Malindo Air Excels On Performance Malindo Air has observed gradual improvement on their flights’ on-time performance (OTP). The Boeing aircraft operations have recorded the highest percentage of the year last September, at 88 percent. On the other hand, the airline’s ATR aircraft operations have also recorded 91 percent OTP in the same month. Chandran Rama Muthy, CEO of Malindo Air said that he is delighted to see the improvement as a result of excellent planning and great team work. In view of that, the airline is introducing an OTP indicator at our landing page (www.malindoaircom) to update the performance monthly. As a premium airline, it is a commitment to stay reliable while meeting the industry standards and providing pleasant customer experience to the passengers. Flight OTP will also directly affect how well the airline can synchronise with the codeshare partners, namely Turkish Airline and Batik Air, as well as other interline partners. This progressive improvement
is seen to boost the confidence of people who wish to embrace the upcoming year-end peak holiday season. Apart from the effort to keep up with the performance at the ground level, Malindo Air will also take a step forward to strengthen on preventive measures to ensure the aircraft are ready as scheduled, as well as improving flight block time to allow sufficient turnaround time for connecting passengers. In the long run, the airline is looking to explore automation using technology to create more value and improve customers’ experience at every
possible touch point - from the moment passengers purchase their tickets till they complete the journey. The airline OTP refers to the level of success, whereby the airline has maintained its timeliness on the published schedule. Malindo Air currently operates more than 800 flights weekly to 57 destinations in 16 countries across the continent of Asia and Australia. On 22 October, the airline will be flying to Kolkata, India - the 8th city for India, from Kuala Lumpur, and a new domestic route between Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

CROSS-COUNTRY JOURNEY Myanmar-Thailand Highway is an all-weather road that weaves through the countries allowing tourist to travel a longer and a more scenic route through the destination. Myanmar has 15,000 miles of roads and half of those are paved – great news for roadtrippers. This makes it much easier to drive from Yangon up to Inle
Lake and Mandalay, then west to the Bagan ruins and south along the Bay of Bengal. The rising pagodas, exotic cuisine and the breathtaking vistas prove Myanmar to be must-see destination on the way to Thailand. Bagan has an array of temples, each one uniquely built and possessing various architectural differences. You can take Balloon trips over the city to fully appreciate the beauty of the monuments. Also, the Sunset in Bagan is a spectacular sight that should not be missed. Mandalay is a bustling and busy centre of Myanmar and is considered a centre of Burmese culture. Mandalay is also considered a popular city because of

the variety of tourist attractions. You can experience typical Burmese life and you cannot help but enjoy the authenticity of the city itself. The Mae Sot (Thailand, Tak Province) / Myawaddy (Myanmar, Kayin State) crossing point is the most practical place to cross for onward travel into Thailand, because of its relative proximity to the main transport network. The greatest draws of North Thailand are found dotted along the snaking mountain roads that connect the cities and towns. From central Chiang Mai look northwest; the enticing silhouette of the nearby Doi Suthep Mountain hints at the countless peaks beyond it. Tourist can also drive to Mae Hong Son loop, a well-known 420-mile tour around the north of Thailand. Samoeng and Mae Wang loops are easily completed as half-day trips from Chiang Mai. But with so many attractions sitting off the main roads, it is worth taking a few days to drive both loops. You will be rewarded with national parks, breathtaking views, and remote, picturesque villages.

