Lets look at Sindy the Air Hostess

Sindy the Horse Rider, nurse, or ballerina may easily come to mind when you think of Sindy careers But, did you know Sindy had her fair share of air hostess or cabin crew roles too? Sindy first took to the skies in 1966, looking very smart in her BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) uniform

Her next official flight would not be until 1991 when Hasbro introduced an air hostess outfit as part of their career 'options' series They updated it in 1993 before dropping the range Over ten years later in 2002 Vivid Imaginations launched a Sindy in a replica of the iconic red Virgin Atlantic uniform She was carefully designed and developed to ensure her uniform, hair and appearance emanated

the smart style and well-groomed appearance of the VA Cabin Crew She also came with a red and white trimmed bikini for when she was off-duty She was sold in Woolworths for £799 and in the Virgin Atlantic's inflight catalogue for £750

Sindy would fly again a year later in 2003 with British Airways Her outfit was a replica of fashion designer Paul Costello's uniform, first introduced in 1993 A limited edition of 10,000 boxed dolls were produced by Vivid Imaginations The same year New Moons produced their own British Airways Sindy who wore the new cabin crew uniform designed by Julien McDonald She was an in-flight exclusive and cost £10

The KLM - the Royal Dutch Airlines - Sindy doll was available from 1980-1982 Dressed in an authentic and detailed replica uniform worn by the KLM stewardesses between 1975 and 1981 This doll was sold on board International KLM flights only At the same time the Otto Simon Company sold a Fleur doll wearing the same uniform

In 2007 Pedigree collaborated with British Airways on a retro range of four boxed Sindy dolls, to showcase the BA cabin crew uniforms from the 1950s to the 1970s The 1950s dolls wear the BEA (as it was then known) uniform, the 1960s featured two styles of dolls, one wears a replica of the floral shift dress worn by BOAC hostesses in 1967 (for flights between New York and the Caribbean), while the other shows the more traditional uniform of the era The 1970s doll wears the BEA uniform worn just before the merger of BEA and BOAC, forming the BA of today

These dolls were available as either a blonde or brunette Sindy and originally retailed for £12 each

Sindy's final flight was in 2008 when she was issued in the new Monarch Airways (which collapsed in 2017) cabin crew uniform She came with a small pull-along case and hair slides for the buyer This

THE MARTINAIR SINDY

Dutch airline Martinair, a subsidiary of Air France–KLM, was founded in 1958 They sold a Sindy stewardess doll in the 1970's provided by the Otto Simon Company (who issued Sindy in the Netherlands under license from Pedigree - before branching out alone and launching Fleur)

There are two versions of the uniformone circa 1974 that has a grey felt dress red jacket and hat teamed with a red white and black stripe scarf The second uniform circa 1975 was updated and includes a red felt dress grey jacket red hat and a distinctive red and white logo printed satin scarf

Cathy doll, I have the most wonderful proposal!

IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE! Ooh, Bonita look at this!

set about designing the fabric for the collection She spoke to the team at Pedigree and Kid Kreations for permission to use the vintage and modern illustrations As some were by the famed doll designer R G S She then placed a fabric order and hoped she has ordered enough! Cathy had reassured her that it was enough for the dress patterns she had designed They anxiously awaited the delivery

Bonita, the Editor-In-Chief of Mam'selle magazine was chatting with her friend, Cathy, the Head Designer at Jolly Dolly Shop

Cathy set about getting some designs down on paper She started sketching ooh she has so many ideas

Cathy couldn't hear her The whirring of the Singer was so loud. And, these designs weren't going to make themselves How many hair wraps was that now?

I must remember to pop to the Sindy Leather Goods Store in the Village

It was all starting to come together beautifully Cathy was so right about using the Pedigree 1963 colour illustrations for a Tea Dress with a matching hair wrap, and the modern Kid Creations illustrations for a Shift and headscarf They were both certain doll designer R G S would be pleased with the final result! Bonita's styling background came in handy when she suggested a pink belt to finish off the Tea Dress

"Oh Gayle you were 'made' to wear this dress! No wonder you are the highest paid supermodel in Sindy Land Hold still I've nearly got it!"

Sweetie! Do I get a model discount? This fits me so perfectly

Cathy checked the seams and final details She was a perfectionist That's why her Jolly Dolly Shop has a waiting list
