outh East Asia is a colourful mix of pristine beaches, chaotic cities, quaint towns, hidden islands, UNESCO world heritage sites and an array of options for all kinds of travellers. What comes to your mind when you hear the term “offbeat”? It may make absolutely no sense. However, Offbeat in literal terms stands for “off the beaten track”. In this context, it refers to a place that is not on most traveller’s bucket list and tour operator’s radar. Wherein it is considered to be exceptionally unique. Since these locations will not have any popular shopping malls, big attractions and drive hordes of tourists every weekend, these days, experiential travellers seek out such hidden gems.
Cost Effective Off beat spots are not frequented by tourists and hence, it helps to keep costs low. Visiting a quaint village in India, for example, can be much more affordable than opting to see the grandeur of Taj Mahal.
Privacy Such locations offer peace, serenity and privacy beyond the maddening crowds, which many travellers seek these days. Coming from big cities themselves, a vacation is the ultimate downtime for most tourists and getting some “me time” is always appreciated.

Why go off the beaten Plan your own trip path? With so many popular tourist spots and dazzling cities with perfect skylines, some travellers desire to take the path less travelled.

Explore the Unexplored Man’s fascination with the unexplored goes back to the ice age. There is always a certain mystery and charm attached to stepping into an unknown abyss. That is exactly what drives us to explore further and see places which are not found on any tour itinerary. Now we all cannot be Marco Polo but one surely can find hidden gems in any country and city if they desire.
Since there is little or no information about these spots online, you will most likely ask the locals for help and in turn make lifelong bonds or explore on your own. Either way, it is a lot of fun, plus, you avoid long queues and save time to actually see and enjoy a particular destination thoroughly. This encourages a stress free and cost effective option for exploring unknown lands. Here are few options to whet your appetite and introduce you to off-beat travel, without taking you too far from the city life and popular spots. If you do not want to push yourself out of your comfort zone, these ideas can be spot on for planning your next getaway.

Bako National Park
MALAYSIA Malaysia, like any other country, has an array of exciting spots to uncover. Borneo is one of the top places in Malaysia even though travellers frequent the Peninsular Malaysia. With frequent flights into Kuching, connectivity into Borneo is excellent. Within this cat city, there is a lot to explore
from cat museums, cafes, lively street culture, pubs and more. However, if you go a little further from the main town, you will be in the wild – quite literally! An overnight stay at Satang Island can be very fruitful if you want to see how turtle conservation works. You can do night patrolling on the beach with rangers and actually see the sea turtles (if you are lucky) come to the beach Satang Island
and lay hundreds of eggs – right in front of you! This can be once in a lifetime experience. During daytime, the island is full of day trippers and the turtles only ever come out in wee hours of morning (around 3am). Plus, the island only allows a handful of visitors to stay overnight, so a night stay is highly recommended for the ultimate private island experience. Bako national park is another great option from Kuching for experiential nature loving travellers. This park has the largest density of long-nosed Proboscis monkeys, Bornean bearded pig, beautiful rainforest birds and other remarkable species of flora and fauna. If you wish to head west, Selangor with the royal Klang town and the lovely Kuala Kubu Bharu is the best option. Just an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor can be the best short off beat getaway in Malaysia.

INDONESIA Indonesia has many unconventional vacation spots and the diversity goes beyond the popular beaches of Bali. Bandung is one amazing hill city which is not on most tourists list unless it comes as a stop-over in-between destinations. This student city has many amazing hikes which not even locals or expats know of. Tebin Keraton and Gunung Batu are two amazing short hikes one can enjoy in Bandung and make a nice day out of it. Dago Pakar is the upscale area with amazing cafe culture and pub life. For a tourist visiting Bandung, based on your preferences, there is a lot one can enjoy but beware – it is the most laid back city you will ever visit – so ensure you keep few days to just relax and unwind.
Labuan Bajo, which is a short flight from Bali is also known as ‘The Land of the Dragons’. It is popular spot for tourists looking for a glimpse of the mighty Komodo dragon, which can only be found on this island in the entire world. Needless to say they are a must see if you happen to be on Komodo Island but if you want to move away from the crowds, go enjoy a sunset at Padar Island. A short 45 minute hike up the hill gives you a bird’s eye view of the entire island in the most spectacular sun-kissed setting you would ever see.
VIETNAM Want to explore beyond Saigon, Hanoi and Halong Bay? Well, then you are in the right place! Vietnam with its lovely mountains, beaches and scenic beauty is a magical country. at your own pace. This is the best way to see Vietnam and explore those hidden spots enroute. Da Lat is a fascinating option if you want to stay in a city with all amenities but not surrounded by 10 million motorbikes, as it is in Ho Chi Minh city. With modern colonial style architecture as well as Gaudi inspired Crazy House and Maze bar and plenty of natural waterfalls – Da Lat must be on every traveller’s list. Plus once you rent your two-wheeler, you will be crossing villages, paddy fields and can literally stop and do a traditional village stay anywhere – Vietnamese people are extremely pleasant and welcoming, contrary to what some might

