his month m a r k s another significant event for Malaysians as we continue to celebrate a patriotic occasion on September 16, following our Independence Day last month. It is Malaysia Day whereby Sabah and Sarawak (East Malaysia) joined the establishment of the Malaysian Federation. As we advance to the end of the third quarter, we are delighted to introduce two new routes. We now fly to Lake Toba, Silangit in Indonesia from the city airport, Subang Skypak terminal. The main attraction is the beautiful Lake Toba also locally called “Danau Toba”, which is featured in the Voyage segment of this issue. The other new route is to Nanning of China. 8th city in China that we fly to from Malaysia. We have started the flight from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to Nanning on 13th August and from Kuala Lumpur and Penang on 18th of August. With the objectives to support Malaysia Airports to be the transit hub in this region while giving a boost to local economy, I believe these routes will increase passengers’ arrival into the country and subsequently benefit businesses in the travel industry. In our other Voyage segment, we take you to Hong Kong and Taiwan to virtually experience the celebration of the renowned MidAutumn festival with delicacies like moon cake and bright lanterns. It is also one of the most colourful time of the year in those provinces. As we are constantly taking initiatives to improve our services, the latest measures are the
introduction of self check-in kiosks at KLIA and a new payment method option upon booking your flight online. You can now make payment via FPX, which is a secure and more reliable online payment gateway. It connects the website to 14 other Malaysian based banks for online banking. Furnish yourself with more information on these two initiatives in our Insider segment. The cover story takes you on a journey of relaxation and wellness. A pleasurable way to unwind is to go on a holiday retreat and get recharged. Herein, we have thoughtfully highlighted activities that you could indulge in, at several destinations within our growing network. Let me once again take this opportunity to wish all Malaysians, a Happy Malaysia Day and until our next issue, have a pleasant journey with Malindo Air.

Ask the avid traveler or an average diner what makes a memorable restobar and it’s likely they’ll describe something like Knowhere, Bangsar. Located on the fringe of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular nighttime entertainment districts, this otherworldly establishment advocates sustainability and supports the local arts scene. The sky of fairy lights set the tone as you walk in. The eye is then drawn to the keyhole cutouts on the wall. Local artists and muralists use the keyholes as gateways to transport you from Knowhere; our favourite “The Moon & Back” shows an astronaut stepping through to the moon. Once the surroundings sink in, patrons are serenaded by music ranging from cult classics to evergreen melodies. Rare in the industry is a woman who spearheads a restobar. Drawing inspiration from sustainable business practices as championed by institutions like Cambridge (UK), owner and manager, Shalini Surian is passionate about the restobar scene and has strong eco values. She takes pride in local, sustainable and fair trade movements, doing so in a way that gives back to the environment and the community. Answering the call to arms by “Tak Nak Straw” movement to eradicate the use of plastic straws, Shalini works with The Usuk Initiative to offer bamboo straws handmade by villagers in Sabah. Any organic waste from fruits and vegetables are delivered nightly to an urban garden, Kebun-Kebun Bangsar to turn “spoil into soil”. Knowhere is a pork-free kitchen with vegetarian options yet the menu is a traveller’s delight with a selection of sharing platters and global tapas. A must try is the duck confit pizza; shreds of house-smoked duck, scallions, baby tomatoes, on a trifecta of gooey mozzarella, Monty Jack and parmesan cheese atop homemade dough. It’s contrasted by

the Mediterranean-style grilled calamari paired with a sambal belacan salsa. A parched throat may panic at billowing smoke from the bar. Drinks may be smoked or stirred and are heavenly libations with names like Gamora, Smokin’ Luau and Sirap Setan (Devil’s Syrup). Cocktails are served in a myriad of receptacles; from a crystal glass to Tiki-inspired ceramics, forming a juxtaposition with the far less dainty dishes, including Flightless Wings which are a take on buffalo wings, fried and tossed with a tangy chilli-barbeque sauce.
Boasting an extensive range of spirits including internationally acclaimed whisky and gin, imported wines, beers on draft, the show-stopper has to be the selection of cocktails using spirits infused with local produce such as jackfruit, pandan and blue pea flower. Although the names and creations raise eyebrows, the taste leaves no doubt in patrons minds that there is Knowhere better for a taste of the world in a Malaysian context.

