ravelling to different corners of the world to experience fascinating varieties of food is certainly a quest worth exploring. For foodies who are willing to go out of their comfort zone and tap on their adventurous curiosity, here is an experience to add on to your bucket list. Nothing beats trying a new dish abroad and discovering some delicacies you never knew existed. Imagine ordering a meal of fried insects in Thailand or a fertilized duck egg in Vietnam. It might seem unbelievable that people actually eat those things but it is considered delicacies by the locals in those countries. Trying unconventional food as such certainly requires an iron stomach, a brave heart and an amazing inquisitiveness. While much of the fun of travelling revolves around new experiences, even the most daring explorers may draw the line at trying certain foods. Proving that one man’s winged rat is another man’s pricey appetizer. Though many bizarre foods served around the world inspire

comparisons to the live eel shown in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, certain dishes are not meant to frighten away foreigners. On the contrary, in the world’s weird gastronomy adventure, indigenous and ethnic groups proudly narrate themselves through flavour. If you choose not to indulge, it is believed that you may be missing out on a crucial travel experience. While many of these culinary ambassadors may seem strange to us, they are often delicacies in their homelands. It is not always our fault that we find them impossible to stomach it. Ethnic specialties are often made more palatable as they travel overseas. We may think we know everything about a country’s cuisine, but our domestic versions may not even resemble the originals. So it is good to travel abroad and expand your horizons and try the food as it is. There is a whole world of food to discover as you travel so why not send your taste buds on a global trip with some of the world’s most bizzare but amazing traditional foods.

MALAYSIA Malaysia has its fair share of unusual foods that may put off visitors with a weak stomach. From the ‘rich king of fruits’ to herbal soups with buffalo organs to bitter beans with shrimp paste, these bizarre food are not only tasty but contains some health benefits too. Besides that, it is also an exciting experience for your palates.

Torpedo soup

Torpedo soup is actually buffalo’s male productive organ soup and it is considered to be an aphrodisiac. The soup is supposedly good for the health of a man. The meat could be as long as two feet but it is sliced into smaller pieces and cooked as a stew.

Red Durian

Known among the ethnic group in Sabah, called the Kadazandusun community, the fruit is also called “durian hutan”, as it is mainly found growing wild in the jungles of Sabah in Northern Borneo. Its’ flesh is said to be thinner and drier compared with the cultivated fruit which is of thicker and creamier in texture. The taste is about similar with other durians, although it is described as sweetish sour and not as aromatic as the renowned yellow coloured durian.

Chicken Feet

Deep-fried, steamed or braised chicken feet are a popular street food that can

be found in some wet market in Kuala Lumpur. As a whole chicken feet only consist of bones, skin and tendons, it is believed that this tasty morsel is a good source of protein, calcium, collagen and cartilage.

Stinky Tofu

The stink in the stinky tofu is from a fermented brine made from fermented milk, vegetables, meat and shrimp. Fresh tofu is immersed in the brine for a day or two to get its flavour. The smell of stinky tofu is quite overpowering. You will need to overcome your natural instinct not to eat food with a rotten smell to try this snack.

Turtle Jelly

Turtle Jelly is a Chinese medicine that is sold as a dessert. It is believed to be good for your skin, as well as improving circulation, reducing acne and assisting the health of your kidneys. Turtle Jelly is an acquired taste, slightly bitter and can be sweetened by adding some syrup. Stinky tofu Picture by LW Yang

Beefsteak Fungus

Snake Soup

Snake soup is a true Cantonese delicacy and one of the favourite tastings in Hong Kong. This soup is surprisingly tasty and it typically contains two types of snakes, some of which are venomous, and is thick with a complex flavour comprising, among other things, ginger, lemon leaves, fungus, and sometimes star anise. While the snake meat itself tastes like chicken, it is the flavour of the soup that locals and tourist love.

AUSTRALIA In a land as large and diverse as Australia there is a lot of local grub to explore. From delicious seafood to traditional desserts that is exclusively Down Under.

similar to a slab of raw meat. Known as Numar by aborigines, it fruits on Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) trees, producing a slow decay in the wood called ‘pencilling’ or ‘black fleck’.

Horned Melon

The name “horned melon” comes from the fruit’s unusual appearance, as the outer layer of orange or gold skin is covered in small spikes. The inside of the fruit does have the gelatinous appearance of a kiwi, but the inner layer of fruit pulp is the primary culinary ingredient.

Moreton Bay Bug

Moreton Bay Bugs are not just an everyday bug one finds in the bush. These amazing sea creatures have a distinct red-brown carapace or shell. With its very short tail and five pairs of legs, these shelled wonders can bury themselves in sand during the day. Unlike any other crustaceans, the edible meat of Moreton bay bugs can only found on their tail part. They can also make a great meal with fresh lemon

and can be eaten as mouth-watering salad or cooked on the barbecue.