CHINA Sanya is the ultimate beach destination in China’s Hainan Island. Yes, you heard that right – In China! No one really considers China to be a beach destination. Apart from hoards of locals and Asians, Sanya receives only a handful of westerners. Admittedly, the beaches are not the best but the fancy beach front resorts and the laid back vibe will make you want to visit. Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone is spread across 45 sq kilometres and promises to charm you. This is the perfect day out for families and friends with options to hike, photo opportunities and pretty parks all around. You can get on a HOHO bus which run throughout the park and you get an audio guide in 4 different languages with a map to help you navigate. As you move around the zone, your hand-held map lights up with a red dot showing you the current location. Even though Yanoda in itself is a popular tourist attraction and not really offbeat, but most people visiting Yanoda are not really hikers, I can safely say this is a hikers’ paradise.

THAILAND Thailand is vast and wonderful which makes it one of the top travel destinations of Asia. Having said that, even the most popular countries will have places which have managed to keep a safe distance from the usual tourist traps. If you try to search in your own city, you will find places that are not frequented by tourists and have withheld their charm. Two such villages that could steal your heart are in Chiang Mai – Doi Mon Chaem and Ban Rai Kong Khing. 12 | M ALIND OM AG | S EPTEM B ER 2 017
Traditional Thai “Fire massage”
Wooden Go-Kart, Thailand
At Doi Mon Chaem, you can go down a hill in a small rickety wooden go kart. They call it “mountain F1” in this small quaint village atop a hill. You will find some traditional garments, local foods and lots of fresh mountain air at Mon Chaem which makes it a must visit in Chiang Mai. Ban Rai Kong Khing is the result of surge in community based tourism in Thailand. As it is encouraged to always support local and traditional cultures, this small charming place welcomes you wholeheartedly. Local women teach the authentic cuisines and of course the highlight would be Yam Khang. All of us must have tried the famous (or infamous) Thai massage once in your life – right? Well,
it’s time to try the traditional Thai “Fire massage” called Yam Khang. This can be experienced in Ban Rai Kong Khing by expert fire masters. They dip their feet in boiling hot sesame oil & water, put it on flaming charcoal to create a big flame and then rub that hot foot on your body. Yes, it can be intimidating at first but you will see it relaxes and rejuvenates you completely. With so much to see in Asia and even in your own backyard, there is no dearth of options for wayfarers and explorers.

Vijay Prakash Singer and composer Vijay Prakash from India has a voice that enthralls his audience with his amazing vocal cord. That is of no surprise as he was born to a family of Carnatic musicians in Mysore, India. Vijay Prakash admits he grew up with a natural ear for music. The catalyst for making him pursue music as a career was when he saw Hindi film numbers on television. His first big break was with AR Rahman’s superhit track “Jai Ho” from the Oscar-award winning film Slumdog Millionaire, where he was one of the lead singers. This chartbuster literally opened up the gates and opportunities started pouring in for the playback singer. Vijay Prakash has been in the music industry for close to two decades now and he is a sought-after name in the world of Indian music. He belted out several hit songs for Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Telugu films including “Kadhal Anukkal” from the Rajinikanthstarrer movie Endhiran, “Sooni” from the Amitabh Bachchanstarrer Cheeni Kum, “Seereli Hudugeena” from the Sudeepstarrer Kannada movie Ranna, and “Beera” from the movie Raavan, to name a few. The singer is no stranger to Malaysia as he has come down to perform in Kuala Lumpur (KL) a few times. He will be down once again 16 | M ALIND OM AG | S EPTEM B ER 2 017

As he is also an avid traveller, he had the luxury of travelling in Malindo air to Kuala Lumpur. “I have to admit that it was a pleasant experience and was totally in awe of the services provided,” says Vijay Prakash. Success has definitely not gone to his head. He is known to be a down to earth person and feels the social media has a huge potential in terms of reaching out to people with one’s creative piece of work. “If you really have a great product it will reach out to the people even with word of mouth but now in this era, social media is a great platform to show your talent and be recognised,” added the singer.

