letter Hi there everyone!!

I can’t believe this is my last President’s Letter, it feels like just yesterday I was beginning my term and now it’s finally come to and end. I’m so thankful for all of the wonderful people I have been able to meet through Key Club and I can’t thank y’all enough for helping make this such a successful year. It’s saddening to know that my time here is coming to an end but I know for a fact that y’all will be in good hands under Gavin’s Presidency especially with the help of the new board :) Thanks again for all of the memories & I cant wait to hear all the amazing things you guys will do in the coming year!!

COMING TO A CLOSE Reem Saeed, Service Coordinator As the year starts to slow down our Key Club year is starting to come to an end. Although the Key Club year is getting close to an end it is still packed full of fun. This month we had a great number of fun elementary school events. In my opinion elementary schools are the best place to volunteer. Elementary school events are an amazing way to get volunteer hours as they give you an opportunity to have fun while helping out little kids. March was packed with joyful children. An example of some events we did was Literacy and math nights for Charlotte Anderson Elementary and Glenn Harmon Elementary. At these literacy and math nights they have different stations where they play math and reading related games to win books and prizes. Our volunteers would help the little ones and make sure the game right and 10 that everyone had a fair chance to

kids get excited about winning free books. Although there were some fun games i prefer the arts and crafts stations. The arts and crafts stations are really fun because you get to see how created these kids minds are. Along with watching them make all sorts of crafts you also get to make some yourself. Being around all these cheerful children unleashes your inner child, and there is not anything wrong with a little playtime Another event that our school was honored to participate in is the district Math Pentathlon at Timberview High School. The Math Pentathlon is a program of interactive problemsolving games. When you go to volunteer at a Math Pentathlon you are either a runner or a scorer. The runners run around collecting score sheets from contestants to the scorers. The scorers take in the hundreds of score sheets and evaluate their score. Although it sounds quite boring it is actually really intriguing as you get to see how much hard work these little kids put in. Even when they don’t get the score they want they still stay positive and smiling Even though the key club year is coming to a close there is always another year right behind it and we should learn from these children and focus on now. These children taught me to only care about what was happening in the present, not to stress about what comes next, what have they taught you?

A Sneak Peek of What’s to Come at DCON!!!!!

PREPARING OUR WAY TO DCON! Amy Tran, Treasurer Having DCON right around the corner, our club has been preparing for this very exciting trip since the very beginning of our 20182019 Key Club term. Some tasks that we have been primarily focusing on would consist of numerous fundraisers, interviews for our elect officers, and most importantly, working on contests for DCON. All of this preparation has been talked about for a very long time but since the convention is approaching, much of our officer’s time and dedication has been put into hopefully receiving awards, scholarships, and most importantly making it to the top 25 Key Clubs in the T-O District. To start off, one main concern/priority for us when it comes to DCON are financial costs and ways to withdraw the least amount of money in our bank. As Mansfield Summit Key Club’s Treasurer, I worked closely together with our President, Vice President, and Advisors to come up with a spreadsheet

planning out how much money we should raise and how much each member would have to pay if the goal is reached. After a couple of meetings with the President, Patricia Rojas, the two of us eventually came up with a spreadsheet that displayed each and every cost. Such as the registration fee, rooms, Kiwanis support, and fundraising profit. Thankfully, after the support of our advisors and school, our club got the chance to hold multiple fundraisers such as bake sales, garage sales, and Smash Bros tournaments to in the end raise a total of over a thousand dollars! All of this work and dedication from our officers comes to show that each and every one of us care very much about DCON to ensure that we both benefit ourselves (in terms of costs) and we have the chance to promote Key Club and everything that makes it great. And in comparison to the amount that we had to pay for last years DCON, instead of paying $175 per attendee, this year each member only had to pay $110; saving each person $65. In addition to raising money, our board has also taken into account scholarship opportunities for our seniors and contests that we hopefully can place in. Some contests that particularly caught our eye (thanks to the resourceful Code for Contests and Awards pdf) would be the Club T-Shirt Award, Club Poster Award (NonDigital), Club Video Award, Traditional Scrapbook Contest, and countless of others. However, while winning contests and such are rewarding, what’s more important is having fun on this wonderful convention, getting the chance to interact with all the other Key Clubs, and last but not least, learning more about what Key Club is and all that we as students can do to benefit our community.

For some reason I wrote my last editor’s note like it was my last, so I’m kind of out of ideas. The main thing I want to say is that I’m so glad I got the chance to be the editor this year. It’s taught me a lot, not just on how to make these newsletters, but about everyone in Key Club itself. With every article I read and edit I learn a little more about each officer. Every picture I go through shows me a little more of a person. It’s strange how much you can learn about people through pictures like that. Maybe next year I’ll have the opportunity to branch out and learn more about people from other schools!

In Love and Service,

Alyssa Brown
