letter Hey Everyone, So here we are halfway through the year and our club has been very busy, so far we have had many socials, tons of meetings and have volunteered hundreds of hours! We still have a lot ahead of us for the rest of the year, and will be starting with our Spooky Sweets sale for Halloween. We will also be having a chocolate sale fundraiser during December as well as adopting our Christmas Angels as we do every year. We will also be having other socials during Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas to look forward too. Just a reminder to everyone that we are still taking dues and we have started taking money for t-shirts. Remember to stay active for a chance to win member of the month for the month of October. Yours in service,

4

Gavin Wilson

FUNDRASING ! Daisy Hernandez, Secretary

8

With Fall fast approaching and the weather starting to cool down, the Mansfield Summit High School Key Club has come up with various ideas for new fundraisers which will complement the autumn weather nicely. Mansfield Summit Key Club first plans on having a Halloween bake sale on October 31st, then selling World’s Finest Chocolate after Thanksgiving break. For the Halloween bake sale, our board plans on selling various homemade treats, such as cookies, cupcakes, cake pops, brownies, etc. with a touch of Halloween decorations to celebrate the wonderful spooky holiday. This bake sale will be similar to the bake sale that we had last year, which was a Valentine’s Day bake sale. Last year’s bake sale was such a success, with almost all of our treats selling out and everybody having a fun time making and selling them, that we have decided to have another bake sale this year. Additionally,

members are encouraged to bring in homemade goods as well for service hours, which allows everyone to take part in this fun and exciting experience. This inclusiveness not only helps our club raise money, but is a great way to demonstrate one of the four Key Club core values, which Mansfield Summit Key Club is all about! In addition to the Halloween bake sale, Mansfield Summit Key Club also plans on selling World’s Finest Chocolate after Thanksgiving break. The decision to sell these chocolates was a good one, but definitely not an easy choice to make between World’s Finest Chocolate and the Old Fashion Candy Co. boxes that are also frequently sold at schools for fundraising purposes. However, after a long discussion in which the board concluded that World’s Finest Chocolate would be easier to sell on a small-scale considering the Old Fashion Candy Co. boxes always had several candies that would not sell and generally did not fit the season as nicely, we chose World’s Finest Chocolate to sell and cannot wait to see the successful outcome of this fundraiser as well. The fall and winter seasons are some of the most beautiful times of the year, with the beautiful scenes of leaves falling and the cool breeze of a new season. During this time, all of the countless students who bring their coffee into school will now also be able to enjoy it with some Halloween treats and some chocolate while helping our Key Club continue to serve our school and our community.

GETTING INVOLVED! Kiana Busto, Sophomore Class Representative

12

The new school year has just begun, and freshman as well as returning students flood into the lecture hall where our meetings are held. Some join to gain access to volunteer opportunities to collect hours for things such as NHS and the teen leadership class. Some join because it looks good on college applications. Others join to have something to do after school. After completing all the steps to officially become a part of Key Club, many new members become stagnant because they don’t know what comes next. As a board we have been brainstorming and finding ways to improve ways to promote continual involvement at events and consistent attendance at general meetings, as well as ways to send out information to members. The PB&J event is a volunteering event that takes place at our school every other Wednesday. At this event we make PB&J sandwiches for the homeless. It is an easy and convenient way to volunteer since members get to participate without leaving the campus. Because of this, attendance has been strong, with about 50-75 people showing up each time. In order to produce similar results in as

many events as possible we do a variety of things. For larger events and socials, our club focuses in on advertising. Large, colorful, and eye catching posters are our go-to since seeing it repeatedly every time you pass the halls will help people remember and hopefully encourage them to come. Those who can drive offer rides to members who can’t so that we can eliminate the transportation issue for members who can come but just need rides. For members who wish to participate but forgot all the info from the last meeting, frequent reminders are sent prior to each event via text messages. Also detailed explanations on each event are given at general meetings. Of course, becoming a part of Key Club doesn’t necessarily mean that attendance for all events are mandatory. Aside from the required 25 hours of volunteering each semester, our club is very understanding of everybody’s situation. Volunteering opportunities are provided and members are free to choose which ones they would like to participate in. The beginning of the school year is a busy time for everybody but we make sure that nothing is forced but everything is encouraged. For the members with busy schedules, we always make sure to inform them of what’s next!

The more newsletters I write, the shorter these editor’s notes become. I think the same thing is happening to Gavin with his president’s letters as well. As you probably know if you’re reading these, October is a great month for Key Club with Trick or Treat for UNICEF, where we raise money for children through tiny boxes used to keep spare change. It’s one of our biggest fundraisers for charity that we have all year, and I’m very excited to see what we do this year!

In Love and Service,

Alyssa Brown
