Space Ranger Makeovers @ G A R Y _ A N D E R S O N 1 9 7 5
Chief Nurse Sindy has joined the Space Ranger crew as the Chief Nurse. I started by giving her a good clean, then shrunk her head (see tip on page 39) and restyled her hair. Her outfit is completely handmade, except her white Sindy tights and boots. She is wearing official Action Man Space Ranger gloves (which I also shrunk to fit). The chief wears a white uniform to tell her apart from the other medical crew, who wear light blue.

Yeoman This Marx Sindy is joining the Space Ranger crew as a Yeoman. I started by giving her a good clean and restyling her hair. Her outfit is handmade by me. I digitally draw the design, then print it onto transfer paper. I then iron the design onto fabric and cut it out except her gloves and Yeoman accessory which were designed and 3D printed by a friend. Her boots are vintage Sindy.

Space Ranger Patroller With this 80s Sindy I started by shrinking her head - so she fits better with the scale of the Action Man figures. Her helmet, gun, gloves and boots are all from an official Action Man Space Patroller outfit - I just shrunk the gloves and boots to fit her better. Her jumpsuit is made from a Lycra fabric in the same shade of pale blue as the AM jumpsuits. I also made her a tabard, belt and holster - as the AM ones are too big for Sindy.
1980s Hasbro Sindy joins the Space Ranger crew as Space Ranger Patroller
1980s Space Fantasy joins the Space Ranger crew as a Communications Officer
Communications Officer As usual I start with a good clean-up and restyle of the hair. I styled her hair using the hot water method. I found her original outfit on eBay. But she also wears a handmade tabard uniform when at work.

1980s Hasbro Sindy joins the Space Ranger crew as an astronaut.
Astronaut This 1987 Sindy was given a good clean and hair wash. I again used the boiling water method. She was dressed in a jumpsuit, boots and gloves from an astronaut Barbie. To complete her look she has an Action Man helmet that I repainted and I concealed the AM logo with craft gems.

1960s Paul joins the Space Ranger crew as a Space Ranger Communications Officer
Communications Officer This 1965 Paul was cleaned up and had his head shrunk in acetone. I added flock hair (just like Action Man’s hair). For better articulation I gave him an AM body and dressed him in a jumpsuit, helmet and boots from a vintage AM Internationals outfit, original AM gloves and I added a tabard and armband to match the rest of the crew.
A 1980s TOMY Dingbot robot becomes a Medical Droid.
Medical Droid To make this cute little medical droid I used a 1980s TOMY Dingbot robot. I repainted him in similar colours to the other medical officers’ uniforms and I also made him some Space Ranger decals. I designed these on my computer and printed them onto clear self-adhesive film. He also comes with a little futuristic x-ray sheet. His name is Dingbot.
Space Tips Paul’s uniform - and some of the uniforms for Sindy - are based on the vintage Action Man Internationals Space Ranger uniform (1979). It makes a great basic base uniform. I then add a tabard, armbands and accessories for the Space Rangers and Communications Officers. I hand make these by digitally designing them and printing them onto transfer paper. I then iron the design onto fabric and cut it out.
I learnt the slow shrinking method via a YouTube video: Just soak a doll head in a jar of acetone and leave for a couple of days. The acetone soaks into the head, causing it to expand. Then remove the head from the acetone and leave it for another couple of days to dry out. During this period the acetone evaporates, causing the head to shrink smaller than its original size. I also use this method for shrinking the gloves and boots.
Meet the crew... There are more dolls within the Space Ranger crew including Barbie, Victoria Jane, Gem, Spectra, Lady LovelyLocks, and even a Miss Piggy!
& the station pets
Space Ranger International Sindy is here with the space station’s cats: Tim (named after the British Astronaut Tim Peake), and Félicette, a ragdoll cat, named after the first cat to ever travel into space. Above: Rosie and Brutus 40 | MAM'SELLE MAGAZINE

l a i c e p s DEAR
SINDY... Space: 1999 is a British science-fiction television programme that ran for two series from 1975 to 1977. Space: 1999 was the last production by the partnership of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and was the most expensive series produced for British television at the time.
before The great thing about collecting toys as an adult is that you can make the things you didn't have the skills to do as a child. For years I have been seeing the Sindy Buggy at toy fairs and flea markets and thinking how cool it would be to turn it into the Moon Buggy seen in Gerry Anderson's Space: 1999. In reality the Sindy Buggy doesn't look much like the Moon Buggy, apart from the fact it's bright yellow with big wheels. But when I think back to the toys I played with as a kid, a lot of those didn't look like what I wanted them to and my imagination did a lot of work.

