remember how we started with only two aircraft and today we have a fleet of 45 aircraft serving various countries across the Asian and Australian continents. The journey has been an exciting yet challenging one with rapid expansion, making a significant mark in the regional aviation industry. I believe duly to that, we have been recognised and won a few awards since our inception. Our constant pursuit to fulfill our customer’s experience and need have gotten us the CAPA’s 2016 Asia Pacific Regional Airline of the Year. Besides that, we also took home Newcomer of the Year Australia 2016/17 by Expedia, Top Performing Airline 2015 by Travelport and Airline of the Year (Passenger) at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Awards in 2014. We have come this far because of our diligent workforce who have steered the

company to greater heights. For that, I must genuinely express my gratitude for all the hard work invested by my colleagues, and most importantly for adhering to the company regulations especially in terms of comfort and safety of our passengers, which is our utmost priority. Not to forget, the continuous support of our local and international industry partners, particularly the Ministries of Transport, Government agencies namely the Department of Civil Aviation and Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM), tourism bodies, airport authorities and finally not forgetting our loyal customers for entrusting us while we continuously try to create the most memorable journey for you. Since the school holidays are around the corner, our cover story highlights some of the unconventional yet eyecatching destinations to head to within our network. This time around our focus is on educational travels and activities that is bound to create knowledge and

experiences beyond boundaries for your whole family. Meanwhile our Voyage sections takes us to Yangon in Myanmar. The beautiful country offers a rich slice of history and culture, which are two main elements that sets this city apart from any other. Whereas the other takes you an exquisite dessert trail across Malaysia that should be churning your sweet cravings soon after the read. This month also celebrates International Women’s Day whereby female figures around the globe are honoured for their perseverance, achievement and contribution to the world. For that, I take this opportunity to acknowledge them and particularly express my heartfelt respect to the women work force of Malindo Air who plays a dual role of a career woman and a home maker when she is off duty. Till next month, have a pleasant journey with us and happy reading.

Signs Buckingham Palace Declaration Against Wildlife Trafficking Malindo Air has signed the Buckingham Palace Declaration in support of efforts to prevent trafficking and transportation of illegal wildlife and their products. The Buckingham Palace Declaration is an initiative of United for Wildlife, a movement created by The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to protect iconic species such as elephant, rhinoceros and tiger, as well as lesser known species such as pangolin,

from extinction. The international illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be worth USD19 billion per year, making it the fourth largest illegal global trade (after drugs, counterfeiting and human trafficking). For many endangered species, this trade poses a significant threat, with the latest data from conservation organisations revealing the critical status of many iconic species In March 2016, IATA was among the signatories to the UFW Transport Taskforce

Buckingham Palace Declaration which aims at reducing the illegal trade of wildlife. A total of 39 airlines have also signed up to this

Fire Safety Awareness Programme Malindo Air’s Safety Promotion unit from SSQ Department (Safety, Security and Quality) organised Fire Safety Awareness Program (FSAP) with Airport Fire Rescue Service for Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Subang Airport Malindo Air staff to assist them to learn and understand better about fire safety. The programme covered theory of fire and practical usage of fire extinguishers. This is an ongoing Fire Awareness Programme that SSQ are planning to do frequently to cultivate safety awareness among Malindo employees. The programme also hopes to cultivate safety as general practice not only at work but to be practiced at their homes. This way we can ensure to prevent occurrence of accidental incidents that may lead to unpleasant circumstances. Prevention is certainly better than cure, and this programme is tailored thoroughly and specifically for that purpose.

Wings Air

Open International Route from Pontianak Wings Air, a sister company of Malindo Air, also under Lion Air Group opened their International route in late January 2018. The International route is from Pontianak via Supadio Kubu Raya Airport to Kuching, Sarawak via Kuching International Airport. This route is the first new destination for Wings Air in 2018 and will start operating on January 24, 2018. The flight will be served twice daily with departure time from Pontianak at 9.45am on flight number IW 1378 and at 6:00pm on flight number IW 1372. Flight schedule from Kuching will depart on the morning at 7:00am using flight number IW 1379 and at 11:55am with flight number IW 1373. Ramaditya Handoko, Corporate Communication of Lion Air Group said Wings Air will serve the flight using ATR 72-500 or ATR 72-600 aircraft that can provide 72 economic class seats. Rama also added that the demand for both destinations is high enough, so the airline is ready to provide twice daily flight schedule by not closing the possibility of adding additional frequencies in the future in order to continue accommodating loyal customer’s need. The presence of Wings Air on this route will give more choices to the public of Pontianak and surrounding areas as well as Kuching to visit each other for the needs of tourism, family visits, meetings, incentives, conventions and events. This new route could also stimulate economic growth of Pontianak. In future, Wings Air is also planning to expand its international network from Pontianak to other destinations in Malaysia, such as Miri, and other domestic routes close by. This is supported by the addition of a new fleet of Wings Air in 2018 that is gradually planned to come with five unit of ATR 72-

