SPOTLIGHT

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport Announces TSA Pre ™ is now live! Sarasota Bradenton International Airport is proud to announce the launch of the TSA Pre™. This program is an expedited screening procedure that allows preapproved travelers to go through the TSA security check point more expeditiously and seamlessly. Travelers may sign up for this convenient feature on TSA.gov. Applicants must complete an application, pay a fee of $85, and provide government I.D. and fingerprints in order to qualify. Other eligibility factors include U.S. citizens who are members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler program, Canadian citizens who are members of CBP’s NEXUS program, and/or U.S. Military members. Approved status lasts for five years. Pre-approved passengers may leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and their compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on in these select screening lanes. Passengers flying JetBlue will be required to install the mobile app My TSA on their mobile phone and to utilize the mobile boarding pass feature. The boarding pass would have a TSA Pre™ indicator embedded into the barcode that would be scanned at the security check point, allowing passengers to pass through a TSA Pre™ lane.

TSA Pre™ is available to those flying on participating airlines such as Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue and US Airways at SRQ Airport. Approved passengers can now enjoy shorter lines, more expedient transit through security check points, less removal of garments, and improved overall airport experience.

The Skyway Bridge and the Chamber's Role by Neil Spirtas, Vice President Public Policy & Small Business As a result of the Chamber's 125th Anniversary celebration starting this month, we were asked to submit some Manatee Chamber history to Chris Mead, who works for the American Chamber of Commerce Executives Association in Alexandria, Va. He is authoring a book, tentatively entitled,“The Merchants of Main Street”, that will chronicle a history of chambers of commerce, primarily in the U.S. but also globally. We provided him information on the formation of our local Chamber, starting with the Board of Trade, and significant stories from our 125 years. One of the stories we shared with Chris that particularly piqued his interest was the history of the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Perhaps he selected it for inclusion because the Travel Channel rated it #3 in its special “Top Ten Bridges” in the world feature. Or because the Skyway is considered the “flag bridge” of Florida. Perhaps it was because the of the Manatee Chamber’s significant role over the years in the bridge’s formation, construction, beautification, naming and funding. Or, maybe it was because of the importance transportation plays in the overall advancement of local/ regional commerce and community betterment.

®

Here is a synopsis of what I sent to Chris about the Skyway Bridge...

• June 21, 1926 – As reported in the Tampa Tribune, the then-named Bradenton

www.ManateeChamber.com

Chamber of Commerce was “officially sponsoring” and pushing a bridge (the first organization/chamber to take the lead) across Tampa Bay. A resolution was passed by the Chamber's Board of Directors. State highway commissioner and Chamber leader E.P. Green was involved in introducing this initiative. July 6, 1926 – The St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, as reported in the Tampa Tribune, announced its intention to cooperate on the bridge with the Bradenton Chamber of Commerce. It replied via letter that it would be (paraphrasing) “of great value to both communities and profitable to the travelling public and commerce.” The St. Pete Chamber said in its letter, “We have often thought of the great advantage of this bridge, but it has been so colossal that no one has been willing to give it more than a passing thought.” August 25, 1927 – The Bradenton Chamber reiterated its continuing support of the bridge by resolution at its board meeting. 1926-1951 – Due to WWII and the Depression, the bridge was not advertised for a construction bid until 1951. At the time, and for the preceding years, the community referred to it as the "Bay Bridge" which was originally proposed for Snead Island rather than Terra Ceia. September 6, 1954 – The Sunshine Skyway Bridge officially opened. Tolls were $1.75. In May, 1971, a second span was opened.

Manatee Chamber of Commerce January Current 2014

• January 6, 1980 – The Manatee Chamber recommended pier protection and • •

replacement of the westerly (southbound) bridge. May 9, 1980 – Freighter Summit collided with the southbound span killing 35 people, the majority of whom were on a Greyhound bus that fell into the bay. February 24, 1981 – The Manatee Chamber of Commerce's Board approved a resolution endorsing Governor Bob Graham’s decision of rebuilding the Sunshine Skyway Bridge within the projected time frame. Bob Blalock served as the Chamber’s representative on a gubernatorial-appointed, tri-county chamber advisory committee that made recommendations on the bridge alternatives. 1982 – Construction of the new bridge began. In 1986, the Manatee Chamber, the St. Petersburg Chamber and FDOT developed a landscaping plan for the bridge.

• April-May,

2003 - The Manatee Chamber took a leadership role, along with our legislative delegation and the Tampa Bay Partnership, in advocating successfully in Tallahassee for bonding over 10 years of $50 million going to each of the adjoining bridge counties from proceeds of the bridge. Funds were spent in Manatee County on the widening of S.R. 64 segments east of I-75 from Lena Road to Lorraine Road and on automated traffic management system (ATMS) light synchronization improvements at hundreds of intersections. Proceeds also went to a regional, centralized computer headquarters to manage the ATMS. • November 21, 2005 – The Sunshine Skyway Bridge was renamed the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge after the Governor. The Manatee Chamber played a role, along with STARTUPS (a regional transportation group started by the Manatee Chamber), in the name change by recommending county commissioner’s adopt the change for the signage and participated in the ceremony. We were recognized by Governor Graham for our efforts. Whether or not the story of the Skyway Bridge project was selected for inclusion in Chris Mead’s book - other chambers played key roles in the histories the Golden Gate Bridge and the Memorial Bridge over the Potomac - or whether or not this is one of our Chamber’s biggest legacies, we have been involved in numerous roadways and their advancement over the years. There are many other endeavors our Chamber has lead that are worthy of mention. And, this legacy of business leadership on transportation issues will continue as it has been a focus of this Chamber since its beginning 125 years ago.

Thank You to Our Big Bank Theory Volunteers! A very special thank you to the more than 175 volunteers who participated in the Chamber’s Big Bank Theory financial literacy program. During the program, high school seniors were engaged in a hands-on, real-life financial simulation that introduced them to the realities of being a financially responsible adult. Volunteers mentored students as they visited various stations that represented typical expenses young adults face such as housing, transportation, food, clothing, and more. Thanks to Suncoast School’s Federal Credit Union’s sponsorship and the dedication of the volunteers, more than 1,800 students learned valuable life lessons they can apply today to ensure a bright financial future. For more information about the Big Bank Theory and other education/workforce initiatives, at the Manatee Chamber, please contact Jahna Leinhauser at 941-748-4842, ext. 172.
