The Sindy Set Meets... Meets... The Sindy Set
Checking out a new venue
Getting organised... Preparations began at Mam’selle HQ for the fourth bi-annual Sindy Set Meets. The team took over the staff break room to sort the leaflets, goody bags and craft supplies for the event on Saturday 19th October 2024. As with the previous meet-ups, leaflets full of useful information like the timings, venue address, and what to bring along were sent to attendees. The plan this time was much more relaxed, with no special guest speakers. This meant there was more time for catching up, shopping and, of course, some games.

As the Sindy Set Meets get bigger each time we often need a helping hand. And one thing about Sindy girls (and boys) is they are always willing to help! Mam’selle Editor Penelope spoke with her good friends over at the ‘Sindy Sue Boutique’ to see if they could help with this year’s goody bags. They came up with these wonderful Sindy Set Meets t-shirt designs and they enlisted the help of the ‘Sailor Sid Workshop’ who designed and made these fabulous teal ‘Stanley’ inspired travel cups with a contrasting red straw. The guests were sure in for a treat!

@sewist53 also enlisted the help of the ‘Sailor Sid Workshop’ to make and craft the travel mugs that each guest would receive.

Making plans... The Mam’selle team have been very busy behind the scenes getting everything organised for the Sindy Set Meets. It started back in late summer when they went to view a new location. They found the perfect venue called The Exhibit Balham, in South London. A pub, cocktail bar and restaurant that can cater for more people and also offer more room. We booked the Gallery, a premium penthouse level area with its own private balcony and bar - this meant more space for mingling, more shopping tables and more room for games and competitions.

There were two very relaxed competitions for attendees of the Sindy Set Meets. We enlisted the helpful bar staff at The Exhibit to be our judge. We also made some miniature Sindy boxes thanks to some print-outs from @x.jac.c.x
The craft competition involved making an original outfit for Sindy - out of balloons! The designs were amazing and congratulations went to Wanda @little_miss_dressy who won. But, @dresslikeasindy felt that Sindy in the pumpkin outfit was a fabulous runner-up - it reminded her of The Flintstones.

The attendees were also asked to bring a Sindy dressed for Halloween and they excelled themselves with some amazing costumes and outfits. The overall winner was Emma @delvesdolls.

The @dollsabouttown Weekend Collection designed by Matthew Hadley made its debut at the Sindy Set Meets in London. Matthew shared his limited collection of handmade fashion looks, explaining that the inspiration was “What would Sindy be doing at the weekend?” 15 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE
“Sindy would be shopping for vintage treasures at Portobello Market, in London.” This set included a gorgeous kimono made from a vintage crepe de chine fabric (found at Portobello market, no less) with a fabulous and vibrant print and taffeta banding at cuffs and neck edge. Worn casually over ‘snow wash’ jeans and a pale pink tee shirt. A bead necklace, satin ribbon hair band and rose gold purse completed this stylish look.

“ Sindy would be riding at her country estate with her stable of horses.” This set is perfect for horsey weekends at the country manor. Classic riding jodhpurs with suede knee patches and a pretty floral print blouse with romantic frilled collar and cuffs. A forest green quilted jacket with a corduroy collar keeps the chill off and features a vent at the centre back and pocket flaps with gold button details. The fabric has been carefully quilted ‘in-house’ by @dollsabouttown. A pink cotton neck scarf is included (but wear it any way you like), as well as a pair of ankle boots. Tally-ho Sindy.