Elephanta Caves From the Gateway of India, you can find yourself on a ferry ride to the majestic Elephanta Caves, a series of natural caves filled with Hindu and Buddhist sculptures. It is a must visit for all history buffs. The caves are a land lost in time and walking into these caves is an enthralling mystery. Dating back to 5th-8th century A.D, these caves have endured centuries worth of turmoil. Getting to the entry of the caves in a toy train is fun for kids and adults alike. One of the most imposing rock form present is the enigmatic Trimurti located in the main cave. As the name suggests ‘Trimurti’ represents the three main gods of Hindu mythology: Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma and the magnanimity will blow you away. The main cave also house a multitude of Shiva’s culture and some of them are truly mesmerising.

Maratha Mandir Mumbai is synonymous with Bollywood: the epicenter of India’s film making industry. So a visit to Mumbai will not be complete without paying a tribute to its cinema. If you are a true Bollywood buff, you would not want to skip this. Maratha Mandir is one of the oldest single screen theatres in the country. This theatre packs together the nostalgia of an era gone by and has one of Shah Rukh Khan’s epic movies Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge on its screens for over 20 years and still running. So get a bucket of popcorn and lose yourself with the dance, music and romance of Bollywood.
Haji Ali Mosque
Haji Ali Mosque Being a port city, Mumbai has been heavily influenced by merchants from all over the world. The believe is that a Uzbek trader left an indelible mark on the city’s skyline in the 15th century. The Haji Ali Mosque was built as homage to Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. The Dargah is built on a small island which is connected to the mainland through a causeway which is only accessible during low tide. Built of glass and situated with a backdrop of the beautiful Arabian Sea, Haji Ali Mosque is a magnificent piece of architectural beauty. The mosque is a brilliant amalgamation of Indo-Islamic architecture. The tomb opens to a huge courtyard and exquisite sliver frames and marble coloumns. The white marble walls are adorned with green and blue glass along with inscriptions from the Quran. You can also find the Haji Ali Juice Centre nearby which is famous for serving fresh juices of every kind. S EPTEM B ER 2 017 | M ALIND OM AG | 19

Girgaum Chowpatty To properly experience the culture of Mumbai, there is no better way than spending an evening at the Girgaum, Chowpatty. A small area facing the Arabian Sea that packs in thousands over the weekend. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, lies the core of Mumbai’s “fast food”. There is a load of butter and a burst of flavours in every bite you take, be it the Vada Pav or the delicious Pav Bhaji. With Mumbai being the financial nerve capital of the country, it draws in crowds from all over the country. Thus the food here is robust, spicy and brings a mixture of flavours from the neighbouring regions. Shanivaarwada Fort
Girgaum Chowpatty
Pune Mumbai’s sister city Pune is situated at a distance of 200km from the city. Although not as buzzing as the capital, the second major city in the state of Maharashtra is filled with throwbacks to the Maratha Kingdom.
Shanivaarwada Fort The strong house of the Maratha Empire, this majestic fort was built in the early 18th century. The fort opens with the Dilli Darwaaza, a monstrous gate of wood and steel. It was large enough to even admit two elephants abreast. Although most of the buildings have been destroyed in a fire, the stone walls hold a magnitude of history that is unparalleled. The erstwhile state rooms were ornately carved and lined with polished marble and Persian rugs. Although most of the Shanivaarwada lies in ruins today, but the sixteen petal Lotus shaped fountain gives you a sneak peek into the royalty of yesteryears. It is said that this fort is one of the haunted palaces in Pune and locals believe that the ghost of Bajirao’s grandson still roams the corridors. Do not miss out on the light and sound show that takes place in three different languages Marathi, Hindi and English. Pictures by Common Wikimedia

Paragliding in Kuala Kubu Bharu The dream of flying in the sky just like a bird is as old as human kind. You can make your dream come true with paragliding. It is a fun, safe way to experience flight in its simplest form. You simply lay out a wing on a hillside or mountain, inflate it over your head like a kite, run a few steps and before you know it you have stepped off into the sky. Once in the air, a pilot is able to maintain and even gain altitude using lifting air currents and thermals. Landing a paraglider is extremely easy. A pilot simply steers it into the landing area, and glides down for a very gentle touch down back on to earth. This adventure is considered to be thrilling and a rush to the adrenaline. The best part is seeing everything in a bird’s eye view. The amazing view will leave you completely mesmerised. In Malaysia, an hour away from the capital city, a place called Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB), in Selangor, is where one can go and try paragliding. KKB has received testimonials from some of the top paragliders in the world
for having the best view and facilities. Three major paragliding competitions were hosted there: Malaysia Accuracy Open, Paragliding Accuracy World Cup and Malaysia Open Cross-Country. To fly tandem, just bring yourself but of course, you would need to wear sneakers as you are required to run during take-off and perhaps, even during landing. So come prepared with sneakers and you are good to fly. If you are in KKB for paragliding, the take-off point is 1400ft above sea level, whereas the landing point is the Stadium Millenium. The meet-up point is at the stadium, where the organisers will ferry participants by 4 Wheel Drive.
“
The best part is seeing everything in a bird’s eye view. The amazing view will leave you completely mesmerised.”
Depending on wind conditions, a paraglider could fly some 100 to 120 km/h up to a height of 4,000 feet. The site in KKB is managed by Local Council in participation by Kelab Luncur Udara KKB (Paragliding Club of Kuala Kubu Bharu) and supported by Tourism Selangor. For more information to book a flight contact Mohd Nazri Sulaiman at 019 219 1144) or Asjanita at 019 204 8123. If you are visiting from other countries, it would be easier to organise the trip to KKB via Facebook group at facebook.com/ groups/kkbparaglidingpark.

