STEPPING IN BIG SHOES Uyen Nguyen, Vice President
Before being involved in after-school activities, I used to always think of Key Club as another average club. I didn't really understand what Key Club did or why people got so excited over it. I always thought those people were lame and that they didn’t know what fun was, I would make fun of them for enjoying such a seemingly boring past time. But when I joined for the first time, I began to understand the hype of it all. Key Club was so much more than just “another” club or just meetings and volunteering. It was about the bond we make with other people, the family we were taken into and the impact of the club to the community around us. Due to the vast impact that Key Club was doing, I was inspired. I wanted to do more to help, to be more than a member, to further improve the club. That motivation and inspiration led me to run for Summit’s Key Club Vice President. At first, I intended to go for a lower position since this was only my first year in Key Club, but I wanted to have a bigger platform to make an impact in other people’s life. The president and the vice10 president are people that does everything that they
can to better the club, the members and the community around them. For example, the past president and vice president (now currently the president), Patricia and Gavin, are one of the most dedicated people I have ever seen. They have worked extremely hard to improve the club and have created more joy for the members with their contagious happiness. Patricia and Gavin have also used their platforms to spread kindness to the surrounding communities, the adults, children and the elderly, by creating many social projects that would improve their lives. Being around them has made me gain an admiration for student leadership. Once I got elected, I knew that there will be big, gaping shoes to fill in. I am now officially the new vice president and I’m kinda nervous, but at the same time I know that whatever I do I will do it with the best of my ability. My passion for Key Club will propel me to inspire others like how Patricia and Gavin inspired me. I aspire to be just as great as the past president and vice president, doing my best for everyone and spreading positivity and kindness.

This years district convention was an absolute smash (pun intended), not only because of the awards we won, but because of the things we learned at forums and because of all the new bonds we formed and the old ones we strengthened. REFLECTING ON THIS KEY CLUB YEAR Amy Tran, Treasurer

Following the most eventful DCON thus far, I’ve undoubtedly learned so much about what my position entails and everything that revolves around Key Club. Having been an officer since the 2017-2018 term, I’ve had the chance to discover new things about what it means to take on a leadership position and how imperative it is to work together as a team. However, this past Key Club year was definitely composed of both learning new things and discovering things that are unfortunately too late. As the new Key Club year has approached, some elements that I wish I knew before (during my 2018-19 term) were the importance of being a Treasurer, fundraising, budgeting, and record keeping. To start off, when I was elected, I unfortunately never got the chance to be trained by our former Treasurer; but with the help of former SHS Key Club President Patricia Rojas, I was able to independently learn about what my duties are and what’s expected from a Treasurer. That being said, it took time to be able to recognize what’s the President’s job and what’s a Treasurer's job. Such as figuring out whose job it is to collect dues and updating the MUC. But luckily both the President, Vice President, and I were able to work together as a team and as a whole accomplish all tasks expected of each club. Nevertheless, one thing I wish I knew before
starting my term was having an indepth understanding of what this position consists of. Just like every other student that is dealt with piles of homework, we forgot about holding fundraisers to raise money for DCON. In addition to that, most of our projects dealt with spending money in order to make any form of profit. As stated previously, having no experience with the steps that go into fundraising, I was a bit of a mess. But after countless of board meetings with my fellow officers, and tons of fundraising events, I’ve learned how to create a spreadsheet that can assist us with expenditures, profit goals, etc. Along with fundraising, one imperative job for a Treasurer is to produce a budget sheet that can both act as an outline for DCON costs, and our goals in regards to memberships, t-shirt profit, and fundraising money. And coming from a school that is strict with transactions relating to our Key Club bank account, it took time to be able to make the calculations and estimates for each and every component that’s essential to a budget sheet. Having prior knowledge as to the difference between service accounts and administrative accounts is certainly something that I wish I would've known beforehand. But regardless of all the things I wish I knew before my term, the 201819 Key Club year was without a doubt one of the best ones yet. Despite not receiving the outstanding Treasurer award, our Mansfield Summit Key Club was able to achieve countless of awards including: outstanding Reporting Secretary, distinguished website, best single service project, runner up in the Smash Bros Tournament, and most importantly, the top club in all of Texas-Oklahoma District! All of which could not have been done without the cooperation of our Division 39S LTG Brianna Dao, our advisors Mr. Reese and Mrs. Berwise, and our amazing officers.

I hope you enjoy this picture of me literally bawling my eyes out with Patricia. My first DCON was an amazing experience, and I’m beyond happy that we got first among all of Texas and Oklahoma. I believe as editor I contributed more than my fair share of points with these newsletters, but none of this would be here if it wasn’t for Patricia. She’s the only reason I even got this far in the first place. My first attempt at making a newsletter was utter garbage, but with the help of Patricia we turned this into the newsletter it is today. Not only has she been an amazing mentor, but she’s also been an amazing friend, and I’m going to miss her so much when she leaves. Thank you Paty for making my Key Club experience so much better than good, I love you so much. Now excuse me while I cry some more :)
In Love and Service,