VIETNAM There is a local Vietnamese saying that when a man encounters a new animal, his first question is: “Is it dangerous?” and the second question is: “Is it edible?” The Vietnamese are adventurous eaters, and they are not afraid to eat the whole animal, blood, guts and all.

Fetal Duck Egg

Fertilised duck eggs are very popular snacks and appetizer in this part of Asia. The contents are much harder than a conventional boiled egg, with a partially formed duck fetus inside. There may be visible signs of feathers but they dissolve in the mouth. The top is cracked, juices slurped, and then the contents are eaten with a spoon.

Duck Blood Pudding Tiet canh is a traditional dish of blood and cooked meat in northern Vietnamese cuisine. The most popular is tie’t canh vit made from raw duck blood and duck meat. To make it, freshly drawn blood is collected in a bowl, and prevented from premature coagulation by mixing it with some fish sauce of certain proportions, usually three to five soup spoons of fish sauce for one liter of blood.

Squid Teeth

Squid teeth (rang muc) is another example of Vietnamese resourcefulness. The mouth parts of squid form a white, marble-sized ball with a tiny black beak protruding at the end. Steamed with ginger or grilled on a kebab or fried in

batter, it is a popular after-school snack or market food.

INDONESIA Indonesia has a very rich culinary heritage. Every province in Indonesia has its own specialty dishes with various ingredients. Many Indonesian dishes are made from vegetables, chicken, fishes, meat or lamb. Here are some Indonesian dishes with main ingredients that are unexpected and beyond imagination.

Kopi Luwak

Kopi luwak is made from coffee beans plucked from civets’ feces. It is said to be one of the world’s most expensive coffee, and it is made from poop. Or rather, it is made from coffee beans that are partially digested and then pooped out by the civet, a catlike creature. The coffee taste a bit nutty and delicious

Sate Susu

It is actually skewered cow udder. At a glance, it may look like any other

satay made from white meat, but you will recognise this by its chewy texture. Considered a delicacy, Sate Susu can only be found during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Kakul (freshwater snails) These rice field snails are a valuable source of protein for agrarian communities in Bali. The snails are gathered from the mud, shells cracked open, then washed. They are then boiled before cooked into soups, salads or prepared on skewers to be grilled as satays, together with a blend of Balinese spices.

NORTH &SOUTH

THE

POLE OF VIETNAM By Archana Singh

18 | M ALIND OM AG | O CTO B ER 2 017

Vietnam is a treasure trove for nature, history and culture devotees. A snake like narrow country will spoil you with choices – from booming modern cities, colonial towns, traditional villages, UNESCO World Heritage sites, archaeological marvels to otherworldly islands. You name it and Vietnam has it. Therefore, it is a tough job deciding which place to visit first in Vietnam, especially if the decision is split between choosing Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

VOYAGE | V IETN A M

Hanoi has Imperial French colonial buildings, Ho Chi Minh City has old Saigon’s historic hotels overlooking the Belle Époque Opera House. Hanoi is embellished with the tranquil waters of Lake Hoan Kiem, Ho Chi Minh City has a disturbing, confronting War Remnants Museum. Comparing the two metropolises of Vietnam is like comparing North and South Pole. Each city is as different as Delhi and Mumbai - both geographically and culturally. Ideally you should visit both but if you cannot, here are some things to consider.

Ho Chi Minh City

As you step into Ho Chi Minh City carrying the Vietnam War relics on your mind but what you will see is a 180-degree transformation. The largest city of the country with a population of 9 million has moved on from a dreadful past and transformed into a modern global city. The influence of foreign cultures

– particularly American and French is evident everywhere. As you walk through the thoroughfares of Saigon, you can feel the spontaneous and open vibe of the city. A city, where innovation is king and young trendsetters lead the way, alongside thriving gadget-totting entrepreneurs and booming businesses. The financial capital of the country has more investment, better infrastructure, swanky hotels, upmarket restaurants and throbbing nightlife. Unfortunately, traffic and pollution have come as an add-on with the spectacular growth of the city over the last several years. Ho Chi Minh City juxtaposes the past and the present like no other. While you enjoy the modern flair of the city, its past is difficult to ignore. Especially, the War Remnants Museum, which has graphic details of the Vietnam War and the Reunification Palace, which looks exactly as it was when the North Vietnamese forces took over in April 1975. The street food and coffee culture

is ubiquitous in HCMC but tends to be slightly sweeter than what you find in Hanoi. For shopaholics, there are a plethora of options such as Ben Thanh market for cheap souvenir options, or Dong Khoi for upmarket boutiques. Also, the southern city is the king of the malls. Shop till you drop is a mantra here. One should check out day trips to the Cu Chi Tunnels, Mekong Delta, Cái Bè Floating Market and Cần Giờ Mangrove Forest With so much to see and do in HCMC, it is impossible to not get infected by its high energy. People work hard and play harder in this dynamic city. It is definitely worth a visit. After exploring the southern city of the country, it was time to move North.