Brisbane is one of the most popular “drivethrough” destinations in Australia – which is great as there is lots to see and lots to do within a short radius of the city. Just a couple of hours drive, south of Brisbane you arrive at popular Byron Bay – you might also call it the Hippie City of Australia. Surounded by beautiful beaches, water activities, restaurants and markets this is a must stop for all travellers. Around 90 minutes south of Brisbane is Lamington National Park. FOOD TRAIL It is well-known that Malaysia is a food heaven. Locals will travel far and wide to get their hands on a plate of their favourite food or to fulfill sudden cravings. While most of us are pretty familiar with palate-pleasing cuisines from Ipoh, Malacca and Penang, only a handful of us are well-versed in food from the eastern coast states of Peninsula Malaysia. Take a drive to tantalise your taste buds with the amazing variety of local favourites. Nasi ulam is a steamed rice dish served with various herbs like the leaves of pegagan (centella asiatica) or kemangi (lemon basil), with vegetables and spices and accompanied with several Malay side dishes. For that extra oomph, try Nasi Ulam with Budu, a fermented anchovies sauce with a drop of lime juice, chilli and onions! Get an authentic Nasi Ulam experience, by visiting Nasi Ulam Cikgu Kampung Kraftangan in Kelantan. A road trip to Kelantan from Kuala Lumpur is about four hours by car. Everywhere in Malaysia is connected to a wellmaintained highway and roads. The name of the dish speaks for itself. Maggi Mee instant noodles in a sweet spicy Tom Yam broth with generous amount of prawns and crabs. Make dinner plans at Indra Tomyam Restaurant to try this mouthwatering Kelantan dish. Typically served with various herbs, fried keropok (crackers), pickles and vegetables and often eaten with solok lada (stuffed pepper with grated coconut). Nasi Kerabu is a Malay cuisine with Thai influence. In southern Thailand, this dish is called khāoyam. Visit Yati Ayam Percik to have a go at its Nasi Kerabu and while you are at it, try their legendary Ayam Percik (chicken coated in sauce). Next take a drive to neighbouring state of Terengganu. A short drive of an hour and a half will get you to Kuala Terengganu. A must try dish is
Nasi Dagang. Literally translated to “trading rice”, is yet another Malay-Thai fusion dish. Made of glutinous rice steamed in coconut milk, spicy tuna fish curry, hard-boiled eggs and pickled vegetables, this dish might startle you when you realise that it is meant for breakfast in Terengganu. A good accompanying dish for Nasi Dagang is definitely Gulai Darat. This fish curry dish is made of tuna, salmon or mackerel and a Malay-style curry – from coconut milk mixed with traditional Malay spices such as lemongrass, galangal, chilli paste, and turmeric. A not to be missed is, Terengganu’s Chinese Peranakan cuisine. Several must-try dishes of Terengganu’s Chinese Peranakan food include Kay Bachok (chicken satay wrapped in banana leaves), Kicap Telur (sweet savory omelette) and Kerabu Sotong. If you want to taste the best of the best of Terengganu’s Chinese Peranakan cuisine, the popular Madam Bee’s Kitchen is your go-to place. Besides the mouth-watering dishes, trip to the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia is also scenic with beaches and greeneries along the way. HISTORICAL CRUISE
“Next you have to ride on a “bamboo train,” also called a norry, over a single track constructed in 1927 by the French government in Battambang. ”
Cambodia, heir to the ancient Khmer Empire, is a land of many facets. The temples of Angkor are indisputably the major tourist draw to Cambodia and an absolute must on every traveller’s itinerary. Angkor was once a capital of the Khmer Empire — a powerful state covering what is today Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Southern Vietnam — and with a population of over one million people at its zenith, once the largest city in the world. Its name, meaning “temple city” refers to hundreds of temples in the area, which after the fall of the empire (15th century) fell prey to the jungle. It was only well into the 19th century that naturalists and archaeologists uncovered them again. Of the many temple structures in the Angkor Archaeological Park — UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, including the ingenious system of water reservoirs and

canals — Angkor Wat is the most magnificent and largest of them all. A drive from Phnom Penh to Siam Reap will take you at least six hours or more depending on traffic. The journey offers a glimpse of Cambodian country life, as it barrels past rice paddies, traditional wooden houses, and water buffalo and cows lazily grazing on the side of the road. Be warned that the journey is a bumpy ride as the road are uneven at certain parts of the journey. Next you have to ride on a “bamboo train,” also called a norry, over a single track constructed in 1927 by the French government in Battambang. It is a simple vehicle with a frame of steel and wood, covered with light bamboo slats, equipped with a boat motor and wheels of war tanks left in the field. The unique trains are used to transport people, livestock, rice, bicycles, and bricks. When two trains going in opposite directions meet, the one with the least heavy load is quickly disassembled, so that the other one can pass. A trip from Siam Reap to Battambang takes about two and half hours but it is totally worth it when you arrive there. Packed with history, you should not miss touring mass graves and sites of torture like the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and the Tuol Sieng Prison and the genocide museum in Phnom Penh. There is a lot to learn about the ruthless atrocities of the Khmer Rouge during their rule and the radical ideology of rural utopia and social reforms by communist revolutionary and politician Pol Pot. Tips: Roads journeys takes time as some of the paths are uneven and rocky.

