letter Hi There Key Clubbers!! The first month of 2019 has sadly come to a close, but we had some pretty exciting things happen! For starters, our club received $1,032 from the YOF Grant so that we can continue doing the PB&J Project throughout the next school year! We’ve had great success with the current PB&J Project, and I’m so happy that our club gets to continue doing such an amazing project. Additionally, thanks to all those that participated in our Super Smash Bros Tournment! This fundraiser was helping us prepare for DCON, and it was a good success! January treated us well, but I absolutely can’t wait for all of the other amazing things to come. Thanks for staying active members despite the cold weather & busy schedules, I hope to see y’all soon :)

STARTING THE NEW YEAR RIGHT Nasim Muhammad, Historian
The month of January started off with the weekly events of Feed the Kids and PB&J, two events that have a direct impact upon the Mansfield community. As you sit at the bread, peanut butter, jelly or the bagging station you pass down the it down to the next station where it eventually makes it to the box, where it will be transported to the homeless people that need it. Although it takes around 20 minutes, the impact is great for these people. As we pack the bags full of PB&J, the realization of how lucky I am to have food at my disposal and a roof over my head comes to light. Participating in these events is a gratifying experience to me and the people involved as we are able to help our community in this grand gesture. Aside from Feed the Kids and PB&J, the Summit Key Club Just had a garage sale selling clothing and different types of items such as toys and books. In 10 the end, we raised around 100 dollars. After the garage sale was over we took the remaining items and took
them to Goodwill. We not only raised tons of money for DCON, but we had tons of fun in the process. Starting at the end of January, Key Club brought and new method of bringing in students and allowing them to participate, even without being a member. We did this through the universal liking of Super Smash Bros. This event occurred throughout the lunches in the commons area, generating excitement and competition as multiple students gathered around to smash each other in Smash. And soon we’ll be having a bake sale, and this will also get non members involved with Key Club. Both the bake sale and the super smash brings out the summit love carried with the Summit Jags. It's important to spread a feeling of love and welcomeness not just in the Key Club community, but in throughout our school as well. Starting the new year off with a good start, Key Club opens its arms to both its community and its school. Key Club is here to not only give to those in need, but also to be a known place in which any student of Summit can come and seek action through the community. Key Club is an organization that represents a body of people that can gather together to achieve a goal and build relationships on the way.

MY PASSION OF VOLUNTEERING Bushra Khaliq, Senior Class Rep. Volunteering is the foundation of Key Club. The action of going out to help others and taking the initiative to serve others before yourself is not only humble, but also enlightening. This is why volunteering is important to me. As I was developing my identity, goals, and wants in life, I never truly felt like I was living until I joined Key Club and experienced the many hours of organizing clothes, food pantries, conducting service projects, and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless. These experiences may seem meaningless from the exterior, but internally it brings satisfaction, happiness, and awareness. It showed a new perspective of the world and made me feel human. I never noticed how much I had to be grateful for until I saw the children, family, and the homeless who needed help getting basic needs.

There are many service projects and events such as Peanut Butter and Jelly,
Adopt an Angel, and Mission Arlington. Our service project, the Peanut Butter and Jelly Project consists of all our members meeting every other Wednesday in the school cafeteria. The project was created to help make meals for the homeless in our area. Seeing many people go out of their way to help others spreads a positive and understanding environment. I felt happier knowing that I was devoting my time to help others before myself. The other project we did was Adopt-a-Child, in which we bought items and necessities for two girls and their parents. It was specifically for Christmas and helped them have a fun and jolly time even though they didn’t have the money to buy themselves gifts. We as a club pitched in our efforts to get them the most we could and this made me feel satisfied and happy, to know that I’m making someone’s day brighter is the only payment I needed. Another event we volunteer at every Wednesday is Feed the Kids. At feed the kids we pack bags of food for students who do not have easy access to food in the Mansfield Independent School District. This event happens all year round. It occurs every summer and school year. Key Club is a big part of this event and the experience gives me a network of friends and positivity. Over all, volunteering taught me many things, whether it was being selfless or always being there for others. I enjoyed the many hours of it and it connected me to a world of friends I never thought I would meet. I also developed my sense of purpose and individuality through volunteering.

After I proofread the newsletter, I went back to the front cover and realized that the year was still 2018. Good thing I caught it before I published this! Anyways, January was a huge success for the Summit Key Club. Our Smash Bros Tournament and our garage sale both brought in a lot of money, and with that money we can make DCON prices lower. Plus, our fundraisers are super fun! And 2018 in itself was also very successful for us. I’m very proud of us being able to start the PB&J project. I know Patricia and Gavin worked extremely hard behind the scenes to give us that. Here’s to a great New Year with more life changing projects! In Love and Service,
Alyssa Brown
