CEO’s Note

W

e are down to the final quarter of the year, and this usually marks the beginning of the year-end holiday moods with a series of festivities lined up till the end of the year. Early planning for travel is significant to ensure flight availability while enjoying affordable rates, as it is the busiest time of the year for people taking a long deserved break or visiting family and friends in conjunction with the celebrations ahead, beginning from Halloween, followed by Diwali, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, up to New Year. Having said that, as off this month you would have two more new routes to consider in your travel plans. We are extending our

network with the introduction of our service between Kuala Lumpur and Kolkata, India on 22nd of October. The city is known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals. It is also home to Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa. The other new route is from Kota Kinabalu of Sabah to Kuching, Sarawak, commencing 28 October. Both these cities in East Malaysia are well-known for beautiful beaches, mountains, national parks, unique cuisines and rich cultures. The cover story this month is an interesting read on backpackers and glampackers, which are two common but distinctive ways of travelling these days. One is related to a comfort and luxurious vacation lifestyle compared to the other which is usually on a smaller budget

making it a more spontaneous adventure. For a virtual journey and ideas for your travel itinerary, our Voyage segment this issue presents the “Green City” of China - Naning, which was just launched last August. In conjunction with Halloween celebration end of this month, our other Voyage segment covers the thrilling festivity that is celebrated around the world. The excitement of dressing up in your favourite character, mostly “spooky” ones, followed by the traditional ‘trick or treat’ adventure, and simply enjoying a feast and fun time with loved ones. Till next month, all the best in your travel plans. Follow us closely for more options and vacation ideas on destinations within our network. Thank you for loyal patronage and have a pleasant journey with Malindo Air.

BACKPACKERS vsGLAMPACKERS The travel industry is witnessing a growing trend in the quantity of travellers exploring the length and breadth of the globe. There are many modes of travelling style that fits the different personalities of travellers. Backpacking over the years has evolved as the demographics in it have changed, and now there are backpackers of all ages, creeds and backgrounds. It is travelling in comfort and style versus low cost and independent travel. It all boils down to your affordability and preference. Whichever the destinations may be, it is the method of travelling that defines backpackers and glampackers. A backpacker is commonly known to pack a bag and go on a more spontaneous exploring trip, while a Glampacker prefers to pack everything in a roller suitcase and enjoy the destination with pre-planned itineraries. In today’s day and age, more and more people are going places to discover new things and to experience the freedom of exploring new destinations. You are bound to meet new acquaintances and friends, and for the most part everyone has their own unique stories to tell. Backpackers Backpacking was once the cheap way for the younger generation to explore the world and experience new cultures. Traditionally backpackers travelled light, without expensive electronic equipment like laptops, tablets or handphones. However the desire to stay connected has encouraged millennial backpackers to carry a range of electronic gadgets just to be connected to the world especially now in the era of social media. Backpacking is more like going to a destination where your mind is tempting you to travel without any plans. Backpackers mostly prefers public transportation and inexpensive lodging such as youth hostels or couch surfing so they can save the money and get most out of their trip. They are the real budget travellers. They will mostly depend on public transportation and prefer local food and beverages.

Backpackers

They are also an easy spot on, as backpackers can be found wearing anything from fisherman pants to shorts and t-shirts and walking shoes carrying all their essentials in a backpack. For backpackers, it is to live a different life by seeking to understand the life experiences of other people. They love to immerse in the local experience: eating the food, conversing with locals and living as closely as possible to the manner in which the local people live. Backpackers are more about collecting unique pieces of physical culture from the places they visit. As a result of backpacking, their values will get shaped and they also gain lifetime experiences. Glampackers Glampackers prefers to adapt to their environment by pre-planning and using technology to guide their journey. They are commonly not the risk-takers or spontaneous when it comes to travel plans. Today’s glampackers are seeking a broader range of activities and experiences than the traditional backpackers and instead of simply ‘going with the flow’; they have set schedules of things to do or places to visit within their valuable time. Glampackers travel in style. They tend to be trendy with their clother and shoes. They are also the people who has the passion for travel but do 10 | M ALIND OM AG | O CTO B ER 2 018

not want to struggle in their journey. They are typically more at ease financially than the average backpacker, so their objective behind travelling could either be recreational or a career break. These travellers normally tend to be either a little older or with family and have a little more income and greater expectation. They are expected to come with higher end palate and will be seen treating themselves to a nice breakfast or dinner, while keeping the budget smaller for the rest of the meals. Boutique hotels or other form of luxury accommodation are preferred over the usual hostels and budget travel stops of the backpackers. Glampackers tend to return with loaded baggages than what they initially had taken. Shopping is definitely part of their excursions. They will opt to take a flight over a 10 hour bus ride. They are usually travelling faster and spending more money. The glampacker usually knows where they want to go once they are in a place and will usually schedule their plans. A return ticket would have likely been booked Glampackers

