letter Hello Summit Key Clubbers, I am so proud of every single person who has been able to come out to one of our meetings, socials or even PB&J. We’ve had great turnout time after time and i can tell that this will be a great school year for Key Club. I would like to encourage everyone to continue to come to our meetings and go out and serve! We have so many upcoming events that there’s plenty you can do to help better your community. Again, I would like to thank everyone for helping us make this year special. Yours in service,

START THE YEAR AND VOLUNTEER Thomas Tran, Senior Class Representative

School is back and class has started. However, summer isn’t that far behind us and now that it’s over we can think back on what we did over the Summer and how Key Club made an impact. It included many different service opportunities that I was able to be a part of and had a big influence on my summer. Key Club was a big part of my Summer, it included many activities that help improve our community and these are only a few. The Summer started off with Feed the Kids which is a Kiwanis sponsored volunteer event to help feed children in the Mansfield area where volunteers pack bags with enough food for each meal for a whole week. We also had our water balloon social where we invited the community to come to a park to throw water balloons in order to try and cool off in the heat of summer. Our Region also had a Regional Training Conference where our very own treasurer, Amy Tran, taught the other treasurers in the region the expectations of being a treasurer in Key Club. Each board member was able to learn about the different aspects of their jobs and even were able to play hide and seek around the school. We had many more different volunteering events in the summer including Allies In Youth Development where we pack boxes filled with clothes and other necessities that will be sent around the world to

help those in need. There was also Alex’s Lemonade Stand which our club fundraises for every year in order to help support cancer research and awareness to cure childhood cancer. Our goal was to make around $1200 and we were able to go above our goal and make a total of $1330. I had an amazing summer filled with many more different events that Key Club was a part of, it sets up a plan for the future and has made an impact on how I can better help my community. Our club had our first meeting of the year on August 21 and we had an amazing turnout of over 80 people. We provided food and had a social where we painted rocks that the members could either keep or give it to the club to leave in parks for a service project that Summit is planning on doing every other week. Summit plans on going to different parks every other Tuesday and cleaning up to make the parks in our community cleaner, we would leave a rock there in order to display that we have been there. We also have planned to carry over our PB&J project from last year where every other Wednesday our club will make hundreds of sandwiches that will be delivered to a homeless shelter. Our second meeting we got members involved by playing a kahoot which the members really seemed to enjoy. We hope to continue to have consistent attendance and further expand our club by encouraging students to join. Key Club is an amazing thing, not only is it about community service and volunteering it’s about more than that. It’s about building a place where people can be comfortable and it’s somewhere people can go when they have nowhere else and helping others who need our help through service.

PAINTING INTO THE NEW YEAR! Uyen Nguyen, Vice President

12

August is the back to school season, where everyone is in a frenzy to get school supplies and prepare for the new year. Summit Key Club was also very busy while planning our first social and meeting of the new year. We decided to paint rocks because painting is a calming and fun distraction from the hectic back to school season. We prepared for this exciting social with a board meeting that planned out our schedule for the day and what we need to prepare, for example we needed to get food, the rocks, paintbrushes and paint, napkins, drinks and the powerpoint presentation. We also made posters that depicted the fun activities that would take place with drawings of paint brushes, rocks and pizza along with the date and location of the event. When the day came, many students had come to the social and we were slightly worried if there were going to be enough food, but it turns out there was plenty left! Since the projector was giving us some trouble, we decided to go ahead and let the members grab some

food and eat. By that time, the projector was working again and we went through the power point, introducing Key Cub and its purpose, the requirements to be in the club as well as many volunteering opportunities for the upcoming month. After that we passed out rocks and distributed the paint and paintbrushes and let the members release their creativity. Some people were so artistic and drew out album covers, sunsets, and even Bob Ross paintings. Everyone had so much fun painting the rocks and chatting with one another that some people even went back for more rocks to paint. In the end, we planned on bringing these rocks to the Mansfield parks during one of our park clean ups and just leave them around because it is something fun the area of Mansfield does to the parks. This was an important event because it allowed the exposure of Key Club to new members and meet new friends and a great bonding experience. I'm very happy with the results we got from this social, and it was such a fun one to plan and experience! Next year, I will definitely do something along the lines of painting rocks.

Hello Key Clubbers! I am very overwhelmed this month with the start of of Key Club, my classes, and band. I’m running on very little sleep and too much caffeine, but I push on! I hope y’all are having a better back to school experience than I am though! Anyways, I’m glad to be back. Much like the presidents letter, this note is going to be very brief. I just want to say that I’m excited for this school year, and I can’t wait to see what we do!

In Love and Service,

Alyssa Brown