Indian Musician
Sean Roldan
Sean Roldan, also known as R. Raghavendra, is an Indian professional carnatic classical musician, who loves blues and country music when he was growing up. He started developing an original style in song writing and guitar playing with a blend of Indian folk, American country blues, acoustic funk and classical melody influences. He got into entertainment industry after getting some success from his band Sean Roldan and friends which is the first Tamil independent music band in Chennai, India. The group had a completely new approach to sound and artistic expression, blending the south Asian and western ideas in the craziest possible fashion. Sean rose to fame after gaining critical acclaim for his work in Balaji Mohan’s Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, Samsaaram Aarogyathinu Haanikaram in 2014. “I want to take native Indian music form and represent them worldwide by mixing them with other styles. Next on my plan is to make musical plays in Tamil soon, said Sean in an 16 | M ALIND OM AG | S EPTEM B ER 2 018
interview with MalindoMag. “There are lots of potential for music in India. Core arts will also have a big part to play apart from the mainstream space. My dream is to see Indian musicians stretch the boundaries of known, without aping the west and creating original styles. Sean has had a fair share of struggles before getting famous. When any musician enters the film industry, he goes through a certain amount of struggle to make it in the industry and he believes all that has taught him to be a better musician. He is currently working on “mehendi circus” directed by Saravanan Rajendran. Sean Roldan will be in Kuala Lumpur for the Malaysian Independent Live Fusion Festival 2018. Happening on September 8 at StarXpo Centre, the line-up includes contemporary singer Benny Dayal, jazz songstress Andrea Jeremiah and veena extraordinaire Rajhesh Vaidhya. Tranquil Located four hours from Sumatra’s main city of Medan lies the mystical volcanic crater lake, Lake Toba. An 1800 square km, 500-meter deep lake surrounded by lush green mountains with an island in the middle the same size as Singapore. Toba has been described in superlative terms — it is the largest volcanic lake in the world, created by an eruption that spewed enough lava, reportedly to create two Mount Everest’s — and has such a storied past of having been the hub of backpackers. Situated 900 meters above sea level the climate is pleasant with lush and tropical vegetation. Local farmers of the Batak people use the perfect conditions to grow coffee, cocoa, vanilla, pineapple, avocadoes, candlenuts, and plenty of vegetables and other fruits. There is no denying the beauty of this place and since the early 70s, Samosir Island in the middle of Lake Toba’s fresh waters is the main destination for travellers. Most guesthouses are situated in the town of Tuk-Tuk on Samosir. The area boasts water-front restaurants and guesthouses where you can relax in a deckchair while enjoying the remarkable scenery on offer. Sure, it is a great place just to while away some time by the water, take a dip when it gets too hot, read a book, or unwind with some delicious local cuisine. But if that is all you do, you are missing out.
Experience Batak culture The local Batak people who inhabit Lake Toba are some of the friendliest and most welcoming you will meet on your travels, so do not be surprised if you are randomly invited to a wedding 18 | M ALIND OM AG | S EPTEM B ER 2 018

The local Batak people who inhabit Lake Toba are some of the friendliest and most welcoming you will meet on your travels or someone’s house for dinner. Located a 10-minute drive from TukTuk is the village of Ambarita. It is here that you can visit a traditional ancient Batak village and see the stone chairs where the local king would hold meetings. Your local guide will also happily play the executioner role as you get a photo on the “chopping block”, where, as the name suggests, executions were held. Traditional Batak dance performances take place twice a day
at the Batak Museum in Simanindo. Some guesthouses and restaurants in Tuk-Tuk also put on performances at night. The tor-tor, choreographed to express different meanings and emotions, is best seen during a Batak wedding ceremony, where the bride and groom must dance it as a matter of course. The native Batak dance called the sigale-gale uses life-size puppets carved from local banyan trees. The mannequins, dressed in traditional Batak garb, dance to a

chorus of flutes and drums. The Kain Harum market in Tomok is Samosir’s hot spot for local fabrics and handicrafts. The Batak are skilled weavers, and their handiwork can be bought by the meter. The ulos cloth is their homegrown product, a fabric with patterns that tell tales. Thus, no traditional ceremony is complete without attendees wearing an ulos. Tip: Hiring a Batak guide inside Ambarita is both entertaining and well worth the price for learning about the cannibal rituals and Batak culture.
Explore the island by motorbike Without a doubt, the best way to experience Lake Toba is via a motorbike. A popular day trip is riding from Tuk-Tuk across to the hot springs located just outside of Panguruan on the other side of the island. If you are a skilled rider you can ride to the source of the hot springs at the top of the mountain. This is also the best spot for a view of Lake Toba, be sure to bring your camera. Tip: Many hilltops house cafés serving piping hot coffee and the Indonesian staple, Indomie noodles.
Visit a lake inside a lake Lake Toba is home to one of the world’s only lakes inside a lake, called Lake Sidihoni. However, getting there can get quite difficult. To avoid getting lost, it is best to ask your guesthouse for a guide to take you. You must brave the rough trail between Ronggumihuta and Partungkoan on motorbike, then hike the slightly obscure path. Tip: If lost, try asking someone “Di mana Danau Sidihoni?” (Where is Sidihoni Lake?)

