These are just a few examples of hazard statements. Many more exist, but as long as you take the time to read them, they will clue you in to the dangers of the chemical.

Part Four – Precautionary Statements Precautionary statements are another important part of a chemical’s label. A precautionary statement is a phrase that describes recommended measures that should be taken to minimize or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure to a hazardous chemical or improper storage or handling of that chemical. First-aid information is also included in the precautionary statement. There are four types of precautionary statements covering:

›› Prevention; ›› Response in case of accidental spillage or exposure; ›› Storage; and ›› Disposal.

Precautionary statements are linked to each standardized hazard statement and the type of hazard posed by the chemical. The core part of the precautionary statement will appear in bold print. If additional information is required, it will be in plain text. Precautionary statements may be combined to save label space and improve readability. For example:

›› “Keep away from heat,

sparks, and open flame,”

›› “Store in a well-ventilated place,” and

›› “Keep cool”

Can be combined to read:

›› “Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flame and store in a cool, well-ventilated place.”

NOTE: For preventative measures where a chemical is classified for a number of hazards and the precautionary statements are similar, the label may contain only the most stringent or rigorous preventative measure.

Review Let’s review some hazardous chemical labels and safety data sheets with their signal words, pictograms, and hazard statements. Example 1:

This is a label for ______________________. Its signal word is ______________. Its pictogram is ____________ , which means it’s ____________. Its hazard statement is ____________________________________. And its precautionary statement is ___________________________ ______________________________________________________.
