SINDY TOWN Follow Mam’selle Editor Penelope’s visit

Sindy in the untry o c

Mam’selle Editor Penelope is going on a little adventure - and taking you, lovely readers, with her! Travelling by Sindy Rail, she is catching up on the last of her work emails, while speeding through the city into the lush countryside of Sindy Town.

There she is, Jake.

As the train pulls into the station, Penelope looks out of the window and waves as she sees SindySue, her host, waiting on the platform.

Storyboard, images and copy all by Sue @sewist53

The friends have a big hug, as Jake puts the luggage into the van. SindySue climbs into the passenger seat once Penelope is settled in the back.

Everyone happy? Shall we go?

YES!!!!!!

YES!!!!!!

As they draw up outside the holiday cottage, SindySue gets out of the van to help Penelope with her luggage, while she thanks Jake for the lift.

‘Thanks so much for the beautiful flowers, Penelope. Now, here are your keys. I’ll leave you to get settled in. There’s food in the cupboards and if you need anything, just ring me. I’ll call for you at 9.30 tomorrow morning.’

Penelope quickly makes herself at home. After a light supper and cup of tea, she slowly unpacks her suitcase, making use of the gown rail. She takes a hot shower, fills in her journal, then snuggles down into the cosy candy-striped sheets and soon falls fast asleep.

the following morning Just coming...

See you soon, Barbara.

The next day there is a knock at the cottage door. Penelope grabs her keys and bag, and heads out to meet SindySue. Today she is visiting Barbara, who owns Barbara’s Books, in the heart of Sindy Town for a special Sindy Souvenir Issue signing.

Fresh bread, farmhouse butter, and what a delicious selection of cheese and biscuits. Ooh and a nice, chilled bottle of white wine. Jake and SindySue certainly know how to look after me! I must thank them in the morning.

SindySue arrives to collect Penelope. As she gets ready to leave, she kisses Barbara and tells her she’s had the most wonderful day and thanks her for her hospitality. Once back at the cottage, Penelope kicks off her shoes and shrugs out of her coat.

You can see what happened at the Sindy book signing in a future issue of Mam’selle.

the next day Penelope is enjoying a lovely, lazy start to her Sunday, with the sun shining through the window, when her phone rings. It’s her host, SindySue, who tells her she will be there in half an hour and to dress warm, as it’s breezy in the country today.

Morning SindySue... Oh no, I’ve not had breakfast yet. I’m starting slow this morning!

The friends tramp happily through the woods and parkland, kicking up leaves and enjoying the fresh air as they take the long way ‘round to Deliciously Sindy. The town cafe is warm and cosy, and they get comfortable in some seats by the window. Russel greets them with a smile and a menu.

Russel, this is Penelope. She’s the Editor at Mam’selle magazine and is staying in Sindy Town this week.

MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE | 34

How nice to meet you. I believe you’re coming to see Clive and myself about a feature on making coffee at home later this week.

’Right,’ says Russel, ‘what can I get you today?’ ‘Well, I know what I’m having,’ says SindySue, indicating the first option on the menu to Penelope. Her friend raises her eyebrows slightly, but then her tummy rumbles and she grins at Russel. ‘Make that two,’ she says. ’Two large full English breakfasts coming up,’ says Russel, putting down the plates, followed by a pot of extra coffee and the tomato sauce. ‘Have you got everything you need?’ ’Oh, yes!’ says Penelope with a laugh, ’I think we’re set for the day!’

You can see the pictures from the coffee tasting session in the next issue of Mam’selle.

Penelope’s due in ten minutes! I better get sorted.

SindySue had booked Penelope in for a day of treats. At The Sindy Spa, soft meditation-like music plays quietly as the girls check her in. ‘The room smells divine’ thinks Penelope, as she enjoys the warm water filling the small bath for her invigorating lower leg treatment. This is followed by a relaxing facial. Bliss.

Monday morning The Spa Sindys are having their morning coffee and anticipating a very important client! Pink haired Sindy consults her appointment screen...

the following evening

SindySue has been working all afternoon to prepare a delicious meal for her friends, Penelope and Baking Sindy. It’s been so wonderful to have Penelope in Sindy Town and she feels this is a lovely way to spend their last evening together. She shows them to the table and wheels the hostess trolley closer.

I’ve had such a lovely time, and I have been totally spoilt. Thank you so much.

The friends tuck into their delicious roast dinner. After the plates are cleared away, SindySue brings out a huge sherry trifle. ‘I love trifle,’ says Baking Sindy, ‘especially when I don’t have to make it myself!’ The friends laugh. ‘I can smell the sherry from here,’ says Penelope. They end the meal with coffee and chocolates. ’I don’t know if I can manage cheese and biscuits,’ says Penelope, ‘but I can always eat a chocolate!’ SindySue laughs, reaching for one herself.

Penelope had spent the day at The Baking Sindy studios, and you can see this storyline in the next issue of Mam’selle.

Helloooooo...

