#MAMSELLECOVERCOMP
The making of a Mam'selle cover doll... It was a team effort judging all the images from the #mamsellecovercomp entries for the September issue. The Mam'selle editorial team pored over the entries for our cover competition to ensure this month’s 3rd birthday cover was perfection! Editor Penelope was overwhelmed with the quality of the entries. It definitely made the decision very difficult. Jacqueline, CEO of Pedigree Publishing, was on hand to advise.
>> Turn the page to hear from our winner and see all the very close runners-up. 29 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE
The September cover doll winner is .... Entries for the #mamsellecovercomp came in during June and July. A massive thank you to everyone who took the time to enter - as we know it’s a busy time for holidays. We asked you to share some birthday themed captures to celebrate our 3rd anniversary. The Mam'selle editorial team had a tough decision to make! They pored over every image and were blown away with the quality, creativity and sheer beauty of the pictures shared. What a talented bunch of Sindy dolls you are! We tried some images on the cover template, but in the end the clear winner was... Kevin from @sharingsindy The team decided that a cover image of the new 60th Anniversary Sindy was the perfect way to celebrate her arrival - and our birthday too. Massive Congratulations!
“Oh my goodness! My first ever Mam’selle cover. I’m so delighted and honoured to win. Especially with an image of the Limited Edition Sindy celebrating her 60th year, thank you so much to Pedigree for producing her.” @sharingsindy
The September cover doll runners-up are... The competition was so close we decided we had to share some of the runners-up, as these were all potentials. We placed them on the cover and, as you can see, they all make worthy winners and cover dolls. Interestingly, most of the runners-up had chosen to shoot three faces for the cover - to celebrate our 3rd anniversary. We thought this was wonderful.
#MAMSELLECOVERCOMP The Mam'selle editorial team really loved, in no particular order, the following covers by: 1.@the_minimalist_sindy 2. @sindy_doll_collector 3. @x.jac.c.x 4. @the_woodlanddollies

The love story of Doris & Buddy Part nineteen
You’re the One!
Peggy-Sue turns one!
Doris and Buddy have had a busy few months. Not only have they moved house, but Buddy has been on tour, they’ve had a visit from Doris’s mum, Cynthia - and they’ve been celebrating darling little Peggy-Sue’s first birthday. 34 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE
The family celebrated with a small party in their new home, which is in Dorset. Peggy-Sue had a big pink unicorn cake and lots of gifts. She had the most magical, fun-filled day.
The month was made extra special as Doris’s mum, Cynthia, was coming to visit all the way from Sweden.
‘You’re the One’ was recorded in December 1958. Photos by Cathy Palmer.
Here are some pictures of their new family home in Lulworth, which is on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. They have managed to do most of the decorating, and had new windows inserted into the centre gaps - which means they have beautiful sea views. The guest bedroom is also ready for nanny Cynthia’s upcoming visit.
MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE | 37
Meet Cynthia, Doris’s mum, at her wonderful mid-century modern home in Sweden. Cynthia, also an actress, moved to Sweden twenty or so years ago along with Doris, after her husband passed away. They decided to make a new life there and she soon landed an acting role at the local theatre. This is also where Doris began her singing career.
But, as we know, Doris was destined for Hollywood! Spotted while singing, she was offered a role in ‘Romance on the High Seas’ by Warner Brothers. She lived outside of Los Angeles in a motor home whilst filming and travelling.
Now in her early 70s, Cynthia is still very much the cool lady she was when she was a young actress. She loves colour as you can see by her home and style. She was looking forward to finally meeting her granddaughter.
She arrived late afternoon to meet her sweet grandchild Peggy-Sue for the first time.
MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE | 39
Cynthia was overjoyed to meet Peggy-Sue. It was also going to be a wonderful few weeks spending time with Doris and getting to know Buddy better. She was so happy that Peggy-Sue loved her new baby walker - it was worth bringing over on the plane from that stylish Swedish baby store.
Special thanks to Cathy Palmer for sharing her Doris and Buddy love story; for allowing me to use her images and adapt them and turn them into ‘classic’ style photo stories; and for always being so enthusiastic with her storylines, even when I messaged her at all hours. It’s been such an honour to create these pages and showcase them in Mam’selle.
We are going to miss Doris & Buddy. But, you never know, like every good actress and musician they may make a comeback!
The love story of Doris & Buddy How it all began...
the story of a photo story...
Over the last two years we’ve shared the love story of Doris and Buddy Doll, created by Cathy Palmer. Cathy kindly allowed Mam’selle to turn her pictures and stories into retro style photo features. Here’s a recap...