... how can I upgrade my beach buggy?
So, the next time I saw Sindy's Buggy for cheap (£5 at a flea market), I grabbed it and set to work with my project. The simplest way to get the look I wanted was to create a new set of stickers for it that match the Moon Buggy and that's what I did. A few hours were spent in Photoshop, studying images from Space: 1999 and carefully measuring the buggy to see where I could fit in some stickers. There is no exact way of doing this, it's just a case of seeing what can be made to fit in with the shapes of the buggy. Some areas I could make look exactly like the Moon Buggy; other parts I just made designs
up that had the right look and feel to them. With a bit of trial and error and some test prints I soon had a file that was going to work and create the look I wanted. This I printed out onto some glossy sticky-backed paper, got the scissors out and set about cutting and applying the new stickers. Immediately I could see what I'd had in my mind all those years come to life. The final thing to do was add a few pieces of Lego to work as an aerial and control sticks and the Moon Buggy was done. It works great with Sindy as the driver, but even better when you swap in one of Palitoy’s vintage Space: 1999 figures.
If you'd like to make one for your own collection you can find the stickers PDF file on toypolloi.com and links to the video showing how to put it together. MAKE A SPACE CONSOLE Cathy from @jollydollyshop had a TLC Barbie Beauty Salon and was in the process of turning it into a futuristic space console for Sindy. But, she wasn’t sure how to make it ‘spacey’ enough. Luckily, she knew who to call! Her friend Dave at www.toypolloi.com known for his sci-fi toys...
Cathy had already made a start by giving the set a coat of white paint and replacing the mirror with a space image, giving the set a kind of 2001: A Space Odyssey vibe. So that would be my starting point.

There was just one final thing to add and that was a blaster to the two hooks at one end of the desk that had once held hair dryers and brushes. You never know when Sindy will need to defend herself from a mutant alien.

Dave’s tips: The first thing to do was to hide anything that made it look like a salon. So I cut some thin styrene sheet to cover the sink and work surface, and another piece to sit on the front to hide the draws, giving me a blank canvas to work on. Now for the fun part - making it look Sci-Fi. For this I just had a rummage in my box of broken toys, using parts and pieces that had interesting shapes. You don't need many pieces, just enough to add some details. I used some bits from old Star Wars vehicles, parts of toy guns, and some neck posts from vintage He-Man and the Masters of the Universe figures to create buttons and joysticks. Finally, a quick coat of primer and a coat of gloss white paint. I then designed a new image for the view screen and a futuristiclooking console panel to go over what was once the sink, plus a selection of other random panels and warning signs. Just the sort of thing you would expect to see in space.

BARCELÓ SANTS, IN BARCELONA, SPAIN The futuristic interior of this avantgarde hotel resembles a cutting-edge space station. After checking in at the ‘boarding desk,’ you might feel as though you’ve stepped into 2001: A Space Odyssey and can imagine you’re on an intergalactic trip.
THE UFO, TREEHOTEL IN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN The Treehotel complex includes an outer-space themed offering, called the UFO. This replica alien spacecraft is a treehouse that cosily accommodates up to five people and is designed to look like a flying saucer landing on Earth.

SPACE FANTASY, 1985 Space Fantasy Sindy (42012) this boxed ‘Funtime’ Sindy came with a new long bright pink hairstyle, and landed in time for the mid-eighties Space Race. Looking to the future, she wore a silver lamé toga top and a pink net skirt, with a matching pink and silver cummerbund and those elusive silver sandals.

SPACE FANTASY GALAXIE, 1985 Space Fantasy Galaxie is believed to have been sold in the international market. The main difference between the two dolls is Galaxie has a ‘traditional’ Sindy round face with fuller lips, grey sandals and a more pronounced peaked hairline. Whereas Fantasy has a paler skin tone, similar to ‘First Romance’ Sindy, a thinner mouth and silver sandals.