Swasana Spa
T
he Swasana Spa at Impiana KLCC Hotel makes a perfect getaway for city-dwellers seeking privacy and serenity and the best part, it is right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur City Centre. The Spa was modeled upon the concept of a spice pavilion created out of a tantalizing three-way Balinese, Thai and Malay combination of traditional healing methods and pampering treatments. In-keeping with its ambience highlighting an exotic and magical allure of the East, each treatment room is named after popular herbs and spices found throughout the Asian region. The spa stimulates the weary senses by offering you restorative and rejuvenating therapies which accentuate your sense of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound while you gently lay back, close your eyes, and thoroughly relax. Skillfully combining and fusing present-day preparations with ancient treatments indigenous to the Eastern region, the spa therapists are there to fully ensure your over-all well-being while they soothingly revitalise your fatigued mind and body. The treatments are specifically designed to invoke a mystical sense of
harmony, inner serenity and deep calm. To this end, they offer a comprehensive range of body massages, body treatments, facials, bath treatments, hand and feet treatments, and other spa packages to cater to the needs of individuals who may require special remedies. Besides the usual treatments, Chill by Swasana Spa centres around reflexology and acupressure. Reflexology is a familiar term to many, and rightly so as this practice has been around for centuries, usually focusing pressures on one’s feet and hands. Acupressure focuses on specific points of the body and through precise finger placements and techniques, relief and recovery is brought about in steady paces.
There are a total of four Chill treatments to choose from: Chill Classic, Chill Out, Ultimate Chill and Holistic Chill. The Holistic Chill treatment is highly recommended for those who are looking for a therapeutic full-body treatment, jet-lagged or about to board a long-haul flight. There is also the Chill Classic option for those looking to fill up their afternoon if lunch is not on their itinerary. The Chill Classic treatment runs for an hour concentrating on the feet, neck and shoulders, perfect for those who have had a very long morning and intend to rejuvenate before the close of a business day. For more information, call Swasana Spa at +603-2147 1089 or e-mail swasanaspa.iklcc@impiana.com.

Resorts World Kijal
t is not easy to find a resort that has everything you could possibly wish for when choosing a sunny holiday destination but the scenic Resorts World Kijal in Malaysia’s East Coast state of Terengganu comes pretty close. The resort not only boasts a 7km stretch of sandy, white beach framing the azure waters of the South China Sea but the jewel of its crown is a beautifully landscaped 18-hole golf course that is bound to challenge the skills of both amateur and professional golfers. With its wide fairways and generous greens, the golf course may look deceptively easy but anyone who has played there will tell you that pitting your skills against Mother Nature is never easy. The sea breeze may be refreshing but it also posed a unique challenge as many golfers discover, much to their chagrin, at the signature 14th hole which is located
next to the beach. Golfing aside, the resort offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Instead, you are transported into an oasis of tranquillity that is bound to rejuvenate and refresh. As the sun sets, take a dip and enjoy fun and frolic at the pool or have a game of beach volleyball or stroll on the beach and work up an appetite for the fresh seafood served at the romantic, beachside Oasis Beach Bistro. The 137-acre resort also offers a variety of cuisine from local favourites at the Restoran Kampong Meraga Beris to tasty coffee shop fare at the Hainan Express. One of the seasonal highlights is the possibility of getting up close to nesting turtles which lay their eggs at the resort’s beach. There is also a nearby turtle sanctuary where you can learn about turtle conservation efforts in the area.
Need a rest after all the excitement? Escape to your rooms where you enjoy modern facilities and the warmth and comfort of home from four categories of rooms — Deluxe, Premier Room - Sea View, Deluxe Suite and Premier Suite. A visit to Resorts World Kijal also enables you to experience the rich East Coast cultural heritage, including visits to nearby scenic fishing villages where you can indulge in some traditional delicacies like “keropok lekor” (fried fish paste), “nasi dagang” (glutinuous rice with fish curry) and “satar” (grilled fish paste). With so much going on but still retaining its East Coast charm, Resorts World Kijal will leave you with memories that last a lifetime.