Latiff Mohidin: Pago Pago from the Pago Pago series (1964-68) into a prolific output of literary prose and poetry, yet another understudied aspect of his practice that this exhibition and the accompanying publication has sought to tease out. The exhibition features over 70 artworks and archival materials drawn from leading public and private collections in Singapore and Malaysia. The exhibition is also accompanied by two publications that systematically survey Latiff Mohidin’s contribution to global modernism. They trace his engagements within Berlin art circles of the 1960s and unravel what it meant to operate within avant-garde networks across Southeast Asia.

lham Gallery in collaboration with National Gallery Singapore and the Centre Pompidou will be presenting Latiff Mohidin: Pago Pago (1960 – 1969) starting 12 August till 30 December 2018. Spanning the 1960s, the exhibition traces the artist work from when he began his formal study of art at the Hochschule für Bielende Künste in West Berlin in 1961, to his return to Malaysia in 1964. The years spent in Europe were not just formative in developing a perspective on what the possibilities of art may be, but also allowed the artist to freely explore the breadth of the major literary and painterly currents that dominated debates in Europe and elsewhere. It was in these travels that the emotional states of German Expressionism and his own ancestral imaginary of a rural upbringing in British Malaya began 16 | M ALIND OM AG | N OV EM B ER 2 018
to transform and shift. The outcome was Pago Pago, a way of thinking and working, manifested in a constellation of paintings, sculptures, prints, poetry and writings. This exhibition will explore all sorts of interlocking connections in highlighting what constitutes a contribution to 20th century modernism. In Ilham Gallery, the archival displays are enhanced even further, as more materials have become available since the exhibition opened in Paris earlier this year. The exhibition is designed to unravel the complexities of key works that Latiff Mohidin produced in the sixties, a decade which could be characterized as a moment when Southeast Asia established a locus of participation in the major redraft of Modernism. The exhibition concludes with the 1969 moment of Neo Pago Pago, a critical year in the artist’s practice as he transitioned

The City Of Joy – KOLKATA
By Archana Singh
Kolkata, the 350 years old second largest metropolis of India, manifests itself differently from other metros. Being the former capital of British India, Kolkata still has the bearings of colonial-era in the form of trams and architecture. The city has always been regarded as India’s intellectual, artistic and cultural capital. No wonder it has produced several Nobel Laureates like Rabindranath Tagore, C.V. Raman and Amartaya Sen among others. Friendlier than India’s other metropolises, this is a city you ‘feel’ than simply visit. Whether you are visiting for work or leisure, the city of joy will enthrall you with its laidback character and specialties that you can only get in Kolkata.

The Bengali spiritual leader, Ramakrishna Paramhans, started his remarkable spiritual journey from this important Hindu pilgrimage site, which is dedicated to goddess Kali. The periphery of the temple courtyard has a string of shrines dedicated to Hindu god Shiva.