Unveiling Natural By Zeenee Coogan

It has several nicknames like Five-Elephant City and Green City, making Nanning home to a culture like no other.

18 | M ALIND OM AG | O CTO B ER 2 018

Nanning, a city in Guangxi province, is one of China’s best-kept secrets. Green, clean, cultured and pleasant, it is one of the country’s most relaxed and friendly big cities. Nanning is an interesting mix of people and cultures. Walking down the city’s wide avenues or narrow lanes, alert ears will notice that aside from Mandarin, there are plenty of people speaking Cantonese, as the city is on the western frontier of the Cantonese sphere of influence. The other prominent language is Zhuang, which is part of the Tai language family, which also includes Thai and Laotian. Not only do many people in Nanning speak Zhuang, official signs throughout the city also conspicuously feature the language. As China continues to develop its so-called second- and third-tier cities, Nanning, the “green city,” can be a perfect escape from the pollution and stress of typical urban living. With Nanning, nature is still at the heart

of progress. The green metropolis promises fine museums, parks to explore, and easy access to the beauty of northern Vietnam. The best time to visit is October and November, which is Nanning’s festival season. Catch folk music, food events, and great sightseeing weather when you visit in the fall. Revel in the lush landscape What makes Nanning a standout from other cities in China is that despite the rise of more buildings, one can still see and enjoy huge patches of greenery. Nanning’s humid subtropical climate translates into lush tropical foliage throughout the city. There are plenty of parks throughout the city, the most prominent being Nanhu Park. Nanhu Park borders a long narrow lake that stretches from southwest to northeast in the heart of downtown Nanning. Once contaminated and

foetid, the small lake has since been rehabilitated and is now a magnet for runners, walkers, sitters and chatters. In addition to Nanhu Park, there are several other parks around Nanning where one can enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. People’s Park, the other major green area in the city centre, has a large hill and a small lake of its own and is packed with people every weekend. One of the most visited, and the greenest, spots in the whole of Nanning is Qingxiu Shan, or Mt. Qingxiu Park. The park, which covers more than four square kilometres, is not actually a mountain but a series of hills, along with other natural and man-made attractions. Thanks to the abundance of trees and verdant fields, Qingxiu Shan provides fresh air to the city’s residents and visitors, serving as the “lungs” of Nanning. Endless gastronomical delights Guangxi’s cuisine is among the best in China, with great noodle, chicken, and pancake specialties to try. Of course, one cannot miss tasting the flavours of China by visiting Zhongshan Lu, Nanning’s food street. The whole stretch features stalls and restaurants serving different dishes – from the flaming-hot “stinky tofu” of Changsha, to grilled garlic-topped oysters, to the oddly-appetizing fried insects like scorpions and worms, to the cooling ice cream on waffle cone and the refreshing Harbin beer. Throughout the city there is a good selection of Chinese food, with Cantonese, Sichuanese, and north-eastern cuisines being the most popular. As for local dishes, the most popular is fen, flat rice noodles in a meat broth with chunks of meat and vegetables and a do-it-yourself selection of herbs and spices. It may not have the nightlife of other southwestern Chinese cities, but there is still plenty to do when the sun goes down in Nanning. One of the better areas to get dinner is behind the Admiral City mall. This area has