VOYAGE | V IETN A M

Hanoi The capital city is famous for its thousands of colonial era buildings and over two dozen exotic lakes. Known as the “Paris of Asia”, Hanoi exudes grace and grandeur through its appearance and architecture amidst the chaos of modern day living. Hanoi is a melting pot of the historic charm and the expansion of modern realms. A place still preserving grand old boulevards and ancient pagodas where locals practice their tai chi moves beside tree-fringed lakes. You cannot find a single dull moment walking the narrow-congested streets of the Old Quarter. During the day, it is a thriving hub for commerce selling everything under the sun at throwaway prices. In the evening, it transforms into one giant street food market. The transformation is so quick that you almost can get lost. Hanoi is the home of pho (noodle soup), Vietnam’s national dish, which you can get on just about any street corner for as little as a dollar. The best thing about Hanoi is the pace of things in the country as it is laid back and affordable. If you arrived with an empty bag, Hanoi is where you want to be. There is so much to shop - superior choice of crafts, silk accessories, handmade goods, wood-and stone-carvings, embroideries, lacquerware, and export surplus items. Hanoi is peppered with attractions like Hoan Kiem Lake, the Ngoc Son Temple, the French Quarter and the Hanoi Hilton, Temple of Literature, the Vietnam Army Museum, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Nha Tho Cathedral among many others. For a day trip from Hanoi, you can always escape to Ha Long Bay, a dreamy seascape of jagged limestone rocks jutting out over calm waters is Vietnam’s number one tourist attraction. So, in a nutshell, this is a tale of two great cities of Vietnam. You should choose a city that best fits your tastes and interests. If you prefer high-energy bustle, head to Ho Chi Minh City; if you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, visit Hanoi. But whichever you choose, your visit will be a rewarding one. 2 0 | M ALIND OM AG | O CTO B ER 2 017

Ancient India’s Best-Kept Secret

H

eard about Ayurvedic massage. A massage that uses Ayurvedic products that are organic and medicinal in nature. It is not just a massage but the oil nourishes the body and known to decrease the effects of aging. The Ayur Centre in Petaling Jaya uses centuries-old technique to revive the softness, strength and colour to the body and transports you into a zen mode. Ayurveda is a traditional and natural way of healing, rejuvenating and reviving one’s body, mind and spirit through the use of herbs and restorative medicinal oils with deep curative massages. Called Abhyanga, whereby the therapists anoints the body with oil. Often infused with herbs and usually warm, the oil is massaged into the entire body before bathing. It can be beneficial for maintaining health and is used therapeutically for certain ailments. Before the massage, you will go in for consultation whereby the Ayurvedic doctor will consult you on medical history as well as a review of your lifestyle, stress levels, health concerns and sleeping patterns before deciding which oil is suitable for you. Generally, sesame oil is used as the base of all medicated oils. These medicated oils are applied to the body after which the therapist massages your body for 45 minutes. Among the many benefits of this treatment is that such massages help to moisten and lubricate the skin. The Ayurvedic massage strokes vary

from deep to superficial and follow the flow of energy channels, nerve pathways and hair growth. There are three types of movements – active (strong pressure), passive (delicate stroking) and persuasive (pinching or kneading the small muscles with the thumb and forefinger). Abhyanga provides the means for transdermal absorption of the healing qualities of the material used in the massage, and it helps the skin, which is the largest organ in the body, to perform its diverse functions efficiently,

whether it is allowing toxins to be released from the body or nourishment to be absorbed by the tissues. Travelling Strait Across By Sara Nabila Harris

Malacca & Pekanbaru “

An-Nur Great Mosque

Since the 17th Century, the Strait of Malacca has been the main shipping channel between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. ”

With stunning riverside views and fascinating heritage sites; Pekanbaru, Indonesia and Malacca, Malaysia are two charming cities on opposite ends of The Strait of Malacca waiting for you to explore. Since the 17th century, The Strait of Malacca has been the main shipping channel between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The strait stretches 890km between Peninsular Malaysia and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Several major regional powers such as the Malay, Portuguese, Dutch and British managed the straits during different historical periods giving both Pekanbaru and Melaka captivating pasts –the remains of which you can still spot today. Pekanbaru and Malacca are beautiful anytime of the year, but if you are trying to avoid the monsoon season the best time to visit is between April and October. You can still journey from Pekanbaru to Malacca by boat, each way will take from six to seven hours. A flight is shorter and takes only about an hour each way.

