Mansfield Summit Key Club members, The fall season is upon us in full force to the point it feels like winter. Everyone should prepare to bundle up because your club officers are planning some exciting events! October was a very fun month and I am so proud of everyone investing their time in helping the community and being involved with the club. This year’s Halloween season is the best moment I ever had thus far. Our Spooky Smores Night and Trick -or-Treat for UNICEF was a success, all thanks to the club board members and the strong support of our members. Keep serving the community, guys! #the grind never stops Yours in Service,
Alice Nguyen SHS Key Club President

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I last wrote an Editor’s Note but I just want to say how extremely proud I am of our club, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE WE MADE IT TO TOP 25! Sadly with this being my 7th issue, it means that we’re more than halfway done with this Key Club term, and I am absolutely shocked by how fast time has passed while I’ve been an officer. With that being said, October was an extremely fun month and I am so excited to show you guys my newsletter so that we can all relive these moments! In Love & Service,
Patricia Rojas SHS Key Club Editor

Brianna Dao, Vice President As the seasons start to change and the cool breeze begins to lightly smack us in the face, the only thing on my mind is putting my hands against a warm fire and the orange and yellow leafs slowly beginning to pile along the sides of the bare concrete road. With the atmosphere around us changing, the comfort foods I crave on a cold breezy night tend to change as well. Craving a festive and fall like activity, and it just so happens that my club was hosting one of my favorite family bonding activities; s’mores night. With the burning fire up against the tips of your fingers as you roast a marshmallow laughing along with friends and families; it’s one of the most precious things you could ever experience. Everyone getting along and boisterously laughing huddling around a small campfire, it seems as if everything is almost perfect and the setting of a movie is at the end of it’s climax. S’mores is one of the best fall time desserts out there; where the marshmallows are toasted over an open flame, sandwiched between a piece of chocolate and two crisp graham crackers. On the night of this event, our officers didn’t expect many people show besides from our club; little did we know some fellow key clubbers from a different school within our school district would show up on a cold windy night to support us and make a plethora amount of s’mores! It was extremely awkward and surprising at first to see all of these unfamiliar faces, but as the night went along we all bonded over the same music, movies, and TV shows while crowding around a small open flame. Although we all invest ourselves in different things, around this fire, we were all similar and alike in multiple aspects. Overall, s’mores night is one of my favorite things that my club does just because it’s a time of bonding and getting to know one another; while Key Club is every volunteer based, it’s so great to know that when you get a chance to bond with people you aren’t always
10
surrounded by, you have a lot in common with them. While my club ended up huddling over a small fireplace at park and crowding into my car to receive heat, we all had a chance to rewind, relax, and just enjoy the moment of life as it is.

Meet October’s
Member of the Month:
She is the SHS Key Clubber who raised the most money for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! Hi! I’m Sharlene Garcia! I’m a sophomore and one of the newest members of Key Club! Recently in October, there was a fundraising event for UNICEF which would help eliminate maternal neonatal-tetanus that occurs to infants. It was a great project that would help impact lives, and I wanted to try and help out. I reached out to family, friends, and even some people I haven’t met before to help and donate. With their kindness and generosity, the donations were beyond my expectations! Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I’m glad I was involved.

What is Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF: Today, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is the longest running youth engagement campaign in America and has raised nearly $177 million to help UNICEF provide children with health care, nutrition, clean water, education, emergency relief and more. Originating as a grassroots campaign after World War II, Trick-orTreat for UNICEF has now evolved into a month-long celebration of the power of Kids Helping KidsÂŽ. Throughout the month of October, kids and families across the country are encouraged to #bescarygood and add purpose to Halloween by collecting lifesaving donations for UNICEF.

went a little like this…”
Alice Nguyen, President
What was the moment or event that made you fall in love with Key Club? It is very common for people to fall in love with another person or an animal, but have you ever fell in love with something intangible? Do you ever love the “act of doing” instead of the “state of being”? Key Club – “an international, student-led organization” – is an organization that touches hearts from around the world, including mine. Sometimes, it may take a while to realize what’s in front of you and once it happens, you’ll only fall deeper. Finishing my senior year of high school, I am proud to say that I have contributed all four years being a Key Clubber, from the beginning to the end. During one point of my Key Club career, if I did not receive the opportunity to become an officer, I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to experience and develop a hard-driven passion and fall in love with the organization. I started my first two years being an active member who consistently volunteered during her free time. Although I enjoyed being a part of the
10
wonderful organization, there were times I had pushed it to the side to focus on my academics and social outings. At the time, Key Club wasn’t something I would willingly devote to because I had other priorities and had no desire or was not driven enough to make changes to the club for the members. Thanks to Former Lieutenant Governor of Division 39 South and Former International Trustee Tiffany Hang, my life took a slight turn for the better and I wouldn’t trade it up for anything. All it took was an open opportunity, asking and then the next thing I knew, I was the club’s 2016-2017 Reporting Secretary and as President the following year. Once I took an office position was the moment I fell in love with Key Club. There was definitely a lot more to Key Club than just volunteering and it opened up my eyes to whole new perspective. From attending to Kiwanis meetings to participating in the annual District Convention, I got a chance to experience things that many Key Clubbers – unfortunately – can’t. For two years, I was given the responsibility to record my club’s activity, check the officers’ standing positions, and host the many meetings and events for the club. All of which made my Key Club life a lot more interesting and fun. In other words, I got to see the behind the scenes of how things really work. While Key Club may not be a life-changing opportunity for some, it is for me. While it is saddening and disappointing that I realized the importance of Key Club after becoming an officer, I am grateful for all the experiences I was able to partake in and witness. With that being said, Key Club has made a huge impact on me. I will forever cherish all the greatness and memories that it brought and will proudly tell anyone that my first love was something intangible.
