PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Hello everyone!

he start of the school year has come and although it does look a little different, our Key Club is still going on strong! We started to have biweekly meetings via Microsoft Teams with our first meeting on August 26. It was so lovely to see all of you guys there because I know that you guys will make this year amazing! This is the start of something wonderful, despite what is happening around us. By overcoming these challenges our club has proved our resilience and commitment to service, find ways to help out the community in a safer manner. I can't wait to see where this leads us! Yours in Service,

Uyen Nguyen

Necessary Necessary Adaptations Adaptations By: Uyen Nguyen, President

Going back to school to many is dreadful. Many want to keep living their best life basking in the light of Summer and a stress free environment. However, this summer and school year is completely different due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

School districts such as mine, Mansfield ISD, have come up with many precautionary actions that will be able to keep the staff and students safe. One such action is the banning of in-person meetings until further notice. This is a huge change since in-person meetings allow the board members to easily interact and maintain a good relationship with the members and allow for recruitment opportunities to be open. Despite this ban though, the board members and I have come up with solutions in order to have a safe and meaningful meeting.

One such change the Mansfield Summit Key Club has adapted is by hosting bi-weekly meetings on Microsoft Teams. This allows both virtual and in-person students to attend and by having our meetings at 4pm instead of right afterschool, it allows the virtual students to take a breather from their screen. Our teams meetings will start off with music and a fun short bonding activity such as Kahoot to loosen up the tension and get more members to interact. Teams meetings will be recorded in case any member had missed it, it will be available still to them after

the meeting.

Another change being implemented is the use in a Canvas Course, run by myself (President). This course will allow members to easily turn in their hours. With our volunteering sheet posted, all the members have to do is print it, fill it out and turn it in every month. By doing this, it allows a limited person-to-person contact which will make the collection of hours safe and productive. The health of our members and the board will always come first before anything else. Since meetings will be recorded, the Canvas course allows members who have missed our meeting to access it with no problems and see what they have missed. Important volunteering opportunities, slideshows, and other various information that can’t be easily displayed Remind 101 can be easily accessed on Canvas.

When When Life Life gives gives You You COVID COVID By: Hayden Stegall, Webmaster

For six long months we’ve been shut away, having despair filled day after day,But worry not! Have no more fear, no more weeks of sobbing: Summit Key Club is here!

While school started up a bit like a chainsaw filled with saltwater, we were ready to start the year strong with our first meeting on August 26th at 4:00. We’re not able to meet in person yet, so we adapted to a different environment by using Microsoft Teams to hold our meetings virtually. It was difficult to choose the platform to use for holding our first meeting as there are many companies who all provide group video chats for cheap or even free. Thankfully though, we unknowingly picked one of the worst ones under the sun to start our year off right! Joking aside, the meeting started off pretty well as almost everyone was able to get in on time and we had over 50 people in attendance. Sadly, this was the peak of the meeting. Our high hopes for our first meeting were quickly crushed when we realized that out of the 50 members that joined the call, only about 3 or 4 were new freshmen and everyone else was a returning member. This meant that our club shrank going into the new year. Technical difficulties was the name of our next

10

tribulation as the board had made a beautiful Google Slides presentation to give information to our members about how the

iyear was going to work which absolutely refused to be shown. The entirety of the club had to wait while our poor advisor tried and failed over and over to get the slideshow working. The absolute worst part though, was the unbearable silence. There was no indistinct chatter to fill the room, no bad jokes being told with pity laughs from the younger members, no yelling of “NOOO!” as someone lost in a card game. Only sad, disheartening quiet. And, in perfectly timed pathetic fallacy, it started to rain as our meeting crashed and burned. Now one might think: “Oh no! Surely Summit Key Club is done for after this incident.” To which we say “not even close.” Every sad story ends with a glimmer of hope and us Key Clubbers are nothing if not hopelessly optimistic… Flash forward to the next Sunday the 30th, after our meeting we thought that our weekly service event allies in youth development would be in poor attendance because of our Titanic of a meeting that was a few days before.

However, we were shocked that not only did we break the summer record for most people attending Allies that day.
