The summer may have been dominated by a certain movie but I wasn't going to let that deter me from ensuring Sindy made her mark. This year especially - as our beloved girl is 60 years young. So I set about using my journalist contacts to pitch a 'Move over Barbie - Sindy is 60 this year' feature. This led to me being invited onto This Morning to share my collection. Or, part of my collection as I couldn't transport and set up everything - we all know how big the house is! After initially being contacted by a researcher the week before I appeared on live TV, I was then interviewed by an assistant producer over the phone. The segment was

changed to 'Barbie vs

Sindy vs Action Man… but which is worth the most?' and was to be presented by the show's resident pawnbroker & money making expert Dan Hatfield. I was joined by a Barbie collector Victoria from T H I S

On Tuesday 10th July 2023 our Editor Penelope got an access-all-areas pass to the This Morning set and studios at the Television Centre in White City, London. While the other Sindys got ready for their close up, Penelope took notes from behind the scenes about our debut appearance on TV. This Morning is a British daytime magazine programme broadcast live every weekday from 1012.30pm. It first aired in 1988.

an

Action Man figure collector, Andy from @vintage_action_man I've worked in publishing and media for a long time and have always been behind the scenes, So, needless to say I was nervous about appearing on TV and live TV no less! I think I buried my fear (and faced it anyway) as I was so determined to shine a spotlight on Sindy, our wonderful doll community, and also on my side project, that being Mam'selle. We all have to be our own cheerleader after all - right? MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE | 27

The quick turnaround of TV didn't faze me

I

had

worked

on

weekly

magazines for many years, so I knew I wouldn't have much time to prepare (or overthink). I spent much of the weekend before sorting through my collection

and

working

out

what

scenesetters to take. I already knew I was taking every doll (how could I choose?)! I then set about dressing them all in original Sindy outfits complete with original accessories if I had them. I was picked up on the Monday (the day before the show) to arrive at the studio to set up my collection. My collection was taken separately by an insured courier - I was slightly nervous about this. We then met at the studios in White City, London. It took me over two hours to unpack, set up and style my small dioramas. I'd decided this was how I wanted to showcase Sindy loved, played with and nostalgic. I was joined by Victoria, who had a massive collection of boxed Barbie dolls. It's interesting how different all collectors are. Victoria was very much a boxed doll girl. Andy, the Action Man collector (who

set

up

in

record

time

the

following morning), had an array of pristine figures, all dressed on stands that had carefully been removed from his display cabinet at home for their appearance. What's more, the team at ITV had even hired overnight security for us - a guard watched over our collections all evening, night and into the following morning too. That did make me feel more settled. And, I think only one of my Sindys 'fell' overnight, so all was ok with my makeshift set-ups. Phew...

L I G H T S ,

C A M E R A ,

A C T I O N !

The morning of the show I was collected early at 7am (with my Danbury Mint Sindy in my handbag!). I arrived at the studio at 8.30am. Our segment was planned for 12.10pm - one of the last features on the show. So, arriving at 8.30am may seem strange. But the time went surprisingly fast and you really won't believe what goes on behind the scenes (it's non-stop) until the show airs at 10am. On arrival I was welcomed into the 'green room' with a very much-needed cup of tea. I was swiftly sent into the hair and make-up room, where there were about 4-5 artists working on various guests, experts and presenters (main presenters Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond have their own rooms). I was swapped in and out of the chair as different talent arrived that were on air before me, or who needed touch-ups. In this time we were also given a dress rehearsal - this had to be done once the other breakfast show/news were off air - so they can ensure everything runs to time. When the clock struck 12...Cinderella, aka Sindy, was on. We were miked up and sent on set. I can't begin to tell you the butterflies I had in my stomach. But I remembered my friend's advice: speak slowly, talk to the presenters (not the camera) and breathe! I figured I was talking about something I loved, so it would all be OK in the end. I'm not really sure how I got through it, what I actually said, or how I looked - it all went so fast. I haven't plucked up the courage to watch it back yet! Thankfully, the presenters make you feel very relaxed and at ease they do this on a daily basis I guess. I didn't get the feeling that Alison was a Sindy fan (I think I may have fared better with Holly Willoughby) but, either way, the Sindys and I have had our 15 minutes (OK, 2 and a half minutes) of fame. And, after 60 years Sindy totally deserved that.

