Breakfast at Methodist By: Sophia Pham, Junior Class Rep The blistering heat and the sight of tank tops are subtle signs that summer has officially started. Most teenagers my age would find themselves working summer jobs or chilling at the mall, but not me. My commitment was elsewhere. Key club. The following Friday after school was let out, I found myself waking up at 6 o’clock in the morning. This was the usual time and alarm I would wake up to when school was in session. However, I was not waking up at this time to go to school. I was previously informed by my president that every Friday there was a Kiwanis meeting at the Mansfield Methodist Hospital early in the morning. My key club president wasn’t kidding when she meant early in the morning. With my eyes barely open, I trudged out of my house and to the meeting place. I thought it was odd that a Kiwanis gathering would be at a hospital, a place that didn’t really correlate with key club. Upon entering the conference room where the meeting was held, my keen nose smelled a delightful aroma. Inside, there were breakfast food waiting to be appreciated. The food definitely helped snapped me awake. The Kiwanis meeting started out with everyone grabbing a plate and piling on the breakfast food.
8
Next was the ringing of the golden bell that symbolizes the start of the assembly. Important matters regarding key club was discussed among the Kiwanis, but there was still an element of fun. Jokes and laughs were shared with everyone and the congregation was, the very least, serious. Waking up so early in the morning is difficult as it is, so it’s reassuring to know that the atmosphere is lighthearted. It’s also reassuring for the Kiwanis members to treat us like young adults that we are and to let us attend their weekly meetings. Our key club would not be where we are if not for the Kiwanis members. Of course key club is a student-run organization, but we still wouldn’t make it as far as we have done so far without Kiwanis. I think it’s amazing how they’re so committed to this organization and their strive to make the community a better place to live in. They stand behind the key club motto, “Serving the Children of the World” very much as shown with all the help and support we, as Summit Key Club, get from them. Since school has concluded, I plan on attending as many Kiwanis meeting as I can to gain beneficial experiences that can assist me in filling my role as junior class representative. Although my role in my school key club is not major, I know how important teamwork is and how everyone must pull their own weight in order to succeed as a whole. I hope me and my fellow officers can learn from the Kiwanis through these Friday meetings in order to improve the quality of our key club and the quality of service that we offer to our community.

SAVE A
BABY’S LIFE
With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every 11 minutes—nearly 49,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

By: Anna Tran, Secretary Since the beginning of summer, I have been volunteering every single week and let me say, the day I volunteer is the best day of the week. Every Wednesday, my amazing Key Clubbers and I come to the Feed the Kids Summer Program to pack food for children who lack the nutrients and nourishments for the summer. This service event is sponsored by our incredible Mansfield Kiwanian, Mr. Phil Stover. Mr. Stover is the most kind, caring, and remarkable person I have ever met, and I cannot thank him enough for all the thoughtful things he does. This service event was open to everyone and even though there isn’t much to do at times, more than 50 people come to help. Key Clubbers from Mansfield, Mansfield Legacy, Oakridge, many more high schools and my own school, Mansfield Summit come to support this service project. Although some of these schools aren’t close to this event, they still go out of their way to come and volunteer. This year, our District 7 Regional Advisor, Mr. Corey Nieman’s goal is to promote interaction between Key Clubs and create a closer bond within our division. This interclub has brought our Key Clubs together and made us closer than ever before. The thing that differentiates a

An Interclub Worth Remembering club and a family is an interclub. Doing things together to make a greater impact rather than volunteering as individual clubs. Clubs that serve the community together and work for the greater good is a K-Family. I recommend that if any club wants to connect with other schools or even with their whole division, to email other club Presidents and simply ask where do they most frequently volunteer so that interclubs can take place and to invite other Key Clubs to a social your club will be hosting. Socials and interclubs are by far the best way to encourage Key Clubbers to be active and to have a great and enjoyable club. This will encourage Key Clubbers to volunteer if they are surrounded with others and in an exciting environment. Before, I always questioned why people liked volunteering, but now I understand that when you have your family by your side, it makes all the difference. Ever since I began volunteering with my board officers, I have built trust and a stronger connection with them. They are my friends. They are my family. Doing the littlest things from packing food to tying bags is what makes volunteering so special. Doing it with friends and family however, is what makes an interclub worth remembering.

By: Patricia Rojas, Editor For many, summer is a break from all things school related, however that’s not the case for key clubbers. Key Club season is year-round and not even the scalding Texas heat can stop a dedicated key club member from partaking in service. That being said, helping out the community can be extremely tiring especially for members as dedicated as ours. All this hard work on behalf of our members brought my fellow board officers and myself to the conclusion that we needed to have a social in order to celebrate not only our achievements of the month but also to thank our key clubbers for helping out the community during their free time. The board and I decided on none other than a movie night, but in Mansfield Summit Key Club fashion we also had to incorporate service into our social. Our original plans consisted of an evening of volunteering at Mission Arlington before the movie, but due to some unexpected circumstances Mission Arlington had to be cancelled. Despite this occurring we still wanted to keep service incorporated into our night so we came up with the next best thing, card making! Once a month Mansfield Summit Key Club plays bingo with the residents

of the Mansfield Nursing Home, so we thought that it’d be a really sweet idea to make cards for all of the residents as well as for the people who work there. After counting the cards, we realized that we had made over 80 cards in total for the residents, most of which included some really funny puns. We’re taking the cards to the Mansfield Nursing Home residents next week and I can’t wait to see their reactions after reading those adorably funny cards. With both the card making and the movie, secret life of pets, we were all set to have a fun summer night, but we were still missing one more thing… more key clubbers! We know that all the other Key Clubs in our division had been working just as hard as we have so we made sure to invite them so that we could all enjoy an evening of service and fun. Much to our surprise, we had more key clubbers than expected from both Mansfield Summit and other clubs show up to our social. Making our night even better, because it allowed us to meet many new people as well as build on the friendships we had already made.
