letter Hello everyone, With roughly a month behind us of this new exciting term, I’d like to give a warm welcome to summer and a very happy goodbye to the school year. I would like to shout out our members of the year that we announced at our banquet that we hosted in the month of May. Congratulations to Nathen Cabero and Greta Gonzales for being our members of the year for the 2018-2019 Key Club year. However, with the end of the school year does not bring the end of our Key Club activities. In fact, the summer is one of the most fun and active times of the entire Key Club year. In the coming months, every Key Clubber will get the chance to attend socials from schools all over our district. Summit has multiple plans in the works to make sure that your summer is full of fun and of course, volunteering. One of these such events that we have coming up is our water balloon fight that will take place on Friday, May 21st. We hope to see you all as much as possible over the course of the summer!

Yours In Service,

4

Gavin Wilson

K IS FOR KIND Daisy Hernandez, Secretary After having ended the 2018-2019 school year well, Summit Key Club is excited to continue serving our community into the summer. We are going to continue doing Alex’s Lemonade Stand and Feed the Kids as well as brainstorming new ways to increase membership and participation during the school year. I am also excited to partake in various socials during the summer, such as the water balloon fight. The last social of the school year, the pie in the face social, was especially fun and really helped all of us to kick off a great summer of service that will continue into the 2019-2020 school year. An exciting addition to our board is the Social Coordinator position, currently held by Grace Mutterer, who will aim to make Key Club for all our members more interactive and sociable. For example, our board 10 has discussed fun ways to increase

meeting attendance during the school year, such as with games and icebreakers after the PowerPoint, as well as encouraging more people to attend service events. As we begin our excursion into summer service, it is especially inspiring to see other new officers come up with new and creative ideas to improve Key Clubs in a variety of ways as well as take initiative in their positions. Our Vice President Uyen Nguyen, for example, has especially demonstrated her leadership abilities throughout her time as an officer elect and continues to stay on top of many facets of the club and assist President Gavin Wilson, who has already been a visibly effective and incredible leader. Seeing everyone work hard to be the best that they can inspires me to work harder as well and seek out new ways to improve myself. My first year in Key Club was fun, exciting, new, and inspiring. I got to be a part of an amazing community of people who were willing to sacrifice their time to help others and I got to experience fun community events that I would’ve never been able to have had I not joined this amazing club. I learned especially a lot about myself, such as how fun it could be to talk to new people and volunteer with children, and have grown a lot as a person as a result. With the school year at an end, I am even more excited to continue being a part of Key Club during the summer and continue to enjoy these unique experiences with such kind people.

FUNDRAISERS Kiana Busto, Sophomore Class Representative There are many things in life that require money. In order to fund events held by our school’s Key Club, send students to DCON, and to do many other things, we’ve had to find clever and fun ways to come up with that money. The amount of money we make heavily relies on the interests of our fellow schoolmates. To raise money, we focused on those interests and sold experiences or products at a reasonable rate. One of the first fundraisers we held in the second semester was a bake sale. On Valentine's Day we took advantage of the fact that people would naturally want to give something sweet to warm the hearts of their loved ones amidst the cold February days. Anybody that could, brought something they made themselves or got from the store. Sales were great, and many people got things for themselves, their friends, and significant others, but no matter who it was for, they all left with a smile! For our next fundraiser, we hopped on the Nintendo Switch bandwagon. As time passed we noticed how popular the portable gaming console along with the game Super Smash Bros Brawl had become. Many students brought it with them to school and played on it when they completed their

14

work. We decided to take their love for gaming and competitive spirit and give them the experience to freely play during their lunch break for a dollar. We set it up on the stage using the projector so that anybody could watch, and if they were interested they could come up any time. The rules were simple, everybody would play to win, the winner stays without having to pay again, the losers have to get back in line and pay if they wish to play again. We were able to make a couple hundred in just a few days between three lunch periods. Our Key Club’s go to for fundraisers are socials! At the end of the year, on the second to last day of school we threw a pie in the face social. We put large helpings of whipped cream on paper plates and sold them for a dollar a piece. People who came could pie anybody in the face with their consent, but they could pie any board member without consent. Needless to say, it was a messy experience, but it was apparent in everyone’s faces that it was worth their money! Throughout the year, the creative ideas and efforts to advertise each event has allowed us to be successful in all our attempts to raise money. I’m sure that in the upcoming years the Summit High School Key Club won’t fail to put the fun in fundraisers!

Thank goodness school’s out, am I right? Now that I have more time on my hands, I might try experimenting with the newsletter a little more. I want to find a new thing, like how last year I had a lot of watercolors. Anyways, that’s not the point of my editors note. I just want to say that I’m not only extremely proud of Mansfield Summit for everything we’ve accomplished this year, but I’m also proud of all the other Mansfield schools as we;;, with all of us making top 25. Hopefully we can keep that streak for years to come, but Summit will always remain on top :) I’m excited to achieve more this summer and throughout next school year! In Love and Service,

Alyssa Brown