600 aircraft to add on strength for Wings Air operations. Currently Wings Air is flying to more than 105 domestic

destinations in Indonesia with flight frequency reaching 351 flights per day flown by 54 fleets with ATR 72-500 and 600.

Interesting Family Vacations to Explore As the school holidays are just around the corner, a well-deserved family break will be very much anticipated. With tons of activities and countries to choose from, parents are leaning towards providing educational trips. In fact these trips are increasingly becoming popular as parents desire to combine vacations with learning activities to enhance their children’s knowledge, positive exposure and travel experience. Besides getting a whole family fun getaway in a new ambience, everyone, (including the elders) gets to learn something hence making it a meaningful trip for all. You do not need to travel to famous locales. In reality, any destination offers opportunities for learning. Broadly speaking, educational vacations come in several styles: informal learning where families learn as they go by visiting museums or historic sites; resorts that offer enrichment programmes and the chance to try something new; national park visits that offer the chance to learn about wildlife; escorted tours focused on family adventures and many more. Resorts all over the world now offer various ways to learn new skills, try a new activity, or take workshops for every interest. If someone in your family has a particular interest, be it

cooking or astronomy or learning a new culture, do some research to find resorts that may offer what you are looking for. The possibilities are endless. A visit to a city can be an eyeopening experience for families and a chance to get a big dose of art and culture in a short period of time. If your kids are young, look for children’s museums geared especially for kids under 12. Science museums with interactive exhibits can be great bets for preschool and primary-school aged kids. When visiting art museums, plan on spending a maximum of two or three hours and choose artists with kid appeal. Beyond offering the sheer adventure of trying a new experience, a learning vacation can have a lifelong impact. A child may discover a new strength or hobby and a family may find a new activity to do together. And learning adventures lead to great family stories. Asia is rich in culture and history with the most breathtaking views waiting to be explored. With so much to do, try, learn and discover, any Asian destination is rewarding. To help narrow down the options, here is a list of some interesting vacation spots for families to go to on your next break

Yearning for Yangon By: Sara Nabila Harris

W

ith its bright colours, sights and sounds, Southeast Asia is renowned for its bustling city centres. Myanmar’s former capital, Yangon illustrates this regional diversity with its unique blend of cultures, preservation of beautiful old buildings and fantastic fusion foods. The largest and most populated city in the nation, Yangon is a vital business centre and the country’s most culturally diverse city. Though most of the metropolitan area’s population is of indigenous Bamar descent, large communities of Indian, Chinese, and Rakhine people, as well as the nation’s fascinating British colonial past have all influenced Yangon’s culture, architecture and cuisine. Under British rule from 1824 to 1948, Yangon has preserved many of its colonial era buildings. Buddhism is at the heart of Myanmar’s culture, as you walk the streets of Yangon, you will notice many beautiful pagodas. Known for its great choice of restaurants, the city offers some of Myanmar’s most exciting dining experiences, featuring a mix of Burmese, Mon, Indian and Chinese influences with fresh local ingredients and a harmonious balance of sour, salty, spicy and bitter flavours.

Ais Kacang, literally meaning “ice beans”, also commonly known as Ais Batu Campur, ABC (meaning “mixed ice”), incorporates a variety of ingredients over shaved ice and drenched in copious amounts of evaporated milk and a traditional sweetener called Gula Melaka or coconut sugar. Traditionally the dish is served with roasted peanuts, other local delicacies, buttered or creamed corn and grass jelly (cincau). However, some local vendors have upped the ante by throwing in nata de coco cubes, beans, fresh fruit bites, pickled mango slices and even a dollop of ice cream. ABC is God sent to those who cannot bear the heat in Malaysia. If you fancy this mouth-watering dish, check out Uncle Weng Kee’s 55-yearold beverage stall in Petaling Jaya oldtown for one of the best servings in Malaysia. Malaysia is truly a sweet tooth’s paradise. We have some of the most sinfully sweet and colourful desserts. Kuih Lapis is probably one of the most iconic desserts in Malaysia as it is impossible to dislike. This rice flour pudding comes in so many tantalising colours, shapes and sizes. The pudding comprises of stacks of sweet multi-coloured layers that have a gooey texture that melts in the mouth. This dessert is so popular that almost any vendor

