letter Hi There Everyone!! I know that February is only a couple days shorter than the rest of the months but I swear it flew back in the blink of an eye. My favorite part of the month was our Bake Sale! It was our last fundraiser before we finalized our DCON payments, and it couldn't have gone any better. So many thanks to all the members that helped out by donating goods and supporting us by buying items.

still

Everyday we’re getting closer and closer to DCON, and it’s such a bittersweet feeling. I absolutely can’t wait for all the fun that awaits us, but I’m also sad for the ending if my term as President. BUT, all sad things aside, we’ve still got 8 weeks left of the 20182019 Key Club term, so keep the volunteering up so we can end this term on a good note!

Patricia Rojas

PEERS AND VOLUNTEERS Sharlene Garcia, Secretary Instead of finding a small space to study after school, the lecture hall doors were opened to a different kind of setting. It was a place not so quiet at, after all, a small club growing louder about how caring is a way of life. Despite my shy nature and hermit-like lifestyle, I was caught up in all the exciting activities and I haven't looked back since. Key Club changed my closeminded view of service and helped me learn to be a part of something bigger, better, and greater than I ever imagined. My journey through volunteering started with simple acts of service, and trust me, it can go a long way. For example, raising small amounts of money for UNICEF grew to a tremendous amount, and also providing teachers cards of gratitude eventually grew to support charitable acts of service like the non-profit organization, Feed the Kids. I never forgot how many friends 10 and memories I’ve made throughout my sophomore year.

Then everything changed during my junior year. My efforts, with the help of others, have moved me up to become a reporting secretary of my school's club. With enough training from my wonderful predecessor, eventually, I learned what it took to help run it changed my view about the club in general. Then after several more duties and spending more time helping the community, I was a Lieutenant Governor-Elect, this position truly shaped my perspective in an entirely unique turn. Planning, promoting, and providing members volunteering opportunities while maintaining a spot in top 25 of all of Oklahoma and Texas for my club made a huge difference in seeing the bigger picture about the entire district. The sheer amount of responsibility to oversee more than one club and be part of two states overwhelmed me, but I stayed grounded to what lead me to this moment in my life. Time doesn't move on but we as people do. Regardless of how my academic journey or my recent leadership positions has shaped me up until now, service left an even bigger impacted on my heart. Through each moment of volunteering, I did it for the community returned to me in smiles and priceless life lessons. It taught me the value of friendship, compassion, patience, growth, leadership, and most importantly, how caring can be a way of life. Life leads people towards many paths, and I've never been happier to come across this one.

READY TO BOOGIE! Lacey Thomas, Webmaster

DCON is right around the corner and is coming quicker than you think. I’m so ready to get groovy and go to DCON and celebrate our 70 years of service! This will be my second year going to DCON and I am very excited. Our Key Club has been preparing for DCON by holding many different fundraisers to help lower the cost. These fundraisers helped us save about $65 compared to last year. A few of the fundraisers we held was a Super Smash Bros tournament, bake sale, and garage sale. We did not only raise a lot of money for DCON but also had so much fun doing all of the fundraisers. The Smash Bros tournament that we had was held in the stage in our cafeteria. It was a smashing success. Pun intended. Many students enjoyed getting to play during lunches and they had so much fun. Some of the students even got really into it and were getting serious. That was just one of our many amazing fundraisers. One of our other fundraisers

was a garage sale at a fellow officers home. This is our third time holding a garage sale and each time has been successful so we decided to do it again. We all collected items from each of our homes and brought them to sell for the garage sale. All of us woke up early Saturday morning and got to selling. Within the first few hours we already made a good sum of money. It was really cold that day but we found our own fun unique ways to stay warm. Our last and most recent fundraiser was our bake sale. My fellow officers and I each made different sweets and treats to sell at our school. Some of the treats that we made included chocolate covered pretzels, brownies, cupcakes, cake pops, and many more delicious desserts. The students and faculty really enjoyed them and we enjoyed making them. Everything was under three dollars so it was affordable for students which meant certain treats selling out very quickly. Summit Key Club has done so much to raise money for DCON. All of the fundraisers that we have done were so much fun and we all enjoyed raising money for our Key club. DCON may not be here for another two months but I’m already so excited and glad that we have raised enough money to lower the prices for this year. I know that I am already preparing and am ready to start my DCON shopping and packing. It’s not close but I do hope the time flies by so we can get go to DCON and get groovy!

Wow...this is really my second to last newsletter huh? It’s actually pretty sad, now that I think about it. I have so many fond memories associated with this newsletter. Not just with making it, but being able to relive all these memories as I go through countless pictures and articles. Although it’s been a lot of work to maintain the image that Patricia created last year, I never once regretted doing it. I hope that maybe future editors of the Summit Key Club can look over this and find inspiration through whatever newsletter brings them. In Love and Service,

Alyssa Brown