H ALLOW EEN CR EEPS

Halloween Creeps By Emily Lowe

Observed in some countries in the West annually on 31st October, Halloween originated from a Celtic festival some 2000 years ago, called Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The day, also New Year’s eve, marked the end of the summer harvesting season and the transition to a harsh winter. The Celts believed that this was a day when the fine line between living and dead was blurred, and it was a time when spirits roamed the living world. Hence, Samhain was hosted, with the Celts dressed in costumes of animal heads for the occasion. Bonfires were lit, while crops were burnt and animals slaughtered as sacrifices to the Celtic deities, all to scare away otherworldly beings. Hence, Halloween, or All Hallows’ Evening and All Saints’ Eve, was also a day to remember those who have passed on. Halloween in Malaysia Celebrated in a more commercial manner, revellers dress in their ghoulish best to party the hours away. But the night of frights can be more than drinking and dancing. So, what else is there to do to commemorate it? Halloween in Malaysia gets bigger and better over the years. At Sunway Lagoon, it is time to face the fear on the Nights of Fright. Held for the sixth 24 | M ALIND OM AG | O CTO B ER 2 018

consecutive year, this Festival of Fear is touted to be scarier than ever with its various haunted attractions and scare zones. Happening every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 7.30pm to 11.30pm throughout the month of October, waiting for you are The Legend of the Mist, Coulrophobia The Fear of Clowns, Incident at the Slaughterhouse and many more. Dare you set foot in Sunway Lagoon to face your fear head on? Run for your life Friends on Penang Island can join in the fun, or rather fright, by participating in the 2nd Penang Halloween Hustle Night Run 2018, a 6km non-competitive walk/run with scary zombies. Let’s see how many participants can still keep a slow pace, with zombies running alongside them! A similar run is being organised in Kota Kinabalu. Participants are encouraged to be as creative as possible and run in their scariest makeup. This is the only way to outrun the ghosts in this exciting Halloween Run. Not in Penang or Kota Kinabalu? Sign up for the Halloween Skeleton Virtual Run 2018, which means you can be virtually anywhere and still take part in the run! But what about the evil spirits, you may ask. They are all in your imagination!

Let’s see how many participants can still keep a slow pace, with zombies running alongside them!

Up north in Metropolitan Bangkok, it may not be the best city for trickor-treating, but it is just a matter of knowing where to go. Silom Soi 4 is one of the most happening spots during Halloween, so wear your scariest costume to this street party. Additionally, bars, clubs and restaurants along this strip are sure to organise their own Halloween festivities, so be prepared to let your hair down, if you are brave enough to venture into the street of Silom Soi 4! Halloween in Singapore Across the Causeway in the little red dot of Singapore, what is in store for us is the eighth edition of Southeast Asia’s largest and most intense Halloween event. Hosted at Universal Studios Singapore, original Asian-themed scare acts and Western horrors are bound to make even the bravest visitor scream at the top of his lungs. Available for 15 nights in October, this is one Halloween event that is not to be missed should you find yourself in Singapore during this ghoulish season. Kids are not left out too, as they can have their own spooky fun at KidZania Singapore’s SpookyTown. The town’s mayor is recruiting gutsy kids to help uncover the truth of The Lost Carnival, which made the entire town’s residents, apart from Mayor Fabiola, to go missing following a mysterious explosion caused by Dr SpookZ, the town’s alchemist.

Halloween in Melbourne Down under in Melbourne, Australia, brace yourself for the Spooktober Halloween Festival at St. Kilda Town Hall. For five full evenings from Halloween night, witness the Spooky Stage come alive with themed performances, and participate in many more games and activities, including two haunted houses, infested with hungry spirits. Over at Luna Park, the historic theme park is hosting Luna Dark 2018, Melbourne’s biggest kid-friendly costume party. Tread with care, as the park is roaming with spooks with only one dedicated mission in mind: they scare the living daylights out of you! Time to plan a Halloween escape to any of the destination above to celebrate the spooky festival that best suits your idea of fun.

Sunday Brunches are all about relaxing with loved ones. The Sunday Market Brunch at Feast, Sheraton Kuta Resort Bali is all about ethnic Martinis made with infused spirits and loads of fresh seafood including the signature Live Mud Crab. Feast, located right on the edge of sea offers a comfortable eating experience that celebrates the true easy going nature of Bali. Not only can you eat on the outdoor patio, you can also grab some souvenirs while shopping from the Kuta Beach Walk Shopping Mall. The restaurant also doubles up as a market for shopping up on some fresh produce, groceries and even pre-made items to go. As most of the stalls feature local farmers, artisans and vendors, it is truly a unique way to experience the culture of Bali. The restaurant itself is a bustle of activity with wide open spaces along with full length glass walls allowing for a fun, exuberant meal. The contemporary interiors are offset with bright pink patches everywhere. There are a plethora of stations from which you can choose the type of food you want including a section on Western Grills, Asian Section, the Seafood Bar and even a Tandoori section.

