letter Hey Key Clubbers, October was a busy month for Key Club, we had multiple volunteering events throughout the month just to name a few we had, 2 PB&Js, 5 Feed the Kids, a Lantern Festival and multiple elementary school events. We also welcomed the governor of the Texas-Oklahoma District to our card making social and several of our officers went to Oklahoma to attend Fall Rally. All of these events would not have been possible without the contribution of our supportive Key Clubbers. We still have our Hallowen social coming up as well as our spooky sweets bake sale that we will hold on Halloween to raise money for our trip to DCON this year. I hope to see all of our Key Clubbers faces as we get closer to the season of giving! Yours in service,

OCTOBER NIGHTS Uyen Nguyen, Vice Presidentr
8
This October was full of bonding and heartwarming moments. From floating lanterns to late baking, the opportunity of volunteering for the community made these experiences memorable. Located at Texas Motorplex, Night Lights was a lantern festival that required volunteers to help it run. There were many stations at the festival that needed help: the lantern, bonfire/ smores, shirts, clean up, and the ticket station. The volunteers were then split into these stations where we would stay for the remainder of the festival. Gavin, Lalo, Thomas and I were stationed at the Lanterns table where we would hand out lanterns, markers, and lighters out. Along with our official duties, we were also directing lost people to the correct locations and communication and correcting errors that would come up once in a while. We worked nonstop at our station from 3 to 8, there were always people we needed to direct and help and by the end of our shift, our
legs were about to give out from how long we were standing, our stomachs growling from lack of food, our thumbs numb from lighting the lighters and our hearts satisfied. The lighting of the lanterns started and we all watch the families, couples, and friends beginning to ignite their lanterns, lifting them up to the sky. We then grabbed our free lanterns, some markers, and lighters and ran as fast as we could, across the field and up the bleachers. We proceeded to write our wishes and one by one floated our lanterns from the railing. It was absolutely breathtaking to see the thousands upon thousands of lights sparkling amongst the sky. Honestly, nothing could compare to the feelings of peace and fulfillment I had that night beside my volunteering buddies after the long volunteering shift watching the lights float upwards carrying away our wishes towards the sky. Once the lanterns were out of sight, we decided to get some food in our stomach because we were starving from the lack of food but we were met with the immense traffic which lasted around 30 min. We managed to cheat the traffic by traveling through this creepy small road and luckily we came out safe and went straight to IHOP. The memories made from endless conversations, uncontrollable laughter, and banging to music made the bond between us grow. By the time we all got home, it was 12 in the morning, we were exhausted from the journey we had but there were no regrets. Being able to help the people at the festival made me so happy, the sense of fulfillment I had is one I would never trade. This Night Lights Lantern Festival made me realize that volunteering is so much more than volunteering, it creates the bonds of friendships and the sense of accomplishment to help out the community is beautifully amazing. This is what Key Club is about.

MEETING WITH THE GOVERNOR Gavin Wilson, President
12
As anyone on the board of Summit high school will tell you, Summit was able to win first place at DCON the past year for being a dedicated and passionate club committed to service and we really looked forward to continuing that service this year. One of the great things that comes with being the number one club is that next year your club will get a visit from that years governor of the mighty Texas-Oklahoma's district during their Governors tour. So this year we were given the opportunity to host Governor Ashna Patel, to meet with and get to know her. When the board got the news we went to work trying to come up with an idea for a service social that would fit into the governors project this year: Culture for Caring. To start we knew we wanted to have something that had a larger impact than just our area while still bringing people together to meet and have a good time together. We decided that something interactive would be best and we decided that we wanted to
help a local charity that supports orphans in eastern Europe, called Allies in Youth Development. After talking to their volunteer coordinator, she informed us we could help make their toiletry kits by making the cards. So we picked up the cards and planned to have the social at a local boba shop in Mansfield. The day if the social we had Key Clubbers from both our school and multiple others in our division come to make the cards. We were able to finally meet the governor and learn more about her project and what's happening with the district board, as well as Fally Rally, which Summit also attended this past week. It was great to see that there were other people in the T-O District who cared about Key Club as much as our club and board does. After the social was over a couple of key clubbers and I went to Allies in order to complete the toiletry kits that we had me the cards in order to complete the small amount of help that is needed in completing Allies’s mission of helping orphans in eastern Europe. It is always great to see first hand what kindness and generosity can do when you get a group of people together that really care about a cause. The Social was an overall success, as we made over three hundred cards for Allies in Youth Development. We were also able to form a new bond with Ashna that we hope to carry for the rest of the year.

Due to some things that have been happening with me surrounding school and my personal life, I am unfortunately going to have to resign from my position as editor, effective next month. I just want to thank everyone who has gotten me to where I am, and that I couldn’t have done this in the first place without you guys. I’m truly grateful for the experiences I’ve had and the friends I’ve made through this club, and I hate the fact that I have ro give it up. But sometimes things happen, you know. Anyways, it’s been great serving this club.
In Love and Service,
Alyssa Brown