We followed her story as she met Buddy, and through their blossoming romance, wedding, the birth of their baby PeggySue, and finally a happy ending with a first birthday party for Peggy-Sue and a house move.

The inspiration for my dolls definitely comes from my love of the 1950s. My 'Doris' Sindy reminded me of the American actress Doris Day. My 'Buddy Dolly' doll is a Mattel Ken Fashionista Doll and is in memory of American Singer and Songwriter Buddy Holly. I have always connected with these two famous people, so the storyline came easily to me. Cathy Palmer

A jolly tee for Sindy... Pictures by Cathy @jollydollyshop and Bonita @dresslikeasindy
Cathy, Head Designer at Jolly Dolly Shop, was taking a moment to flip through Mam’selle magazine with a cuppa and a cake. Then suddenly she had the most amazing idea!
Bonita, I have a fantastic idea!
Cathy darling, so wonderful to hear from you...
Cathy picked up the phone and dialled straight through to the design office at Mam’selle. She explained that while taking a studio break and flipping through the Art Issue of Mam’selle, it dawned on her that the cover image by famed doll illustrator R.G.S. would make the most perfect summer t-shirt!
Bonita promptly put in a Zoom call with Rachel Godfroy-Scott, the doll designer and illustrator who had designed the art cover for the April 2024 issue of Mam’selle. Rachel thankfully granted permission for us to use the illustrations for an exclusive t-shirt design. Bonita worked with the Mam’selle team to design the fabric - it was quite tricky to get the correct size that ensured there was no fabric wastage. They placed a fabric order and anxiously awaited delivery.
Finally, I think this batch may just work...
After a little trial and error (and a few batches of fabric) we had finally found the correct scale. At least Cathy was very patient!
Cathy got to work using one of her classic patterns, and she mocked up the Mam’selle x Jolly Dolly Shop tee. Weekender spent a few days in the studio being a fit model - and instantly fell in love with the sample.
Time for a cuppa again, I think
Bonita and Cathy had decided that the collection would go up for sale in the new Dress Like A Sindy boutique online. They had discussed how their last collaboration (remember the Colette and Rachel dresses from 2022?) had got very confusing with messages flying all over the place on Instagram and Facebook.
47 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE
Cathy and Bonita chatted several times over the design process. As there had been a few fabric orders (all in the name of perfection, you see!) Bonita suggested that Cathy use the fabric remnants to make some of her fabulous headscarves to go with the tees. Thankfully, Cathy loved this idea and got so inspired she even knocked up some matching cushion sets (who doesn’t love a Jolly Dolly Shop cushion?).

HAPPY 1OTH BIRTHDAY TONNER MAM’SELLE SPOKE TO ROBERT TONNER, THE DESIGNER OF THE SINDY TONNER DOLLS, TO MARK THEIR TENTH ANNIVERSARY. BY DRESSLIKEASINDY