Belur Math Set amidst palms and manicured lawns in Howrah on the banks of Hooghly River, this large religious centre serves as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. A mission that follows the philosophy of the 19th-century Indian sage Ramakrishna Paramahamsa,
who preached the unity of all religions. And, the same unity is visible in the temple architecture, which is a wonderful blend of Hindu, Christian and Islamic architectural styles symbolizing the unity of all religions. Howrah Bridge The iconic landmark bridge spans through the Hooghly River connecting the two cities of Howrah and Kolkata. This sixthlongest beam bridge in the world is truly a piece of engineering marvel – it does not have nuts and bolts and was created by riveting the whole structure. Mullick Flower Market Near the south-east end of the Howrah bridge a flight of stairs take you to the colourful world of flowers. Kumartuli Idol Maker What Christmas is to Vatican, Durga Puja is to Kolkata. And, the countless clay effigies of deities and demons that are immersed in the Hooghly during Durga Pujas are crafted in special kumar (sculptor) workshops. The narrow lanes lined with workshops on both sides are filled with clay effigies of Maa Kali, and Lord Ganesh and others. It is a place where you can see the idol-making from scratch. Most of the artisans who work here as idol makers have been working for several generations. Victoria Memorial The iconic landmark building of Kolkata is a beautiful mélange of East and West architecture: think US Capitol meets Taj Mahal. The grand marble building was commissioned by Lord Curzon, then Viceroy of India, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s demise in 1901, but it was not completed until 20 years after her death. Marble House This grand mansion is arguably one of India’s best-preserved royal homes and was built by an affluent Mallick family Raja in 1835. Some of the notable exhibits date back two millennia like the 2nd-century-BC Bharhut Gateway, Egyptian mummies, relics from the ancient Indus Valley civilisation of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, dangling whale skeletons and some 37 types of opium in the library-like commercial botany gallery. The museum has 6 different sections – Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany. Tagore’s House Popularly known as the ‘Jorasanko Thakurbari’, the regal 1784 ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore has become a shrine-like museum dedicated to the life and works of the Nobel Laureate. The gallery of the paintings, his quotations,
exhibition on his literary, artistic and philosophical links with Japan gives an insight on his ideologies and philosophies. One thing that you must not miss is his photo with Einstein clicked in 1930 Botanical Gardens Kolkata’s 109-hectare Botanical Gardens provides a great escape from the city’s non-stop sounds and smells. Founded in 1786, the gardens have more than 12,000 plant species. The garden played an important role in cultivating tea bushes smuggled in from China by the British, long before the drink became a household commodity. Today, there are plants collected from all around the world. As the former capital of British India, Kolkata retains a feast of colonial-era architecture and dynamic new-town suburbs. The city is also known for its Bengali cuisine.

Sarawak is made of 48,050 square miles, with 37 National Parks and Nature Reserves. Fourteen of these parks are open to the public, and as many as eight of them allow lodging among the most ancient rainforests in the world, namely Bako, Gunung Gading, Kubah, Lambir Hills, Loagan Bunut, Niah, Similajau National Park and Matang Wildlife Centre. Bako National Park is the oldest national park in Sarawak that was gazetted in 1957 and to this day is still the most visited parks in the state by far. Located on the Muara Tebas peninsula, it takes an hour’s drive and half an hour’s boat ride to reach. Bako is renowned for its beautiful sea stack formations, 17 fun trekking paths and its diverse and readily spot-able wildlife, such as the Proboscis Monkey, Bornean bearded Pig, Slow Loris and cheeky Macaques. One of the longer trails, the Lintang Trail is 5.25km in length and takes about 3 hours to complete ending on a plateau top, where you can see the breathtaking view of the sea all the way to Santubong. Batang Ai National Park is another such park, located on Sarawak’s largest man-made lakes, and has become the haven for Sarawak’s largest wild orangutan populations. To get there, you have to drive five hours from Kuching to the Batang Ai hydro jetty. From there, it is a two to one hour boat ride crossing the lake, and another hour ascending the streams if you going to stay at one of the interior regions of the National Park. You can either stay at the Aiman Batang Ai Resort or stay with the local Iban tribesmen, where you can get a look into the authenticity of their lifestyles, understand