BARBIE VS SINDY VS ACTION MAN… BUT WHICH IS WORTH THE MOST? as published online at

They’re the self-confessed doll fanatics with over 400 plastic fantastic figures between them, but who will win the Barbie vs Sindy Vs Action Man battle? Bonita Turner has been collecting Sindy dolls since the late 1970’s and now spends hours every day taking photos of her 100 doll collection for her Instagram account. Bonita thinks Sindy doesn’t get the recognition she deserves because of Barbie… something Barbie collector Victoria disagrees with. She believes it’s right that Barbie remains ‘top doll’, and also joins us today with her 250 strong Barbie collection. Whereas Andy Whitehouse thinks his 100 Action Man collection trumps the lot. But which is the best? And which collection is worth more? Pawn broker Dan Hatfield is here to give his verdict. These toys aren't child's play when it comes to how much they can be worth! But how do you know if your toys are worth money? Check out sites such as eBay, Etsy and Ruby Lane for prices. Compare your doll with the ones on these sites. Get second opinions on prices from Facebook groups and online forums dedicated to the toy you want to sell. Most collectors love to help. Condition is everything! Be realistic about what state your toy is in and price accordingly. You may find one on eBay for £200 but if yours doesn't have its box or is damaged this price could drop dramatically. Choose how you want to sell. To be honest prices do not vary dramatically between eBay, Etsy and other sites when it comes to selling these types of toys but I've seen great results when people sell at toy shows and via fan sites. Just check out the costs before you commit and have fun!

60th Birthday Special

WE ARE SIXTY TOO! SINDY & ME: 60 FABULOUS YEARS

beautiful girls. I'm not sure how many I ended up with, but I had a lot. What I do know is that my first one was the blonde haired one that I'm holding in the photo. Unfortunately, that was not my original, but about two and a half years ago I decided to track down all my favourite childhood toys that I can remember loving.

ADELE HUNTER WAS 60 IN JULY "I remember my childhood love of my Sindy dolls as clear as day (this hasn't changed even now, as you can see from the photo). Looking through the Sindy leaflets at all the fun outfits would keep me entertained for ages. No Barbie dolls for me (sorry Barbie). If a relative bought one for me they were sent to the bottom of the toy box! I was little Miss Sindy in my young 3 year old mind, which is how old I was when I got my first one. My mum was good at knitting, so I had lots of pretty cardigans and other items for my

For Christmas 2020 one of my sons asked me what what I'd like - so I asked for a Sindy doll. I didn't specify which, I just said a Sindy. I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened her on Christmas Day. A 1963 MIE original and she was dressed in the complete Dream Date outfit. He didn't have a clue what he'd bought, he just said she'd almost broke the bank for him! Haha. I've collected since then and added all the gorgeous Sindys you can see here, as well as a few of her friends. As to a favourite, well I honestly can't choose as they're all beautiful (we all have a few we prefer to others I guess), but I've chosen the Sindy my son bought for me as she's the one that got me collecting again. I have to say a huge thank you to my husband though here, as he's the one that's indulged my passion for Sindy since and is always surprising me with another doll or outfit. Happy 60th birthday Sindy."

SHIRL BANISTER, WAS 60 IN JUNE "My parents gave me my first Sindy for Christmas 1971, together with a bed and wardrobe. She is a Trendy Girl and is still my favourite today. I’m always surprised how good she still looks considering the missions she had to go on in my brother’s Action Man armoured car! I have other dolls of that period, but I think Sindy is the one with the prettiest face and sweetest expression and now I have a collection of 35. It’s great to think we are both still going strong in our 60th year."

"I live in Centurion, South Africa - and this is a picture of me now with my very first Sindy. I bought her in 1974 with money I'd saved (I was so scared she'd be sold out before I had enough). I now have 28 Sindys of which the ballerinas and nurses are my all time favourites. I love the fact that in September we will both be 60. Such an honour to celebrate with Miss Sindy."

BIRTHDAY NEWS A BRITISH ICON IS BORN IN 1963

Join us in celebrating the 60th anniversary of Sindy. The doll you love to dress arrived in 1963 in her iconic weekenders outfit.

JULIE CAMPBELL 60 IN NOVEMBER "I never actually had a childhood Sindy, although I always wanted one. Now I'm making up for lost time and stopped counting around 70! It's hard to choose a favourite, but I do have a soft spot for the 60s girls and love a sidepart. I'm delighted to be sharing my 60th birthday with such a British icon."

60th Birthday Special

CAROLE BARRAN WAS 60 IN JUNE "I got my first ever Sindy I think around 5 or 6. I can’t remember one particular Sindy, but my love of dolls even back then was definitely established at a very young age. I even pushed my dolly pram to church one Saturday. The only trouble with that was that I was only 3, and of course church was closed. With an early love of clothes and dressing up, owning a Sindy was going to be a high priority in my life. An early childhood memory was making a sofa for my Sindy in the shed with my dad. He loved pottering around and making and fixing things. So whilst I appeared very girlie and maternal, building things and being with my dad were the best times. I can even remember that I used a brown fabric for her to sit on! Having just been re-introduced to the world of Sindy's as I approached my 60s seemed a serendipitous moment! My memories of owning Sindys and the love I had for them initially left me hankering to be back to those times. Everything was so simple then: me Sindy and sometimes Tiny Tears, and of course my dad! It would be remiss of me not to mention by mum as she was the one who would go shopping and come back with bags of dolls clothes. 51 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE

BORN IN 1963 I still remember the joy those treats brought. I must have been only around 9 when I was bought a Singer treadle sewing machine, as I clearly loved dressing the dolls, so naturally, making them outfits was the next step. Perhaps this is why I am now in my happiest owning a childrenswear brand inspired by the birth of my first grandchild. Clearly it was all written down for me, but not until my 60th year was it going to come into fruition. I am therefore very proud to be sharing the stage with Sindy as I like to think I’m a little bit like her - definitely because we clearly share a love of clothes!! That will never change!!"