Apam Balik is a folded pancake with creamed corn and chopped peanuts. In between is anything thin and crunchy or thick and fluffy. These snacks are the perfect dessert if you need something filling and tasty. Imagine a crisper version of a crumpet with a crunchy interior.

ABC

Leng Chee Kang will melt away your worries. This traditional dish is served with longan fruits, lotus seeds, dried persimmons, malva nuts and sometimes quail eggs submerged in a beautiful boiled rock sugar broth. The dish can be served hot or chilled with ice cubes and is refreshing on a scorching hot day.

Ang Ku Kueh

will give you high quality servings across Malaysia. Pisang Goreng is a traditional banana fritter that is to die for. Best served piping hot, the fried banana dessert is deceptively unappealing in appearance but is bursting with flavour. Made from fresh bananas coated in flour batter, it is fried for a couple of minutes and ready to serve. The sweet and savoury taste with a crunchy exterior and soft mushy interior can bring on unstoppable cases of the munchies. You simply cannot stop at just one, so be sure to order a couple on the go. Pisang Goreng is really popular

mix of shaved ice, palm sugar, Gula Melaka, coconut milk and kidney beans that is sweet and blends mushy and crunchy textures in a heavenly balance. This sweet dessert is a close cousin of ABC and can sometimes be found at vendors who sell desserts under the Ais Kacang (shaved ice) family. The best Cendol (highly contested among all vendors) is probably at Penang Road Teochew Chendul, which has been in operation since 1936.

all over Malaysia and can be found mostly in any of the evening stalls or night bazaars in any local township. Ondeh Ondeh is a quintessential local Malay delight. Made from either glutinous rice flour or sweet potatoes, the balls are coated with coconut kernel (santan) and hide a sugary brown Gula Melaka surprise right in the middle. Take a bite into one of these and expect the delightful juices inside to squirt out. The hearts of Malaysians are not easy to win over when it comes to food. But mention Cendol and everyone will melt instantaneously. Cendol is made out of a frenzied

Bubur Cha Cha is like Cha Cha Mambo in your mouth ‌ explosive! It is a Malaccan Nyonya sago porridge served with sweet potato chunks and coconut milk. The clever mix of local ingredients transports you to the simple lifestyles of the local Nyonya people in their traditional kampung abodes. Last, but not least on our list is Ang Ku Kueh. It is the gooiest of gooey desserts that melts in your mouth to reveal a beautifully compacted sweet mung bean and peanut. The glutinous rice flour casing usually comes with intricate traditional Chinese designs that are amazingly detailed.

Boeing 737 was one of the main reasons why the Boeing Corporation built the largest factory in the world (Guinness record as the largest building in the world with a volume of 472 million cubic feet).

A commercial aircraft flies at an average speed of 800 kilometres per hour.

3

Newest versions of 737-800 have installed carbon brakes manufactured by Bugatti. The carbon brakes are more efficient and lighter than steel brakes. The total mass difference is about 700lb which leads to savings in fuel for about 0.5 percent.

Aviation provides the only worldwide rapid transportation system which makes it essential for global business and tourism.

Modern aircraft achieve fuel efficiencies of 3.5 liters per 100 passenger kilometers or 67 passenger miles per gallon.