Sunday Market Brunch at Feast By Sudipto De

We suggest starting off with some of their signature cocktails or even a glass of wine from Starwood’s Wines of the World collection. A marvellous selection of fresh seafood means that every slice of Sushi and Sashimi tastes perfect on the palate. There are also some oysters and mussels that you must try out. The Teppan styled Western Grill allows you to enjoy everything starting from Lamb racks to Steaks. Lovers of Indian food must try out the Tandoori section here. The Tandoori Chicken has the quintessential smoky flavour that is so characteristic of it while a range of Kebabs and Naans satiate the Indie cravings. But it is the Asian station that acts as the mainstay of the restaurant. With dishes from all over South East Asia, you can find your favourites from not only the local Balinese and Javanese cuisine but also from China, Thailand and even Vietnam. Head over to the Sweet Bar next which hosts a delectable range of sweet dishes that will give you the perfect sugar rush to end your meal. Lily’s fresh coffee and gelato along with a handful of freshly made pastries are our picks from the dessert bar.

Nadarajah: Activist At Heart Growing up in Petaling Jaya, Educational, Welfare & Research Foundation (EWRF) President Nadarajah Kulandavelu grew up in a upper middle-income family and was pretty much shielded from socioeconomic challenges faced by lower income families. He pursued his career in teaching and spent initial years teaching in Tawau which was the starting point for community development initiatives targeting the students from poor families over there. After returning to Ampang in 1992, he was shocked to see the social illness among the Indian community and the Indian students in secondary school. SMK Taman Tasik hit The Malay Mail headlines as “Sekolah Hantu” in 1993 and he decided he must address this issue. He started off a football programme targeting students with disciplinary issues with the intention of instilling positive values and after few years, results were positive. In 2006, the same school was nominated as “Sekolah Harapan Negara”. At the same time, he realised such initiatives must be replicated elsewhere and joined EWRF (Educational, Welfare & Research Foundation) to scale up the programme. Since then, Nadarajah has been actively involved in various community development programmes like student empowerment, placement in skills training institutions, guidance for parents, welfare assistance and so forth. The student empowerment programme gradually morphed into the CSIP (Civil Society Intervention Programme) and in 2009, the programme was expanded to other “hotspot” schools in the country. With almost 6,000 Indian students dropping out of school before completing SPM, it was crucial to reach out to these atrisk students before they step into the

After all these years of contribution, Nadarajah felt that he and his family gained a lot from being in service to others. His son transformed from an introvert to an extrovert with a clear purpose in his life after volunteering with EWRF. Similarly, volunteering brought out many hidden talents in his daughter, Pavitra. Nadarajah feels the responsibility of transforming the community does not lie with the government alone. All stakeholders – government, businesses, civil society and public must work together to bring about the change in the community.

Creativity

Planning an event takes a wide range of skills and creativity. Most importantly, genuine passion helps turn any event into a great party or occasion. Seeking to be different, Aruna Balasubramaniam has honed her skills in event management and party planning in Melbourne, Australia. Since a little kid, Aruna was exposed to organising and planning as her parents were very active in Rotary and Innerwheel Club. That is when she realised she had a liking towards event planning. “I pursued my career in the media industry. Although I was an operation manager and later Account Manager, I could never run away from event management. I was always asked to help out or sometimes even head the events organised because my bosses knew I had a passion for it and I will look into every expect in order to make it successful,” said Aruna. Decoration is an important part of her party planning. When she is asked to plan a party, she first thinks of a theme. Once it is decided, she starts picturing the deco that would go along with it. “My imagination has no limits and I can sometimes go overboard. Thankfully I have a very supportive husband, Ravindran Nadarajan by my side to make most of my imagination a reality. I make him do all the hardy job. Once I did a Jurassic World theme for my nephew’s birthday. I wanted a medium sized Jurassic World Entrance opening up to a world of dinosaurs with dimly lighted pillar and smoky effect. He did a perfect job on it. I always ask for the most difficult things. For my son’s 1st birthday, I wanted a life sized train in our backyard and Ravi joked he would be able to complete it for my son’s third birthday if he starts now,” added Aruna. Besides being a party planner, she also loves doing music video production. She has done several pre-birthday and prewedding video production for her family members.