60th Birthday Special

BIRTHDAY NEWS SARAH WILSON WAS 60 IN JANUARY In 2019 my parents decided to downsize and of course my old room was cleared out and everything boxed up for me to take away. It wasn’t long after that lockdown struck and, like everyone else, I took to doing jigsaws, baking banana bread and walking round the block once a day. It was then I decided to open the shoebox and rediscover Sindy once again. I started going through my Sindy clothes and taking photographs of her dressed in all the fabulous outfits I had lovingly stored over the years. It was when I began posting these photos online that I realised there were actually other Sindy fans and collectors out there and I joined a few Facebook groups. "I actually got my first Sindy in 1965. Even though I was too young to really know her then, as I got older she became my favourite of all my fashion dolls. Over the years I saved my pocket money and collected dozens of outfits, particularly those from the 60s, but I was still collecting up to 1972. I would spend hours dressing her and kept everything in a large shoebox. As I got older, Sindy still sat on top of her shoebox on a shelf in my room. When I left home and got married she stayed behind in my old bedroom, but every time I visited my parents I would take the shoebox down from the shelf and redress her in something suitable for the season, or maybe change her into pyjamas for the night.

From that moment I have built up my collection with outfits from the 70s and 80s, as well as hunting down those elusive missing items from my 60s collection. I also started buying more Sindys and now have 15 ranging from 1965 – 1987. On my 60th birthday my parents wanted to buy me something special, so I asked for an original 1983 Sindy Super Home. I now have a Sindy room where I catalogue and store all my clothes and a fabulous Sindy house crammed with original furniture and accessories. Turning 60 the same year as Sindy is really special. I feel like we have grown up together and shared our love of fashion. Every new Sindy has a story to tell and a special memory, but my first Sindy is always going to have a special place in my life."

60th Birthday Special SINDY: MINT IN BOX!

LYNDA O'BRIEN

WAS 60 IN FEBRUARY "As the youngest of nine children, eight being girls, I always had dolls around me. My earliest memory of Sindy is when my second eldest sister got married in February 1968, as I was her flower girl and turning 5 that same month. My sister had Sindy dressed in a wedding dress just like hers and Paul was in the London suit. They were put on the bridal car as decoration. In the photo of me with my Sindy I was around 7 or 8 years old. Sindy has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My favourite was a hard head blonde which actually belonged to my sister. I feel pretty good about turning 60 the same year as Sindy it's just a number. I have to say Sindy looks pretty good for 60. LOL"

Sarah also entered the DollyCon Cosplay as a mint in box 'Weekender' Sindy from 1963...

MANDY ANN CRAWLEY

60 IN OCTOBER

"My first ever and only Sindy was a Trendy Girl and she was a Christmas present in 1972. My fondest memories are with my darling Nanny Hilda, as she patiently taught me how to make Sindy clothes. I absolutely loved making her new clothes and then playing with her.

I FEEL VERY HONOURED TO BE CELEBRATING MY 60TH WITH SINDY! I would say I'm relatively new to Sindy collecting now, as I only started collecting again in October 2022. It started as I wanted to make a nostalgia unit for my grandchildren Ralph and Pearl, to show them the toys myself and my husband loved as children. I was only after one Sindy, but I fell down a rabbit hole and now have 14! I defy anyone to pick up one of these beautiful girls and not smile. There’s something very magical about them. I feel very honoured to be celebrating my 60th with Sindy! I’m very lucky to have a wonderful family to share my love of Sindy with and I shall raise a glass or two to her and me. Sindy on the 6th of September (also my Ralphie's birthday!) and me on the 5th of October!'

Birth Announcements Congratulations to Sindy, born at Pedigree Toys & Dolls Ltd. Lines Brothers Factory in Morden Road, Merton, Surrey, UK on September 6th 1963.

SINDY'S RECORD 1966 Sindy's Record (12SA9) is a real pop song written for Sindy by Cliff Warwick and The Dollybeats. This 45 RPM vinyl was released in 1966 and features a story and song. The A-side has the story of how Sindy met her favourite Liverpudlian boy band of all time, and on the B-side is a catchy little pop tune "Sindy, the doll we love the best". The back cover shares small biographies of all the Dollybeats band members, where you will discover Cliff was a former student at a Liverpool art school (remind you of anyone?) ** P.S Cliff Warwick and the Dollybeats are fictitious.