Penelope’s final day On Penelope’s final day in Sindy Town there is some enthusiastic knocking at the cottage door. ‘Hang on, I’m coming!’ replies Penelope, shutting down her laptop. She opens the door to the cottage. ‘Hello, darlings,’ she says, ‘you caught me. I’m still in my pyjamas!’ The Sindys laugh as they bundle inside. ’Well, good thing we brought breakfast,’ says long haired Sindy.

‘Have I got time to shower and dress?’ asks Penelope. ‘You go ahead,’ she replies, ’we’ll get everything sorted.’ She pops the coffee pot on the stove. ’Ready when you are,’ calls Sindy to her friend, taking a seat at the table which is filled with delicious, warm, fresh croissants, honey and rich, dark coffee. Thank you so much for this,’ says Penelope, taking her seat with a smile.

’What time is SindySue collecting you?’ asks Sindy, helping herself to a croissant. ’About three o’clock,’ says Penelope, ‘I’m nearly packed and ready.’ After breakfast the friends hug goodbye. ‘You sure you don’t want us to stay and help with the washing up?’ says long haired Sindy. ‘No!’ says Penelope with a laugh, ‘it’ll give me something to do while I’m waiting.’…

Penelope waves them off at the door. ‘See you on the 1st December at the Mam’selle Christmas party,’ she calls out. Penelope smiles to herself as she dries the dishes. ‘Why is washing up so much more fun when you are on holiday?’ she thinks.

SindySue has booked Penelope on a first class air ticket back to the city and Mam’selle HQ. She is kindly driving her to the airport just outside of Sindy Town.

SindySue arrives at the cottage in her mini. They lock the door and pop Penelope’s case into the boot.

Once in the car, SindySue turns to her friend. ‘Got everything?’ she asks. ‘Yes,’ says Penelope, ‘I checked, thank you.’ The local airport is busy and the girls hug goodbye so that Penelope can get in the queue. ‘You will come to the Mam’selle Christmas party on the 1st December, won’t you?’ she says to her friend, hugging her tight. ‘Of course, darling. I wouldn’t miss it for the world!’ says SindySue with a last kiss on her cheek… 42 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE

Penelope checks in and boards the aeroplane. She puts her new jacket into the overhead locker and straps in ready for take off. The pilot taxis them along the runway and they are quickly in the air. ’Good evening, Ms. Penelope and welcome to Air Sindy,’ says the flight attendant as the seat belt sign goes off. ‘Can I get you a glass of champagne?’ ‘Yes, please,’ says Penelope, with a smile.

I could get used to this!

’Oooh,’ says Penelope, munching the Kettle crisps. The Air Sindy attendant nods and pours her a glass of chilled bubbles. Penelope reclines her seat slightly and looks out of the window as the fields of Sindy Town get smaller and smaller. What a wonderful week it’s been.

Extra special thanks to Sue for taking care of Penelope - and creating these wonderful stories that I’m thrilled to share over the next couple of issues. Sue is absolutely one of a kind - and a very special Sindy friend to me. Thanks again Sue and Alan for hosting Penelope in Norfolk.

SKI

A post-festive trip is good for the soul. Sindy loves to ski, as we discovered in 1965 with the launch of her Winter Holiday outfit. In 1971 her bright yellow Winter Sports ski suit ensured she stood out from the crowd. Ski resorts in January and February offer a good solid snow base and fresh snowfall ideal for skiing, snowboarding and sledging. Plus, who doesn’t love Après-ski time?

MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE | 31

STEP ONE: Drink 4 pints of milk and wash out the bottle. You may need a friend to help. Coffee, anyone? STEP TWO: Draw on the bottle with a pen to mark out a wood burner shape. Cut out along with the end of the handle (you can neaten edges later so don’t worry too much at this stage). STEP THREE: Make a door out of some stiff card, or if you hoard craft stuff ‘just in case’ you may just have some dolls house windows in your supply. This one is from HobbyCraft.

STEP FIVE: Get a large box of matches and annoy your partner by nicking the tray! Poke a good size hole in it to feed through the fairy lights. STEP SIX: Button battery lights are cheap and easy to hide. Thread them through, and curl them around the bottom of the tray. Wire lights can easily be manipulated into shape. STEP SEVEN: Tape the matchbox tray onto the back of the wood burner. STEP EIGHT: Chop a stick into mini logs - I used secateurs for nice chopped looking edges. Pop them in the front of the burner, on top of the lights. I also glued a couple on the hearth, for later use.

STEP FOUR (a): Cut out a hole for the wood burner door, slightly smaller than the window set. Also, cut out a square of cardboard for the hearth. Glue both onto the bottle. STEP FOUR (b): Spray the whole thing black. Allow to dry for at least 24 hrs.

tip

Store carefully as the plastic is flimsy and the spray paint can flake if you are not careful.

YOU WILL NEED: 4-pint milk bottle Dolls house window or stiff card Glue and tape PlastiKote Twist & Spray Paint Tray from Cook’s match box Mini fairy lights Small twigs, or dolls house logs
