Hello Dolls! Welcome to the November issue of Mam'selle! A mini magazine for Sindy doll lovers, fans and collectors. As I sit here typing this month’s Editor’s letter, rain is pouring down the Mam’selle HQ windows and it feels like it’s been grey for days. Don’t know about you dolls, but I’m ready to hunker down and await the bright lights of Christmas! Until then we do hope this issue brings some joy to your month - we think it’s the perfect companion to some hot chocolate and a cosy throw!

THE #SAVEASINDY UPDATE The Save A Sindy project began in 2020 as a way to restore, make over and create some OOAK Sindys that normally wouldn’t get displayed in The Little Sindy Museum, founded by Martina Söderström in Sweden. The 2023 limited edition of ten 60th anniversary Weekender-styled dolls that had specially made moving limbs were all re-homed. Here we catch up with where the ten girls ended up...

01: OONA Where do you live? I live in Ludlow in Shropshire, UK. How are you settling in? I’m settling in just fine and love my new home. Have you made any Sindy friends? I have made lots of new Sindy friends. I live next door to Cowboy Sindy and we’ve had many long chats! Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? I live on a shelf for now. My new owner is doing a refurb on a new Sindy Home and some display cabinets. I’m still in my original box, and very happy in there at present. Owner: Sharon

02: TOWA Where do you live? Plymouth in Devon - Britain’s Ocean City in the United Kingdom. How are you settling in? Very well indeed. I love living by the sea and walking in Dartmoor’s National Park. Have you made any Sindy friends? I have made one really close best friend, Veronique - who is a columnist for Mam’selle. We get on so well. Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? I have been played with, but very carefully. I do feel life is for living and not for staying in a box - LOL! Owner: Kevin @sharingsindy

03: THERESA Where do you live? I live in Southport, by the seaside in Lancashire. How are you settling in? Wonderfully! I love my new home with all the mod cons. There's even a caravan, so I may even get to go camping in the summertime. Have you made any Sindy friends? I’ve made loads of friends, but to be honest there are so many dolls here, I don't think I’ve met everyone properly yet. I’ve met Great Aunt Wendy (Weekender 1963). I love nothing more than hanging out with Monica in the bedroom, listening to her old vinyl collection and reading the latest issue of Mam’selle Magazine. Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? I mainly stay on display out of my box, but have appeared in some dioramas at home. My owner thinks I’m just too special to take out and about. She tells me I’m wonderful and she wants to keep me nice. Owner: Sarah @polly.dollydaydreams

04: FIONA Where do you live? I live in London now. I enjoy going for walks in the many parks - Regent’s Park is a favourite spot - and taking in the sights. I also love shopping at The Toy Project in Selfridges. How are you settling in? I’m settling in just fine. I have been warmly welcomed by my now extensive family of Sindy, Susi and Tammy dolls. We all love chatting, playing games and doing things together. Have you made any Sindy friends? Oh yes! I have become fast best friends with Sindy Quant. Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? “Life is too short to stay in a box”, I say. I plan to turn my box into a storage unit of some sort - maybe I’ll add some shelves inside. But for now, I love being out there. Owner: Sandra @thesmallpretender

05: FAY Where do you live? Scone in Perthshire, Scotland. How are you settling in? Very well, thank you. I am living on a shelf in my owner’s bedroom with her childhood teddy (that's from 1967 - she got it aged three, when her younger brother was born), and a vintage Weekender Sindy. My owner managed to buy her at auction, as her original doll got lost when her parents moved house. Have you made any Sindy friends? Slowly - I did spend Christmas with the other girls in the Sindy Townhouse. Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? I’m being kept safe with the teddy and Weekender - but will be appearing in photos very soon.

06: CESS Where do you live? Östersund, Sweden. How are you settling in? I’m getting very cosy on my shelf after a long wait sitting here in my box. Have you made any Sindy friends? For now I’m just getting to know my surroundings, and my 200 Sindy neighbours are all hiding behind closed doors - as the Swedes are apparently known for not opening the apartment door because of the risk of running into a neighbour! Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? I’m on display, as my owner likes to see me every day. She says my sweet appearance makes her happy and reminds her of her lovely friend Martina at TLSM. Owner: Beatrice

07: SUE Where do you live? I live in Sundbyberg, which is a small town just outside Stockholm in Sweden. How are you settling in? I settled in so quickly. I am so lucky, as I have a bunch of lovely sisters and we have so much fun! Have you made any Sindy friends? Sofia lets us try on all the nice vintage clothes from her big wardrobe. It's so fun. Some are really odd, but then we get an extra laugh! Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? My foster mother has a phobia of tight spaces, so I was moved out of the box pretty fast. Owner: Sofia @sindy.jag