Sipiso-piso is the tallest waterfall in Indonesia at 120 meters. It is located 35km away from Kabanjahe, in a small village called Tongging. The view of the waterfall is best enjoyed from the bottom. The cascade is formed by a small underground river of the Karo Plateau and flows out into the Lake Toba caldera. It is set 800 meters above sea level and surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Karo Highlands. Tip: The walking trails towards the base of the waterfall are steep and winding, so make sure you have enough drinking water and a good pair of shoes on.
Get there during a festival Lake Toba has evolved from its hippie full moon parties to world class music and culture festivals. The annual Lake Toba Festival is an event featuring local arts and culture enthusiasts. This week-long festival features Batak cultural performances, with canoe races being the highlight. Another annual event is the Samosir Music International Festival. A special music festival which forms part of the Horas Samosir Fiesta Program, it features exceptional collaborations among international and Indonesian top musicians. What makes this
festival unique is that each musician performs a traditional Batak song and plays a Batak traditional music instrument. It is the county’s initiative to elevate the habatakon (Batak culture) and further spread it to the world. Tip: Although visiting Samosir during a festival is highly recommended, the island’s cultural offerings and panoramic enjoyment are more significant. Stay a day or two longer to take it all in. Today, getting to Lake Toba has become a lot easier, cutting short the former long overland journey from the Kuala Namu International airport of Medan. Direct flights are available from Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur to the newly modernized and expanded Silangit International Airport at Lake Toba Region.

Did You Know? Flying is greener than you think. Although planes might seem like flying emissions factories, global air travel accounts for just 2% of humans’ annual CO2 emissions.
In the early years of commercial flight, before pressurized cabins were invented, airline passengers sometimes had to wear oxygen masks during routine flights.
The world’s busiest commercial airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL) in Atlanta, with 970,000 airplane movements a year. It is followed by Chicago (ORD), London (LHR), Tokyo (HND), Los Angeles (LAX).

Mid-Autumn Festivity By Emily Lowe
One of the most significant festivals in the Chinese lunar calendar is Mid-Autumn Festival. To give thanks to a bountiful autumn harvest, it is observed on September 24 this year, or annually on the 15th day of the 8th moon according to the lunar calendar. Celebrated by Chinese people around the world due to China’s cultural influence, the way in which it is observed may differ from country to country. However, there are quite a few similarities. To many Chinese, Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, is also a time to gather with family. Featured prominently at the reunion dinner are mooncakes, a traditional delicacy. After a hearty meal, the family adjourns to the garden to chit-chat as they gaze at the big, round moon, said to be at its brightest and fullest. It is autumnal equinox, after all! Picture from timedotcom.files.wordpress.com
Mid-Autumn in Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival is a major celebration in Hong Kong, similar to other countries with a predominately Chinese population. To tourists, this time of the year is one of the most colourful to visit Hong Kong, as lantern displays, including thematic lanterns, and exhibitions run throughout the month in many parts of the territory. The main highlight and grandest celebration is the Mid-Autumn Urban Carnival at Victoria Park on September 24, an all-event under one roof with 24 | M ALIND OM AG | S EPTEM B ER 2 018
a full cultural programme. Expect to witness, among others, energetic kung fu demonstration, melodious folk song and lively cultural dance performances, as well as traditional craft workshops. Keeping tradition alive Of all the activities, not to be missed is the Fire Dragon Dance by Tai Hang community, a fiery ancient ritual that is over a hundred years old. It all began over a century ago when the Tai Hang village was afflicted by a series of
calamities, beginning with a typhoon, a plague and then a python attack on livestock. To put a stop to this run of bad luck, a fire dragon dance was performed for three days and nights, amidst the loud beating of drums and crackling of fireworks.

Gigantic dragon Today, Tai Hang in Causeway Bay is no longer a village but its dragon dance ritual lives on. On the eve of Mid-Autumn Festival, rituals are performed at Lin Fa Temple before the dragon weaves its way through Tai Hang over three days. The dance involves 300 performers to hoist the 67-metre long dragon, whose head alone weighs a massive 48 kg. It is a sight to behold. Neighbouring Taiwan Over in Taiwan, to the east of Hong Kong across the South China Sea, Moon Festival, as it is more commonly known here, is also celebrated with similar enthusiasm, albeit in a less colourful manner. After all, unlike Hong Kong, one is hard pressed to look for lantern displays and carnivals during this season. Do not worry though, if you do find yourself visiting Taiwan during Moon Festival, there are still plenty of memorable moments to take home. Barbecue parties A fairly recent Moon Festival custom in Taiwan is the hosting of barbecue
parties in the moonlight, all the better to enjoy the moon at its brightest with loved ones and even strangers, complemented by mooncakes, pomelos and tea, an integral part of the festivity. All across Taiwan, BBQ grills are set up just about anywhere outdoors, not only in the backyard, on the sidewalks, along riverside parks or campsites. Coming out in droves as early as 3pm, the sky is soon filled with smoke and autumn breeze, with the sweet aroma of BBQ. Moon gazing While in Taiwan during Moon Festival, remember to stake out the best spots for the most picturesque views of the full moon. With the cooperation of Mother Nature by granting us fine weather, one of the world’s tallest buildings, Taipei 101, is a good bet to catch the full moon. Other landmarks around Taipei that also offer clear, unobstructed views of the moon include Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf, Daan Forest Park, and Yangmingshan National Park. Not in Taipei? Recommended viewing points around the island are Alishan in Chiayi County, Xizi Bay in Kaohsiung, Nanwan in Pingtung