he Alee’s is a bridal house founded by three siblings, Muhdia Rafika and twins Mutia Nadra Alimuddin (Lala Nadra) and Mutia Nadira Alimuddin (Nadira). All three have the same interests, the bridal world. While Lala Nadra and Nadira explore the world of fashion by making The Alee’s brand, Muhdia explores the world of cosmetics. The Alee’s bridal house is located in Makassar City in Indonesia. The believe that beauty lies in one’s personality and appearance is the main inspiration for The Alee’s collection created by Lala Nadra and Nadira. They bring the uniqueness of South Sulawesi into the realm of fashion. Their interest in the fashion world started since childhood. However, they began taking this career path to the next level since college, beginning with a sewing course that gradually enhanced their interest. They pursued the field of fashion after they completed their education at Hasanuddin University, Makassar. The twins then went on to London College of Fashion in England to pursue their ambition. While studying at the London College of Fashion, they met many young designers from different countries, namely Thailand, Greece, Spain, to Colombia. And it was a very 34 | M ALIND OM AG | M AR CH 2 018

memorable experience for Lala Nadra and Nadira. The Alee’s Show was first performed at the inauguration ceremony to become a member of the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers Entrepreneurs (APPMI) in 2016. The Alee’s raised the title “Castle” with Toraja woven fabric in its design. The twin designers are mostly inspired by Olivier Rouseteing (Balmain) and Victoria Beckham designs. They plan to open ready to wear lines for ethnic clothing - especially fabrics from South Sulawesi, to reach markets outside Indonesia. The twins also have a dream to open a fashion school in Makassar in search for young aspired designers in their home region. Meritus Pelangi Jewel of Langkawi Elegantly furnished in soft pastel colours, each guestroom is thoughtfully equipped with modern comforts, while the lighting creates a soft, cosy ambience. All characteristics of an affluent yet rustic architecture, designed on the principle of a leisurely Kampung or Village lifestyle, these chalets come thoughtfully equipped with modern conveniences for your comfort. Legacy of Ernie ELS

ELS Club Teluk Datai and Gunung Raya Golf

The Els Club Teluk Datai is known as one of Malaysia’s most uniquely captivating golf courses. Situated in the northern part of Langkawi, bordering the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea to the East within a large 8,000 acre preserved rainforest, the Els Club overlooks the marbled limestone peaks of Mount Mat Cincang. Designed by Ernie Els, a former World No.1 professional golfer, the par-72 championship layout plays to a short 6,760 yards from the tips and is perfect for both beginners and avid golfers alike. With natural streams flowing throughout the golf course, golfers must be prepared to have their senses and skills challenged at the 18 holes of golf that stretches and snakes through ancient rainforest down to the turquoise Andaman Sea; or attempt the challenging coastal golf that roves alongside a 17km beach facing the South China Sea. Majestic Gunung Raya The Gunung Raya Golf Resort located at the foothills of the magnificent Gunung Raya (Celebration Mountain), covers 300 acres of former rubber plantation land and was designed by renowned American golf architect Max Wexler. The panoramic view of the mountain with its rolling hills creates an impressive landscape. The 18-hole, 72-par golf course features Bermuda grass teeing areas and numerous fairways contoured with sand traps and water hazards and has held many amateur golf tournaments over the years. Gunung Raya promises an exciting game amidst the raw unspoilt beauty of Langkawi. This truly is the island getaway for those who want to experience a traditional Malaysian beach holiday with the classic game of golf amidst natural surroundings enveloped in ageless history. Wanming Lin

was a calling for an English Teacher, Wanming Lin to choose this career path. It all started when she was a freshmen year in Taiwan and she was offered a part-time job as an English tutor. Little did she know, that teaching gave her immense joy and making a difference in a student’s life can be rewarding especially when they pass with flying colours in their examinations. “I found it challenging initially to motivate the student but the method of simplifying some grammar rules and guiding the student to master the language was like an achievement itself,” said Wanming. That was when she started to discover teaching was quite interesting and pursued her passion. She has Masters from Cardiff University in Education. “The best part of being a teacher is that I can see some changes in different students every day. And when I get visited unexpectedly by former students and see what they have achieved in life, telling me what they have learned from me, or when they thanked me, that is the moment I feel the rewarding part of my job. That is also where my passion stems from I do not just teach them English. I share my life with them, hoping they know that I understand their struggle because I have been there. I learn to teach better and teaching makes me learn as well,” added the teacher. She has been working in Lizen High School (located in Taichung City, Taiwan) for about 11 years. During her teaching period, she has been a homeroom teacher for 11 years, four years as a full-time English teacher, and four years as supervisor of Foreign Language Center. Since teaching is her current and only career, she plans to teach until she retires, hoping she can be of help to her current and future students academically and mentally. She also plans to travel abroad more so that she will have more experiences to share with her students. In conjunction with International Women’s Day on March 8, this is a story of a women’s achievement in the academic world in today’s society.