“Sindy would be taking a walk on a blustery beach in a small village in Cornwall.” This set is weather-proofed and stylish for exploring the gusty shores of Cornwall. Comfy ‘tomboy’ dungarees are the order of the day with top-stitch detailing and a tiny red tab, worn over a blouse in fine pale blue and white stripes with a stand-up broderie lace collar. To keep the rain out, a jolly yellow hooded raincoat with a striped lining in the hood and cuffs, and roomy pockets to keep those hands warm. The coat fabric is premium quality - it is actually rain-proofed. Came with Cornish pasty and blue stripe style plate - provides sustenance for those long walks.
“A day trip to Paris on the Eurostar would make the perfect weekend for Sindy shopping, food and fashion.” A stylish red hip-length double breasted jacket features button details and a box pleat at the centre back. The smart collar frames the face and is set off with a contemporary cherry print soft cotton blouse with a removable necktie, tailored cropped trousers and a classic felt beret with a grosgrain hatband. The look is completed with a burnished silver leather look bag with chain straps adding a snappy touch to that parading down Avenue Montaigne. This feature may not be to every Sindy fan’s taste, but please indulge me! My tween daughter Marnie is a massive (MASSIVE) fan of Taylor Swift thereby introducing me to her every move, album, easter eggs (IYKYK), lyrics, and of course, style. One trip to The Eras Tour later and I’m a fully fledged Swiftie (mum). In the lead up to all this Swift-dom I thought it would be fun to dress Sindy as the pop sensation, especially as the Kid Kreations Music Star Sindy has a very Tay-Tay inspired look. I reached out to one of the best doll knitters I know, Clare @actions_mans_nan with an idea... MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE | 19
I asked Clare if she could make a Sindy-sized Taylor Swift Folklore cardigan, as seen in the music video for her song, err titled ‘Cardigan’ from the Folklore album. This oversized, cream knit cardigan is distinctive for its navy trim and silver star patches on the elbows.

The entries came in thick and fast and none more so than from Sally @the_woodlanddollies who shared an amazing nine different entries! Thank you Sally - it really made my day every time one of your images popped up of another Era. The winning image (left) was chosen by my daughter. She loved the style, the pink fluffy jacket, and the inclusion of one of Taylor’s famous cats. The images went on to inspire this feature and I couldn’t help but plan it era by era - it’s only fitting. As much as I have enjoyed pulling this article together for myself, really I have done it for my daughter, Marnie. “Love you to the Moon and Saturn.”

IN MY RED ERA Swift released a very personal album exploring love, heartbreak, healing and hanging out with your friends with Red (2012) at age 22. Its rock and pop influences linger all over smash hits ‘I Knew You Were Trouble When You Walked In,’ ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,’ and ‘All Too Well.’ An iconic look from her ‘Red’ era was a shirt that says "not a lot going on at the moment" with a black hat and shorts, seen in her "22" music video. A SINDY LOVER? A ‘love letter’ of sorts to all the Swifties who stood by her after the drama of the Rep era. Lover (2019) is a cotton-candy, dream-filled pop album with fun and some important messages interweaved through the very heart of every song. There’s also an element of excitement about her blossoming relationship with Joe Alwyn, with catchy tunes ‘Cruel Summer’, ‘Lover’, ‘Paper Rings’, and ‘London Boy’. As well as Swift exploring sexism in ‘The Man’, there’s an LBGTQ+ anthem ‘Me!’ and politics with ‘Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince’, which is said to refer to Donald Trump’s hold on America during the period. A planned ‘LoverFest’ tour was halted due to the global pandemic of 2020.

SINDY FOLKLORE... A surprise album released during the first year of lockdown due t0 COVID, Folklore (2020) saw Taylor return to a more folky, alternative country sound. Produced virtually, this alternative indie album featured lots of strong storytelling and lyricism. This included the iconic teenage love triangle songs ‘Betty’, ‘Cardigan’ and ‘August’, plus ‘Exile’, ‘The Last Great American Dynasty’ and ‘Mirrorball’. Folklore earned the singer-songwriter her third Album of the Year Grammy, making her the first woman to accomplish that feat.

Hailed as the ‘sister’ album to Folklore, as they were released less than five months apart. Evermore (2020) was a continuation of lockdown musing, storytelling and escapist folky tunes. The aesthetics are very similar on both albums, although the most noticeable difference is that Folklore is more of a summertime album while Evermore has more of a winter vibe. It includes a Christmas song of sorts with ‘Tis The Damn Season.’ Notable tracks include ‘Champagne Problems,’ ‘No Body No Crime’, featuring sister group Haim, and of course, ‘Willow’.

SINDY AT MIDNIGHTS Midnights (2022) was a return to the autobiographical lyrics Swifties were accustomed to. This 13-track concept pop album dubbed ‘dream bedroom pop’ focused on ‘13 sleepless late nights’ ruminating on love, heartbreak, self-doubt and overthinking. For example, ‘Anti-Hero’ is said to be about her own insecurities and ghosts of the past. Tracks like ‘Lavender Haze’ and ‘Bejewelled’ cement its retro, ‘70s vibe and ’Midnight Rain’, ‘Maroon’ and ‘Out Of The Woods’ are believed to reference past relationships. Whilst ‘Karma’, ‘Vigilant S**t’ and ‘Mastermind’ settle some scores. We can also be thankful to Midnights because it opened the door to The Eras Tour.