County, Dongshan River Water Park in Yilan County, Wuling Farm in Taichung, and Anping Distrcit in Tainan. So, plan your destination during Mid-Autumn Festival and catch all these activities to get the most out of your visit.

Guganesan:
Humanitarian Activist Educational, Welfare & Research Foundation (EWRF) CEO, Guganesan has more than 20 years of experience working in various capacity in youth development, harm reduction programmes for people who inject drugs, marginalised population and community development. His passion for community development goes back to his secondary school days. Growing up in Ladang Tun Dr Ismail in Johor, the nearest school was approximately 30km away and tuition centres were in Kluang which was almost 50km away. Concerned with his studies, his parents sent him to stay in a hostel ran by EWRF which provided the tuition and guidance needed for him to excel in studies and inculcated the passion for serving others which is still going strong. Presence of volunteers and mentors left a long-lasting impression on him to pursue career in this field. Untill today, Guganesan feels that working with these children recharges the “internal battery” that keeps him going. After 15 years working in various civil society organisations, Guganesan returned to the organisation where it all started – EWRF. Being a beneficiary of EWRF, he felt his experience and skills could be put into further enhancing the EWRF’s vision and mission of upgrading the Indian community in Malaysia. Set up in 1978, EWRF has been responding to the community’s needs and over the years, more than 100,000 students and their families have benefitted from their nationwide programs. Since the almost four decades of existence, EWRF have tried the utmost best to uplift the quality of life among marginalised Indians in the country by providing educational, moral and financial support to the needy. However, it is a constant struggle to find funding and volunteers to expand our reach out and ensure the deserving students are empowered. EWRF firmly believes that with the support from the community, we can reach out and make a difference in their lives. For more information visit www.ewrf.org.my or call 0377100142. O F IL LUSIO N S
Asia’s First
MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS in Kuala Lumpur
The world’s fastest growing museum chain has opened its doors in Malaysia the first Museum of Illusions in Asia. Kuala Lumpur is the seventh Museum of Illusions since the maiden attraction originated in the land of famous international inventor Nikola Tesla, in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2015. It has since expanded to five other locations worldwide – Belgrade (Serbia), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Muscat (Oman), Vienna (Austria) and Zadar (Croatia). The museum boasts the largest single collection of optical illusions in Asia and tantalizes visitors to a visual and sensory experience that transcends generations. However, unlike most museums, where a certain mature decorum is expected when admiring exhibits, the Museum of Illusions welcomes a bit of noise and banter – particularly laughing and bewildered exclamations. With over 70 exhibits, the Museum of Illusions has the largest collection of holograms, stereograms, and optical
illusions across Asia. Each of these exhibits have been designed to not only thrill and beguile visitors, but to provide a unique opportunity from which to learn just how easily a person’s mind can be tricked. The Museum of Illusions showcases entertaining and mind-bending illusions, each of which teaches about vision, perception, the human brain, and science, allowing visitors to understand why their eyes may see things that the brain does not understand. Illusions vary from a gravity-defying slanted room to visual illusions where the person shrinks or grows before their very eyes. You can engulf yourself in a dark and disorienting vortex or sit at a table with multiple you for a hand of poker. There is also a gift shop that offers mind-twisting puzzles, as well as souvenirs and games suitable for all ages. It is a place to revel in a host of illusions and discover the clever shortcuts our senses take in making sense of reality. The ‘Museum of Illusions’ is located on the 1st and 2nd floor of the newly expanded zone of Ansa Hotel, 101 Jalan Bukit Bintang, in Kuala Lumpur. Doors are open daily from 10am to 10pm and entrance fees are priced at RM35 for adults and RM25 for children below 15. For more information please visit http:// www.museumofillusions.my/ or call 03-21102654.
Malindo Air passengers are entitled up to 20% savings on Museum of Illusions entry when the boarding pass or Malindo Miles membership card is presented. 4 8 | M ALIND OM AG | S EPTEM B ER 2 018