08: AITA Where do you live? I live in a small town in Surrey - not too far from London, which is very exciting. How are you settling in? I’m settling in well - the other Sindys have been so friendly. I’ve also managed to land a job at Mam’selle magazine. Have you made any Sindy friends? Besides the team at Mam’selle, who have all been so welcoming, I have been spending a lot of time with my neighbours. Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? A mixture of both. When I’m not at the office or hanging out with xxx, I’m on display next to Danbury Mint Sindy. She’s apparently the only other displayer - she has a glass house, while I am in my original box. Owner: @dresslikeasindy

09: NIEVE Where do you live? I said goodbye to my Swedish family and am now in North Wales. I live on a farm near the Snowdonia National Park. How are you settling in? I’m really settling in well - living on a farm is a dream. Have you made any Sindy friends? I have made a few close friends, especially my hairdresser Abigail who has introduced me to Alun. He’s very cute! Are you going to be displayed (in the box or on a stand), or played with? I will be mostly living on my stand, but will be taking part in some dioramas. Owner: Sandra

10: TIA Where do you live? I stayed in Sweden and live in The Little Sindy Museum (TLSM). How are you settling in? Great - I love it here! My owner says I look happy every time she looks at me. Have you made any Sindy friends? Oh, yes! My besties are KK Weekender Sindy and the porcelain Danbury Mint Weekender Sindy and, of course, the First Lady herself - Weekender Sindy from 1963. The best-selling female solo touring artist of all time, the tour featured her unmatched catalogue of music from the 1980s to today. Madonna stated: “I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for.” Sindy added, “And I'm excited to explore her famous looks from each decade!”

Desperately Seeking Susan was Madonna's first major screen role. Released in 1985, it also stared Rosanna Arquette and Aidan Quinn. Set in New York City, the plot involves the interaction between two women – a bored housewife and a bohemian drifter – linked by various messages in the personals section of a newspaper. It’s noted for its impact on 1980s fashion, especially among the young female audience at that time.

True Blue is a dance-pop album that features influences of Motown sound, girl groups, and Latin pop. It’s inspired by Madonna's love for Sean Penn (whom she married in 1985 on her 27th birthday), to whom she dedicated it. In the eighties Madonna released four albums: Her debut, Madonna (1983), Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986) and Like a Prayer (1989).

the nineties In April 1990, Madonna began her Blond Ambition World Tour. It was proclaimed the best tour of that year. The Girlie Show tour kicked off in 1993. This decade also saw Madonna star in ‘A League of Their Own’ and ‘Evita’ and release four albums. These included her first greatest hits compilation album, The Immaculate Collection (1990), then Erotica (1992), Bedtime Stories (1994), and Ray of Light (1998).

the twenties To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the start of her recording career, a remix album titled Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones was released in 2022. Then in January 2023 Madonna announced the Celebration Tour, her first greatest hits concert tour, which ran from October 2023 to May 2024. Madonna has reportedly restarted work on her biographical film, which was postponed from 2020. The project, with Julia Garner still on as the lead, is now called Who's That Girl.

before Claudette from @thestripyshed is a master at upcycling for Sindy. A ‘make do and mender’, Claudette loves to craft for her Sindys and Sylvanian Families. Here she shows us how to make a ‘faux’ hot roller brush from an old mascara wand for Sindy. Ideal for home or salon use. How to make: First cut the mascara wand to the desired brush handle length and round off the cut end with some fine sandpaper. I also lightly sanded the rest of the brush handle to give the paint a good surface to stick to. Next, paint your design in white to ensure your final colours stand out against the dark brush handle. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying your next colour. As the paint dries, you can use a cocktail stick to remove any paint in areas you don't want as you go along. Be creative with your design and add a logo if desired. Once you are happy with your final design and it has dried, give the handle a coat of sealant. Allow to fully dry. And now you have a salon ready hair brush!

1984 SINDY MAGAZINE Sindy got her very own Sindy Magazine (44555) by Pedigree 40 years ago in 1984. This beautiful 64-page full colour magazine featured stories, puzzles, colouring and games all for just 75p. Unfortunately, for collectors of the time there was only ever one issue published. Now something of a collectors’ item (selling for £15+), it wasn’t until 1986 that another magazine dedicated to Sindy was published by Marvel.