their deep spiritual beliefs regarding the jungle and its inhabitants, swim in the crystal clear streams and maybe spot a few wild orangutan while you are there. Talang Satang National Park is a haven for marine turtles, with four islands providing nesting grounds for green and hawksbill turtles, with water bodies around the islands being used as breeding, nursery and feeding grounds for thousands of other marine species. Due to the sensitive nature of marine turtles and the harsh odds set against them for survival, the number of visitors to these islands are restricted, allowing only short day trips within designated areas only. However, those willing to join the volunteer programme can not only stay longer on these islands, but they can lend a hand in the egg collection and hatchling releases of the sea turtles. Along the northern end of Sarawak lies Mulu National Park, a priceless UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its outstanding beauty of pristine rainforests and sparkling rivers, outlined by towering caves and rock formations are truly a sight to behold. It has the world’s most extensive cave system, jungle trekking, river rapids, and fascinating people, including Sarawak’s last nomadic tribes. Its limestone
“It has the world’s most extensive cave system, jungle trekking, river rapids, and fascinating people, including Sarawak’s last nomadic tribes.” mountain-range is honeycombed with underground caverns and rivers by one of the world’s most extensive cave system. This includes: the world’s largest natural chamber, the Sarawak Chamber; the world’s largest cave passage, Deer Cave, capable of holding London’s St.Paul’s Cathedral; and at 215 km as of 2015, the eighth longest cave in the world, the Clearwater Cave System. At dusk, visitors are thrilled as they watch a black river exodus of two million bats pouring out of the Deer Cave on their nightly forage for insects.
Niah National Park is about two hours from Miri city and is the resting place of the unwritten history of the ancient people of Sarawak. It was inhabited by humans at least 40 millennia ago and became the site of discovery for some of the oldest human remains discovered in Southeast Asia, dating to 40,000 years ago. You will not be the only visitor to this magnificent cave. The nearby Painted Cave also show the wall-paintings of ancient people, depicting the boat journey the dead take into the afterlife, along with the remnants of “Death-ships” on the cave floor. These are boat-shaped coffins, now empty with the contents having been transferred to the Sarawak Museum for preservation. The Great Cave in Niah is home to a thriving swiftlet population, and at sunset visitors can witness two great black clouds intermingling – the nightly ‘changing of the guard’ as hundreds of thousands of swiftlets return to their nests, whilst an approximately equal number of bats fly out to forage in the forest. Anantara Spa in Bali By Sudipto De
A visit to Indonesia is considered incomplete without experiencing the traditional Balinese massage therapy. Every time we plan one, we definitely include a bit of wellness on our itinerary and that is what you should do too. Although the spa is considered an individualistic activity, you can enjoy with your complete family at the Anantara Resort in Seminayak Bali. Located on the 4th floor of the resort, the AnantaraSpa offers an oasis of calm far away from the maddening city crowd. The spa offers an uninterrupted view all the way to the ocean while being nestled amidst palm trees. But before settling down for your spa, you should definitely try out the Indonesian culinary experience. An experience which delights you with the true essence of Indonesia, starts in the small markets that dot the streets of Bali. From there, you collect a plethora of local products which you then later use to cook yourself a delightful little meal after a masterclass with the Executive Chef. The session starts off with a ritualistic foot massage for the whole family using
bath bombs. These explode right under your feet and release a floral scent that envelops the whole room. Right after that, the parents can either experience a traditional Balinese massage or a Seminayak traditional massage while the kids can enjoy a 30-min chocolate bath scrub or a manicure/pedicure. The Balinese massage is an invigorating experience in itself. It starts off with some stretching to eke out the tensed up muscles of the limbs. It is followed by long gliding movements along with skin rolling done with lots of

The spa also offers a delightful menu of organic fresh juices that are perfect for continue the wellness trip going on. There’s also some Yoga and Reiki if you are looking for some alternate
treatments. A visit to this Spa Resort is incomplete without experiencing the deep spirituality that links it to the holistic wellness programmes. A multitude of colourful dance and music festivals will enthrall you and is something that you must experience side by side with the wellness spa therapies.

