Dolly collectors and fans gathered one Saturday in July to...

Images by Michele Jassie, Marguerite Hogg, Kerry Moore, Sherelle Hawes and Edwina Falls.

The Dolly Gathering also had some useful workshops Doll collector Lucy Aissa Taylor was on hand to show fellow collectors how to restring dolls, shorten leg rubbers, tackle

15-PAGE SPECIAL

THE MAM’SELLE FASHION FILES

MAM’SELLE - FOR WELL DRESSED DOLLS We take a look at these sought-after sixties looks...

The ‘Gear Get-Ups’ range was available from 1965-67 Introduced in 1965, the Mam’selle range of fashion accessories and bedding were made in the Lines Brothers factory in Richmond, Surrey. Pedigree already made baby doll clothes and children’s fancy dress outfits under the Mam’selle brand, and it’s believed they branched into Mam’selle Sindy doll clothes in order to keep up with the ‘doll clone’ fashions of the day. In fact, the Mam’selle range was offered as an inexpensive alternative to the main Sindy fashions, which is crazy when you consider how well made they are and the eye-watering prices these pieces can command today. This is also likely due to the fact that they were made in smaller numbers than the main collections.

Mam’selle defined the swinging sixties fashions These younger and cooler fashions were clearly led by the trends of the day. The ‘swinging sixties’ was in full swing and the Mam’selle clothes leaned towards the Mod mood - mini skirts, sleeveless styles, shift dresses, patent finishes, go-go boots, coloured tights and baker boy caps. It was even reflected in some of the names - beat, pop, cool and wildcat.

How to spot Mam’selle: fact file All pieces are Made in England. Not all the garments have labels so pieces with them are much more sought after. Poppers are the flat ‘pancake’ style. These poppers, however, can vary in size and colour. The brochure sketches are not always reflective of the actual finished pieces.

The A-line shift shapes, Peter Pan collars, bib fronts, bows, and pop art prints and patterns ensured the Mam’selle range stood out from the other Sindy fashions. Also worth noting is the ‘signature’ bias binding finish on many pieces. Pedigree ceased the production of Mam’selle in 1969.

The toymaking company Lines Brothers was founded by the brothers Walter, William and Arthur Lines in 1919. The company used Tri-Ang as a brand name, since a triangle is made of three lines.

This nautical set is described as Sindy’s ‘fab holiday gear’ with white drill bell bottoms, string shirt, captain’s hat and duffle bag.

A stylish turquoise A-line day dress with black stitch detailing.

COLLECTION made from 1965-67, these outfits are now significantly rare, extremely fragile and often very expensive, but to me they are worth every cent - there’s nothing quite as wonderful as opening a parcel, and holding one of these wonderful outfits in my hands, then gently putting it onto one of my 1960s Sindys, knowing they are nearly as old as me!”

“When I first started collecting Sindy back in 2005, I didn’t know that the Mam’selle outfits even existed. When I stumbled across the Our Sindy Museum reference site some years later and discovered them, I knew instantly that I wanted to add as many as possible to my collection! I love the designs and fabrics used, as well as the accessories. They are all quintessentially mid-1960s and very much of their time. As the Mam’selle range was only

Paris, a major European city and the capital of France is known as the City of Lights (La Ville Lumière). A global centre for art, fashion, gastronomy and romantic culture, it’s also known as the City of Love, the Fashion Capital of the World, and the City of Art. The 19thcentury cityscape is crisscrossed by wide boulevards and the River Seine. Beyond such iconic landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and the 12th-century, Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral, the city is known for its cafe culture, chic style and the designer boutiques along the Rue du Faubourg SaintHonoré and the Champs Élysées.

Sindy is meeting a friend for afternoon tea after taking Emile, the pampered poodle, for a leisurely stroll down the Avenue Montaigne.

The girls were dressed to impress and enjoyed their exquisite tea hosted by Claude, the waiter. Just like true friends, they never ran out of things to talk about - the perfect day.

And of course Emile wasn’t left out. Claude brought him a big juicy bone!