PEKANBARU Pekanbaru is the capital of the Riau, Indonesia. The name ‘Pekanbaru’ means ‘new town’ when translated to English. The city is known for being exceptionally clean and is divided into 12 sub-districts, each with its own flare.

Things to do in Pekanbaru Walk around the An-Nur Great Mosque Completed in 1968, this magnificent structure is the city’s biggest mosque and can accommodate about 4,500 worshipers. Known as Indonesia’s Taj Mahal, its architectural styles include Malay, Turkish, Arabic and Indian design.

Visit the Sang Nila Utama Museum This lovely heritage museum collects Riau-Malay items, including wedding costumes, traditional toys, musical instruments and other traditional artifacts.

Explore Muara Takus This Buddhist temple complex is believed to belong to the Srivijaya empire. Its surviving temples and other archaeological remains are said to date back to the 11th and 12th century AD.

MALACCA Malacca is the capital city of Melaka, Malaysia. Melaka is known as ‘the historic state’ of Malaysia. Malacca City was declared a cultural UNESCO world heritage site in 2008. The city’s architecture is a remarkable blend of

Malay, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British influence.

Things to do in Malacca Walk around Dutch Square Marvel at the terracotta-red colonial Dutch buildings built between 1660 and 1700. Now a collection of museums, the Stadthuys originally served as the official residence of the Dutch governors and was used as a town hall throughout the British administration.

The Melaka River

Go on a River Cruise The Melaka River is where the city began and plays a key role in Melaka’s colourful history. Cruising along the river is a great way to see sights in comfort, without breaking the bank.

Stroll along Jonker Street Jonker is the centre street of Chinatown. It was once renowned for its antique shops. Over the years it has turned in to a hotspot for clothing, crafts outlets, and restaurants. Datuk Rizalman Ibrahim is one of Malaysia’s celebrated fashion designers. He started from a humble beginning in Penang and went on to the bustling capital of Kuala Lumpur and now internationally. He has come a long way, expanding his creativity with a total of five companies under his name from bridal design, couture design, interior design, as well as bespoke and readyto-wear designs. As the Designer is known for his meticulous craft and deft combination of classic elements with contemporary design, he is synonymous with luxurious fashion creations — from formfitting garments to flowy

kaftans and from frills to peplums. “Couture is my first love and I have enjoyed the excitement in putting together the full scale fashion shows for the couture collections. Unfortunately, my biggest enemy now is time. Twenty four hours in a day is just not enough,” quipped Rizalman during an interview with MalindoMag. His other love is travelling. He believes that travel opens up the mind and easy to get inspired from different cultures around the world. “A comfortable airline goes a long way when you are on the move very often. I find Malindo Air fulfills that with their good quality services. Another thing that attracted me was the traditional Balinese outfit. I like an

airline that sticks to tradition,” added Rizalman. This year, the renowned fashion designer celebrates his 25th Silver Jubilee year milestone in the industry, by kicking things off with a bang – a television series on Life Inspired. An original production by the television channel that promotes inspirational living for the cosmopolitan trend seekers, Rizalman premiered to the Asian public back in May with one last show on the preparation that went on for a celebratory fashion show meant for hundreds of attendees. The show is more than a reality programme. Exposure to drama is becoming superficial and Rizalman is determined to let the viewers see as much as possible so that viewers get a picture of what really happens behind-the-scenes and look into his life. He wants the audience to see the show more like a documentary where drama is not all the way included. As a designer, Rizalman loves minimalist styles with a dose of glitz and glamour. Rizalman also wears many hats. He is a wedding planner, an interior decorator, a fashion guru, an entrepreneur and a doting father to two sons. He believes that creativity is his drive and loves to try out different industries. He has also written an autobiography on himself and is now interested in directing a film. You have to give it to the Singaporean team who has made something possible out of initial imagination. Fans can take a wonderful memory lane at Central Perk, get into the nostalgia mode, as much attention has been put into the details and décor. The dishes on the menu are decided after the team watched the entire show and picked out representative food items. The mains include Janice’s Oh My God Baby Back Ribs, Ahh Unagi, Phoebe’s I Can’t Eat Meat Steak, Chandler’s Thanksgiving Whole Roasted Chicken, Joey’s

Fisherman Stew and Joey’s You’re My Everest Turkey. Located at Central Mall, the café stays true to the whole atmosphere of its fictional namesake in the series. From the couch where the friends always hang out, to the coffee bar (Gunther not included), to the side window where you can see the Central Perk sign, the entire set-up will all look too familiar to fans.
