Key Clubber Edition By: Alice Nguyen, President With school starting, what tips can you give on balancing school, Key Club, and any other extracurricular? You're entering a new year of school and it's time to show your commitment to this wonderful organization - Key Club. People always state, "Make high school the most you can within 4 years" and thus you decided to be involved like never before, but how will you be able to handle everything from school, outside activities, and Key Club? Well, with three simple pointers, every single Key Clubber will surely know how to balance life.
Tip #1: For first and foremost, it is always best to be organized. Everyone has different methods on planning and keeping notes. Whether you use a physical planner or an online calendar, you must take full advantage of the available resource! It may take some trials to see what works best for you. Personally, I write and record everything down such as when Key Club meetings are held and when homework assignments are due. As the "key" to having a balanced life, organization
8
allows you to plan and schedule events accordingly. By having a little overview of the future, you can prepare yourself in advance and continue with the following steps. Without having effective organization skills, it could be difficult for some to follow through the next few tips.
Tip #2: Once you are organized, take note on what should be prioritized. If you have a lot of things to accomplish or events to attend, figure out what is most important or which needs your attention and effort more. Sometimes, a person can be too caught up in things and forget that they are AN individual that can only do so much in a time span. As stated in the previous tip, everyone has different ways of organizing and sometimes, having a to-do list can be efficient. You can list out in order of what’s most to least important and what are mandatory. This will allow you to maintain your focus on one thing at a time and help you transition to the next checkpoint – from school activities to Key Club events to your extracurricular activities. If having a list does not help you, make sure you have an idea of what to prioritize.
Tip #3: When you know what to prioritize, make sure you are being productive and managing your time well. Cut back on the procrastination. Time is a vital part in balancing life because it is very valuable. The time you slack off on school assignments can be used to do many things such as volunteering and serving your community or attending a sporting event. By using your time wisely to be productive, you’ll build up less stress as many of the things on your to-do list will be crossed off. While it is a lot to take in, make sure you make some time to rest. When things get too overwhelming, take a step back and breathe. A stressed life is not a balanced life nor is it a fun one. Everyone has different ways to balance and handle their life activities so find a method that works for you! Being involved helps you stay active and brings you many great benefits so continue the hard work and have fun!

Giving Back, By: Brianna Dao, Vice President Summer is a time of relaxation, a time to spend late nights with friends and family, a time to even volunteer. During the long and scorching Texas weather, my Key Club family and I never stopped. We volunteered day-by-day, night-by-night. Within the three short months of summer, never would I have imagined that my fellow key clubbers would have became the second closest thing I knew as family. Every week on Wednesdays from 10AM-11AM and 6PM-7PM, we volunteered at Feed the Kids (FTK). Feed the Kids is a volunteering opportunity that means what the name of the service event entitles, feeding the kids. We helped unload and pack an abundance of bags that would soon be delivered to the economically low students within the Mansfield ISD School District. Even with the sunny Texas weather, the efforts in giving back to the community was evidently seen. Multiple people ranging from toddlers, teens, and even adults showed up almost every single week to make a difference in one’s lives.
10
The event starts out with a prayer
made by Kiwanian, Phil Stover. In this prayer, he states how he is so thankful for the communities’ active volunteerism and how the help of packing over 1,000 bags each week will go towards nourishing multiple kids within our area. After the prayer and any announcements made, everyone scrambles around making their way to the section in which they will be helping out with. There were five sections ranging from breaking the cardboard boxes that would later be recycled, packing, tying, and running the bags. Feed the Kids tends to last about an hour, within this hour; I wouldn’t have ever imagined how close you could become to one another. At this event, you meet people who potentially become your closest friends and people with multiple background stories, multiple stories period. I personally craved for every Wednesday of the week because I knew I’d be seeing some of the best, down to Earth people again. As the weeks went along and I continued to volunteer with others in my community, I started to realize how every single person in the warehouse was always genuinely smiling. This warehouse that was filled with a plethora of different people all had the same genuine smile as I did. A room filled with positive vibes, these bags that were being made were also made with a sense of love and care. Who would have thought that the simple act of packing a bag filled with a variety of food for other students within my school district could make such an impact on my volunteerism and perspective on helping others. Feed the Kids is an amazing opportunity for people to bond, help out, and mostly have fun while doing well in giving back to the community; one step at a time.

A Great Start to a By: Arantza Zamudio, Webmaster Mansfield Summit Key Club held our first meeting on August 23rd, after an entire week of school, to kick things off for the upcoming year. We plan to have an amazing year this year and talked to the returning and new members about the club’s old rules but also some new changes. After everyone signed in, the officers started the meeting off with a PowerPoint introducing ourselves and the new standards we set for members, we discussed upcoming events, and we handed out required forms for interested members to sign and return. Each officer took part in presenting the information on the slide show. The members behaved and asked well thought out questions, and then after the meeting, we then had our first social of the year with our members. Officers provided ten boxes of pizza for the members to enjoy. We decided to try something new this social. We decided to make dog chew toys out of old clothes for pets in need of care and we would donate the toys to an organization. We set time for our members to interact with us and other members, we talked and had fun making the toys. If the members did not know how to make a toy, a step by step instruction of the process was displayed on the front projector screen. The members enjoyed helping out these pets and had fun talking and interacting with others.
12
a After the process of the toy making, we passed around the boxes of pizza for everyone to enjoy and cups for soft drinks. The officers walked around in groups of three asking each person and giving them the option to choose from pepperoni or cheese pizzas, and handing them a napkin to clean up any mess that could've been made. All drinks and food were passed out to the sitting members to avoid chaos at the front of our lecture hall. Everyone enjoyed the slices of pizza and the sips of drinks and afterwards the social came to an end. Before the officers left, we decided to take a photo of ourselves to start the year off right. We all lined up on the back wall of our lecture room, posed and a new book member was there to take a photo of all of us posing for our first group photo of the school year at our first meeting of the school year. All in all we had a great time interacting and spending time with our club. We had a special guest, our Lieutenant Governor, come out to our meeting to show his support and love to our club. Having him show up to our meeting and having him there for our first social at the school was appreciated from all the officers and we showed him the what “Summit Love is all about in our Key Club.