TONNER
TURNS TEN
obert Tonner grew up in Bluffton, Indiana, and moved to New York in the mid-seventies to study fashion design. He graduated from Parsons School of Design and then went to work on Seventh Avenue. During this time he began to notice commercial dolls and, later, art dolls, and learned that doll sculpting was an art form. It wasn’t long before he began to collect! After fifteen or so years in fashion, most notably working with famed American fashion designer Bill Blass (1922-2002), he left the city and fashion, and moved to upstate New York, where he started his doll-making career. Having always been intrigued by doll sculpting, he had tried his hand at it while he was still working on Seventh Avenue. However, it didn’t take long for doll making to become his passion, and in the early nineties, he left fashion to start his own doll company, Tonner Doll. Little by little, the company grew and became a very successful business. In 2013 Robert designed a limited collection of Sindy dolls, and as it’s the tenth anniversary Mam’selle decided it was time to catch up with Mr. Tonner himself.
The anniversary dolls were for Sindy’s 50th year in 2013. When and how did the opportunity to design a new Sindy come about? I’d always been a fan of Tammy here in the States and, of course, I knew about Sindy. Over the years, I looked into acquiring the rights for Tammy, but they were always tied up in some way. It occurred to me that perhaps Tammy’s English cousin might be available, and when I looked into it, she was. What were your initial thoughts? I think Sindy had always been designed as a toy, and I wanted to treat her more like a collector doll. I planned to use finer materials for the body and hair, and, of course, the clothing.

Can you share the research/design process with us? What were your starting points, and how far did you go back into the Sindy archive? Once word got out in the Sindy community that I was doing it, some lovely collectors sent me research materials. There was also a wonderful book on Sindy that I still have in my library (in storage at the moment). But mostly, I wanted to do my own thing with her – kind of classic modern. Talk us through your process to design a doll that wasn’t new as such, but also had a very distinctive look and style. Did you have any concerns taking on the iconic British doll? I felt pretty comfortable taking on Sindy – after all, for almost eight years my company was the only one allowed to do Harry Potter dolls – can’t get any more British than that! With the advances in technology at the time, I knew I could copy the Sindy sculpt, I knew how to make dolls, so it was just a matter of watching the production to make sure they were made correctly. And I think they were. 54 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE

Summer Fun (wave 1) by Tonner Sindy was released in September 2014. She cost $99.99 and was limited to 750.
What design elements were most important to you (for example, she must have rooted eyelashes/be made of certain material)? What were you most proud of and is there anything you would have liked to have added, but didn’t (we have heard a rumour about wigs)? I knew she had to have the rooted lashes, which was new for my factory, but they were able to figure it out. I think the thing I most wanted to deal with was the hair. I felt that Sindy needed the finest fibre doll hair that’s made – a Saran product made in Japan. We were able to use it, and I think that made all the difference. Wigs would have been great. But unfortunately, I didn’t have the licence long enough to explore that option. There were six dolls, six outfits, and three conference dolls. Can you tell us how you came to these decisions on numbers/limited numbers and styles? At the time, I would always do a line plan for the year. So with Sindy, six dolls, six outfits, and three special dolls is right.
What was the concept behind the fashion/shoes design and looks for each doll/outfit? The main idea behind the outfits was to do classic but modern looks for her.

Just Like A Princess (wave 2) by Tonner Sindy was released in August 2015. She cost $124.99 and was limited to 750.
Acquiring a licence for a doll can take some time. As I remember, the company was very accommodating, but it still took some time. I may have received the approval, but then it still took time to create the doll moulds for production. That process alone can take six to twelve months. Then there's the approval process. Sometimes I’m surprised when we can get a doll out in the same decade! The Tonner Sindy dolls are now 10 years old - and highly sought after. What do you think of this? That’s really wonderful. It was a fun project. There was a rumour that some conference dolls in storage were destroyed in a house fire - do you know about this? I’ve never heard this - I don’t think it’s true. I think I would have heard about conference dolls being destroyed! If you were asked to design Sindy for her next anniversary - what would you say? I’d love to design Sindy again – so I would say ‘yes’ if I can still find the moulds. And what would you change from last time? As to what I would do, who knows? Oh, I’d have to think about that....
WOW! THE TONNER SINDY IS TEN YEARS OLD! IT CERTAINLY WAS A PLEASURE AND AN HONOR TO BECOME PART OF THE SINDY HISTORY, EVEN IF IT WAS FOR A SHORT TIME. LONG LIVE SINDY! Robert Tonner, 2024
