PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Hello everyone!

This has been a great month for Key Club and its thanks to all of you loyal members coming to meetings, PB&J’s and of course doing a whole bunch of volunteering. This month was highlighted by our Valentine’s day social and bake sale. We were able to raise close to four hundred dollars for our trip to LEDCON this year, and we are so close to getting to go. With only two months I hope to finish this year off great and I am glad to say that next year should be just as good if not better with our new board members that we elected this month! We’re nearing the end now and for us, seniors its almost the end of our high school and Key Club journey, but let’s make sure to remember that throughout all this stress and pressure it’s important to be thankful and give back!

Yours in Service,

Gavin Wilson

FUN-draising & & FUN-draising LEDCON!! LEDCON!! By: Thomas Tran, Senior Class Rep

It’s February, LEDCON is approaching quickly and our club has been making preparations. We have been preparing for all the different events that our club will be participating in at LEDCON and have been raising funds to cover the costs. Our club has been raising money by doing fundraisers, going out to promote our club and asking people for donations. Our club has been fundraising the entire year, from garage sales in the summer to selling chocolate around our school and bake sales. In the Summer of 2019, our club held a garage sale at one of our board members’ homes and was able to receive donations of various different items and we opened it up to the community to come by and buy all the different items. We also had two different bake sales this year during the month of October on Halloween and one in February on Valentine’s day. Our club also decided to fundraise by selling World’s Finest Chocolate around our school and community. We were able to raise a lot of money this year from various different fundraising ideas and we have been able to use some of what we’ve raised in order to provide sufficient funds for LEDCON. Our club has also gone out to promote our club and asked different organizations to help sponsor or trip to LEDCON. We

6

asked the Kiwanis Club of Mansfield for donations and they were

gracious enough to provide $1000 to cover part of our costs and alleviate some of the financial burden that would otherwise be placed on our club. Our club is grateful to the Kiwanis club for being able to help our club go to LEDCON. We have also asked our school if they would be able to help alleviate some of the cost for LEDCON. Our club has also had various different socials throughout the year to promote our club and we have asked for donations from the people that attended. We held a water balloon social over the summer and were able to receive some donations from all the people that were able to attend. From all of our different fundraising events and generous donors we have been able to reduce our cost from each of the members that are attending LEDCON to about $150. We are all excited to attend LEDCON in April and are excitedly preparing and getting ready for our new board to take over.

Communication is KEY! By: Gavin Wilson, President

To create a connection with the Key Club members, officers must communicate and put in effort into wanting to know about the individual member. This year, the officers have done several things in order to create a strong bond between both members and officers. One custom that is always done during the beginning meetings is ringing the Key Club bell. When an individual has been chosen, they are to introduce themselves by stating their name, current grade level, and a fun fact. The officers encourage this custom because we want to know more about the members, even if it’s a little. There are obviously too many people in the organization so by implementing this tradition, it’s easier for the members. By allowing members to present themselves, it allows them to become relaxed around other people which in turn allows the officers to easily approach them. Personally, as an officer this year, I had many opportunities to connect with people thanks to this custom. I found many people within the club that has the same or similar interests as I do and it made building friendships easier for me. Another way the officers tried to build a connection with the members is by hosting various socials in school and outside of

10

school. This year, the school’s club has held quite a few gatherings.

Sometimes, it was with food, working on a project together, playing a game of Kahoot or a mix of everything! Whatever the social may consist of, both the board officers and club members gather together in one spot. Through these gatherings, differences between an individual with a leadership position or one that doesn’t are placed aside. The main focus of hosting socials is to have fun together and with each other which is the start of new friendships. Last, but not least, one of the most important ways to connect with members is simply by talking. I had found myself to be very timid when I try to befriend someone I do not know, even though I’m an officer. But once I built enough courage and confidence into speaking, I realize that talking or communicating with others is possibly the best way to ignite a connection. In other words, while hosting socials and allowing the members to give the club a short presentation of themselves is a nice way to go, approaching someone and talking to them personally is the best way to learn about them and become friends.