THE ERAS TOUR Taylor announced The Eras Tour in late 2022 - and set off a frenzy as fans tried to get tickets for the following year. In what was to become one of the first tours in history to surpass US$1 billion in revenue. The tour was her first since the Reputation stadium tour in 2018 as, due to COVID, Taylor was forced to cancel what would have been her sixth tour, ‘Lover Fest’, in 2020. Taylor Swift cheat sheet Eras Tour: The Eras Tour by Taylor Swift commenced on March 17, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona, and concludes on December 8, 2024 in Vancouver. She has done 149 shows spanning five continents. Eras Tour: The tour runs for 3.5 hours, with a set list consisting of 45 songs, and an additional 2 surprise songs each night. Eras Tour: The show is divided up into nine distinct eras (different to the 11 eras that many believe she has to reflect each studio album). This is partly due to Taylor not including songs from her debut album, and combining the sister albums 'Folklore' and 'Evermore'.
Taylor added tracks from The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD) into the European leg of the Eras Tour in 2024. Unveiling a new black and white, moody era dubbed ‘Coquette Core’ with a custom Vivienne Westwood gown, no less.

The Eras Tour was produced by Swift's in-house tour production company, Taylor Swift Touring, with sets designed as a tribute to Swift's discography across her 18-year career. Her onstage outfits gained widespread media coverage as she donned costumes with microphones and guitars each aligning to the overarching themes and palette of the album/era. Crystals, however, were a unifying fashion choice - costumes of every act were adorned with them.

Taylor's attire and accessories were mostly custom-made by fashion houses such as Atelier Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Etro, Nicole + Felicia Couture, Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Ashish, Alberta Ferretti, Jessica Jones, and Oscar de la Renta, all usually paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and boots. Swift wore colour and style variations of some costumes at different shows and in different cities. Swift's black fedora from "22" was designed by Gladys Tamez - and one was given to a chosen child fan at each and every concert.

'Swiftie Steps' The Spanish Steps leading up to Wembley Stadium were painted to celebrate the start of the tour in London in June 2024. Produced from an original artwork, 'Auras', by artist Frank Styles, was painted inside his garage and printed onto vinyl panels that were attached to the steps.
Underneath the steps a 6x6 metre spray paint mural of colour and lyrics ‘…Ready For It?’ by MurWalls & HUMOR, a Tunbridge Wells based street artist.

Taylor pays tribute to 1989 film Dead Poets Society in her music video for ‘Fortnight’, featuring Post Malone. It was Swift's idea to deliberately reference the film, according to Ethan Hawke, who appears alongside other Dead Poets castmate Josh Charles in the video.
At the Grammy Awards Taylor announced the release of The Tortured Poets Department (2024). Landing in April, it dropped with an anthology edition of the collection (which was almost double the original in duration). Many songs on this dark (both aesthetically and thematically) album are said to be about her public image and very public heartbreaks, her own depression and, in Swift's own words, a sense of "female rage”. We dare you not to sing along with ‘Fortnight’, ‘I Can Do It With A Broken Heart’, and ‘So High School’, an ‘80s-esque pop tune rumoured be about her current beau, American football tight end Travis Kelce.

CHANIA IN CRETE, GREECE
@DRESSLIKEASINDY On the island of Crete in Greece is a delightful city called Chania. It can be divided into two parts: the old town and the modern city, which is the larger one. Known for its narrow streets, waterfront restaurants and, most famously, its 14th-century Venetian harbour in the old town. At the harbour entrance is a 16th-century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences.
DON’T MISS Eleftherios Venizelos Square. The Archaeological Museum of Chania. Old Venetian Port and lighthouse. The Topanas, the name of the alleyways and back streets of the Old Town. Lots of great tavernas, shops and bars. The Maritime Museum of Crete Balos Lagoon beach - it’s probably the most famous and most photographed beach in Crete!