Top Spot in Kuching Kuching is famous for its’ fresh seafood, boasting varieties of sealife that are unique to the waters of Borneo. While Sarawakians may have many favourite seafood place, one that is known among the locals is Top Spot Seafood, situated in the heart of Kuching city. The best part about this joint, it is not your typical food court as it is situated in a tall building which is easy to spot. The Top Spot can be seen from afar, thanks to its location at the top floor of Kuching Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) building. One can easily notice a giant fluorescent prawn signboard together with the food court’s name, Top Spot. The food court is walking distance from the Waterfront and one can take a stroll along the river before or after dinner. Diners will be greeted with a big crowd and fresh seafood. Customers can choose the seafood to be cooked to their preference. There are also some must-try dishes such as midin, a type of forest fern only found in Sarawak. Another must try dish is the razor clams cooked with curry. Besides this, there are many seafood varieties like crabs, fishes, squid and all kinds of shell fish. As for the drinks, one should try the lemon sugar cane. It is thirst quenching and very refreshing. The stall is situated at the outer part of the food court. Follow the crowd and you will see them making a beeline for this drink stall. Besides selling sugar canes as their signature drink, they also offer delicious coconut shakes. Fashion Entrepreneur Patrick Goi is a man on a mission to make a name for himself in the fashion industry. He started his own brand called Pangoi four years ago after his mother complained she could not find welldesigned, good quality and stylish bags at a decent price. His love for fashion started from young and he turned his passion into a profitable business which he currently runs and manages. He started designing avant-garde handbags and grew his business to add women’s clothing, accessories, shoes and eyewear collection. “When I started the business, it was not easy and there were many challenges but it was the obstacles that made me work even harder,” said Patrick in an interview with MalindoMag. “The Mines Mall shopping center is the first outlet of Pangoi. and carry my own branding. That is when the brand Pangoi was born. The specialty of Pangoi is the avant-garde designs. It is made of high quality leather imported from Turkey. The collection has several types including handbags, clutches, wallets and collections from limited edition of handmade products. From bags he moved into fashion and accessories at customers’ request as they wanted matching garments with their bags. Soon the Pangoi brand featured a trendy collection for women who want exclusive and elegant styles. He quickly grew his business from one store to six concept stores in major shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur. As for the future planning, Patrick want to make Pangoi one of the leading fashion labels in the local market before taking it international. For more information, checkout www.pangoi.com.

B IK IN G , P ERTH
For The Love of Nature & Biking By Devesh Joshi
When it comes to Perth and adventure sports, one thing that comes to most people’s mind is surfing, or something else related to water, perhaps. Well, it would not be wrong to connect Perth with water-sports, but considering that is all that Perth and its surrounding has to offer, is! Because at only two-hour drive towards the south of Perth lies one of Australia’s most impressive and extensive network of Mountain Biking trails. Yes, we are talking about the town of Margaret River. Imagine a massive oak-pine tree forest, some spectacular scenery, perfectly complimented with a labyrinth of mountain biking trails — with a mix of gravel roads and single dirt tracks, suitable for beginner to advanced riders — that’s what Margaret River is, in nutshell. Located amidst the tall timber of the Bramley National Park, Margaret River offers a total natural and exclusive setting for adventure lovers. But it does not mean that Margaret River does not have anything beyond Mountain Biking and adventure. For leisure seekers, Margaret River, as a town, offers a beautiful concoction of a good life and entertainment, with a number of craft breweries and boutique wineries serving people’s need at every corner. Speaking of its original charm of Mountain Biking, however, Margaret River has nearly 500km of trails with different trails offering a different experience. For those who want to cruise, the relatively flat firm surface of the easy and scenic ‘Rails to Trails’ and ‘Ten Mile Brook’ tracks are the perfect fit. But if you’re a die-hard mountain biker, find your nirvana with the epic mountain bike trails like ‘Creek Trails’ that have relentless jumps, berms, logs, rollovers, scrambles, and even mud. Margaret River Region offers a plenty 4 8 | M ALIND OM AG | N OV EM B ER 2 018

of options for bike hire. Many bike hire shops even organize a range of day tours for beginners and advance level bikers everyday. For stay, Wharncliffe Mill Bush Retreat offers a unique natural environment, with many choices of activities to choose from. Gaze at the star-strutted sky, toast marshmallows over the campfire, go for a bushwalk through the beautiful Karri, Jarrah and Marri forests, hit the many mountain biking trails and explore all that the local region has to offer, or simply do nothing and breathe-in the fresh oxygen — no wonder in Margaret River, there’s enough to see and do for an outdoorsy.
