SINDY FASHION HISTORY
MIX ‘N’ MATCH Mam’selle takes a look at the fashionable coordinating mix ‘n’ match Sindy fashions from the late 1970s onwards...
How it started... 1976
First introduced in 1976, Mix ‘n’ Match was a boxed fashion set. It included a printed jacket, top, skirt, trousers and beaded necklace in a red, white and navy combo. The only real ‘mixing and matching’ element was being able to switch from a skirt to trousers. But, that all changed the following year!

Be inspired...
In 1977, Sindy Mix ‘n’ Match offered eight small packs of completely new fashions, accessories and shoes that could be coordinated (or mixed and matched) to create over 80 new looks. With three base colours (in this case cornflower blue, buttercup yellow and rose pink), a pretty white floral spray print and some slogan tees - which were all the rage at the time this set looks as fresh and modern today as it was in the late seventies.

Nautical chic...
Always in style, a classic mix of red, white and blue did not pass Sindy by. Her new mix ‘n‘ match packs for 1978 saw these nautical hues mixed with some bold deckchair stripes. The Sindy heart logo made an appearance this year in the collection. The previous year’s onpack promotion continued into 1978. Just by purchasing three packs (from mix ‘n‘ match) you could send away for a child-sized logo t-shirt to match with your favourite doll.
@sindytude
* There is also a floral blouse (shown here) that was sold as mix and match but not shown in the 1978 brochure image (as above left)

A new year, and a further eight packs of one or two items of clothing or accessories sets that perfectly mixed together appeared. 1979 saw the popular combination of chocolate brown and golden yellow, here mixed with crisp white. Probably the most retro of the sets, this darker combo was softened with some bold stripes, gingham trims, floral embroidery and, of course, another on-trend printed tee.

Fresh looks...
The beginning of the eighties saw yet another mix ‘n’ match set, this time in bottle green, mixed with fresh white separates, and a crisp apple green checked style print. The sets followed a similar vein to previous years, including a variety of cotton trousers, A-line skirts, a ‘sloppy joe’ style sweater, logo tops, a short sleeved blouse, a light jacket or anorak style blouson, and a scarf. Have you made 84 different outfits yet?

@sindy_dreaming
The early eighties saw the last of the mix ‘n’ match packs to be released. A classy mix of navy blue, bright turquoise and white. The 1970s wider style A-line skirts were updated with a slimmer fitting skirt - a prelude to the pencil skirts of the decade of power dressing perhaps? This set was definitely much smarter, with two jacket shapes and no prints, although the striped towelling hoodie harks back to the casual styles of previous years.

Welcome to the final part of Penelope’s visit to Sindy Town, where she was hosted by Sindy Sue. This month we are sharing images from the Mam’selle Sindy Souvenir Issue signing. Part of the reason for her visit - besides Sindy Sue guest editing last month’s issue was this special trip to Barbara’s Books.
Welcome Penelope, it’s so lovely to finally meet you! I’ve put you over here.
Barbara! It’s wonderful to be here. The bookshop looks so inviting.
MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE | 19
‘That looks great,’ says Penelope with a smile and settles herself at the table Barbara has set up for her with copies of the ‘Sindy at Sixty’ book and a stack of pens. This is going to be so much fun, thought Penelope, and is so thrilled to see the newest issue of Mam’selle, as well as plenty of back issues on the shelves. . At 10am, Barbara opens the door to a queue!
First up is Sindy with her baby Billy in his sling. The baby smiles and gurgles as Penelope signs his mum’s book, laughing. He may just be the cutest baby I have ever seen, thinks Penelope.
Storyboard, images and copy all by Sue @sewist53
Chic is next and gives Penelope a big hug! As one of Mam’selle’s cover stars, they have a bit of a catch up too, whilst Penelope signs her book.
Awwww, Chic so lovely to see you again.

Penelope is so overwhelmed, as the lovely doll community just keeps on coming through the door. ’Oooo, great shirt dress,’ says Penelope when she spots Masquerade Sindy. She explains that she bought it for Paul, but couldn’t bear to part with it!
SINDY SUE COLLECTION
Phew! It’s getting warm in the shop with so many people. Penelope takes off her jacket, just as Jake arrives with a much appreciated cup of coffee from the cafe.
Shopper tells her how much she LOVES Veronique’s column in Mam’selle every month, and Gaunty talks about the online shopping opportunities she discovers as she’s reading her magazine. Finally, Tammy is delighted to meet Penelope and tells her she loves the society pages in Mam’selle, especially when the Sindys are dressed in all their finery.
At the end of the afternoon and on her second coffee, Penelope notices there are only two copies of the book left. You can see where they all went on the pages overleaf...

“The Sindy at Sixty: Sindy Souvenir Special Issue came about as I really wanted a place to celebrate her sixtieth. It has been truly overwhelming how you have all embraced this ‘supplement that totally outgrew itself!’I’ve also loved seeing your pictures, reading your captions, and have received some wonderful messages. THANK YOU always, Sindy friends you really are the best!” @dresslikeasindy
What can I say about it...it’s beautiful! All the pictures are stunning and my gorgeous Wendy Weekender is over the moon her photo was chosen to be in it. She’s not shut up about it in the Sindy house. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Bonita. It is an absolute honour to have been part of this wonderful keepsake to treasure. SARAH
