letter Hi There! I just can’t believe that December has already come to an end, this past month was so full of holiday themed service, socials & events that to me it felt like it was over in the blink of an eye. December has been by far one of my favorite Key Club months because of events such as the Kiwanis FaLaLaLa 5K, the MISD Toys for Tots Drive, our Adopt an Angel Project & much much more! Thanks to all of those who volunteered despite the chilly weather, we couldn’t have done any of it without your help! Also make sure to stay tuned for all thats to come this January because the officers and I have several things planned!! You guys are the best & I wish you the happiest of holidays :) In Love and Service,

LONG DECEMBER NIGHTS Lacey Thomas, Webmaster

Get ready to grab your hats and gloves and to start making hot cocoa because December is here! It has been very cold here in Texas this year, although it still warms up some days because of its unpredictableness. We probably won’t get snow but we will still get to enjoy the long winter nights, the beautiful sky, and some yummy hot cocoa. For most people it is too cold to go outside, but fortunately for the world, Key Club International has just the kind of members that would say, “Hey, today’s a good day to change the world.” But the question is, what services can be done in these chilly times? The dropping temperatures signify the perfect time to host a coat drive for the financially challenged and homeless families in your era. Perhaps you can host your club can host your own coat drive, or partner with an 10 organization to distribute the coats that your Key Clubbers collect. The holiday season is also approaching, and you

will likely see volunteers at the corners of supermarkets and department stores ringing their little bells with gleaming smiles prodding for donations. Your members could be those smiling faces by signing up with the Salvation Army to volunteer for a few hours, usually around four. As most people know, MISD hosts an annual Toys for Tots. Many organizations, like Key Club, volunteer here every year to help serve the community and give toys to children in need. This year our Toys for Tots was very successful and we raised more than 27,000 toys. A bonus step to all of these service opportunities is to open the projects to students outside of Key Club, such as inviting other organizations to join. The more participation at each event, the better the effect on the good of society. How do these service opportunities relate to the December sky? Imagine. A homeless child wearing one of your old jackets, looking confidently at the scarlet streaks up in the frosty atmosphere, thankful for the warmth you have provided. You, standing at the corner of a local Wal-Mart ringing the little bell, admiring the way the bucket of donations gleams like the last rays of sunset. Two siblings riding bicycles from the Salvation Army under a hazy pink sky. There are so many ways we can make a difference this month, and it all starts with the will to serve.

COLLECTING TOYS AND SPENDING TIME WITH THE TOTS Patricia Rojas, President

14

Every year our club has the honor of participating in the Mansfield ISD Toys for Tots Community Drive, which is one of the largest toy drives in the entire state. The whole month leading up to the event, our club helped collect toys around our school so that we could later donate them to the event. Mansfield Summit High School was able to collect about 2,000 toys and as a whole the Mansfield ISD community donated more than 27,000 toys and nearly $7,000 for children who are less fortunate. Helping children have a special Christmas is a very heartwarming thing to do, but one of the other great parts about this event is that we also get to interact with the kids within the district while also helping provide gifts for those in need. This year, our Key Club teamed up with some organizations across campus to represent Mansfield Summit HS at the

arts and crafts table. At this table Key Clubbers helped kids make a variety of different crafts such as: Christmas stockings, Christmas trees, wreaths, snowmen, Santa clauses, reindeer and more! Each craft consisted of sticky foam that needed to be cut out and placed, so the volunteers were assisting the kids as they assembled their unique holiday pieces. Since there were so many small parts along with so many small children involved, things could've gotten messy really fast but our Key Clubbers managed to keep it all under control in a nice and neat manner. In addition to making cute holiday decorations, our Key Clubbers who also participate in theatre helped make this event even more special by taking on the roles of Santa’s little helpers. These volunteers spent their entire night spreading holiday cheer as they dressed up and pretended to be elves from the North Pole. Our elves also helped lead the holiday parade, as well as pack the trucks with donated toys and took pictures with several of the children who were at the event. The annual Toys for Tots drive is something that our club looks forward to participating in every year because of not only how fun it is to spend time with the kids but also because of how much it helps our community. All of the toys that were collected for the drive by the school district are going back to kids in our very own city, so it is great to know that we were able to help out our local children during this very special Christmas.

December is one of my favorite months Key Club wise because of the Adopt an Angel program. I love seeing members bring in gift after gift, and then working together to wrap them. Unfortunately, I cannot wrap presents to save my life, so during our gift wrapping social, I made sure to keep the Christmas songs a-rolling! I’m very excited for January because our board has many events planned. Then before we know it it’ll be DCON! This year will be my first year attending, as last year I had a conflict that prevented me from going :( But I digress. Anyways, I hope that ya’ll have had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! In Love and Service,

Alyssa Brown
